For Those Their Own Jailor

I lock the door behind us, climb up into the van and take a last look before dropping the keys into your bag. I can see the house in the mirror as we reach the end of the road and take a left.   ‎ The place we move into is nice, spring turns into summer, we talk about the old house less. Every now and then we lose something, and come across a set of keys ‎to the old place while turning out drawers.  We mention it to each other when this happens, and neither of us say anything more, but a shadow passes across us both. ‎ ‎It’s autumn when the problems start. You’re working late a lot, I spend too much time by myself and fall back into destructive behaviours.  ‎ We move again, closer to your work, a smaller, more manageable space.  Things aren’t better. The new apartment is dark, we both feel confined rather than comfortable. The rows escalate and we sleep apart.   There are boxes we haven’t got room to unpack‎. Occasionally we move them in a frustrated search for some missing item and hear keys rattling at the bottom of a box.  

It’s February when the storm breaks, and March finds us seeking separate accommodation. I take a top floor studio, with views of an identikit flat staring back at me across a car park courtyard. It feels as soulless as I do. I sleep badly through these spring nights. It feels like something’s digging into me through the cheap mattress‎, and each time I turn over I hear the jangling of keys.   ‎
