A rare gold discovery was made in the Lapland wilderness in August, when gold miners Kalervo Ruohoniemi, Jari Myllykangas and Markku Hannu found a 61.5 gram gold nugget, Iltalehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun)reports.
It is the largest lump of gold found in Finland in the last two years, but how much is it worth? the paper asks.
"On Tuesday, the world market price of gold was around 56.34 euros per gram, so if that gold nugget were pure gold, today the melt value of the nugget would be around 3,465 euros," Sam Laakso, head of the Markets unit of Voima Gold Ltd and a gold expert, told the paper.
"The nugget is likely to be 20-24 carats, or 83-99 percent pure gold," Laakso said.
If sold to a collector, the value can increase many times over, IL writes.
"In the gold market, all gold is gold, so gold nuggets don't fetch more than the world market price. However, there is a dedicated community of collectors for gold nuggets, and if a nugget is sold to a collector, it can sell for up to several times the world market price," Laakso said, adding that the aureate lump's large size also limits the number of potential buyers.
He added that it is rare for a private individual to find such a large gold nugget.
"You don't find many of these in Finland," Laakso noted.
Night-time charging
Electricity prices are on the rise, so one option to reduce bills is to make use of night-time electricity, Taloussanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) reported.
When electricity consumption is high, the exchange price is higher, so at night, electricity is cheaper to consume given lower demand.
However, it's easy to be tempted by after-hours electricity to take care of chores such as laundry, dishwashing or charging electrical appliances, there are some caveats, the paper cautioned.
The insurance company Fennia told the paper it advises tenants against leaving washing machines running while they are asleep. Unless the appliance was properly monitored, the insurance company may not cover potential damages if something happens.
Additionally, when you dig a little deeper into after-hours electricity optimisation, it turns out that there are no hard and fast rules, the paper writes.
"Apartments, houses and life situations are very different from one another," Pekka Salomaa, energy market director at Finnish Energy, told Taloussanomat.
"In the old days, night-time electricity has been most useful for people living in electrically heated households. However, in basic households, there are few opportunities for short-cuts with night-time electricity," Salomaa pointed out.
However, the benefits of night-time electricity are determined by both heating and charging functions, Taloussanomat writes.
"If possible, it's a good idea to schedule the charging of an electric car during the night hours," Jani Kostiainen, a legal adviser at energy authority Energiavirasto told the paper.
SDP's worry
Within Prime Minister Sanna Marin's Social Democratic Party (SDP), there is growing frustration that instead of public discussion about the party's policies, the focus is on the prime minister's drug test, nightlife, and party photos, Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) reports.
Several members of Marin's party spoke to HS on condition of anonymity as they did not want to comment publicly on their leader's activities.
According to HS, some interviewees were particularly concerned that Marin did not seem to learn from last year's events and criticisms, with a few saying it raises big questions about her judgement.
Yle and Seiska (siirryt toiseen palveluun) magazine reported last October that Marin and her entourage had attended a concert in September. Marin gathered a group of artists, their friends, and acquaintances after the event, and they left in five taxis in the early hours of the morning to continue their party at her Kesäranta residence. When the guests arrived at the residence, their personal details were not checked.
Later, Marin posted a picture on her Instagram account in response to criticism of the incident. The picture was accompanied by lyrics from the song Boomer by singer Benjamin Peltonen, with the photo caption reading: "Hey boom-boom-boomer, stay calm, be cool."
In spite of all the criticism, Marin has many positive attributes, according to the sources interviewed by HS.
One party official described her as an amazingly well-performing, analytical, and pressure-resistant prime minister.
However, another party member told the paper that when voters get the impression that Marin's just having fun and not glued to the phone in her office, it may also affect their vote.
Many interviewees also said they believe Marin had changed over the last couple of years as a result of the pressure she has faced as premier, combined with her rapid rise to global stardom.
