Think if you really wanted to even shit out so far as the Pern dragon worldbuilding, like for shit where Thread isn't a matter and the like, you would probably be best served letting dragons and whers take a solid seven-odd years to reach full maturity. This works better with their long lifespans alongside their size and such than the 2 years we see during Passes.

Like, that number works for firelizards, they're the closest we get in Pern to an ecological comparison to small prey species. They take a few years to get started and lay a lot of eggs once they have. Most small prey species reach breeding age faster, but we can balance that out with longer lifespans. I mean, according to MHoP riderpairs can and do regularly live decently into their hundreds, with fuckers still running around in their 110's, so it's not unreasonable to have dragonkin make it to 100 as long as they don't get taken out by disease, predators, or injury.

Though of course the greater dragonkin seem to run on a similar timeframe to the firelizards? I think? In canon? So technically you could make the lifespan for them even longer.

But then we look at MHoP and go 'wait a second, but'. Theory, based on the fucking Interval riders lasting long enough to get governmental recognition on our planet- that severe bond between rider and dragon affects senescence. Think about it, that lifespan is marked as abnormal, because it very much is, in-universe compared to your average folks. And it can't just be a healthcare access thing, because even the fucking Lords and Masters aren't managing that shit. The MasterHealer isn't managing that shit, so far as we know. Meanwhile, the critters the dragons were made from we're supposed to believe might be kinda-immortal. It makes just as much sense that the bond between rider and dragon lengthens the lifespan of the rider (if you're still running around fine at 110, you're probably gonna manage at least 120) and shortens that of the dragon.

('But Achi, Holth-' Dragons during a Pass (which we've already stated we aren't taking into account for this this is for shit where Thread, for one reason or another, is not a concern) are working themselves ragged training for and fighting in Fall. And that's just the fighting pairs, the golds are having to produce anywhere from 15 eggs every other years to 40 eggs twice a year depending on which of the books you're reading. This is the sort of thing we know causes faster aging and deterioration of the body. And even then the riders seem to be making it 70-80 years, and who knows how much longer Holth and Leri had in retirement.)

But then that's all if you want to play with that concept, one could always keep them making it to their 100s across the board. Personally if you do go with increasing the lifespan for greater dragonkin I wouldn't go over 250, with a larger 300 for fuckers who bond to species that live longer than them, but that's just what feels right to me.

Whichever way, it would make sense for greater dragonkin to take longer to mature just in general, and especially compared to firelizards given their higher intelligence. They need time to get those big brains up to snuff.

'But Achi, how would they even physically live that long-' I don't know! They're aliens! Maybe that third DNA strand is dedicated to repairing shit! Could be anything! These fuckers are telepathic, telekinetic, teleporting timetravelers, anything is possible!

If nothing else, it's a fun fucking concept.

As I often am when I'm rotating in The Bad Place, I'm drawn to old loves and nostalgia for comfort, which is why I'm currently rereading the Dragonriders of Pern series.

I've already made my peace with some of the more eyebrow-raising scenes in my childhood beloved books (Anne was a 2nd wave feminist in the 60s, what can I say), but I'm up to Moreta and, oh my god it hits so different after the pandemic. AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY.

Titular protagonist Moreta, dragonlady of Pern. Such a Pernese legend that they wrote ballads about her that would be sung for generations to come.

And only now do I somehow see that she's a fucking idiot.

Seriously! She's Fort Weyr's healer, would have become a Master Healer if she hadn't become a dragonrider first. But she touches a mysteriously dying runnerbeast without any caution or even washing her damn hands afterwards (something she later admits to herself she only did to impress her new boy toy Alessan).

THEN because she doesn't want to face the fact that she may be infected, she instead questions the judgement of the fucking Masterhealer of Pern in calling a quarantine and flits about interacting with everyone as if nothing bad could ever happen. Her whole justification for this is "dragonriders are healthy, we simply won't get sick". WHAT. I'M SORRY?! You're a HEALER?! Do you know ANYTHING?!

The Pern setting is a little dark ages in the sense that, despite this being far in humanity's future, Pern's population has effectively regressed and forgotten a lot of science (and gender equality . . .). But even so, we can't pretend the healers don't know enough to understand the basic dos and don'ts of serious illnesses.

We know this because there is one person besides the Masterhealer who takes the situation seriously. And that is Sh'gall - Fort Weyrleader. He is rightly anxious about the prospect of a pandemic, he responsibly social-distances himself from other people in the Weyr because he knows he may have been infected, and he furiously enforces the quarantine, destroying his already utter lack of popularity.

And everyone, including the narrative, take the absolute piss out of him for it. Oh, silly Sh'gall! Such a worrywort. So over the top. Talk about exaggerating the risk. What a whiny pissbaby, says Moreta internally in not so many words.

Even after his concerns prove true, nobody acknowledges it. It's just "Oh well, it's done now, Sh'gall. Deal with it," from Miss I'm-Such-A-Great-Healer-I-Spread-Pandemic-To-My-Entire-Weyr.

Lmao.

Well, Sh'gall, it is years too late but I see you now. The title of this book should actually be Sh'gall: Smartest Dragonrider of Pern.

Let's hope the rest of the book redeems Moreta because at the moment I cannot like her anymore xD

Beside him, Aleesa and Jaythen also rushed forward, their gazes intent, focused, angry. “Go on, Kindan, you can do it,” Arella’s voice sounded in his ear, but he didn’t notice it, didn’t feel her hands. Instead, he locked eyes with Aleesa, then looked away, frightened by the expression on the tough old woman’s face. He glanced to Jaythen and saw the fighter’s strength and raw power. He turned his gaze almost imploringly to Mikal, but he knew the old dragonrider had far too much strength for him. He almost broke down, almost backed away, but then he thought of Nonala and Kelsa. “You can do it, Kindan,” Arella’s voice sounded in his ear, her hands kneading his shoulders encouragingly. I will not lose, he swore to himself. He raised his eyes to Jaythen and locked onto him. Jaythen’s age and fierceness melted out of Kindan’s sight. He felt his own heart leap, his breath coming in slow deep lungfuls, and he remembered his bond with Kisk, his watch-wher. If he could manage her, he could manage this man. His eyes widened, not in fear but in release of power. And then-Jaythen blinked, looked away. “Go on, Kindan, you can do it!” Kindan immediately changed his focus to Mikal. He locked eyes on him. I will win, he thought to himself. Again he felt the strength within himself, the support and power of Kelsa and Nonala, and he realized that no matter how old, how skilled Mikal was, he would never win against Kindan because Kindan was supported by so many friends. Mikal’s eyes widened, then broke off. “One more, Kindan, and she’s just an old hag!” Arella shouted behind him. When Kindan turned his attention to Aleesa, she had already lost. “Such power!” she exclaimed, glancing to Mikal. “Did you expect this?” “Yes,” Mikal responded. “He wants to win.” He smiled at Kindan. “Now, we’re going to up the stakes. We’re going to shout at you, try to defeat you with our voices. You have to shout back and defeat us with yours. If you can defeat the three of us, you’ll have no trouble overpowering Vaxoram.” “And you won’t have me to help this time,” Arella added, taking a step away from him. Kindan nodded and beckoned for them to begin. It was much harder this time, with the roar of three voices coming at him, but he never doubted the outcome for an instant. First Mikal, then Aleesa, then Jaythen were all subdued, dropping their eyes from Kindan’s stare. Kindan’s throat was raw and hoarse, but he was exhilarated, feeling he could fly without even a dragon. given that every time Jora is mentioned she's mentioned to be constantly eating - which even extended to her queen - pin up various fatal complications for obesity on a corkboard and throw a dart at it. you've got heart problems, type 2 diabetes, breathing issues, blood pressure problems, stroke, some types of cancer...

we get one line in Dragonflight saying that she was ill for a long time (justifying as to why the Weyr isn't better prepared for the Pass) but other than that we have no information barring the fact that it clearly happened AFTER Nemorth clutched but BEFORE the riders left the Weyr on Search.

also, the masterhealer of the time DID know how to safely preform appendectomies, but doesn't know how to safely transfuse people. so that's approximately the level of medical care we're working with.

I said in the tags that the Pern fic is a conversation with canon, and it is, overall, but the conversation in Part Two is also very specifically an interrogation.

Because I went into this planning Part Three, which is an AU in which Jora lives and how does that change things for Lessa, but to write that, okay, to write that AU we have to ask how did Jora die?
