Mathilde Rosier (née Ollivier)

Mathilde Ollivier was born in 1943 in Paris, France, to an upper middle class pure-blood family. Growing up, she was quite sheltered, being kept away from the more liberal views of society at the time, having been raised in a conservative environment.
She was tutored at home by a governess in the early years of her education. Mathilde’s lessons mostly consisted of proper etiquette for young ladies and the values of refinement, which were deeply ingrained in her upbringing.
The young girl was also immersed in the arts and would take piano lessons from a personal instructor. Mathilde’s mother often took pride in her daughter’s proficiency in playing piano, seeing it as a marker of sophistication that would make her more desirable to potential suitors.
Mathilde’s parents instilled one singular prospect: to find a suitable husband and secure her place in society. She spent childhood envisioning herself in a grand life, adorned in beautiful gowns, hosting lavish gatherings, and having a handsome, charming husband that made her the center of his world.
In 1954, Mathilde’s parents enrolled her at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, hoping that the prestigious institution would not only hone her magical talents, but also introduce her to eligible young wizards from influential families, further securing her future in high society.
During her schooling, she pursued her passion in the arts, particularly music and dance. Mathilde became fond of ballet and often performed in theatre productions, showcasing her talent and poise on stage.
She quickly earned a name for herself, especially once she graduated from Beauxbatons. Mathilde was very popular amongst French nobility, obtaining many lead roles that not only highlighted her skill but also drew the attention of influential pure-blood families.
One of these families were the Rosiers, who had heard about the talented ballerina all the way from England. Laurent and Eglantine Rosier were informed that Mathilde would make a promising bride for their son Étienne, who, at thirty-five, had yet to marry.
The Olliviers were quick to accept the marriage proposal and prepared for their first meeting with the Rosier family soon after.
Before Mathilde’s formal introduction to her betrothed, she was to perform for him and his family, which would give Étienne a chance to see her in a more captivating light and hopefully allure him.
From the beginning, Mathilde was eager to please Rosier, as she longed to impress her future husband and gain his approval. She was a naive girl who didn’t fully understand the complexities of love and marriage.
Her youthful optimism blinded her to the deeper aspects at play, leading her to overlook the intended purpose of the union between her and Étienne Rosier.
Laurent and Eglantine were completely enamored by the girl, finding her absolutely charming and the perfect match for their son.
Étienne on the other hand, seemed to be somewhat disinterested by the whole thing. Of course for appearances, he kept his attention on the stage, watching as Mathilde delivered her performance with an enchanting fervor.
He appeared physically there, but mentally and emotionally, Rosier was detached from everything that was going on around him.
Étienne’s thoughts were consumed by the pressures of his own life and the role he was expected to play. He didn’t want to marry Mathilde, but he knew he had a duty to his family to provide an heir for the bloodline.
The wedding took place a mere few weeks later after Mathilde was brought to England. She didn’t know much English at the time, her family having intended for her to marry a Frenchman and remain within her home country, and so everything was foreign to her in the beginning.
Mathilde was only eighteen when she was to marry Étienne Rosier, while her betrothed was seventeen years her senior. In the eyes of her in-laws, she was only just a child who did not yet know what she was getting into, a naive and inexperienced girl who needed guidance and control.
They viewed her youth as a liability, a sign of vulnerability that made her susceptible to the manipulations of her new family. Eglantine and Laurent knew that they needed to expose their daughter-in-law to the reality of the new world she was brought into.
Étienne stifled her spirit and broke her, exposing her to the system her parents had willingly given her to. Mathilde would soon open her eyes to the fact that she was just a pawn in someone else’s game.
He didn’t care for Mathilde, using her only to produce heirs for the family. By 1963, the couple welcomed their first son Evan and word got out that a male heir for the Rosier family had been produced.
Everyone took comfort in the fact that within her first year of marriage to Étienne, she had already proved herself capable of providing her husband an heir.
The birth of her son earned her the acceptance of her new family, for now she was tied to them by blood and through the respect she gained by giving birth to a son.
Shortly after Evan’s birth, Mathilde suffered from postpartum depression, making it difficult to connect with her newborn. She was overwhelmed by the pressures brought upon her by her in-laws who remained cold and distant, not providing her with the comfort or familial connection she longed for.
For a while she isolated herself, finding the presence of her husband and his family daunting at times when she found herself becoming clouded by the dark fog that overtook her mind.
They saw her as being too emotional and sensitive, their attitude towards Mathilde’s mental health being unfeeling. Some even thought she was seeking attention, accusing her of being a spoiled little girl, dismissing her pain as mere dramatics.
Étienne’s lack of attentiveness began taking its toll on her and she began to realize that her husband truly didn’t care about her. She tried her hardest to find common ground with him, even taking the time to learn some of his hobbies and interests.
He did not seem to appreciate her efforts, though. Instead preferring to ignore his wife’s attempt at connection, deepening the strain on his marriage which darkened his home and the childhood of his firstborn.
Mathilde was pitied upon by Druella, who saw the spark within her sister-in-law fade overtime during the years Mathilde remained married to Étienne.
Ella knew that this wasn’t the life Mathilde had wanted for herself; she remembered the vibrant young girl who once dreamed of a fulfilling life with a loving husband. Now her sister-in-law was slowly becoming a shadow of her former self, trapped in a stifling existence.
In 1971, Mathilde had her second son Felix, but there were slight complications during the birth her baby, which would later cause her to fall vulnerable to illness. As a result, she spent weeks on bedrest, trying to recover, and while her health did slightly improve, it declined quickly once more and her life would come to an abrupt end shortly afterwards.
Étienne did not seem that much affected by the sudden death of his wife, and with her absence, he was left alone with Evan and Felix to raise on his own. Although in spite of being the only parent left for his sons, he distanced himself from them and treated them with contempt and indifference.

Céléase Rosier HCs Pt. 3
In honor of Céléase's birthday tomorrow here are some HCs! Some old and some new facts will be mentioned.
Céléase Rosier was a metamorphmagus but had to suppress this ability due to it not being socially acceptable within high-standing pure-blood families at the time.
She was allergic to Pegasus feathers and ironically Beauxbatons used Pegasai to fly their carriages - poor Lissie, imagine her having an allergic reaction just from passing the stables on the way to class...
When she was enrolled at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, Céléase was sorted into Papillonlisse due to her sociable personality and vibrant character.
Lissie was really appreciative of the arts, including the magical talent of those shunned by high-standing wizarding society (elves, goblins, hybrids, etc.)
Once she got older, Céléase would throw extravagant, flamboyant parties, or soirées, featuring a diverse group of guests and a very open and accepting atmosphere. Anyone was welcome whether you were muggle/muggleborn, half-blood, pure, or any magical being within the wizarding world seeking a safe haven and a good time.

Lissie's nickname for her elder brother Étienne was "Tetty" since at a young age she couldn't properly pronounce his actual name.
She was very good at concealment charms. Céléase inherited the de Trefle-Picques talent to mask the reality of things with very advanced enchantments taught to her by Eglantine.
She first practiced it with the help of her mother due to Eglantine's tendency to conceal Lissie's everchanging appearance when she had yet learned how to control her abilities.
Eglantine ensured that her daughter knew how to hide that side of herself, thinking that Lissie would be considered "undesirable" to suitors if she didn't.
The Rosiers never registered Céléase as a metamorphmagus, due to the shame they feared it would bring to the family. Laurent and Eglantine knew it would ruin their reputation and possibly steer away potential husbands for their daughter in the future.
Lissie loved to sculpt. She had a greenhouse in the back of her estate where she'd often engage in pottery as a pastime.
Within her own family, Lissie was an outcast, especially as she got older and started leaning towards more open-minded views about wizarding society.
The Rosier family were not very notorious for disowning relatives who shared different beliefs on blood purity, especially when they never openly expressed them to the public. In the eyes of her parents and siblings, Céléase had let herself be misguided and the consequence for this was to be quietly estranged from them.
Bellatrix despised her aunt, viewing Lissie as too "weak-willed" to carry out the pure-blood supremacist ideals that their family had prided themselves upon. She had always been disgusted by Céléase for her acceptance of even the most "filthiest" of creatures (aka mudbloods+creatures classified as "underbeings").
Andromeda felt an unspoken connection with her aunt that resonated inside of her even as a child. On the very minimal occasions she's met Céléase, they had always been able to find common ground with one another. Andy looked up to Lissie because of how she found freedom and happiness in a life that was once soul-stifling.
Narcissa's view of her aunt is somewhat complicated. I think that the youngest of the Black sisters was confused about how to feel about Lissie because Druella had become so distant with her. From seeing how her mother and aunt acted around each other made her scared for the future relationships she would have with her own sisters. The fear most likely surfaced especially once Andromeda left the family to be with Ted, maybe even having tried to convince her elder sister not to go because she "didn't want to end up like Mother and Auntie Lissie".
During her earlier years, Céléase was the lover of Tatiana Borisovna Lebedeva, a half-Veela witch from Russia. The two started dating during the on and off periods of Lissie's relationship with Ambrose, who became a Death Eater shortly after their graduation from Beauxbatons.
At the time, the two considered themselves broken up (or at least Lissie did), as the young Rosier girl attempted to disassociate herself from Avery. With Ambrose out of her life, Céléase was able to focus on other things, including her new relationship with Tatiana, who was actually rumored to be betrothed to Lissie's cousin Gabriel Volant.
In 1954, around the time Lissie was twenty, the young Rosier girl gave birth to a child she had out of wedlock with Ambrose Avery. The baby's name was Ersilia, but due to the circumstances under which she was born, Lissie would end up giving her daughter to her elder cousin, Ghislaine Volant.
Céléase regrets not being able to keep her daughter. Overtime I believe she would be going over scenarios in which she could've raised Ersilia. For a few fleeting moments, perhaps Lissie thought that maybe she could've escaped to the muggle world and raise her daughter there, away from the suffocating purist beliefs of their family and the scandal that came along with Ersilia's birth.
She just wanted to be a mother, and when she was given the chance to become one she had to give it up. In spite of this, Céléase would find herself being given a second chance at motherhood when her cousin Gabriel Volant tragically dies, leaving his young daughter Apolline an orphan.
Lets just say that Lissie has a tendency of taking in other peoples' children that are either disowned or orphaned and raising them as her own... which probably stems from the fact that she was never actually able to raise the one child that was actually made from her flesh and blood.
Lissie was very accepting of Mathilde Ollivier when she married Étienne. She even went as far as to encourage her brother to be patient with his new wife, understanding that she was being brought into a whole different environment compared to what she was used to back in France.
During Mathilde's performance as her first introduction to her future in-laws, Céléase went with her family to support Étienne. She was captivated by the young dancer, perhaps being the only one of her family who truly saw the message of dedication Mathilde longed to provide Étienne once they were married.
Lissie and Mathilde bonded over their love for all different forms of art, which helped the new Rosier bride to find a dependable source of comfort during her years of isolation and misplacement once she moved to England.

Starting with the current Queen's hairdresser, Frédéric Van Espen steppend into the position in 2013, just before she became Queen of the Belgians, and has been styling her for national and international events since then. He has also worked with Elisabeth and Eléonore.

He's the owner of Didier & Rosalinde hair salon in Brussels, but he usually works wiith Mathilde in the private quarters at Laeken Castle. Looking at the website and portfolio you can see the similarities of his other works and what we've seen on Mathilde for a while:

I found an interview on the occasion of his 10th anniversary as the Queen's hairdresser where Frédéric gave a lot of detals of his work with Mathilde, even how it all started (second link below). According to what he said to HLN he's good friend with Edouard Vermeulen at Natan and he recommended him to Mathilde's team because her previous hairdresser was quitting.
His very first work was for Willem-Alexander's enthronement events, a tiara event to launch his career as the Queen's hairdresser, and not a simple gala, but an event for history books. I gotta confess that even if it's not an updo, Mathilde's hair on the day of the entronement it's one of my fave looks on her and I do see a change in style from the previous years.

Frédéric talked about how sometimes is dissatisfied with his work and that he notice little mistakes and is concerned about the outcome but that Mathilde reacts light-heartedly with a "Oh, that happens!" and I think that's the most on-brand Mathilde.
He also stated that when there are public events, he styles Mathilde at 7AM at Laeken, but on the occasional time, she goes to his salon and they have a private box for high profile clients such as her or, surprise, Prince Laurent. Frédéric also talked about when there's a state visit or during national day, he goes to the palace several times because everytme Mathilde changes clothes, he match the hair with the outfit, or when there's a trip abroad, he works on the plane in the stewards cabin without a mirror (talk about trust).

While he talks about what Mathilde likes, he says that she likes to stick to her classic style, but that Elisabeth now that she came of age give him more room to experiment. This interview was made 2 years ago, and I can't assure that he always does Elisabeth's har, but because she isn't a full-time working royal and her events are pretty limited, it's pretty safe to say that he's the one behind her two tiara appearances.

And I don't want to end this post without mentioning Paola's two known hairdressers: Claude Noterdam and Alain Tholl de l'Enclos. While Alain is also mentioned as her hairdresser, my guess from what I actually found, is that Claude was her main hairdresser for about 40 years. He was the owner of Maison Roger in Brussels and in 2016 he stepped down handing the salon to Alain and that's why he is also mentioned, because of the conection to Maison Roger.
Claude Noterdame started working with her when she was newly engaged to Albert, so he was the one behind those big updos we all liked (because we do agree that she had the best hair of her generation of Queens, right?)

He said that she visited his salon at least once a week, but when she couldn't he went to work at Belvédère Palace. He also accompained her to visits to the United States of Lebanon.
I actually found a small interview that RTL did in 2017 with Claude where he shows an archive of pictures of her updos that I would kill to see for myself and he also keeps pictures of a young Claude with Paola in different gatherings. It's in french and I understand just a little bit. Here it is in case you want to see those pictures and him talkng for 5 minutes:
Of course there's less information about the older generation's hairdressers, or at least is harder for me because of the limited resources in languages I don't speak (you should see me translating the dutch interviews hahaha). But at least there's something to offer you in these series of royal hairdressers.

To close this belgian edition,, I found a few titbits about Alain: he also styled Mathilde (probably before Frédéric came into the picture in 2013) and Princess Claire. He also works with Princess Laurentien of The Netherlands and both ladies usually have their hair done like any other client in the salon. He also stated that when they're in Belgum, he styles Princesses Marie Astrid and Margaretha of Luxembourg and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie.
