Cordenons Ch D QF: Marco Bortolotti/Matthew Christopher Romios [2] def. Roy Stepanov/Luis Britto 7-5, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
While R. Stepanov/L. Britto had fair chances in setting up the first set, M. Bortolotti/M.C. Romios appeared more anticipative at times, firing to the space or passing it through in the crucial moments. This became more evident on the second set, as paced returns from the latter went after the former's forehand side, which erred as it became more susceptible to attacks. This way, the second seeds converted 33% of their break points, leaving R. Stepanov/L. Britto with non-conversion thanks to being clutch on serve.
Somehow, M. Bortolotti/M.C. Romios' service game statistics turned out to also be stable. They scored an ace throughout the match and had an outstanding 80% winning percentage, 7% more than R. Stepanov/L. Britto, where even they avoided the slightest troubles. However, due to their 3 double faults, R. Stepanov/L. Britto faded their second serve winning percentage 37% below the second seeds, adding more vulnerability outside of the panic, and some noticeable +1 errors midway, which confirmed how attack-prone their second serves were from the ground.
In the semifinals later on, M. Bortolotti/M.C. Romios will face third seeds Arjun Kadhe/Ramkumar Ramanathan, who earlier defeated Andrea Picchione/Giorgio Ricca 6-4, 6-3 in a firmer showing. This could be a close encounter with their shot execution being one of the most critical points, either through their groundstrokes or as one of them brought the other forward. To add, this could also be one of those matches of the day, which might have delivered at their best.

Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Intriguingly, the majority of the second set mostly ended with (almost) smooth service game holds. This was not the cade in the eighth game, where M. Bortolotti/M.C. Romios' smash equalized the point before their anticipative backhand return got L. Britto's +1 forehand to err for their one-point lead. However, proceeding to have their break point through a working volley, the second seeds' preceding forehand allowed them to timely break to 5-3.
As a result, M. Bortolotti/M.C. Romios earned an opportunity to serve for the match. Even if they conceded 2 points, they clutched it on serve and took the second set 6-3, thus securing their spot in tomorrow's semifinals as well.

After defeating Courtney John Lock/Siddhant Banthia 7-6(5), 7-5 earlier in the first round, Roy Stepanov/Luis Britto took on second seeds Marco Bortolotti/Matthew Christopher Romios in the quarterfinals, who previously defeated Ivan Liutarevich/Szymon Walkow 7-6(5), 7-5(4) in a highly competitive match in the previous round. While the first half of this match appeared competitive, the firmer pair with their balance nailed the second set, especially in some pressure points on their return.
Interestingly, at the second game, R. Stepanov/L. Britto faced a break point (on the deciding point) to M. Bortolotti/M.C. Romios' working pass, where the former successfully held their serves to 1-1. This was also the case in the fourth game, where a failed volley from the former pair foiled their second game point, which forced the deciding point (and having to face another break point) before an unreturned serve secured their service game hold to 2-2.
While in most occasions, R. Stepanov/L. Britto mostly held from 0-30 down, it was not the case in the 12th game, where they should have served to stay in the set. There, as M. Bortolotti/M.C. Romios started with a forehand return ace, they continued with their preceding forehand that led L. Britto to err his forehand response (6-5* to 0-30). Somehow, their working volley fumbled R. Stepanov/L. Britto's game point, which became their set point before it was converted due to L. Britto's forehand error, breaking for the first set (7-5) to highlight the importance of balanced return under pressure.

New Delhi Ch D QF: Piotr Matuszewski/Matthew Christopher Romios [3] def. M. Rifqi Fitriadi/Ryuki Matsuda 6-4, 7-5 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP/WTA Joint App
Rifqi/R. Matsuda almost pulled the comeback once again since they came back from 0-4 down to create a more competitive second set, but as soon as P. Matuszewski/M.C. Romios regained their service game range, they could not sustain the rhythm. The difference was infinitesimal between them, except the final shots on the critical points, which helped them converting 50% of their break points (8) than Rifqi/R. Matsuda's 29% conversion rate from their 7 chances.
Furthermore, the third seeds appeared slightly more solid and clinical on serve despite Rifqi/R. Matsuda dug deep trying to come back from deficit. In this case, even though the latter landed 63% of their first serves, the former won 6% more points from their first serves, which got them through the pressure points on serve. On the other hand, Rifqi/R. Matsuda's second serves appeared vulnerable as they only had 33% of their second serve points, 29% lesser than the third seeds, which did not assist them to get out of the sticky situation.
In the semifinals, P. Matuszewski/M. Romios will face French pair Constantin Bittoun Kouzmine/Maxime Janvier, who stunned the second seeds Arjun Kadhe/Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 7-6(4), 6-7(4), [10-6] in a highly competitive encounter. Should be another exciting clash, with the minimum margin possible on both pairs' peaks!

The second set was its own rollercoaster since it might have seemed that P. Matuszewski/M.C. Romios headed for a demolition path, which was not the case as Rifqi/R. Matsuda kept digging. It all started from the former's smooth forehand winner that created their break point before the eventual break to break early 1-0. After consolidating their position to 2-0, they ended up doubling the break after a let cord moment from Rifqi/R. Matsuda's baseline side thanks to a working volley finish to break back 3-0.
Rifqi/R. Matsuda then hung on by holding their service games 2 games later (4-1) before breaking back to 4-2 due to the third seeds' forehand error. After holding their serves to 4-3, Rifqi/R. Matsuda dug deep once again and broke back to 4-4 thanks to R. Matsuda's forehand winner right on deciding point. They went on consolidating to 5-4, levelling the play once again.
However, the moment was insufficient to create a comeback victory as P. Matuszewski/M.C. Romios regained their range. It was marked by a successful volley to create their break point, eventually breaking to 6-5 to earn their chance to serve for the match. Despite having to face a deciding point, the third seeds affirmed their clinical finish on serve by serving it out to 7-5, thus taking the second set and secured their spot in the semifinals.

The doubles action in the New Delhi Challenger followed up from the previous singles second-round matches, featuring third seeds Piotr Matuszewski/Matthew Christopher Romios, who advanced after Enrico Dalla Valle/Goncalo Oliveira withdrew, and alternates M. Rifqi Fitriadi/Ryuki Matsuda, who stunned Rithvik Choudury Bollipalli/Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha 7-6(5), 4-6, [11-9] after being 0-6 down and saving 3 match points in the match tie-break. This ended up making a competitive match, but those who had a functional setup and could maintain it would stand out in this match.
In the first set, after two consecutive holds, Rifqi/R. Matsuda started with a double fault midway before the third seeds' return ace resulted in the creation of their break point. Eventually, P. Matuszewski/M.C. Romios broke to 2-1 due to Rifqi/R. Matsuda's failed volley, proceeded with a consolidation to 3-1 afterward.
Since then, they had not looked back, but it did not end with a demolition since Rifqi/R. Matsuda ended up holding their service games. Then came the third seeds' opportunity to serve for the first set, where they successfully held to 0 to take the set 6-4, thus affirming their clinical showing on serve despite the alternates' maintained competitiveness in between.

Sydney Ch D SF: Ryan Seggerman/Patrik Trhac def. Matthew Christopher Romios/Dane Sweeny 6-2, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
What a statement from R. Seggerman/P. Trhac, who came down under with a bang. They were aggressive from their forehand side, mostly well-executed and well-anticipated until it caught Romios/D. Sweeny mostly off-guard, often marked by their unforced errors to create their 7 break points, breaking four times along the way. Their only break point came after D. Sweeny's lob to save a match point, but it was insufficient due to R. Seggerman/P. Trhac's solid serving.
Furthermore, R. Seggerman/P. Trhac also had a solid service game. Serving 5 more aces than Romios/D. Sweeny, R. Seggerman/P. Trhac was dominant through their first serves with a 90% winning percentage. In contrast, Romios/D. Sweeny's second serves turned out to be vulnerable, with only 27% winning percentage faded by their 3 double faults, 28% lesser than R. Seggerman/P. Trhac's 55% rate, considering how often they got rushed during their follow-ups as a result of this vulnerability's exposure.
In tomorrow's finals, R. Seggerman/P. Trhac will face the winner between Blake Bayldon/Kody Pearson and third seeds Jisung Nam/Ruben Gonzales, whose match have yet to commence due to Jisung Nam's singles match still ongoing by the conclusion of this match. This could be interesting to see how R. Seggerman/P. Trhac's aggression fares within two consecutive weeks, with a possibility of this being a closer encounter than today's semifinals. Could be an exciting match as well!

After two consecutive holds started the second set, R. Seggerman/P. Trhac once again struck from their return game, breaking in just one blink (2-1) thanks to their first strikes, with their forehands caught D. Sweeny's volley side off-guard to create their break point before the eventual conversion. R. Seggerman/P. Trhac then quickly consolidated the lead to 3-1, but somehow doubled the break to 5-2 thanks to their exceptional return game from their forehands, which resulted in Romios/D. Sweeny's erroneous responses.
The double break lead allowed R. Seggerman/P. Trhac to serve for the match. Despite the failed volley and D. Sweeny's backhand lob saving their own match points, they avoided more trouble and sealing the match with an ace, taking the second set 6-2 to secure their second consecutive Challenger finals appearance.

Ryan Seggerman, who graduated from Princeton University (for his undergraduate degree) and University of North Carolina (pursuing Masters of Business Administration), and Patrik Trhac, who graduated from Idaho State University, somehow dubbed the next Catten (1.0, Julian Cash/Henry Patten), shone under the radar down under when they won the Playford Challenger title, but only after they won 7 ITF doubles titles together, with the latest being ITF M25 Zapopan 2 weeks before the Playford Challenger. In Sydney Challenger, they sought their second Challenger final appearance after notably stunning the second seeds Rinky Hijikata/Mac Kiger 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, facing an interesting challenge in Matthew Christopher Romios/Dane Sweeny, who defeated Blake Ellis/Colin Sinclair 6-4, 7-6(7) in the quarterfinals.
Compared to being competitive, this match appeared to be an almost one-way traffic with succinct point construction in between. Some first strike forehands from R. Seggerman/P. Trhac caught Romios off-guard, especially from the net, which caused the early break to 1-0 before they quickly consolidated to 2-0. The case was almost the same in the third game where their forehand down-the-line winner opened the path before breaking 2 points later, consolidating their lead to 4-0 right after.
Romios/D. Sweeny then avoided the demolition on their serve to hold their service game 4-1, while R. Seggerman/P. Trhac had not looked back and kept dominating the flow from the baseline. They then had the opportunity to serve for the first set, where their working serve+1, including a swift volley +1 to secure the first set 6-2, affirming their dominance through their clear point construction as the set went by.

Cordenons Ch D SF: Andrew Paulson/Jiri Barnat def. Daniel Cukierman/Neil Oberleitner 7-6(3), 4-6, [17-15] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
D. Cukierman/N. Oberleitner tried to raise their game in the second set through more paced returns, which carried them through their second set until forcing a match tie-break. However, after the match being brought to the match tie-break, despite the sluggish start, they tried to maintain their range, but sustained pressure on return towards the end despite dragging it a little bit longer from 1-9 down. As a result, D. Cukierman/N. Oberleitner created a whopping 14 break points, 11 more than A. Paulson/J. Barnat, who converted 33% of their 3 break points earlier in the first set, trying to optimize their chances.
Interestingly, D. Cukierman/N. Oberleitner nailed their service games as well. Scoring 4 aces than J. Barnat/A. Paulson's 3, the former won 6% more of their first serve points than the latter, which helped them getting out of some troubles. However, as risky as their second serves looked, especially in the match tie-break, they still had the slight edge as they won 54% of their second serve points as the Czech pair double-faulted 7 times.
In the finals, second seed Marco Bortolotti/Matthew Christopher Romios await, where they defeated third seeds Arjun Kadhe/Ramkumar Ramanathan 7-6(2), 6-4. While there could be some things left in the tank after this match, this could also be interesting on how they managed their point construction under pressure after it became heavily tested in this match. Should be one of those exciting doubles finals to look forward to for the day!

Cordenons Ch D R1: Roy Stepanov/Luis Britto def. Courtney John Lock/Siddhant Banthia 7-6(5), 7-5 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Despite the majority of the second set being played the upcoming day due to rain, R. Stepanov/L. Britto successfully maintained their range even if there were several hurdles from the ground. Through some occasional net-game poaches and forcing Courtney/S. Banthia to err some shots from the baseline, the former pair created 10 break points (some of which came from the deciding points), converting 40% of them while the latter could only convert 3 out of 8 break points throughout the match.
Besides, it appeared that both pairs had distinct service game strengths throughout the match. Scoring 2 aces than Courtney/S. Banthia's 0, R. Stepanov/L. Britto won 74% of their first serve points, 20% more than the former pair, which helped them navigating several problems on their serves. On the other hand, they risked a lot of second serves that they fell short to Courtney/S. Banthia, where their 6 double faults faded R. Stepanov/L. Britto's second serve winning percentage 1% below Courtney/S. Banthia, who double-faulted two times lesser (3 to 6) throughout the match.
They went on playing the quarterfinals later that day and got defeated by Marco Bortolotti/Matthew Christopher Romios 5-7, 3-6 (match report coming up) two timeslots after this first-round match. There were several fair chances, but the closest moments got to them, including the pressing moments on their second serves. It was too close, but still competitive.

New Delhi Ch D R1: Ryuki Matsuda/M. Rifqi Fitriadi [Alt] def. Rithvik Choudury Bollipalli/Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha 7-6(5), 4-6, [11-9] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Digging deep and maintaining their return under pressure were one of the reasons behind Rifqi/R. Matsuda's comeback during the first set tie-break and the match tie-break. Even though it all might have looked perfect for N. Kaliyanda Poonacha/R. Bollipalli, who had 3 break points and converted 66% of them, the alternates had a 100% break point conversion rate only from the early break in the second set thanks to a working volley, but they managed to take their chances in the tie-breakers, which resulted in their victory by the end of the match.
Interestingly, N. Kaliyanda Poonacha/R. Bollipalli had slightly more solid service games. Scoring 2 aces while Rifqi/R. Matsuda was unable to, the Indian pair had a slight advantage on their first serves by 1%, winning 76% of their first serve points. On the other hand, second serves became Rifqi/R. Matsuda's trouble spots as they only had a 42% winning percentage, 13% lower than N. Kaliyanda Poonacha/R. Bollipalli, which highlighted the importance of return games in pressure points.
In the quarterfinals, Rifqi/R. Matsuda will face third seeds Piotr Matuszewski/Matthew Christopher Romios, who advanced after Enrico Dalla Valle/Goncalo Oliveira withdrew. Considering the return game necessary in this match to stand out, it could also play a crucial role in tomorrow's quarterfinal match! Should be an exciting watch to carry the action on!

ITF M25 Jakarta (Apr 17) D R1: Justin Barki/Igor Sijsling def. Matthew Christopher Romios/Brandon Walkin [1] 6-3, 4-6, [10-8] Match Recap
Tumblr media
Justin Barki/Igor Sijsling's point to break 4-0 in the 1st set (📸 ITF Media)
Another doubles match headlined the main court today in Jakarta after David Agung Susanto’s victory, with Justin Barki/Igor Sijsling taking on the first seeds Matthew Christopher Romios/Brandon Walkin. Last week, while Justin/Sijsling made it to the quarterfinals as a pair, only Romios played with Dayne Kelly and reached the quarterfinals, since Walkin did not enter the doubles draw.
The first set started with an early break from Justin/Sijsling to 2-0 after a volley error from Romios/Walkin, signifying their erratic service game since they also double-faulted in their break point creation. However, after holding their service games 3-0, the Indonesian-Dutch pair converted anther break point they faced to 4-0 after a volley exchange, where Romios/Walkin’s response was insufficient to follow up, resulting in the volley going that wide. Somehow, the former got broken back to 1-4, but managed to stay stable and take the first set 6-3 even if they were a point behind at 5-3 thanks to Romios/Walkin’s working volley. By then, it appeared that the net game remained essenital to prevail in this match.
Tumblr media
Matthew Christopher Romios/Brandon Walkin took the 2nd set 6-3 after a volley exchange (🎥 ITF Media)
In the second set, Romios/Walkin started stepping up their game by keep holding their service games. Furthermore, it appeared they improved their volleys toward the end of the second set. After they held their service games to 5-4, they created a set point several points later at the expense of Sijsling’s failed volley response (which went too wide). Even if Justin/Sijsling saved them with two unreturned serves, Romios/Walkin’s volley winner right at the deciding point (which poached Sijsling) resulted in their set point conversion to 6-4, prompting this match to go the distance: into the match tie-break.
Justin Barki/Igor Sijsling’s match point conversion to 10-8 in the match tie-break (🎥 ITF Media)
The match tie-break started with a demolition where Justin/Sijsling initially had the momentum and led 5-1 as a combination of their working service games and how they made Romios/Walkin to also move forward to the net, where the latter was spotted erring their volley response numerous times with shots fired too far away. The Australian pair somehow rediscovered their rhythm right after Justin’s double fault, but it was not sufficient as Justin/Sijsling had their working one-two-punch along the way as well to keep leading at 7-5. At the end of the day, two unreturned serves got them out of the pressure and enabled them to win the match tie-break to 10-8.
Quite an upset, on paper, but everything could happen until the game, set, and match was called. In this case, Justin/Sijsling stood out thanks to their reliable serves and working net games under pressure (especially at deciding point and some tied scores). In the quarterfinals, they will face Seo Yong Han/Sanhui Shin, who defeated another Indonesian pair in Lucky Candra Kurniawan/Tegar Abdi Satrio Wibowo 6-3, 6-4. This could be an interesting test, but maybe a replication of a deeper run is on the sights.
