Thursday, August 15: Metal Allegiance, "Destination: Nowhere"
Metal Allegiance was perfectly fine as a lark, a way for journeymen and semi-legends to hang out and play some covers for fun, but nobody was looking for them (especially their bassist and semi-official leader, who nobody outside of these musicians had ever heard of) to write songs and put out albums.  But Mark Menghi was apparently a strong enough networker to not only land a deal with Nuclear Blast but get a fairly robust roster of players and frontmen to commit time to writing and recording fresh material, though to be fair a good chunk of these guys will appear on pretty much anything they were invited to, with Matt Heafy being a prime example on “Destination: Nowhere”.  As expected, the track mostly played like a Trivium outtake, but nobody sounded like they were phoning it in so the tune was actually fairly catchy and heavy: the riffing was stout and fleet, and Heafy wisely worked his mid register and didn’t lean too hard on trying to sing.  It still felt a bit tossed off, which wasn’t entirely unintentional- Metal Allegiance was supposed to be about having fun, after all- but kept “Destination: Nowhere” from feeling essential.

All Is Fair in Death and War - Character Analysis/Notes
Narinder - Anger
Tumblr media
For the sake of my sanity, we’re going to pretend this gif primarily focuses on Narinder.
Quick fun fact: On my Goat/Extra Hard save file, Narinder got the Jerk trait (which I refuse to correct for obvious reason). I'm going to make any and all interactions with him as a jerk canon in AIFiDaW.
So anyway here's him bullying Goatfrey for their crush on Shamura before he steals their money (I know my cult is ugly I'm redecorating it).
(Keep reading for character breakdown) First Chapter: All Is Fair in Death and War - Chapter 1 - IlidaeAndQuill - Cult of the Lamb (Video Game) [Archive of Our Own] (THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR 1,000 HITS FLMGKDSNG - If you read it, I hope you enjoy!!)
Tumblr media
Primary Motivation: Narinder has two opposing character motivations: to reclaim a semblance of divinity without the Red Crown, and to assure the safety of his traveling disciples Baal and Aym. These two motivations directly contrast each other, and with the additional plotline created from rescuing the Bishops, he struggles to decide which one to prioritize. Lots of internal conflict with this one.
Character Traits: Prudish af. Concise with his 'work' (killing, he's literally just killing people) but sees no reason to assist others without probable payment. The sting of his betrayal, both from the Lamb and his siblings, runs too deep.
Tumblr media
Theme Songs (Lyrical): "Death" - Matthew K Heafy, Sean Long & Mike Malyan, "you should see me in a crown" - Billie Eilish, "Gladiator" - Jann Theme Songs (Instrumental): "Sins of Hyrule" - ROZEN, "Aurora in Faerieland" - James Newton Howard Additional Narilamb song from his p.o.v. because the devs did it and I want to too: "LET THE WORLD BURN" - Chris Grey
Voice Claim: Cobra Bubbles - Lilo and Stitch Dialogue Pattern: He speaks formally when he's focused but gets sloppy with his dialogue as he loses himself to anger/irritation.
Outfit Inspiration: Regal and stealthy - a true assassin's garb. Most of his clothes are stolen, as he refuses to wear the cultist uniform given by Castor. He does prefer heavy robes but sticks to lighter garments for crusades/daily activity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Narinder is a strong supporting character (and if we want to get technical, he's Castor's love interest, but I hate assigning that title to characters - I don't want a character's romantic plotline to determine their importance in a story) and the primary representation of the Anger stage of grief. This is seen through his personality traits/reactions to story events, but also through his pyromancy. His fire, representing his anger, literally burns him alive every time he uses it. He must learn/develop a way to safely use it, or risk losing himself to his rage.
Additionally: his anger is represented through the fact that he is angry at the world/fate. With my own grief, I often get angry, thinking it "wasn't fair" that my dog, of all creatures, got heart disease and died young. I portray this same anger through Narinder. His imprisonment wasn't fair. His loss of godhood wasn't fair. And, the unconscious, yet most important thing, is what happened to Baal and Aym was not fair.
"Ratau turned to watch the sparing brothers again. His fingers curled around his hands, nails digging far into his flesh. “Yes, but… This is inhumane. My lord, they know how to fight! We both see that! Be fair with them, please.”
“If the world was fair, none of us would be here.” The One Who Waits flicked his hand, and Ratau disappeared to his mortal realm." - That whole segment comes from his anger - it's not fucking fair what happened to the three of them. And oooohhhh writing that anger for him is soooooo satisfying.
Random Trivia/Facts: - Despite his regal tastes, Narinder's favorite food is plain baked salmon (with some spices ofc I'm not a monster). - Narinder was the first character I was able to give a distinct motivation. His internal conflict between reclaiming godhood and setting his disciples free was way too intriguing; I had to develop that first. - That said, the only way for him to add to the theme/move towards acceptance is if he goes against his initial desire of reclaiming divinity to help the ones he cares for. This is to say that I, the author, am trying to balance his development like a fucking tightrope walker. - KLEPTOMANIAC (If only for petty reasons). - He might be a pyromaniac too idk. - In "Yngya's Repose," Narinder fell in love with the Lamb shortly before their destined duel over the crown. In AIFiDaW, Narinder is still (somewhat) in love with the Lamb, he is just too angry to let himself feel anything other than the hurt of betrayal. - To add to that: In the scene where Narinder falls for the Lamb (Year 3: Autumn) - he specifically falls in love with Castor because they were kind to Baal and Aym. There were a few other factors outside that, but seeing Castor treat his disciples as their own was the final push he needed to fully fall in love. - And then he had to fight them to the death isn't that fun? :) - Narinder's parenting teaching style with Baal and Aym is largely inspired by Moro and San (Princess Mononoke) and Maleficent and Aurora (Maleficent).
Tumblr media
Thank you for reading! Narinder is a super complex character; my only hope is that I give him the writing he deserves. He is, of course, featured in "All Is Fair in Death and War," but his primary appearance is in the short prequel to that: "Yngya's Repose." I hope to make a podfic of that story soon so people who don't have the time/ability to sit down and read it can still enjoy the story :)

Something I think gets glossed over about the Hymns of the Unholy is that they are, in fact, hymns. Just spoken/sung over metal instrumentals.
What makes a hymn a hymn? Well, in classical hymns there are only verses, no choruses. And that's exactly what we're dealing with here. That's not speculation either.
In an interview with Howard P Johnson, he talks about how one of the challenges with writing these songs was that its just a series of verses. Each section referring to a character or telling a part of a story. So to make it all sound good together, each verse had to have a really strong part that sounded like a chorus, even though it wasn't.
Another trait is that the lyrics and the music are created separately. And that applies too. Both Howard P. and Matthew K. Heafy mention a couple times that this was the case. Pick Up Goliath wrote most of the tracks while they were still looking for a drummer.
Finally, classical hymns use modified-strophic form, which the composition does. (That's why there's so much repetition)
So it's actually an important detail that different sections of different character's melodies are used to make up each track. I forget which one, but in one of the interviews, it's pretty explicitly stated that Pick Up Goliath followed the melodies established by River Boy very closely because each melody is meant to call upon a certain character/characters.
It also means all these lyrics are intended as scripture, so someone heard Kallamar beg for his life and fucking immortalized it in their bible. X'D Justified crash out, ngl.
Overall, it suggests that each song is about the mini-bosses as much as it's about each Bishop. Also since there's different melodies even within their themes, that would suggest that not even the Bishop's themes are just invoking them.
And like. Speaking of Kallamar. His section in Pestilence, where it uses a direct quote from the game? It, oddly, is the only part of Pestilence that doesn't use the melody from his theme. It stands out because if you listen to the instrumental, either Kallamar or Saleos is playing at all times.
There's a metaphor in there somewhere.
Something, something, being drowned out or overshadowed by something that's not yourself.
The entity being addressed in each set of hymns is presumably the one in the title. There's lots of observations to be made about the hymns, like the aggression and entitlement one of the speakers has over Death, or what an awful time Kallamar (Saleos?) is having, but one really catches my eye.
And it's that Conquest is (was) a God of Death. I know you hear me, God of Death. I'll crush the Crown until there's nothing left.
I pull up to the function with a poem about how I'm gonna kick your ass. And then i fucking LOSE. ily not-Shamura.

Would you ever think of voice claims for the RnS characters? (Asking because I am god awful at imagining their voices)
I'm not the best person to ask about this because I choose voices based on songs, generally speaking? So I don't have like, actors or voice actors in my head for them. I can give you the songs I associate with their voices? If that helps?
Too much under the cut tbh.
Tanguish:
I associate his voice with singers like CG5, LeGrande. His voice to me is in the higher range, with a little bit of a crack/rasp to it, especially when he whispers or speaks in the lower register of his voice. He's expressive. He gets soft and loud and soft again, with a variety of pitches and tones. His stutter mostly appears on hard consonants, ts ds and ps, because when he's nervous his teeth chatter. He tends to downturn his sentences so they sound apologetic.
Songs: Give A Little [CG5, LeGrande], Run Little Hero [LeGrande], Dancing After Death [Matt Maeson], You're Not Welcome [Naethan Apollo]
Tango:
Sounds like Tangotek, though he's considerably more tired, especially at the start of the fic. I recommend listening to some of the late night Decked Out II streams for the vibe I'm thinking of. It's more calm than his YouTube videos, and he tends to drop his voice lower as the stream goes on.
Helsknight:
Helsknight is a little harder to pin down because I don't have a clear of a voice for him in my head, and I don't think he can sing? So all those song voice claims don't work as well. He sounds angry. He sounds like he yells a lot. His voice is deeper, and it growls. Man has gravel in his voice box. Think 90s alt rock singer growl.
Songs: Intro III [NF, a little too high in pitch, but this is the cadence/anger level I picture when he's shouting. This is how he and Wels argue.], The Wolf in Your Darkest Room [Matthew Mayfield], Hero [Chad Kroeger, Josey Scott], Had Enough [Breaking Benjamin], Somebody That I Used to Know [Jonathan Young].
Also, a bit of a left turn, but if you'd like a more feminine voice for Helsknight, my voice claim would be Wayfaring Stranger by Melody Gardot.
Welsknight:
Welsknight is NF to me. Pick a song. It's 110% because whenever I script Wels / Hels fights in my head, NF songs are the main ones I use. But he just Sounds NF to me now. Welsknight has a similar cadence to Helsknight, especially when he's angry. When he's not angry, his voice is noticeably higher and smoother. He hasn't broken it yelling quite so much, and he laughs easily.
Songs: Intro III [NF], HOPE [NF], All Eyes On You [Smash Into Pieces]. Head Up [The Score].
Martyn (Ofthearena):
He sounds exactly like Mr. Inthelittlewood. If the two ever stood in the same room, it would sound like there's an echo.
The Red King:
He sounds like? A wolf? Whenever someone has a wolf character, and their voice is deep and snarly. Stereotypical Big Bad Wolf vibes. I imagine his voice is kind of trashed because of the whole 'i was made in a ritual where someone chopped off my head' thing. Make him talk for more than a few minutes, and his voice turns into broken words and vocal disturbance. He coughs a lot during long conversations.
Songs: My Mother Told Me [Matthew K Heafy], Ó Valhalla [SKÁLD], Ride of the Valkyries [Brothers of Metal, the male voice is... perfect......]
EB: I don't really have a voice claim for EB :') he sounds like a vocaloid in my head. Deep cuts in fandom, but when Undertale used to do vocaloid versions of songs for the UT characters? There was a Gaster version of Echo that got really popular. That's the closest I really have to a voice claim. And then the dialup-style noise that plays during the musical breaks is generally what I think of when I think of his voice turning to static. It's just a bunch of garbled, chunky noises.
Uh! Hope this helps!

British Guitarist SOPHIE LLOYD Teams Up With HALESTORM's LZZY HALE On 'Imposter Syndrome' Single
British guitarist Sophie Lloyd has released her latest single,"Imposter Syndrome", a collaboration with HALESTORM frontwoman Lzzy Hale. The song is the title track of Sophie's upcoming full-length album, which will arrive on November 10. Other guests set to appear on the CD include STEEL PANTHER's Michael Starr, ATREYU's Brandon Saller, TRIVIUM's Matt Heafy, Canadian singer Lauren Babic and BLACK STONE CHERRY's Chris Robertson.
The "Imposter Syndrome" music video is expected to make its online debut on Friday, October 6.
The 27-year-old Lloyd told Guitar World about the LP: "I always said this album was going to be me paying homage to my 15-year-old self. This is an album I wrote for that girl.
"I'm so fortunate to work with all of the amazing singers on the record, and I can honestly say I've been listening to them for years.
"I can't tell you how gratifying it's been — I'd write the songs, and then we'd send them off and hear back from the singers. They were, like, 'Yeah, I really dig this. I'm up for it.' It's all turned out better than I could have imagined."
Regarding the album title, Sophie said: "Well, the imposter syndrome is a thing. It's a phenomenon a lot of people experience in any field; not just music, but you basically feel like you're an imposter. You don't deserve to be where you are, and at any moment people will uncover you for what you are. I feel like I've broken out of that now. I proved to myself, like, 'Yeah, you're here for a reason. You're good enough.'"
Asked if she is thinking of forming a band with one dedicated singer, Sophie said: "That's what we're trying to think about: 'How do we tour this?' We've got a few ideas. We're not sure whether we want to get a full-time vocalist — well, maybe. I guess it's just about finding a vocalist that fits you and inspires you. We might try something where we have big screens and we get vocalists to record a performance. The violinist Lindsey Stirling does that. Visually, it's pretty amazing.”
"Imposter Syndrome" track listing:
01. Do Or Die (feat. Nathan James) 02. Pressure (feat. Brandon Saller) 03. Imposter Syndrome (feat. Lzzy Hale) 04. Let It Hurt (feat. Chris Robertson) 05. Runaway (feat. Michael Starr) 06. Fall Of Man (feat. Matthew K. Heafy) 07. Lost (feat. Cole Rolland) 08. Hanging On (feat. Lauren Babic) 09. Avalanche (feat. Trevor McNevan) 10. Won't You Come (feat. Marisa Rodriguez) 11. Judge And Jury (feat. Tyler Connolly)

Curse of Flesh (feat. Matthew K. Heafy)
This curse of flesh I free myself from I fall on my own sword, bleeding myself out My body erased, collapsed in the sands I bore All that I am is everything I had asked for In these final moments of breath still in my weakened lungs I spill these words so incoherent but they fall on human ears no longer And the gods’ ears have wandered so far away from me, they couldn’t hear me screaming “Save us…
