The Seeking Heart...

"Seek first God's Kingdom, that is, become like the lilies and the birds, become perfectly silent — then shall the rest be added unto you." - Kierkegaard

Some people think of "purity of heart" in moral terms, such as not looking with lust on others, not coveting, etc., though these are really symptoms of disordered love... Genuine purity is a matter of focus, making a decision to believe the miracle in order to find the “good portion” and the “one thing necessary” (Luke 10:42). We “believe to see” (Psalm 27:13). Purity of heart therefore realizes that all that you’ve ever longed for is found in God alone. “There is but one good; that is God. Everything else is good when it looks to Him and bad when it turns from Him” (C.S. Lewis). It is a great, great gift from heaven to know God as your heart's true desire - to fully understand that your relationship with Him is the ultimate concern and very treasure of your existence.

It is the Spirit that gives life (John 6:63). The Holy Spirit imparts the “pulse” of the Divine Life, and we gain newness of life when we trust God for purification from our sins through Yeshua our LORD. As King David further attested: Lev tahor bara li Elohim – “Create in me a clean heart, O God” and renew a spirit of ‘yes’ within me (Psalm 51:10). Only the new heart (lev chadash) created by the agency of God's Spirit can possibly yield the life of the Spirit within us. The miracle of a new heart transforms your whole inner nature - with the impartation of new appetites, new passions, new desires, and the rebirth of your will.

If you struggle with being inwardly divided, conflicted, or lacking in courage, ask the LORD to give you true purity of heart, a heart that wholeheartedly wills the highest... As Yeshua attested: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" (Matt. 5:8).

What does Matthew 5 verse 36 mean?

Sermon on the Mount: The Pure in Heart (Mt 5:8)

“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God” - Matthew 5:8

This past Sunday Pastor Curtis preached on the eighth verse of the Beatitudes, this time dealing with the relationship between purity and seeing God. 

Purity is to be Holy as God is Holy (Leviticus 19:2, 1Peter 1:15-16)

Power to be pure is found in God’s love (1Peter 1:22)

Promise of purity is seeing God (1John 3:23)

In essence these points add up to a lifestyle that relates to further separation from sin and a closer relationship to God. The study today will go deeper into the verse, carefully going into each word of verse 8. This will hopefully lead to a deeper conviction and understanding of how a pure heart and seeing God relate to one another. 

Context and Recap 

Read and discuss verses 3-5. What do these verses establish about the blessed person’s state on earth? How would you sum it up in a word?

Read and discuss verse 6. What does it mean to be righteous? (recap from 3 weeks ago)

Interpretation

Pure - katharos in greek, means pure, clean, clear, ethically from corrupt desire, guilt

Heart - kardia in greek, means the heart, thoughts or feelings, the middle, center

See - horao in greek, to stare at, discern clearly, to experience

What does it mean to be “pure”? Read Titus 1:15-16, James 1:27 and 1 Peter 1:22. How do these verses help you to possibly understand what it means to be pure? 

What does the “heart” refer to? Read Matthew 5:28, 6:21, 12:34. What does Jesus seem to imply from these verses regarding the heart? 

What does it mean to “see” God? Read John 11:40 and Hebrews 12:14.  how is one able to see God from these verses? 

Now knowing the definitions of “pure in heart” and to “see” God, how would you try to articulate the relationship between the two without using the words “pure” or “see”? 

Application

Would you ever say you have “seen” God? What did that look like? 

What are some things that are stopping you from being “pure”? 

What are some practical things we can do to strive for purity? 

Have you felt that perhaps your impurity has held you back from seeing God?

The miracle of a new heart transforms your whole inner nature - with the impartation of new appetites, new passions, new desires, and the rebirth of your will.

If you struggle with being inwardly divided, conflicted, or lacking in courage, ask the LORD to give you true purity of heart, a heart that wholeheartedly wills the highest... As Yeshua attested: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" (Matt. 5:8).

many people are writing things in this world, inspired by so many things, there is truth and there is fiction. but the work of the Spirit and the Word remains. revelation (True illumination) is Spirit-inspired to open the heart (spirit) to rebirth (in the Son) and the mind to renewal (to come to see through baptism eyes)

there is a Church Body (and Bride) who have become the Spirit’s Temple and are here conserving spiritual truth as our True identity (as sons & daughters of our heavenly Father)

this is the beautiful mystery of A new Eve (pure Queen) and A new Adam which also points to the conservation of the truth of earthly marriage by our Creator’s design of a man & woman (A sacred lifelong covenant of husband & wife to be guarded with trust and faithfulness)
