(Red?) Racekid is illegal racer and has been racing for a long time. Not the best but definitely not the worst. Keeps his cool most the time and pulls off a lot of stuns. He will either win by a smidge or be ran off by the cops and have incomplete race / loose. Always finds a way out of whatever pickle he’s in and has funny quip about it. He’s willing to do anything for thrill of the ride, and frequently doesn’t think before he does something. Mainly just doing it because he belives in himself.

Neeancy is flag girl / with Racekid as not a racer but as more of moral support / love interest (??) She is in the car when he races and is back seat driver but she sits in the front. Shes the brains of the operation and keeps him from killing himself. She doesn’t race at all but is there to help with plans and strategy since she’s still really smart and can calculate like the air and shit and how it drags. She can get kinda crazy but Racekid likes crazy so it’s okay , she tells him off when he looses or does something stupid in the race and he just nods because he knows she’s right

Mad Max , sponsor/manager for Nikki . Schemes their way into races and does shit under the table. Wears a nice outfit and tells Nikki to “do what she does best”. Is a Bookie, makes bets on races but will make it in his favor . Has a watch and a bunch of different ids on him.

(Panther) Nikki is a reckless driver , hitting cars with hers and grinding them on walls. Has no fear with racing and having a fun time doing it. Gets hurt and acts like a wounded dog when hurt . Car frequently has to be repaired and it’s a pain in Maxs ass to fix

( Erode )Ered is cool racer who has a low rider with lots of mods. Purplely/pink with yellow accents. It can glow with led lights and shit. Very chill with her riding and doesn’t try to hurt the racers, not out of kindness it just doesn’t benefit her like Nikki. Top dawg with racing and wins against Racekid but there’s no bad blood between them. More of “you did good, maybe you’ll be a good as me one day :p” and she drives off. Plays music while she races .

Sasha races and is sponsor of Erin and Tabii. Will pay people to ruin the race for others and purposely sabotaged people. Has very nice car , not fully made for racing but it’s still really good. Does similar things to max but both don’t like each other because they are “different “ with the way they do it. She wears a helmet and it has a visor on it to keep her safe. Bought all the tokens and has a lot more then everyone else.

Erin is a slower driver then Tabii is, being more calculated and less or a risk taker. She has a dark blue car and focus more on accuracy and consistency then speed. Tabii can get bad road rage and if she looses she’ll be extra nasty next race or even after . Tabiis car is more angular and has white stripes. Sasha is hard on both of them if they loose and are lowkey scared of her.

Dolph is sketch artist and makes posters for the event. You can see them in dark parts of town with the list of racers on them. Anyone can sign up. Harrison owns a “bar” that many kids reside/hang out in to drink juice / caprimoons/ whatever like a normal dingy bar. He looks like a normal bar tender and does this instead of racing. He helped his brother get into illegal racing but got caught by Gwen and David, and got sent home. (And to a boarding school) he doesn’t mess with that kind of stuff anymore but still needed to make a living.

In some ways, last night’s Sammie awards—also known as the Oscars for federal employees—proceeded just as they do every year. In a packed auditorium a few blocks from the White House, government luminaries handed out medals to some of the nation’s most talented civil servants, recognizing groundbreaking research, major improvements in customer service, and top-notch stewardship of taxpayer money.

The ceremony, however, was unusual in one respect: Hardly any of the honorees took the stage to accept their awards. Instead, they stayed at their seats, away from the cameras. Public recognition of their good work in Donald Trump’s government, organizers feared, could cost them their jobs.

Such is the climate of fear that has pervaded the federal workforce during the second Trump administration, which has moved to shut down entire agencies, shrink the government through mass layoffs and inducements to quit, and crack down on dissent. The Partnership for Public Service, the nonprofit that awards the Sammies, was determined to hold the ceremony, but it did not want to put its honorees in additional jeopardy. ��The sensitivity is real,” Max Stier, the partnership’s CEO, told me. “We did not want to see them harmed in any way for being recognized for their work.” At least one federal employee who organizers wanted to honor was told by supervisors to not accept the award, Stier said. He called the administration’s assault on the civil service “a five-alarm fire.”

Past Sammie ceremonies—the awards’ full name is the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals—have hardly been controversial. Administrations of both parties have participated in the black-tie event since its debut in 2002, sending Cabinet secretaries and other high-ranking officials to serve as presenters and laud the achievements of their underlings. TV-news stars including CBS’s John Dickerson and PBS’s Judy Woodruff have taken turns as emcees. (The selection committee this year included Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic.) The evening is the one night a year when largely unheralded public servants are feted.

For many years, the nonprofit partnership operated inside the Washington establishment. It has remained studiously nonpartisan and worked closely with every presidential transition since George W. Bush, including, initially, the first Trump campaign. But the escalation of Trump’s attacks on federal employees has forced the partnership to take up a post, somewhat uncomfortably, in the opposition. Stier has fought the president’s efforts to convert thousands of nonpartisan civil servants into political appointees, a shift that he says would revive the discredited “spoils system” of 19th-century America. In turn, Trump allies have labeled Stier “a Democrat activist” because of his past work as a lawyer in the Clinton administration. He was also on Bill Clinton’s defense team when the president was impeached over his affair with Monica Lewinsky, then a White House intern.

The first Trump administration took part in the Sammies, but Stier said the partnership did not reach out this time around. “All the signals were that they were undermining excellence” rather than recognizing or honoring it, he said. “Therefore we did not believe we could do that.” As a result, the event felt at times like a reunion of a government in exile. Although the ceremony did include a taped appearance by a former George W. Bush chief of staff, Joshua Bolten, former Democratic officials were overrepresented. At one point, a former Barack Obama chief of staff, Denis McDonough, spoke alongside Jeff Zients, who was Joe Biden’s most recent chief of staff. At another, one of Obama’s Treasury secretaries, Timothy Geithner, appeared with Biden’s, Janet Yellen.

The Sammies usually take place in September, with a smaller event in the spring to announce finalists. But Stier decided to move up the celebration this year. He wasn’t sure how many of the honorees would still be working for the federal government in September. “We need the public to understand that this is urgent,” Stier said. “We cannot operate under the same timeline, because the destruction is happening so quickly.”

To guard against reprisal, the honorees sat in the audience and stood when their names were called, rather than appearing onstage to talk about their work in acceptance speeches. (The ceremony will air on some PBS stations next month.) The partnership appeared torn between recognizing the recipients publicly—none of their identities were hidden—and protecting them from any punishment if officials in the Trump administration objected to their remarks or believed they were making a political statement by standing in a literal spotlight. Although the partnership has traditionally been eager to make honorees available for interviews, a spokesperson this year said some were reluctant to speak publicly “given the current environment.”

I did talk with Dr. Laura Cheever, who received a Sammie for her decades of work managing federal programs combatting and treating HIV/AIDS. She retired in December—it was “long-planned,” she told me. She was now freer to speak, but she said she might have been at risk had she stayed, because she had signed a letter stating that recipients of federal HIV/AIDS money should be able to provide gender-affirming care to their clients—a position at odds with the Trump administration’s moves to block transgender-health services.

Cheever told me she thought the partnership’s efforts to shield its honorees from retaliation were necessary. Inside the government, she said, “people are working aggressively not to call attention to themselves or the work that they’re doing. They’re just trying to do their work.”

This year’s awards honored achievements across a wide swath of the government, many in areas targeted by DOGE or threatened by cuts Trump has proposed to Congress. An employee with the all-but-defunct USAID, Kathleen Kirsch, was recognized for leading efforts to help Ukraine rebuild its energy infrastructure after attacks by Russia. The IRS’s Maya Bretzius received a medal for reducing wait times in the agency’s call center. “Thanks, Maya, for making calls to the IRS a little less, shall we say, taxing,” McDonough joked in his speech. Others won awards for speedily cutting checks for COVID-era relief during the first Trump administration as well as for recovering fraudulent payments.

Trump’s name was not uttered during the hour-long program. But before and after the ceremony, the pall cast by his cuts to the workforce dominated. Attendees commiserated over the intrusions of DOGE and a job market suddenly stuffed with fired federal workers or those looking for a way out of the government. One attendee described a “heaviness” in his Virginia neighborhood, a suburb populated by federal workers who either had lost their jobs or feared losing them. A cancer scientist told me about research he had worked on for decades that was now at risk of losing funding. “There’s just sort of a miasma of concern that overrides everything else,” Cheever said, describing morale among her friends who are still in the government. “It’s like walking on eggshells all the time, which is just not a very comfortable place to be.”

One Sammie honoree did take the stage last night—the federal employee of the year, Dave Lebryk. But his award, too, carried reminders of a civil service under siege. Lebryk was recognized for his many years as the Treasury Department official responsible for the government’s payment system. Under both Republican and Democratic administrations, he oversaw trillions of dollars in annual disbursements—including the regular checks that go to Social Security recipients and veterans—while maintaining the security of a system that contains confidential information for millions of Americans. Lebryk has even seen the gold at Fort Knox. “It really does exist. It’s there,” he quipped during his speech.

But in late January, he ended his 35-year career in government, resigning rather than hand over access to Treasury’s sensitive payment system to Elon Musk’s lieutenants at DOGE. That act of resistance helped to explain his Sammie medal, as well as his willingness to publicly accept it: The federal employee of the year is, in fact, no longer a federal employee.

Outgoing Senate Republican leader and suspected turtle Mitch McConnell had the nerve to accuse two federal judges of playing politics after the judges reneged on their retirements following Donald Trump’s victory this year. “They rolled the dice that a Democrat could replace them, and now that he won’t, they’re changing their plans to keep a Republican from doing it,” McConnell said Monday in a speech on the Senate floor.

He warned that the judges would face ethics complaints if they remain on the bench. “If these circuit judges unretire because they don’t like who won the election, I can only assume they will face significant ethics complaints based on Canons 2 and 5 of the Code of Conduct for U.S. Judges, followed by serial recusal demands from the Department of Justice. And they’ll have earned it,” McConnell said in a huff. McConnell was referring to U.S. District Judge Max Cogburn of North Carolina and U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley of the Southern District of Ohio both announced they would remain on the bench in active service, preventing Trump from choosing their replacements. Already, Republicans were blocking President Joe Biden from choosing their replacements by utilizing the blue slip process, in which senators from the home state of the nominee can block their confirmation by objecting to their nomination. It takes a lot of nerve for McConnell, of all people, to make this complaint.

Yes, that McConnell, who stole a Supreme Court seat and multiple federal judgeships from President Barack Obama—which McConnell has called his greatest accomplishment in his long tenure of norm-breaking in the Senate.  McConnell refused to even hold a hearing for Merrick Garland, the judge Obama nominated to replace Antonin Scalia, who died suddenly. McConnell’s excuse was that the vacancy occurred less than a year from the next presidential election, and that voters should get to have a voice in choosing whom they wanted to replace Scalia on the high court.

Ship RPF and "relatability and self insert"

So I have seen this idea thrown around a few times now that ship RPFis just x reader fics with extra steps. And as an RPF writer who has written for many RPF ships over the years this just isn't the case. I can't speak for everyone, but I think that this idea stems from a certain way of thinking when it comes specifically to some modern expectations of literature, especially when it comes to the modern romance genre.

I want to start off my saying that I am not trying to shade or downgrade x reader fics. They are not my thing, but I see they have their place, people enjoy them, go crazy have fun out there.

This is going to be talking about why I think some people don't understand the ship RPF side of things and think it's the same as x reader fics. So let me explain my motivations and inspiration for why I write ship RPF, and let's look at where some bad assumptions about people's motivations come from about who reads and writes it and why.

Definitions for clarity.

X reader RPF: any ship where the reader is the one being shipped with a real person in a fictional scenario. Ex. Tom Cruise x reader.

Ship RPF: any ship between two real people that does not include the reader. Ex. Barack Obama x Harry Styles, or for a serious example Charles Leclerc x Max Verstappen.

These are both categories of RPF but they are very different.

I have seen people ask "Why write ship RPF when you really are just writing x reader with extra steps?" The short answer is: I'm not. I am not writing this RPF to be able to self insert.

The reason I write an RPF ship is because there is a specific thing about two people's dynamic that is interesting to me. A rivalry, a friendship, a bitter feud, something that exists between those two people and is full of storytelling potential. Relationship dynamics are varied and there is usually something unique about the way those two people interact that makes me want to explore that dynamic in depth.

The real people, their personalities, their history together matter in RPF ship fic. It would not be the same fic if it was made x reader, at least it wouldn't be good. Because that character would not be them (one of the real people in the ship) anymore, they'd lose all of their characterization that makes them them in the process of stripping them down to make them bland enough for self insert.

I like exploring people's perspectives that are different than mine, both good and bad, in fiction. The fact these people are different from me is part of what makes them so interesting.

My RPF ships to me have a unique chemistry and that is what I aim to dig into with my RPF fic.

Now I want to get into why I think people say "all RPF is self insert"

I think it stems from the more modern notion that all romance is for self insert purposes to some extent. Over the last 10 years, I have seen increasing emphasis placed on the relatability of the main character in a story. That is a high value trait to readers, and this seems to be especially true with modern romance. Because yes, it seems many readers are looking for something romantic, spicy, or some mixture of the two, to relate to.

But I don't think all characters need to be relatable. I personally enjoy reading about characters I have nothing in common with. I find the human condition be relatable enough in it's many facets. This is why you are seeing younger people picking up classics and saying they are unrelatable. There aren't a lot of surface similarities between a 21 year old girl in California living in 2024 and Jane Eyre. But if you dig deeper it's easy to find them.

I have very often seen a critique of a book being "this wasn't relatable to me" or "I couldn't self insert" as if those are things that you should be able to do with most stories. I think that so long as books are written by people then there will be something relatable on the page, a character may be very different but there will be something about their circumstance or emotional journey that resonates with some. I would also add that it is often a deliberate literary choice to create some characters that are very hard to relate to, repulsive villains etc. This is supposed to challenge a reader.

I think that romance as a genre has a lot more to offer than simply being thinly veiled self insert escapism. To me well written romance is a romance that really relies on unique traits of the people falling in love. If a romance is bland enough that it can easily serve as self insert than it has become something else. And again, self insert and x reader stories do have their place, but I have an issue when this becomes the expectation for the genre as a whole.

Is relatability king?

No. I think that expecting stories to always be easily relatable is not a healthy way to approach reading and story telling. It's very narrow minded, and can stray into some dicey territories. I saw a video of one girl who explained she couldn't relate to the main character of a novel because that main character was black. Firstly, this is racist. Secondly, I think it shows just how narrow the window of expected relatiability really is. Some readers need that MC to be just like them to be able to relate at all. I think that if a character is well written and has motivations then they can be relatable in some way, they don't even have to be human characters to achieve this (Red Wall, Watership Down for some examples).

Then there is the implication that if something isn't relatable that it's bad story telling. When if you are finding something unrelatable interrogate why that might be. Is the author making a narrative choice? What is the deeper meaning there? Actually engage with the text instead of stepping away the moment it starts to challenge you.

Back to the RPF of it all

Now why RPF specifically? Because a lot of this can apply to any ship. I think this is more pronounced in RPF because the idea is "that guy is hot, you are writing RPF because you want to have sex with him" (I write sports RPF about race car drivers they are dudes, but insert whichever pronouns are applicable to your case)

Which this isn't the reason some people are writing ship RPF at all. I'm sure there are some. But once again, my main interest in the ship that I write for comes from the chemistry I see between those two guys. I want to see what happens if you put that dynamic in with an alternate universe, a few fucked up tags, and shake well and see what comes out. I often write about people I have no physical attraction to whatsoever.

I think that the above idea is linked to what I discussed earlier about assuming that romance is always an exercise in self insert, which assumes some need for attraction to the love interest. When this is simply not the case.

I think this idea that ship content exists as a step removed from x reader misunderstands the purpose of a lot of story telling, and underestimates an author's motivations, and the reasons people may want to read and write RPF ship stories.

This is once again especially common with RPF about people who are alive and active on the internet today (Kpop, sports, youtubers etc) But I think if you dig into what makes people passionate about a specific ship you will find a lot more depth than you are expecting.

Anyway those are just some thoughts I had on this topic that's been rattling around my brain for a few months,

Philip Goodwin Freelon (March 25, 1952 - July 9, 2019) is an architect known for his design of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History & Culture. He was born in Philadelphia to Allan R. Freelon, Jr. and Elizabeth N. Freelon. He graduated from North Carolina State University’s College of Design and earned an MS in architecture at MIT.

He received the Loeb Fellowship to study independently for a year at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He founded The Freelon Group, which grew to 65 staff members. The firm’s notable designs included the Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise Facility at North Carolina Central University; the North Carolina A&T State University Proctor School of Education; Anacostia Library and the Tenley-Friendship Library; and the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture to name a few.

The Freelon Group merged with Perkins+Will. He became Design Director of the North Carolina practice, leading both the Perkins+Will offices in Durham and Charlotte His team designed the four-level Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History & Culture on the Mall. He partnered with two other architects, the late J. Max Bond and Ghanaian-born David Adjaye.

President Barack Obama appointed him to the National Commission of Fine Arts. He became a recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture and the AIA North Carolina’s Gold Medal. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from North Carolina State University. He was a visiting and adjunct professor at several leading universities. Notes:

A smallish class. Kayla chose this evening to throw a Girls Party to enhance her business, and therefore kill our business. No problem. We still managed to scrape together some crackers and cheese, a lot of fresh raw veggies with dips, and nuts and cookies. There as enough wine to allow Herb and Tim to tote leftovers home.

Some one suggested that it was time to remove President Obama's artistic portrait from its' place of honor in our Barn. I had left it up, thinking it was still possible that Barack could someday become the First Husband. Someone with inside info said they were getting a divorce. I don't believe that rumor because I think he would stick with Michelle even if that's what it took to get back in the Whitehouse.

Anyone who is entertaining the hope of transferring their Lifetime Free LHCF Membership over to the soon to be completed Taj Mahal at 6224 better be making alternative plans. It appears that the current Shah of the Taj Mahal is only going to train with the most ELITE athletes, and no women need apply. I'm guessing that Shane and Warren G will make the cut. Tim and Ed might be admitted but only for their janitorial and organizational skills. Definitely none of our old farts will be tolerated. Maybe Armando could keep the pool clean.
