what are things that people misconcept about hunting? what facts out there are true and which are bogus?

Oh boy, this is gonna be a long one XD

Ok, so let’s start with the biggest, most insufferable myth I have personally had to deal with:

Myth: All hunters are blood-thirsty animal murderers who take delight in killing poor innocent animals and all of them are awful people.

No.

Just . . .

Just no.

(I’m only slightly bitter, can’t you tell)

People who perpetuate this myth are the type of people who get all their knowledge about hunting from watching Bambi and from reading news articles about awful hunters (because you will never find a news article about all the good hunters out there, trust me) And it’s just not true.  While, yes, at the heart of the matter, hunting is killing an animal, but people don’t hunt because we like killing things.  It’s actually a very sober, solemn moment when you take an animal’s life, and I even get a little bit choked up about it. 

It’s a deeply personal matter.  It’s about the challenge, it’s about getting out there in nature and appreciating it.  It’s difficult for me to put into words, but hunters love animals, and we love nature, and hunting is how we preserve nature and foster healthy animal populations. And this makes sense if you’ve taken a science class beyond second grade.  Population control is crucial for healthy animals.  And hunting is essential for conservation.

Want to know some rough numbers?   Check out the numbers here.  Hunters give a lot of money towards conservation.  $796 million towards license and fees, $440 million through donations, $8 billion through taxes, $1.6 billion for conservation programs. It’s huge!  And hunters would not be spending this much money if they weren’t just as passionate and serious as I am.  Many hunters have a strong code of ethics and morals and will do everything they can to ensure they harvest an animal in the most humane way possible. I’ve known people who pass on monster bucks because they couldn’t make the clean shot.  I know people who refuse to shoot yearlings.  I know people who missed out on entire seasons because their form wasn’t up to spec and they physically couldn’t shoot a bow.

Hunters are not monsters. Hunters are the most devoted conservationists you will ever meet.  They do so much for wildlife that it’s hard to overstate.

Ok, with that rant out of the way, let’s move on to some myths that are more focused on hunting in general.

(I had to look up some common myths because I legitimately don’t know that many XD)

Myth: The draw weight of your bow is the most important factor in shooting.

I don’t think any serious archery hunter believes this, but I know some people put more emphasis on their draw weight than they should.  Recommended minimum is 40 lbs, but some people will try to max out their draw weight right as the season starts.  You should never do this.  Shoot at a draw weight you are comfortable at.  If you need to dial it down, then dial it down, and then work yourself up to it. Accuracy should be above all else. It doesn’t matter if you’re pulling 100 lbs, it doesn’t matter how sharp or big your broadheads are.  If you can’t hit the deer in the vitals, you’re not going to harvest your deer.  And even if it does die, it will die slowly, which no one wants.

The Dry Doe Myth (AKA you should shoot older does because they’re not producing fawns any more)

Does will carry fawns as long as they physically can, and if a doe does not produce fawns, that means she’s dying.  Deer in captivity can live upwards of 20 years, and those old does will have twins and triplets every year until their dying days.  To put it into perspective, a wild deer is considered at peak maturity at four years old.  If you see a “dry” doe, that probably means she lost her fawn very early in the year, or maybe she just didn’t have a fawn that year.  That does not mean she won’t have any more in the future.  Additionally, older does make better mothers.  

Myth: Bucks will bed (aka rest/sleep) downwind of does and fawns.

This one isn’t realistic and doesn’t make sense.  This myth means bedding areas are always moving according to the wind direction, and that just doesn’t happen.  But what is more likely to be true is if you have a steady food source, like a field, there will be a doe bedding area 50-100 yards away, and bucks will bed a little ways behind them.

Myth: Scent control is your key to a successful hunt.

Well, this is slightly embarrassing because just two posts ago I was talking about all the different scent killers you can use to help eliminate your scent.  Turns out they’re just placebos and do jack diddly shit.

Go figure.

But I was right about one thing!  You have to always make sure you’re downwind of your deer.  Walking in will not leave a trail if you’re careful, and as long as you don’t use any strongly scented soaps or shampoos, the deer won’t smell you if you stay mindful of the wind.  Just this evening I picked a perfect spot with my back up against a river, ensuring that the deer will always be in front of me and the wind will be a non-factor. The biggest thing that can give away your scent is, surprisingly, your breath.  So try to breathe through your nose as much as possible, or even better, wear a face cover over your mouth and nose to help catch the scent of your breath.

Myth: Don’t pee in the woods, the smell will spook the deer.

Uh, an odd one for sure, but let me remind you, hunters are in the woods from before sunrise til after the sun sets.  Sometimes you just gotta go XD

A lot of hunters worry about the strong smell of their urine scaring away deer.  But the strong ammonia scent in your urine will evaporate/disperse after a few minutes.  So as long as you’re not peeing all over the place, finding a nice little spot away from the trails, you’re fine.

Are There Any Drawbacks?

Not really. Some customers complained that mechanical broadheads won’t fit as tightly in the foam insert as fixed broadheads.

You would have to push them further down into the foam. The holes for holding the arrowheads are standard size foam holes.

The clearance between the foam insert and the top of the box is about 1 1/2 inches.

Choices for Development

These two were my choices to develop.

Why did I choose both of these pieces? I believe they have good room for improvements, on both aesthetic and technic. Since I’m only focusing on character animation & performance, all the models will be outsourced from free fonts licenced for personal and portfolio showcase.

 How to further develop each one of the animations? Starting with the first one, at the time, I lost a lot of this piece of work, and this was already a more advanced version than the one I was able to show in class. What I truly wanted, was to turn this piece into something more realistic! I was thinking of using characters and environments from the unreal marketplace, where I can just work with them and worry about the animation itself. So far been having some complications with the character rig I piked (Model: Sparrow; the transition from unreal to Maya breaks them rig most of the time), so I’m still studying the best solution to still work with that method, if it turns out impossible at the end, I'll just use this same model (Model: Bonnie), in terms of rigging its really good, just have to understand what happened with the alpha on the eyes, but easily solved.

The second pice, fighting scenes are great for great moving and ambitious camera plans! That’s exactly the point I want to make with this piece, using inspiration from Japanese manga, and some sequences of Teenage Ninja Turtles series, I would like to understand which is the best technic to make it look good and feel the emotion of the moment. I would like to develop the relationship between the two, so it looks more master\student, and the whole point of the video turns more of a lesson for both. Another thing I want to do with this piece is to explore the quick\slow movements, where I make quick movements and then use slow motion to hold the moment, this would imply more suspense and hold the audience attached to uncovering the result.

Archer’s Edge: Hunting Camp

Hunting camp can be as critical to the success of your hunt as a bullet or an arrow.  Minor inconveniences can be overcome but major obstacles can dampen, or even end, your hunting trip.   If hunting with others the obstacles can be magnified and escalate quickly.  There are many different types of camp along with various needs based on the time of year, terrain, and whether it is a do-it-yourself hunt or that with an outfitter.

If hunting with an outfitter it is crucial to ask for a detailed list of what is provided as well as information on additional recommended items.  Understanding the totality of the hunt will help determine your necessary items.  Various lists are available depending on the type of camp and hunt.  Please read after the article for a sample list.

It is suggested to pack no more than 200 pounds per hunter so understanding the needs of your trip, and your hunting party, will help to ensure you pack enough but not too much.  A good quality backpack and some practice hikes will better your packing-in experience.  Scouting locations with aerial images, terrain or topographical maps and fellow hunter knowledge can help assist in finding the right place to set-up camp. Being close to a water supply is great but being too close can also increase the risk of flooding near camp. Seek out a flat rise about 200 yards from the water source.  This will help keep mosquitos down during the summer months as well as avoid the colder air that settles in the depressions during the fall and winter.

When choosing a tent site keep in mind the levelness of the ground.  No one wants to roll out of bed in the morning. Having a slightly higher point for your camp can help keep it dryer if weather does comes in.  Clear the ground with a pine branch to remove rocks and clumps that might become tripping hazards inside your tent.  Keep in mind the direction of the sun to position the tent so that the dawning light warms it in the morning.  No matter the spot be sure to look up for widow makers or dead branches.  Clear these if possible or select a different camping site.

A wall tent is the best approach for hunting camp.  Having two wall tents is even better.  This will allow you to separate cooking and sleeping areas.  Odors linger in the fabrics of the tent and sleeping bags and will attract unwanted visitors.  Hang food off the ground and burn any paper products or left over food to prevent enduring odors.

It is ideal to have everything off the ground inside the tents.  You can accomplish this by using hooks and hangers designed for wall tents or creating a mini tripod with logs to hang items from.  Keep your bows and guns off of the ground to prevent a broadhead in the toe or damage to your equipment.  If you are able to carry in a cot with your 200 pound recommended max it will benefit you for the entire hunt.  A good night’s sleep is crucial to feeling invigorated and ready to take on the day.  Pulling pinecones and rocks from under your sleeping bag can stifle your sleep patterns. A cot also allows you to stay off the cold ground and better regulate your temperature.

A floor is not required in a wall tent but it can increase comfort.  The floor should not cover the entire area as you need clearance and space for the stove and firewood as well as a recommended mud area when entering the tent.  This will allow a space for you to take off any soiled clothing or boots and not get the flooring wet and dirty.  If using guy lines to stake your tent or create space to hang items outside it is best to find reflective, glow-in-the-dark or neon rope.  Tripping over a line can be comical to watch but imagine doing so with an armload of firewood or a loaded gun.  The nature of hunting is that you will most likely not be living in camp during day light hours so it is important to pay attention to the hazards in camp upon set-up.   Taking the time to structure camp upon arrival can make it easier to keep clean and organized for the duration of the hunt.

Let’s face it – some of us hunt to enjoy the social aspect of the evenings around a campfire swapping tales of our hunting dreams and disasters.  Keep the positive atmosphere throughout your hunting trip with some expectations for those in camp.  Take turns with camp chores.  Pick a night for each member to cook dinner, wash dishes, haul firewood and keep the stove/fire fed at night.  Everyone will be happy and all needs will be met.

There are staples that most hunters will agree on for refreshments in camp; Jerky from last year’s hunt, eggs and bacon as well as stew or chili for sustained nutrition. Do you remember your mother telling you that breakfast was the most important meal of the day?  This couldn’t be truer at hunting camp.  Prepare for a day in the field with a full meal in the morning.  If you fill yourself, not gorge, on breakfast you should be satisfied until about 2pm. Jerky, peanut butter and an energy bar are great stand foods that are high in caloric values and can hold you over until dinner.  If you have a successful hunt, cut the backstraps and grill to enjoy the spoils of the hunt.

After field dressing and quartering your kill don’t hang your meat near camp.  Build a scaffold for meat storage or hang from a cross-beam between trees.  Have them 100-200 yards away so that they are still within view but distant enough to keep space between you and any critters that might attempt a late night snack. You can take a log, about 2 inches diameter, and place between two trees – latching it to the trees with rope or twine. If there are not trees accessible to use take 7 logs about 7-8 feet long and make two tripods, or teepees.  Place them about 6 feet apart and place the seventh log over the top in order to hang your meat.  Take a tarp and place it over like a tent to keep the meat out of the direct sun or rain.

Enjoy the sense of history and tradition that comes along with a hunting camp experience and always protect our legacy as hunters;  clean up your camp and leave it as you found it.  Leave a good impression for the next person who might stumble upon this hallowed ground.
