Are the ArchieSonic comics actually an 80's/90's syndicated cartoon?
Welcome back to my look at the ArchieSonic comic series, and how it shared a lot of the same story tropes as a typical ‘80’s or ‘90’s syndicated cartoon! We've got a long one today, which isn't surprising considering the topic of the day:
Episode 15: Robot duplicate
I mean, well duh. This is a Sonic the Hedgehog comic, of course there’s going to be robot duplicates! Shall we take it from the top?
Tumblr media
Our first instance of a robot double was Pseudo Sonic, who was introduced in Sonic #9’s story of the same name. Robotnik tasked him with finding Knothole, which he did when Antoine mistook him for Sonic and accidentally led him right into the secret base.
Tumblr media
Pseudo Sonic wasn’t that much of a threat though, and was almost immediately destroyed by Tails! Nice going, kiddo!
Tumblr media
An interesting factoid about Pseudo Sonic - he was first seen in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, where he turned out not to be a sentient robot but actually a piloted mech.
Tumblr media
So yeah, Pseudo Sonic definitely deserves a shoutout for actually being in a syndicated cartoon as well as ArchieSonic!
Next up we have…
Tumblr media
Wait, Princess Sally? Well, not quite. ArchieSonic had a few mini-series in the ‘90’s, and Princess Sally was the first character to be focused on. Except surprise! It wasn’t Princess Sally at all!
Tumblr media
The real Sally spent the majority of the first two issues of her three issue story in stasis while she was being impersonated by a robotic doppleganger called an auto-automaton.
Tumblr media
Robotnik had intended to make duplicates of all the Freedom Fighters, but Sally blew up the factory with help from the trainees she was mentoring and Geoffrey St. John. And yet the robo fakers kept on coming back for more. One of them I’ve already discussed in an earlier post:
Tumblr media
Yup, Fiona was an auto-automaton too. But the one that probably did the most damage was an auto-automaton of Sally’s father, King Maximillian Acorn.
Tumblr media
He was able to infiltrate Knothole, have Sonic framed for murdering Princess Sally, sentenced him to life imprisonment in the Devil’s Gulag, and then welcomed Robotnik into Knothole with open arms.
But we all know who the real star of the robot duplicate category is, and he was first introduced in the Sonic CD adaptation in Sonic’s first milestone issue, Sonic #25.
Tumblr media
Incorrectly named “Mecha Sonic” in this issue, Metal Sonic was programmed to race Sonic through the Stardust Speedway and lure him into a trap.
Tumblr media
Fortunately for Sonic, Metal couldn’t keep up with him and melted his legs off trying. And Sally stopped Robotnik from springing his trap at the last second, although Sonic claimed he saw it coming a mile away anyway.
Tumblr media
This Metal Sonic was later repaired and came back for the Knuckles’ Chaotix adaptation, and we’ve already discussed how that one worked out.
Tumblr media
However that encounter left Metal Sonic exposed to a power gem (really creative name there, Kenny P.) and in time he was able to reconstruct himself. He decided to settle the score with Sonic first and managed to lure Sonic and Tails into a trap in Sonic #85 by sabotaging their shuttle to crash on its way back to Knothole from Station Square following the Sonic Adventure adaptation. This led into the story, “Heart of the Hedgehog,” which ran in issues #86 - #87.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Metal Sonic kidnapped Tails, strapped him up above a volcano he’d hotwired to erupt, and challenged Sonic to try and rescue him before he was barbecued. With Metal Sonic empowered by the power gem (seriously, is that really the best name they could come up with?), Sonic found himself outmatched by this new and improved model of Metal Sonic. But he realised that the power gem had also given Metal Sonic true free will (the way it had to Heavy and Bomb in the Knuckles’ Chaotix adaptation), and he and Tails were able to use this to convince Metal Sonic that there was more to life than revenge and murder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a surprising turn of events this Metal Sonic sacrificed itself to save Sonic and Tails from the volcano, echoing his demise in the OVA movie. This time Metal was damaged far beyond his own self-repair capabilities. However he was restored much, much later by Uncle Chuck in Sonic #238, reintroduced as “Shard the Metal Sonic.”
Tumblr media
Having been shown the value of friendship and teamwork and given a second chance at life, Shard happily served as a member of King Elias’ Secret Freedom Fighters, attempting to undermine the rule of Elias’ deposer, Ixis Naugus.
After the incident at the volcano, Eggman waited a surprisingly long time to make a new Metal Sonic - we wouldn’t see him again until Sonic #146.
Tumblr media
Metal Sonic became something of a butt-monkey at this point, usually being destroyed soon after he was reintroduced. By Team Sonic...
Tumblr media
By the Suppression Squad…
Tumblr media
By Marine the Raccoon (quite possibly the most embarrasing of all his demises)…
Tumblr media
By an exploding roboticiser...
Tumblr media
By himself after Eggman ordered him to self-destruct on Antoine…
Tumblr media
And then finally he was dispatched by his own predecessor, Shard.
Tumblr media
That particular defeat inspired Eggman though, who gave his next Metal Sonic a power gem core of its own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This Metal Sonic was then sent to destroy Shard, resulting in an epic fight that Metal only managed to win by transmitting his data into a new body and blowing himself up again. Shard was left in a near-death state, but unfortunately we never found out if he would have survived or not because the series was rebooted right after that issue and Shard was wiped from existence.
Tumblr media
Following the reboot Metal Sonic became a single entity - we would no longer see him get destroyed and a new one be created, instead it would just be the same robot coming back every time.
Tumblr media
Over the years of ArchieSonic comics there were a variety of other robotic Sonics we saw. There were various incarnations of Silver Sonic or Metal Sonic Kai, and we even got Captain Metal after the reboot, which was the Metal Sonic that Marine dispatched, now transformed into a pirate. Oh, and the Tails doll deserves shoutout too, of course.
Tumblr media
But Metal Sonic was the one that always came back for more, determined to destroy his “inferior copy.”
Whew, that was a lot of talking about robot doubles. I'm beat. And tomorrow's installment will be another long one, as we talk about multi-episode McGuffins chases. See you then!

Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain: Fol. 169v, St. John the Baptist Preaching, Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximillian, c. 1500, Cleveland Museum of Art: Medieval Art
This manuscript was illuminated by a circle of at least five highly organized manuscript painters active in the Flemish cities of Ghent and Bruges. The principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, who painted the majority of the book's miniatures. Manuscripts produced by this circle of artists are renowned for the decoration of their borders, which typically feature a rich variety of realistically-painted flowers, birds, and butterflies. This prayer book, called a book of hours, was intended not for a cleric, but for the private devotions of a lay person-in this case, Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451-1504). Isabella's coat of arms embellishes the book's frontispiece. It is unlikely that the book was commissioned by the Queen herself; rather, she probably received it as a diplomatic gift from someone courting her patronage, perhaps Cardinal Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros. A Franciscan friar, Jimenez was dependent upon Isabella for his advancement, first to the post of Queen's confessor in 1492, and then to Archbishop of Toledo in 1495. Size: Codex: 22.5 x 15.2 cm (8 7/8 x 6 in.) Medium: ink, tempera, and gold on vellum

“As I come to this supreme moment of my life, I am sure none of you would suppose I want to deceive you. And so I tell you plainly: there is no way to be saved except the Christian way. My religion teaches me to pardon my enemies and all who have offended me. I do gladly pardon the Emperor and all who have sought my death. I beg them to seek baptism and be Christians themselves.”
—Paul Miki
[Takayama de Manila — John Andrew Sustaita]
• Saint Paul Miki was born in Tounucumada, Japan around 1562 to a wealthy family. His father was a military leader. Paul received a Jesuit education. After he completed school in 1580, he became a Jesuit seminarian. He was a well-known, eloquent and successful preacher... Around that time, a powerful Japanese feudal ruler, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, began a persecution of Catholics because he felt threatened by the Jesuit’s influence... • John Andrew Sustaita — “The Art Guy” – from Grapevine, Texas, is not yet a Michaelangelo – but, for devotees of Blessed Justo Takayama — close! He creates artwork for subjects such as our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Maximillian Kolbe, St. Patrick, St. Pope John Paul II, St. Charbel and the Children of Fatima, Sustaita wanted to paint a portrait of Blessed Takayama, but did not know how to tackle his subject. Sustaita proceeded to Japan for an immersion trip to learn and appreciate the culture of the samurai, and the singular relevance of Ukon Takayama who is a venerated exponent of the Martyr Church of Japan. Quote/s of the Day – 14 September – Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
“In the Cross is salvation; in the Cross is life; in the Cross is protection against our enemies; in the Cross is infusion of heavenly sweetness; in the Cross is strength of mind; in the Cross is joy of spirit; in the Cross is excellence of virtue; in the Cross is perfection of holiness. There is no salvation of soul, nor hope of eternal life, save in the Cross.”
Thomas à Kempis (1380-1471) The Inner Life
Tumblr media
“The road is narrow. He who wishes to travel it more easily must cast off all things and use the cross as his cane. In other words, he must be truly resolved to suffer willingly for the love of God in all things.”
St John of the Cross (1542-1591) Doctor of the Church
Tumblr media
The everlasting God has in His wisdom foreseen from eternity the cross He now presents to you as a gift from His inmost heart. The cross He now sends you He has considered with His all-knowing eyes, understood with His divine mind, tested with His wise justice, warmed with loving arms and weighed with His own hands to see that it is not one inch too large nor one ounce too heavy for you. He has blessed it with His holy name, anointed it with His grace, perfumed it with His consolation, taken one last glance at you and your courage and then sent it to you from heaven, a special greeting from God to you, an alms of the all-merciful love of God.
St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Church
Tumblr media
Camillus wanted to have on his habit the Sign of the Cross in order ‘to demonstrate that this is a religion of the Cross… so that those who want to follow our way of life will get ready… to follow Jesus Christ unto death’. He wanted it to be dark red ‘because more like the true wood of the most holy Cross on which the Redeemer of the World died and was appended’.
St Camillus de Lellis (1550-1614)
Tumblr media
“Oh cherished cross! Through thee my most bitter trials are replete with graces!”
St Paul of the Cross (1694-1775
Tumblr media
“Everything is a reminder of the Cross. We ourselves are made in the shape of a cross.”
St John Vianney (1786-1859)
Tumblr media
“Let us not forget, that Jesus not only suffered but also rose in glory; so, too, we go to the glory of the Resurrection, by way of suffering and the Cross.”
St Maximillian Kolbe (1894 -1941)
Tumblr media
“There is line from the illuminator of the St John’s Bible that states: “We have to love our way out of this.” There is nothing wimpy or namby-pamby or blind about this conviction. When we love extravagantly, we are not purposely blinding ourselves to moral realities— just the contrary.
Love is not a sentiment, but “a harsh and dreadful thing,” as Dostoevsky said.
This is just what Jesus shows on His terrible cross. And this is just what we, His followers, must imitate. Taking up the cross means, not just being willing to suffer but being willing to suffer as He did, absorbing violence and hatred through our forgiveness and nonviolence.”
Bishop Robert Barron

July 21, Memorial of St. Lawrence of Brindinsi, priest of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin; Ecclesiae Doctoris (Doctor of the Church).
Caesare de Rossi was born at Brindisi, kingdom of Naples, on July 22nd. He was educated by the Conventual Franciscans there and by his uncle at St. Mark's in Venice. When sixteen, he joined the Capuchin Friars at Verona, taking the name Lawrence. He pursued his higher studies in theology, philosophy, the bible, Greek, Hebrew, and several other languages at the University of Padua. He was ordained and began to preach with great effect in Northern Italy. He became definitor general of his Order in Rome in 1596, a position he was to hold five times, was assigned to conversion work with Jews, and was sent to Germany, with Blessed Benedict of Urbino, to combat Lutheranism. They founded friaries at Prague, Vienna, and Gorizia, which were to develop into the provinces of Bohemia, Austria, and Styria. At the request of Emperor Rudolf II, Lawrence helped raise an army among the German rulers to fight against the Turks, who were threatening to conquer all of Hungary, became its chaplain, and was among the leaders in the Battle of Szekesfehevar in 1601; many attributed the ensuing victory to him. In 1602, he was elected Vicar General of the Capuchins but refused re-election in 1605. He was sent to Spain by the emperor to persuade Philip III to join the Catholic League, and while there, founded a Capuchin house in Madrid. He was then sent as papal nuncio to the court of Maximillian of Bavaria, served as peacemaker in several royal disputes, and in 1618, retired from worldly affairs to the friary at Caserta. He was recalled at the request of the rulers of Naples to go to Spain to intercede with King Philip for them against the Duke of Osuna, Spanish envoy to naples and convinced the King to recall the Duke to avert an uprising. The trip in the sweltering heat of summer exhausted him, and he died a few days after his meeting with the King at Lisbon on July 22nd. Lawrence wrote a commentary on Genesis and several treatises against Luther, but Lawrence's main writings are in the nine volumes of his sermons. He was canonized in 1881 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope John XXIII, s secular Franciscan pope, in 1959.
