Hello all! The mod team would like to formally announce that we will be hosting the Malevolent Big Bang again this year, 2025! We're excited to see what everyone creates this year, both new faces and old 💜

Here are the dates you should mark down if you are interested in participating in this event as a writer, beta, artist, or pinch hitter!

Writer signups open on May 1

Beta signups open on May 1

Artist signups open on July 14

Pinch hitter signups open on July 14

Keep an eye on this space as we get closer to those dates for more information, and make sure to check our FAQ and rules to see if this event would work for you! Note for returning members that there have been a few changes to our rules this year, including minimum word count for writers and clarifying expectations for artists, so please make sure to read them over.

We are excited to announce that Writer and Beta signups are open for the Malevolent Big Bang 2025! 

Before filling out the signup form below, please review our rules, FAQ, and schedule to ensure that you are able to meet the event requirements. (This is an 18+ event where writers are asked to complete the first draft of a fanfiction at least 5,000 words long over a two-month period.) If you have any additional questions, send us an ask!

The writer signup form will remain open until 11:59 PM EST May 11th. The beta signup form will remain open until 11:59 PM EST July 27th.

If you are interested in participating as both a writer and a beta reader, please fill out both forms.

Once you submit your signup form, you will be sent an email with an invitation to the event Discord server within 24 hours. If you are already in the event Discord, you will still receive this email, but you do not have to leave and rejoin the server – simply reintroduce yourself in the intros channel after you have submitted your signup form. We ask that all participants join the server for the duration of the event, though we will be sending out all important event information via email as well as via the Discord server. If you do not receive an email, please send us an ask or email malevolentbigbang@gmail.com.

Welcome to the Malevolent Big Bang! This is a large-scale 18+ Malevolent fandom event in which writers, artists, and betas collaborate over a period of several months to produce a “big bang” of fan content at the deadline. The schedule for this event is below!

Is there a plan to do a 2025 Big Bang?

Hello! Yes, we plan to run the Big Bang again this year. We'll have more specific information for you all about the schedule and rules for this year in March/April, but the timeline will be roughly similar to previous years, so you can expect writer and beta signups to be in/around May and artist and pinch hitter signups to be in/around July. We look forward to the third year of this event!

Hi, i want to ask if its ok to participate with a collection of short stories with a single common setting/timeline? While also paying attention to word limit? Something like quick fic?

Hello! A collection of short stories would be allowed as long as each story is directly connected to the others, there is a narrative throughline, and all short stories serve to tell a single cohesive overarching story (think episodes of a television show or individual scenes in a novel). As a note, for final posting, you will be asked to post your entire fic on one day, so all fics would need to be posted on the same day, either as individual chapters of a single fic or as separate fics within a series.

Hey!

I'm thinking of joining as a writer again, and I'm wondering how physical artforms are usually handled? In terms of shipping the art, mostly, as I am not from the US nor do I have experience with inter-continental shipping like that. I'm from Europe and some artists might be also, but I don't think most will.

I couldn't find anything about this in the FAQ but I might have simply missed it

Hey! If you choose to accept artists who may work with physical artforms (and you can also choose not to!) and if they choose to ship their artworks to you after the event has concluded (physical artists are also not required to ship their writers their artworks; the minimum requirement for the event is for physical artists to send/post photographs of their completed artworks), shipping would primarily be negotiated between the writer and the artist, with the option for mod(s) to offer mediation or assistance if required. Specifically with regards to international shipping, a physical artist may or may not elect to ship their writer their final artwork based on factors like shipping cost, shipping restrictions, or current customs/tariffs in place--it's up to the artist and the writer to work out those details. If you have any specific questions about shipping or international shipping, please let us know and we'll do our best to answer them!
