Okay, I know I reposted this already, but it makes me want to tell this story! For context, I'm Canadian and live in Ontario.

Story time!!!

So growing up, my dad was really into politics. As a child, I met Joe Clark and Flora McDolnald, and worked on several political campaigns at varying levels. At one point in the 90s, we had an NDP government under Premier Bob Rae, and my family had worked on the campaign of our local winning MP (NDP). The election for their re-election came around my 18th birthday, so we were all really excited because I would be voting for the first time!

So before an election, there is an official caucus meeting to establish the candidate running - even if there's an incumbent and nobody wants to unseat them, it's a formality - and of course an excuse for a nice little banquet for all caucus members. Our MP asked me if I would like to officially second their nomination and write a small speech for it. I was honoured, and though it made me nervous, I knew I could do it. She especially wanted me to do the speech because I'm bilingual (French/English) and she wanted my speech to be as well.

So the night of the caucus meeting comes and it's even bigger news because the Premier is in town and giving a speech at our meeting! I get there early with my family to help get things ready, and I have my little speech in my pocket, ready to read. And one of the organizers comes to us in a panic. The MC for the event, it turns out, was unilingual - only spoke English - which wasn't a big deal at first, but was suddenly a big deal now that the Premier was going to be there (for those who don't know, French/English bilingualism is a huge deal in Ontario). The MC's intro and thanks to the Premier was only going to be in English - which would be a HUGE no-no.

Guess who was asked to write out a quick French thank you speech less than half an hour before the Premier's arrival on top of the speech I was already to give later in the event? And expected to give it too?

So the Premier arrives with fanfare and is introduced, then gives his speech - and the whole time, I'm sitting in the wings, too nervous about my little speech to the Premier of the fucking province to even hear what he was saying. When he finishes, the MC gives her english thank you, then waves me over to give my french one. Thankfully I didn't stumble badly, and the Premier shook my hand afterward.

It turned out well... but I've never been so nervous in my life. Seriously, I was trembling. Though after that, my later, longer speech seconding the candidate's nomination was a breeze!

like and even in animation its less about it being some kinda malitious trend and more about everyone catching the Hazbro sicknes and deisgning characters as toys first and characters second, low prod. cost and eyecatching enough to even attempt to pull kids off cocomelon. its about making the easiest to mold in plastic, least offensive to white supremacists, most appealing to a raising number of kids who have worsening phsyical skill and attention, easiest to animate without effort designs- not about looking good or unique.

does it suck big time? sure, i feel that way too!

is it like, an active malitious thing? no... not really! the choices are actively made but not done so out of cartoon evil, just... lazyness.

i do agree with the trend in reboots and shit where the faces become the same the eyes huger and glitterye and the hair straighter and clothing shitter ETC but i really cant agree when people are like "toys too! after 2010 it went to shit and theres no cute softer lower key stuffies anymore!" and show a pic of a stuffed animal from 2005 as the bad example. im sorry but brightly lisa franlie plastic sparkleeye stuffed animals and dolls arent... like new starting at like 2015 like so many people insist, you just started noticing them more. and i pick up natural colored, bean bodied, not glittery stuffies all the time?? i see them all the time? also like bro im sorry you are no longer the target audiance, if thats what kids thee days find cool (you did too back then. flashback to all the times you begged for that beanie boo or lisa frank purple dog...) thats what stores will stock!! fashion dolls arent new, neither are their glittery clothes!!! you mean to tell me rainbow high is just 100% out of left field with bratz and the entire barbie legacy behind them? every 10 years theres a new brightly colored line of fashion dolls and plasticc eye stuffies. this has been happening for decades now, youre just boring and old enough to find them tacky now.
