It was just a normal night in with Bucky, you had your laptop on your lap as you sat on the couch, your back leaning against the armrest and your legs stretched out over the cushions, feet on Bucky’s lap. He was sitting on the other end of the couch, a book in his hands as he read. You enjoyed nights like this with him there were no expectations, you didn’t even have to talk but if you wanted to you knew he would listen. He was wearing just jeans and a t-shirt and you were in sweatpants and one of his t-shirts, but there was one addition.
It was a necklace that you had seen online a few weeks ago and it finally came in. You had wanted something similar for a while, but this was one that you really liked. It wasn’t fancy, it could go with anything. It was a thin, black, braided rope necklace, half a centimeter in diameter. And from it hung a simple silver pendant in the shape of the letter J.
You knew that Bucky always noticed the little things about you, every inch you cut off your hair, if you got a new top, if you were feeling down, he was rather perceptive. So you knew he would have seen it the minute he walked in the door if it hadn’t been hidden under your shirt. As you worked you causally looped a finger under the necklace and fiddled with it until it was sitting on top of the shirt.
Bucky noticed the movement out of the corner of his eye and glanced over at you. Immediately his eyes went to the silver pendant hanging from the necklace and his jaw tightened a bit. “Who’s J?” He asked, a slight sourness in his tone.
You had seen Bucky get like this a little bit, you knew it was something that he was trying to work on, but he got jealous sometimes. And apparently now was one of those times. Even though he had no reason to be, seeing as the J was for James. “What do you mean?” You asked, playing innocent as you looked over at him.
“J. On your necklace.” He said, marking the page in his book by slipping in a bookmark and then turning to face you properly, the book being set down on the coffee table.
“Yeah,” you agreed, picking up the pendant and twirling it between your fingers as you looked down at it. “What about it?”
Bucky sucked in a breath and looked around as if there was something that could help him explain. His arms crossed over his chest, his vibranium arm catching the light beautifully. “Unless J stands for Jesus I have someone’s ass to kick.” He said, annoyance and jealousy slipping into his tone.
You couldn’t help but laugh, which just earned a confused and almost hurt look from Bucky. You closed your laptop and set it on the coffee table as well, then shifted your position so that you were sitting right in front of him. “Did you ever stop to consider that J stood for James?” You asked playfully.
He paused and softened, his shoulders relaxing and his jaw untensing. His arms moved, one coming around your shoulders and the other awkwardly scratching the back of his neck. “Oh.” He said sheepishly. “In that case… nice necklace, plum.”
You rolled your eyes and smiled fondly, leaning into his embrace. Your work and his book were both sitting forgotten on the coffee table. “I love you too, James.”

Some of the things you loved doing with Natasha were the things she wasn’t the best at or the most knowledgeable in. There was no doubting the fact that Natasha was a very intelligent and impressive woman; well versed in politics, history, culture, the arts. But there was something that one couldn’t replace with readings: a childhood.
You could remember when Natasha confided in you about her past, and you remembered feeling ridiculous because even though you were crying, she wasn’t. And it was her story, her life. Though, you supposed that just meant she had more experience dealing with it.
Still, from that day forward, you had made a silent promise to yourself that you would teach her how to enjoy some of the more childish things. And there was no better time for that than Halloween. Of course, Halloween could be a mature Holiday, the Starks always threw a massive party, and there was drinking, and dancing, and everything you would expect from a party thrown by Tony Stark, but you wanted to show Natasha the things you had done as a kid on Halloween.
You had the whole day planned out. You had started with pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin shaped pancakes for breakfast, you had even put chocolate chips in the shape of the eyes and mouth for a jack-o-lantern. Then you sat down to watch Halloween movies. When you told Natasha that she had originally thought you meant Horror movies, imagine her surprise when you put on Ghostbusters and Scooby-Doo instead of American Psycho.
You had finished your movie marathon and you had two pumpkins on the kitchen island. “Okay! So, do you know how to carve a pumpkin?” You asked her as you got out two kitchen knives.
“I think so,” Natasha replied, watching you with amusement written across her features.
“Oh,” you nodded a bit and set a knife on the counter in front of her.
“Why don’t you teach me anyway,” she suggested, having noticed that you deflated a little bit.
You perked up and nodded. “Okay! First you want to cut a hole in the top, not too big because you want to have plenty of space for your design, but you still want to be able to get your hand in comfortably,”
You cut a hole in the top of your pumpkin and then Natasha does the same, smiling at you all the while. “And now?” She asked as she set the knife down, already knowing the next step but wanting to hear your excitement as you explained it to her.
“Now comes the fun part! The guts,” You told her. You grabbed two pairs of latex gloves (you found a box of them in your laundry room and thought it best not to ask questions you may not like the answer to) and two large spoons. “You wanna scrape the insides with the spoons to loosen it all up, and then you want to pull it all out as best as you can. One bowl is for seeds,” you pointed at one of the two large mixing bowls in front of you, “the other is for the rest.”
She nodded as she took the top off of the pumpkin. She then slipped on the gloves and picked up the spoon, beginning your task. You grabbed your phone and connected it to your bluetooth speaker as she worked, playing your Halloween playlist before setting it aside and joining her in pulling out the guts.
“Why are we separating the seeds again, love?” Natasha asked as she dumped a handful of the seeds into the appropriate bowl in front of you.
“You stick some melted butter in that bowl, some salt, and I like to add a bit of sugar too, then you put it on a baking sheet in the oven for like, half an hour to an hour, and then we can snack on them,” you explained as you did the same as her, depositing a good amount of seeds into the bowl and smiling over at her.
She got a bit of a mischievous look on her face as she turned to you. “Baby, you’ve got a little something right…” she had her hand in a fist except for one finger as she raised it to your face, then she smirked devilishly and opened her hand to reveal a glob of pumpkin guts which she then smeared across your cheek, “there,” she completed her sentence.
Your mouth dropped open as you felt the cold, orange goop on your skin, offended and yet amused. “Romanoff!” You huffed, wiping it off with your gloved hand which just left a smear of orange on your cheek from your own pumpkin.
She laughed at your predicament, the one that she had put you in, and grabbed a paper towel, wiping off any pumpkin residue and then pressing a kiss onto your newly cleaned cheek. “Nat to the rescue,”
“Nat caused the problem,” you muttered as you turned back to your problem, your lips in a pout as you gave her a playful glare. You finished scooping out your pumpkin and she just watched, already finished but not wanting to move on to the next step without you.
“What’s next, my dear?” She asked like you were all buddy-buddy and she hadn’t just betrayed you with her pumpkin smearing ways. You looked over and the sweet smile on her face was too damn beautiful to be mad at.
Grumbling, you moved away from your pumpkin and slipped off your gloves, tossing them into the garbage can and watching as Natasha threw her pair in perfectly without even moving. You then opened a drawer and pulled out two sharpies. “Now we have to plan what we want to carve out, draw it before you cut it out,” you instructed her. “Since it’s your first time, you might want to go with something simple,” you added as a warning. She shrugged as she took the marker. “Probably a smart idea, but that wouldn’t be very impressive, now would it?” She winked at you.
As if she needed to be any more impressive than she already was.
“Well, it’s not a competition, but have at it,” you said as you approached your own pumpkin. Taking in the size and shape, you thought of what you might want to do, tapping the end of your sharpie against your chin. Meanwhile, Natasha had moved her pumpkin to the other side of the counter and had already started drawing, but was keeping it a surprise from you.
“You know, it’s not good to have secrets in a relationship,” you mused thoughtfully as you brought the tip of your sharpie to the skin of the pumpkin. You had selected the best side and now it was time for your design.
“I just want to surprise you,” Natasha replied with a chuckle, capping her marker and picking up her knife once again, seemingly ready to continue with her design.
“Well then I will be surprising you too!” You stated, also setting down your marker and picking up the knife. You were very careful with your design, not wanting to ruin it. And a silence fell between the two of you as you both worked, the only thing that permeated the air was the sound of Michael Jackon’s Thriller as it played through your speaker.
“Done!” You and Natasha declared at the same time, causing you both to smile.
“Turn around the pumpkins on a count of three?” You asked as you set your knife down and lay your hands on the cold surface of your carved pumpkin.
Natasha nodded. “Sure, 1…”
“2…” you continued, the anticipating building
“3!” You both said it in unison and spun your pumpkins around.
Her design was not the simple kind you had suggested to her. It was a beautiful spider's web, the spaces in between the webbing had been cut out and you could only imagine how cool it would look when you added the candle. Yours wasn’t a classic design either, it was a crescent moon on the bottom right corner with one large star and one smaller one on the face of it as well.
“Yours looks great, my dear,” Natasha told you, walking over and pressing a kiss onto your temple. “What’s next?” She asked.
You smiled, admiring her pumpkin for a second longer before looking over at her. “We stick the seeds in the oven and put on our costumes,” you informed her, excited to show her what you had picked.
So that’s what you did. Since you had two pumpkins you had needed a second baking sheet for all of the seeds, but soon enough they were in the oven. Natasha promised that any seeds that the two of you couldn’t eat she would bring to the Avengers who would devour them in seconds.
“You get changed in our room, I’ll get changed in the guest room,” you told her, wiping off your hands of any residual pumpkin goop.
She raised an eyebrow. “I’ve seen you naked before, I think we can change in the same room,” Natasha pointed out, doing the same and walking up to you.
But you skirted out of her grasp and shook your head. “Nope! I want to surprise you!” You insisted, walking backwards as you headed towards the guest room, careful not to run into any walls.
Natasha shook her head, her arms crossed over her chest. “What happened to not keeping secrets in a relationship?” She teased, referencing your earlier statement.
You just stuck your tongue out at her and turned, jogging to the guest bedroom. You already stashed your costume in the closet in a plastic bag so you pulled it down and lay everything out on the bed. Since you weren’t actually going out in the costume, it didn’t need to have shoes or be warm at all, which was good because your costume had neither of those things.
It was tight black shorts and a matching black t-shirt with a low V-neckline. You had originally been a bit unsure, but you thought it was fitting as a sort-of mimic to Natasha’s Black Widow costume. Around your hips was a belt with a holster for a fake gun on one side and two sets of fake knives on the other. You thought you looked pretty badass as well as smoking hot, you were sure Natasha was going to love it.
But as you walked into the kitchen to check on how the seeds were doing in the oven, you realized you were way outmatched when it came to a sexy costume. Jessica. Rabbit. Your beautiful girlfriend was wearing the signature red sequined dress and long purple gloves, her crimson hair styled to match the characters as best as she could, her eyelids adorned with purple and her lips painted red.
She had been looking down at her phone but looked up when she heard you walk in, setting the device on the counter. “Love, you look so cute,” she told you, walking over and wrapping her arms around your waist.
“Cute?” You replied with a frown, placing your hands on her shoulders and stepping back so she was forced away from you a bit, allowing you to look at her properly. “I was going for dangerously sexy, not cute,” you informed her, dragging back your arms to cross them over your chest.
“Dangerous? You?” Natasha asked with a smirk, she loved the fire you had in you, and she loved when you let it show.
“Yes! And sexy,” you repeated that part too, that was really the most important part.
“Well, you’re always sexy,” she informed you, stepping towards you again and placing one of her hands on your hips and one of her hands on your face, gently cupping your cheek as she tugged you close and kissed you. Once you broke away she smiled. “You’re just also adorable.”
You huffed and got out of her grasp, crossing your arms once again and narrowing your eyes as you glared at her. “Natasha!” You said, almost in a scolding tone.
She held her hands up in surrender. “I can’t help it, baby, I’m sorry,” she said, lying straight to your face.
“No you’re not.” You replied.
She shrugged. “No, I’m not.” She agreed with a smile.
You rolled your eyes but you couldn’t help that her smile was contagious and made you want to smile as well. “Ugh, I hate you, you’re the worst,” you stated.
She leaned over and pressed a kiss onto the corner of your lips. “Come on, why don’t you show me some more of those scooby-doo movies?” She suggested.
“We can’t, we have to be on alert for trick-or-treaters,” you pointed out.
She shrugged. “Not an issue. I put out a bowl with a note that says ‘please take one’,” she told you.
You only groaned. “Kids never take just one,” you informed her, shaking your head.
Her grin only got wider as she pulled out an unopened bag of assorted fun-size chocolates. “I know. All the kids will think other kids got to it first,” she told you.
Your eyes lit up and you immediately grabbed the bag from her, ripping it open and pulling out your favourite one. “I love you,” you said. “I thought I was the worst?” She teased as she led you over to the couch so you could watch more movies together.
You nodded. “Oh you are,” you told her, plopping down onto the couch and leaning into her as she sat next to you. “But I love you anyway.”
She laughed softly and shook her head, adjusting her dress as she put on a movie. She kissed your temple. “Happy Halloween, my love.”
You smiled. “Happy Halloween.”
