Maya had never been sentimental. Least of all about objects, given that she lost everything but the clothes on her back when her home went up in flames.

But once, when she was still a fledgling, she fell for a dockhand's beautiful daughter. Her hair was long and flaming red, usually half pinned back with intricate plaits and decorative metal hairpins in the shape of flowers. Ruby was her name, and Maya was enchanted by her. Completely besotted.

On a warm summer's evening, Maya took her climbing trellises and they sat on a roof to smoke and watch the sunset together. That was when Ruby taught her how to plait hair. First, the normal way, then an Orlesian braid and finally fishtail.

After the sun sunk below the horizon, with Maya's curfew fast approaching, Ruby pulled a golden locket from a pouch and gave it to her. It contained a small piece of her hair, strikingly vibrant against the locket's pale interior. Ruby explained that it once belonged to her mother, but now Maya could have it and keep a piece of her love close to her heart at all times.

So she did, for a few months at least.

Then, in one of his random room searches, Viago found it under her pillow. He said he liked to make sure his protogés weren't 'hiding contraband' or 'growing idiotic attachments to trinkets', but Maya eventually learned it was just about control.

Wordlessly, he plucked the necklace from the bed and held it up between thumb and forefinger. He opened the clasp carefully and inspected the rich red lock of hair inside.

Maya held her breath. Her wide eyes were glued to his form. The room was silent save for the soft ticking of her bedside clock.

She flinched as Viago abruptly threw the locket to the floor and immediately stomped on it harshly three times.

He glared at her for a few seconds, but her horrified gaze was on the floor beneath his boot. He promptly turned on his heel and left.

As soon as he was gone, Maya crumpled to the floor and gingerly took the warped metal in her hands. It was broken, the loop that attached locket to chain snapped off and the locket itself crushed and flattened. Fiery hairs were loose and scattered about.

Her tears came hot, dripping down her cheeks, but she dared not make a noise.

The worst of it came after, when two weeks later Ruby was dead. Early one morning, a fisherman found her body floating face down in the canals.

It turned out that she was betrothed to another man, and when her father and brother discovered she'd been having a love affair with a female Crow, they were not pleased at all.

How strange that the following week, both of them fell horribly ill and passed away themselves, at the same time as Viago's poison 'Welcome End' inexplicably went missing...

sobbed, kicked my feet, gasped, whined, curled up, rolled over, trembled, scratched, clutched my chest, collapsed, hyperventilated, slammed my fists, yanked my hoodie, flailed, convulsed, whimpered, bawled, crumbled, squealed, clenched my jaw, stomped, hiccuped, wrung my hands, tore at my sleeves, pouted, hiccupped, fell to my knees, screeched, flopped over, covered my face, choked on air, shuddered, writhed, threw my phone, bit my lip, smacked the floor, thrashed, groaned, curled into a ball, snatched my pillow, flung myself dramatically, twisted my rings, knocked over my drink, huffed, gasped for air, tugged at my hair, kicked my blanket off, whispered “no way,” rolled my eyes, threw my head back, muttered under my breath, collapsed onto my bed, pressed my hands to my temples, spun in circles, shook my head violently, fell backwards, dramatically sighed.

i just will say i was making a hasemura mv and this ep makes it sadder.. 😈 (😭)

technically it’s a wip & i dont think it’ll ever be finished or published but it was a sad little remus pov thing (typical) where he was just miserably in love w his childhood best friend for like 15 years & sirius was having a very bad time forever and ever & not able to make room for anything but surviving even tho they loved each other etc etc (i think i listened to house song like 100 times in one day & said wow. wow how can i make this even gayer and sadder)
