the 90s are so fascinating for both Dick and Babs from a romantic standpoint because they're both working through MASSIVE crashouts for extremely different reasons: Babs is recovering from The Killing Joke and breaking off her engagement with Jason Bard, while Dick is reeling from his marriage to Kory failing, Joey dying, the Titans dissolving, not being Bruce's first choice to fill in as Batman for him after Knightfall, etc etc. Them getting together—and their romance in general—is a slow burn, slow-building relationship explicitly presented as "okay, they're both independent, mature, and confident characters now, this is the only way this was ever going to work and now they're ready for it."

Birds of Prey (1999) #8 was the first time in the post-Crisis universe the potential for their romance was explicitly acknowledged, but there are these….hints, here and there, in mid-90s comics (post-Dick returning to Gotham after the dissolution of the Titans) that indicate DickBabs was something that was definitely being thought about in the Bat Offices. Because Dick is CLEARLY not over Kory during this era and he dates 2-3 other women before he and Babs get together, but the hints are definitely there! It's actually really fun to read and realize that the entirety of the mid to late 90s is mostly just them reconnecting, talking to and supporting each other, and building up towards the more explicit romance in Nightwing/Birds of Prey at the speed of molasses.

Like, the "it was you. it was always you" trope DOES NOT WORK for them! It invalidates their other relationships and misses the whole point of what made them work in the first place! The whole point is that they're not the same people they were before their lives disintegrated, and through the rebuilding process they reconnected with each other as people who have grown, changed, and learned from their previous life experiences and found each other that way. They only work because of the adults they grew into being.

And then they finally get together, and it's great for a couple of years!

….then of course the mid-2000s hit the towers, and they break up, and we have several years of Dick and Babs explicitly thinking of each other as "the one who got away" and tiptoeing around the subject of whether or not they should give it another shot at some point.

idk it's just routinely astonishing to me how many people don't really recognize that Dick has to have already gone through the entire NTT era and his relationship with Kory and that Babs has to be Oracle and a grown woman who had a life before Dick for that romance to work. DickBabs only works as Nightwing/Oracle. Trying to retcon it into being Batgirl/Robin (beyond a 'childhood crush that is never acted on' aspect) or Batgirl/Nightwing is setting it up for failure every time.

also yet another reason why current DickBabs is shit, because DC is ignoring that a large part of the appeal of the relationship was the slowburn "part of rebuilding a new life after the old one has disintegrated" aspect, but that's a conversation for another post I guess

Useless Veilguard fact of the day: Day 52

The body proportions of all characters are set in their head preset files. One of the values in those presets is the Heels value - it's a special value that allows NPC's feet to imitate the shape of high-heeled shoes (or something like it), and can make them appear taller without affecting their physical height.

Here are some comparison shots of Bellara and Lucanis with their default value of 0 (left), and with the heel value set to 1 (right).

Here's an example of how the heel value affects NPCs using Lucanis as a test subject:

The only companion that actually has a Heel value above 0 is Neve (I've checked a bunch of other NPCs, but haven't found a single one that also uses it. They may exist, though, I haven't checked every single one!)

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but Bowen Marsh's mutiny seems like it's a rather poor plan to do when there's an upset giant and wildling princess in the other room and a bunch of wildlings (who definitely outnumber the Watch in Castle Black more broadly and the conspirators specifically, conspiracies are hard to hide the larger they get) about to come out and see what the commotion is about to find Jon Snow, the kid that let them go south, bleeding out in the snow.

“For the Watch” is your clue there! It wasn't a logical thing, it was an ideological thing. Like, I mean, when the Lord Commander you have multiple ongoing grievances with for breaking his vows, cheating his way into the position, allying the Watch with a king and thus involving it in politics, making a painted catamite his steward just to fuck him, letting wildlings through the Wall, letting wildlings join the Watch, letting women join the Watch, marrying an innocent northern maiden off to yet another wildling, giving all the Watch's winter stores to these barbaric thieving raiders, putting the Watch in debt to foreigners, sending good men off to die on pointless missions to bring even more of these useless mouths back to burden us... and now this so-called Lord Commander goes and says that he didn't actually kill a deserter (the deserter) but sent him off with spearwives to kidnap another northern girl, and he's going to break his vows again and desert the Watch with an army of these wildlings he's gathered to fight the Warden of the North's son... well. The future-proofing of the plan wasn't really a concern at that moment. Tempers boiled over, you could say.

Summerhall by Fran Vegas

created for the 10th anniversary of The World of Ice & Fire

I’ve seen confusion about the “canon” nature of the artwork, despite our initial post indicating that this is a wholly unofficial series of commissions, for a wholly unofficial anniversary celebration. That said, of course, we direct the artists to the books, and in the cases of dragons we felt free to give them the colors that George had indicated to us for The Rise of the Dragon, which we couldn’t find a way to share in all cases. But this piece of art, by the terrific Fran Vegas, is different. The location is one that has been referenced, and glimpsed once in official art (in The World of Ice and Fire in fact): Summerhall. But the scene… well, we admit, that is what some fans call “headcanon”. We just love the idea of the image, and feeling free to see it rendered by a capable artist, we asked for it. —Elio Garcia

Not beating the furry allegations but I am thinking about a nonhuman character who’s been hurt and scared for so long, one day purring for the first time in forever when they finally feel safe and supported.

Does her chest ache when she realizes how happy she is, how much she wants this safety to last, knowing it won’t?

When a friend realizes how much the character trusts zir, enough to purr when around zir, does ze feel unworthy of that trust?

Are their new friends scared or worried by the sound, not understanding their biology/natural behavior, and think they might be sick or upset?

Does it frighten him, because he used to be hurt for his ‘annoying’ self soothing, or is he embarrassed to show such comfort?
