Yurakuen in Diamond Hotel Offers Eat-All-You-Can Yakiniku
Ever since I first experienced Yurakuenâs Teppanyaki Eat-All-You-Can at Diamond Hotel Philippines, I have always wanted to come back for their premium seafood and meat dishes. Surprisingly, I just found out that Yurakuen also has a Yakiniku Eat-All-You-Can promotion, where guests can grill their own food at the specialized Yakiniku tables over Japanese charcoal. Thatâs why I was so excited to visit Diamond Hotel last week to try this delicious option for myself.
Yurakuen is Diamond Hotelâs award-winning Japanese restaurant located at the ground floor, just past its equally elegant lobby lounge. This dining oasis is one of the prettiest places you can find in the city, even with all the newer hotels and resorts that have opened. I always marvel at its three-story high floor-to-ceiling glass windows illuminating the iconic glass cherry blossom tree in the center.
The teppanyaki grills are usually what diners go for when they visit Yurakuen (Read: Teppanyaki All You Can at Yurakuen in Diamond Hotel). This is where you have your own personal chef who cooks in front of you on a teppan table.
However, there is also a separate area nearby which offers a different dining experience altogether. The Yakiniku Eat-All-You-Can is available daily at the Yurakuen Japanese Restaurant for only P3,580 net per person. Here, you can grill your own meats and seafood instead of watching the chefs do it for you. This is not just your usual yakiniku or samgyupsal buffet, because it comes with premium dishes and ingredients that you wonât find in other cheaper alternatives.
Guests can order as much as they want from the Yakiniku Menu which also comes with other Japanese appetizers, salads and soups. It also includes a round of standard drinks.
Diamond Hotelâs Japanese MasterChef Hiroshi Masuda personally welcomed us to Yurakuen as we were all excited to begin our yakiniku adventure.
But before we fired up the grills, the Yakiniku all-you-can-eat experience starts off with a variety of appetizers that would definitely entice your palate. I ordered some Crab Stick Salad for myself but you can also try the Wakame Seaweed Salad or the Garden Salad.
I also had some warm Miso Soup for my starters. They also offer Egg Soup and Seaweed Soup to whet your appetite.
Now this is my type of appetizer! This Japanese platter comes with fresh Tuna and Salmon Sushi and Sashimi plus Crab Sticks, Ebi Tempura Roll and California Roll. Other appetizers you can order include Kimchi, Dilis Tsukudani, Pickled Vegetables, and Peanuts.
Each guest can order 1 round of standard drinks including Japanese beer, soda, and juices.
Now itâs time to roll up our sleeves and get ready to grill these unlimited servings of premium seafood, meat and vegetables. The tabletop grills use Japanese charcoal for cooking. This is really much better than the typical electric or portable grills used at other restaurants because you can taste the smokiness of the dishes.
We started with a seafood platter consisting of U.S. Scallops, Squid, Shrimp, Salmon. Just put the items on the hot grill and let it cook according to your preference. The plump and juicy scallops were really good, as well as the fresh shrimps and tender salmon.
Carnivores will love to have these meaty items on the grill. Thereâs Pork Belly, Beef Rib Eye, Beef Top Striploin, Beef Short Ribs, Baby Lamb Chops, and Chicken on the Yakiniku menu.
I really enjoyed having my own Surf anf Turf options. Itâs so easy so cook these and I can eat and order as much as like.
Donât forget about the vegetables and make sure to include some mushrooms, pumpkin, onions, and sweet potato as well. All these meats and seafood go down better with a bowl of their Seafood Fried Rice.
There were so many meats to choose from but I just had to try them all. The ribeye steak was my favorite, especially when paired with the shrimp. You will definitely not find these premium meats at other all you can eat restaurants.
Itâs great when you have a seat mate who loves to cook, because all I had to so was to eat everything on the table. Finally, after all that grilling, we ended our yakiniku adventure with some cool desserts such as Seasonal Fresh Fruits and Ice Cream.
We would like to thank Ms. Melanie Samonte for hosting our yakiniku group and always taking care of us whenever we visit Diamond Hotel. Fish on a Keto Diet

Rapidly increasing levels of toxicity in our oceans have made safe fish harder to come by. However, fish is rich in micronutrients that make it a great option⊠so, whatâs the answer? Should we, or should we not eat fish?

I never used to like fish. Growing up in Calgary, Alberta (read: the prairies) there was ZERO options for me to enjoy fresh-caught fish. And, so, I didnât like the fish I had, and chose not to eat it. This was until I moved on to a sailboat in the Caribbean⊠talk about fish options!
However, not all are created equal⊠though, fresh fish is tasty!
A lot of people shy away from fish because of the fishy taste. I got news for you: thatâs not normal! Fish shouldnât taste fishy⊠at all! And, if you choose the right fish it not only will taste good, but has the promise to benefit your health a bit, too.
I like incorporating fish into my ketogenic diet to boost omega-3 intake, adjust protein intake, and add some variety to my protein so that I donât develop an allergy to beef. Side note: this is a huge concern of mine. I LOVE beef and couldnât imagine my life without it. For someone like me who has a propensity toward developing food allergies, I like to add rotation to my diet so my favorite foods like beef, almonds, and coconut, donât begin causing a reaction in me.
First, letâs go through the benefits of fish, and then weâll talk about the concerns, and the options I like to stay safe.
Not only are fish rich in nutrients, but in the very nutrients that many of us are lacking⊠specifically, iodine. Low iodine levels are associated with increased risk of hypothyroid symptoms and imbalance of the thyroid. As someone who works to manage her thyroid health, fish is a must for me!
Additional nutrients in fish include vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Two important components that are crucial for optimal brain function and hormonal support.
The Dark Side of Fish: Mercury
Mercury is a significant concern in fish, especially predatory fish. Mercury is a neurotoxin and can have severe effects on your brain and nervous system.
Here are the safe fish you want to gravitate toward if mercury is a concern for you:

Mussels
Anchovies
Shrimp
Oysters
Clams
Scallops
Crab
If youâre going to eat fish, the WHO and CDC recommend limiting yourself to no more than one serving of high mercury fish like tuna per week. That includes both light tuna and albacore. In my opinion? I aim to have high-mercury fish no more than a couple of times a year, if that.
Be aware that the following fish have the highest levels of mercury:

Bigeye tuna
Avoiding fish is certainly one way to avoid mercury or PCBs. But is that the wisest choice, given the benefits of eating fish? I think itâs striking a balance. I personally choose not to eat fish with high levels of mercury, and when I do eat fish (about twice a week) I go for wild caught options. This choice reduces my PCB intake considerably, lowering cancer risk, while also supporting my heart health because of the omega-3 intake.
Why We Donât Want to Eat Farmed Fish
Unfortunately, farm raised fish are not a good option. Itâs really important that you find a source of fish thatâs wild-caught and not farm-raised. Why?
The concern with farmed fish is their diet as well as their toxic exposure. The fish food pellets which theyâre fed consist mostly of chicken, wheat, corn and soy, ingredients which are obviously far from what a fish would eat in the wild. Fish that are fed a high fat diet in fish farms also contain fat soluble toxins such as PCBâs, or polychlorinated biphenyls. These are introduced into the animal at a higher rate making the fish themselves much more toxic to the person eating them.

When I started eating fish, I was a bit unclear on how to cook it properly. If thatâs you, Iâve included some of my favorite ways to prep!
What to Look for and Where to Purchase
So far, weâve covered which fish are safest when considering mercury content, how to prepare, and a strong warning to avoid farm-raised fish. Lastly, I need to give you the low-down on where to purchase!

Whatâs the whitefish? When I ordered, itâs been rockfish which is a pacific perch. While itâs lower in mercury than tuna, itâs higher than salmon. When I order again, I plan to get the salmon-only box⊠because the salmon is so good.
And, each large salmon filet comes with the skin. Now, you may think this is silly to mention, but Iâm guessing youâre keto. And, as a keto-er you need, need, need to make crispy salmon skin! Hereâs how you do it: remove the skin from the salmon before cooking the filet. Heat avocado oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Salt the salmon skin and place in the hot oil. Cook on both sides, 3 minutes. Transfer to a plate to cool, and then chow down. Itâll be crispy and wonderful and deliciously tasty!

Pizza is Always Trendy and Trending

 Pizza is definitely a favourite food among Italians and people of various ethnic backgrounds around the world!Â
Being Italian qualified me for once arranging and ordering a pizza lunch for our work group of twenty. Â This lunch was in recognition for a great job we were doing. I was to take a poll to see what the most popular toppings were and then order the pizzas accordingly. Â Of course, asking twenty different people, you could possibly get twenty different answers!
The most popular request was for the Mediterranean Pizza which consists of black olives, Spanish onions, feta cheese and sun dried tomatoes. We had one definite meat lover, two vegetarian, one wanted the Hawaiian pizza, and one wanted pizza alla bianca meaning no sauce and the others said they would eat anything that was ordered.Â
Pizzas and pizza toppings have been adapted over the years to reflect peopleâs varying tastes. Â While the traditional pepperoni and cheese pizza is still popular, non traditional gourmet toppings such as duck, turkey, lamb, caviar, clams, scallops, smoked salmon, and shrimp have become trendy. Â Â
Vegetables toppings now include snow peas, alfalfa sprouts, bamboo shoots, various herbs, roasted garlic, shredded carrots, broccoli, sautĂ©ed spinach, grilled eggplant and zucchini.  Not sure if Bugs Bunny would approve of carrots on pizza?  The pizza toppings obviously define what type of pizza it is.Â
If you take a global look at pizza toppings, you would find that they would differ greatly; reflecting local tastes, home-grown foods and cultural favourites. Brazilians favour green peas on top of their pizzas. In Russia they dish up their pizzas covered in a combination of sardines, tuna, mackerel, salmon and onions. Â Red herring is also a topping of choice. In India, they like pickled ginger, minced mutton and âpaneer,â a form of cottage cheese traditionally made with cowâs milk. Â Tandoori chicken and chicken âtikkaâ which are tandoor-grilled pieces of chicken are also popular toppings there. Â In Japan âMayo Jagaâ is all the rage which is mayonnaise, potato and bacon. Other favourites include eel and squid. Australians enjoy shrimp and pineapple, as well as barbeque toppings on their pies. Â Costa Ricans favour coconut on their pizzas. Â Â
From toppings to whatâs trending out in the pizza planetary universe, well have you heard of 24 hour Pizza ATM vending machines! Also, trending is the rise and shine pizza! Breakfast pizzas with eggs, bacon, sausages, and cheese. That pizza takes care of breakfast, now onto the dessert pizza! Yes, pizza topped with Nutella, marshmallows and caramel sauce! Or a cinnamon roll pizza, cookies and cream pizza or virtually anything sweet and decadent would certainly solve your sweet tooth craving!Â
You might ask, âWhat do the Calabrese enjoy on their pizza?â Todayâs story and recipe hails from me, a Calabrese from Calabria. Â My husband Renato and I were both born in Calabria which is in the southern region of Italy. Â One of the toppings on my Calabrese Pizza alla Rizzuti is soppressata. Â Premium soppressata is based on the southern Italian traditional style, Calabrese. Â It is made from choice cuts of pork and premium spices. The salami is dry cured for several months before eating.
I recollect assisting my parents in making many a soppressata in our basement. Â The customary time of year was roughly the first week of February. Â The temperature outside had to be bitterly cold before my father would purchase the pork shoulders and thigh of the pig from his preferred butcher. He meticulously made sure that he added the right amount of pork fat from the loin as this combination of pork meat is what made the soppressata so flavourful. Like Emeril Lagasse always says âpork fat rules.â
I remember that he did not use a meat grinder to grind the meat. He would only use two sharp knives that he sharpened himself. He would first cut the meat into strips and then cut all of the pieces coarsely by hand.  He cut the meat just the right size every time.  We canât forget the other important factor, the seasoning of the meat before casing the meat mixture.  The mixture was spiced with lots of saltâŠI mean loads of salt, hot red pepper chili flakes and ground black pepper.  My mother always commented, âThatâs enough salt!â My father being Calabrese, did not listen and continued to add as much salt as he thought the mixture needed. There would never be exact measurements of anything. It was all done âa occhioâ or by eye. Â
Once the spiced meat mixture was put into the casings, he would carefully and skillfully tie each soppressata with butcherâs twine. Â Each one looked like a piece of art by the time he was finished. Â They were then hung to dry on a trellis which he constructed himself out of strong wood in our cantina or cold cellar. Â They needed to dry slowly so they could cure properly. The temperature had to be very cold at first and as time passed the temperature would fluctuate as the season progressed. Â At the end of the drying phase, the soppressata was stored in jars covered in olive oil. Â My dadâs judgment was always accurate from start to finish as the overall result of the soppressata was a dynamic red strongly flavoured piece of heaven. Â My mouth is salivating just thinking about it!
Remember that the most important workings of a great tasting pizza are: the dough or crust, the sauce and the toppings. Â I believe we have all of these components covered.
