In Pursuit of Mastery

           Using this mastery journal, I hope to document my progress through Full Sail’s Media Design Master of Fine Arts program from start to finish. By doing so, I will be able to see my growth as a designer, identify what inspires me, and house some of my favorite work.

           Primarily, I hope to learn more about myself as an artist and study what inspires me so I can cultivate creativity rather than waiting for it to happen to me. While we often think inspiration drops out of the sky at its own will, I’ve read about establishing habits to foster creativity on a more regular and habitual basis. For instance, during the months I produce the work I am most proud of, I can go back to my journal and reference what I used for inspiration and retrace my creative process. If you document and study your creative process, you can recreate those conditions with intention later on, turning on your personal “tap” for creativity.  

           I also intend to develop the habit of studying the work of masters in my field, using my mastery journal to collect the most interesting or thought-provoking works for me to reference later. If I want this course of study to turn into a profession I must treat it like one, and that means training, studying current trends, and finding mentors in my field, even if they are online.

           By the end of my program, I hope to see remarkable progress from this first journal entry to the last, not only in terms of advancing my technical ability, but also in understanding of my own creative thinking. I plan to continue using this journal throughout my early career, maintaining the habit of studying other people’s work and reflecting upon my own in the pursuit of mastery.

Many people know that lynda.com offers tutorials of various software programs, but they also have inspiring videos about artists, their work, and their creative processes. I love these videos because not only are they informational, they can reinvigorate me when I’m feeling stuck or uninspired.
