i know it’s a pretty common question you’ve probably been asked before, but what do you take inspiration from for your work? It’s extremely gorgeous and striking, I love the forms you create in your art and your watercolors :-)
thank you! honestly trying to pool together all my influences at this point in my life is kind of a gargantuan task, but I will try to name at least a few lol some of my earliest influences come from various surrealist painters I was exposed to at a relatively young age, primarily Salvador Dalí, Remedios Varo, H.R.Giger, Robert Steven Connett and Zdzisław Beksiński

As for more current influences, I take a lot of inspiration from many of my contemporaries and peers, which are honestly, too many to name, but some of the most instrumental for my current conception of aesthetics have been Illustrators like Medusawolf, Adam Burke, Brandon Geurts

Aside of painters, I also take a lot of influence from different art mediums that I consume, particularly film (mostly horror, sci-fi, and dark fantasy) and music (mostly extreme and experimental music), in fact, if you dig deep enough you might find most of my painting's names are references to, or directly lifted from song titles :P Another major aspect in my influences and themes is my personal fascination with the natural world, particularly with the world of arthropods

#Strel, a new character from Alan Brown’s (@_medusawolf_’s) #BatForce, has been revealed! I’m no etymology expert, but I did grow up for a few years in Italy and happen to know that the Italian word for bat is #pipistrello - Pipi*STREL*lo, I love it! This is also your regular reminder that every day that passes where this world doesn’t have an #openworldrpg set in #medusawolf’s world is dark and sad day. Let there be justice, people. @mediamolecule! Do you hear me??? I vow on the name of all that is unholy and esoteric I *will* (with Alan’s permission of course) create a game using the upcoming #DreamsPS4 creation suite, and it *will* catch some developer’s eye, then whoever they are must proceed to give #Medusawolf all the support and the moneys and the #game and #tvseries deals! ‘Youth of the Beast’ (2013) by Medusawolf serves contemporary Hieronymus-Bosch-energy. A complex composition to dive into… and never return! Alan’s usually features imagery that merges post-apocalyptic vibes, dark surrealism and a big dash of humour and sarcasm.

i see that u post a lot of art and other pieces! who are your favorite artists?
Oh god, there’s so many! I have a deep appreciation for art so I see something cool and I just hit that fuckin reblog/like button
First I want to shoutout some of my amazing artist friends: - @oceanmachine / @macseoindesign on ig- @seaside-cave / @seasidecave on ig- @leaddrunkard on ig(and while you’re here I make art myself! it’s all in the #my art tag on my blog and on @phantombeasts on ig)
For the classics, I like mostly surrealism, especially artists such as Max Ernst, Remedios Varo, Francis Bacon, Frida Kahlo, and Leonora Carrington. For other styles of art I like artists like Delacroix, Goya, Hieronymous Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, and a bunch of the funky art from books from Medieval times.
For newer artists the list is very long lol.
- Dan Seagrave: probably one of my most favorite artists Ever. the artwork he did for Clandestine by Entombed always amazes when I see it.
- Adam Burke: all his artwork is stunning. favorites include covers for Fringe by Lurk, Sonoran Deprivation by Gatecreeper, and Firebreather’s self titled.
- Richey Beckett: what is there even to say about Richey’s art? it really speaks for itself.
- Anthony Roberts: best known for his artwork for British doom metal band Conan (who absolutely rule btw)
- Paul Romano: i mean. come on. with Mastodon being my favorite band of course I’m gonna like his art. from the Remission fire horse to the Russian themes of Crack The Skye, and other non-Mastodon art he’s done, i havent seen a single work i don’t like.
- Marald Van Haasteren / Maraldart: probably best known for his collaborations with John Dyer Baizley of Baroness (another great artist), but he’s done plenty of art for plenty of other bands as well.
- Pushead: being into Metallica and other metal things, how could i not like Pushead?
- Ian Miller: most known for art for Bolt Thrower and Warhammer plus some Tolkien stuff.
- Alan Brown / Medusawolf: another artist I found thanks to Mastodon! he did the cover and other art for Emperor of Sand. his style is just killer.
- Dusty Ray / @sloppjockey_ert: surrealism plus some gore and horrors.
- Tom Davis / @darktransmissions: HOT DAMN LOOK AT THAT SWEET ASS LINEWORK
- @farjarallanda: i sure do love me some super detailed ink drawings
- Collin Estrada / @caestrad: more super detailed inks! first work that caught my eye was the saber tooth cat skull with a blade through it.
- AJ Fosik: hey whadya know more Mastodon art! the fact that all his works are made of wood just blows my mind. they all look amazing.
- Nick Keller: his artworks for Beastwars and Horn Of The Rhino. enough said.
- @wolfskulljack: all her work is just super fucking cool.
- @wayzdead: YEA BABEY for the colorful dark art!
- Mark Richards / @heavy.hand: more detailed metal style art!
- Ian Permana / @iannocent: noticing a pattern here?
- Jenna Barton / @dappermouth: all the art she creates stirs up a hauntingly whimsical feeling.
- @mxmorggo: just look at all that art. what is there not to like.
- Skinner / @theartofskinner: the artwork for Once More Round The Sun by Mastodon blew my mind when I first saw it, still blows my mind today. Skinner’s art is simply Fun to look at. (the Mastodon boys sure do have a good eye for art.)
- @spaghettibastard (here on tumblr): again just super detailed super amazing art. every piece makes me go HOLY SHIT
- @iguanamouth: i know you know iguanamouth. you know why i like their stuff especially after seeing all the other artists.
- Boneface: found him through the artwork for Queens of the Stone Age’s Like Clockwork. he’s done some other album covers and even movie posters as well.
There’s definitely ones I missed, there’s just so much good art out there (and this list got long) ! I like almost anything that looks like anything made by any of the artists I listed above.tldr If it looks sick as fuck I’ll probably like it.
Thanks so much for this ask! Visual art is one of my favorite things next to music :)

gerardway: My wonderful wife gave me the gift of #art this Christmas! This is one of my favorite paintings I have ever seen, though I can only show a detail of it because of the size. The painting is by one of my favorite artists, @_medusawolf_ , who is also an incredibly sweet person. The painting is titled “The Call of Cthulhu”, and I got to enjoy process photos that Alan posted right here on Instagram, which is how I fell in love with the painting. You should definitely give him a follow to see more of his amazing work. Happy Holidays! #cthulhu #hplovecraft #medusawolf #artissmart
