This is reminding of one of my favorite webcomics that never finished, I think Metacarpolis or something like that.
Concept: Depressing dystopian factory where everything is gray and samey and the workers are called by their employee numbers by an ominous deep voice.
But it's a really great place to work with high salaries, excellent benefits, and a flexible working schedule with plenty of paid leave. They just like the dystopian aesthetic.

Got my POD version of Metacarpolis Vol. 1 and it is legit QUITE PRETTY.  It’s no offset printing but it it is pretty darn good for not having to kickstart a whole thing just to hold it in my hands.
AND GUESS WHAT I PUT IT UP FOR SALE

Great sci-fi webcomics
"Westward", "The Woken", "Stonebreaker" are top webcomics with excellent art and deep and fascinating stories, but there are many others.
The web has enabled cheap immediate publishing of content by many highly capable and creative authors, who would have found it difficult to get published through commercial channels, and this has benefited comics publishing too.
Here are some other sci-fi webcomics that I consider great:
"6-Commando" In alt future soviet-allies war in Africa with AI tanks. Complex characters, and including the AI in the tanks. Hard sci-fi, excellent art, good story. Published weekly (or less) in color page.
"Blood spattered socks" Time travel boy and AI girl try to prevent AI mistake. Hard sci-fi. Good art, the story is complex but raises many interesting issues. Format is color page Published a couple of time a week as color (sometimes black and white) page.
"Cyberbunk" Hard sci-fi with elves and rebel robots and gnomes and political plots. The inspiration is fantasy, as there are elves, gnomes, orks, and zombies (robots), but the setting is entirely hard sci-fi. The art is great and the story a bit convuluted but with several interesting ideas. Published very big color pages every week.
"Demon Archives" In post apocalyptic city and russian electrical plant, survivors deal with ancient plots and contemporary savages. Includes nice and sociopathic AIs, and interesting characters. Hard sci-fi. Art is good, story is deep, the world is well thought out. Published twice a week as color page.
"Derelict" Postapocalyptic with invasion from alt reality. Great art, deep story. Hard sci-fi with fantasy elements. Great art, deep story. Published as color page, with a long hiatus.
"Dresden Codak" Girl with strange memories becomes cyborg and tries to unravel a strangely changed future world. Hard sci-fi. Great art, good story with quite a bit of humour. Published monthly as full page color.
"Girl Genius" Very popular steampunk comics with mad scientist lineages ruling Europe and creating lots of trouble. Steampunk sci-fi. Great art, fairly deep story. Published most days in color pages.
"Half Man" War with vicious aliens, and two war orphans have grown up to be a military doctor and a commando who was captured by the aliens and horribly tortured, and who is now quite unstable. Hard sci-fi. The art is a bit simplistic, but the story is deep and interesting with good characters. Published weekly as color page.
"I BOX: Jenny Mysterious" Tough but nice girl becomes time travelling zen master with alien friends. Mostly hard sci-fi. The art is good, and the story has several interesting themes. Format is black and white page published weekly.
"I BOX: Stardrop" Various aliens who are mostly totally human end up on Earth and find it interesting, while in space huge battles are being though. Format is black and white page published weekly.
"Mare Internum" Two scientists in a mission to mars find biocomputer sea left behind by martians billions of year ago, and since they have both deep psychiatric issues they act out. The most reasonable characters are an ancient martian left behind, and the AI in a robot used by the scientists. Hard sci-fi. Great art, story nice but the characters implausibly psycotic. Published twice a week as full page color.
"M.F.K." In desert world of sleeping gods girl just wants to scatter her mother's ashes, but the gods want to wake up. Fantasy. Great art, amusing story. On long hiatus.
"Metacarpolis" Ignorable city founded by natives and english colonists with the help of an alien intellect and with mad scientists. Mostly hard sci-fi with some bit of japanese fantasy. Published twice a week in as color page.
"Mindfold" A rebel military officer is sent by a novel technique from Earth to a far away planet in which humans are now centaurs with tiger lower bodies, and magic sort of works. Great art, great story with implausibly wild "strong female protagonists" (the only males seen so far are some background characters). Published every week or two in full page color.
"NEOKOSMOS" In a remote space station human children are kept by alien doctors in isolation to perform cultural experiments, but some other aliens attack the space station and the children escape. Hard sci-fi. Published occasionally as animation frame in color. It has been cancelled unfortunately.
"New Yesterday" Complicated flashback plot of a group of prisoner rebels in a future corporate dystopia. Hard sci-fi. Great art, good story.
"Outsider" In the future humanity contacts aliens during a massive war and the only survivor of a contact mission is a young Earth man who gets taken aboard by a warship of one of the main sides in the war, and the ship is staffed only by very cute female elf space soldiers that looks pretty much identical to humans except they are blue and have pointy ears. Great art, great story. Hard sci-fi. Published occasionally in full page colour.
"R:IL Persona" Earth boy reincarnates as psychic warrior in postapocalyptic future and needs to understand what is going on and navigate local politics. The The graphics Hard sci-fi. Published every week in full page colour or black and white, but the site layout is hard to navigate and uses very heavy duty JavaScript, to the point that reading the comic takes quite a bit of patience.
"Romantically apocalyptic" Postapocalyptic with corporate dystopia developing immensely powerful AIs reaching singularity and nanotech but ruled by crazy corporate logic. The hero is a human survivor who finds and is guided by a seemingly delusional person towards the place where the AI can be reprogrammed. Great graphics, good story (the other protagonist is a computer systems administrator), but a bit difficult to follow, also because of the surreal story. Hard sci-fi. Published monthly in big color page.
"Schlock mercenary" A very popular strip about a band of semi-reasonable space mercenaries and some big AIs and many alien races in the future and they complications that come from technology and its misapplication. The graphics are good, the story is good and involves interesting issues. Hard sci-fi. Published daily in color three panel strip.
"Tangled river" Colony spaceship reaches planet with human-like natives, but something makes all technology stop working. Then the spaceship that brought them crashes in the jungle and teenager and her mom and friend join expedition to find it. Good art, interesting story. Sci-fi. Published weekly in color page.
"The End" Humans are accidentally abducted first by birdlike aliens, and then by human aliens who live on barren planet where almost only mushrooms grows and who have pychic auras. The birdlike aliens try to rescue them, but big mysteries around both races and the past. Good art, good story, even if some characters are unbelievably stupid. Hard sci-fi. Published twice a week in small page color.
