Lessons from Business Model Implementation and Management.
As part of my journey in the Master of Science in Innovation & Entrepreneurship program at Full Sail University, the course 'Business Model Implementation and Management' has served as a vital extension of the work I began in the previous module. This reflective journal post summarizes my experiences, learnings, and future applications derived from this course, particularly in the context of Upside Media, my growing AI-powered content agency.
1. Original Goal for This Course
My original goal for this course was to develop a clear, actionable roadmap for turning my business model into a functional operation. Specifically, I wanted to refine my marketing systems, streamline operations, and prepare Upside Media to scale efficiently. I aimed to translate strategy into execution, building out a tactical foundation with realistic budgeting, startup costs, and marketing objectives.
2. How the Goal Was Met
The course structure and weekly activities allowed me to systematically address each element of my business plan. From analyzing customer acquisition strategies to generating financial projections, I was able to integrate real data into planning documents. According to Sechaba Mokoena (2021), the SOSTAC is a marketing planning framework, it can be employed by SME to increase sales, expand or broaden market reach. It is a strategic tool for marketing to manage change, risk, opportunities and evaluate capabilities of an organization (para. 1). Key assignments like the SOSTAC Marketing Plan and the Startup Costs Worksheet gave me clarity on where to focus limited resources and how to build sustainable operations from the ground up.
3. What I Learned
This course emphasized the importance of process, iteration, and decision-making based on key metrics. I learned how to navigate real HR considerations, choose between full-time and contract talent, and design a control structure for measuring marketing performance. According to Skye Schooley (2025), when you bring on a contractor, you’re hiring someone with the exact skills needed to tackle a specific task or project. The talent pool is often broad and competitive, which can raise the quality of the final outcome. This can be especially valuable if you need someone with specialized expertise for a technical job (para. 23). I also gained insight into managing risk in early-stage businesses by applying lean decision-making frameworks.
4. How I Will Apply the Material
Professionally, I am already applying the concepts of lean budgeting, milestone-based hiring, and CRM-driven marketing into Upside Media’s workflow. Personally, this course sharpened my discipline in planning and execution. It helped me adopt a 'managerial' lens rather than just an entrepreneurial one. Looking forward, I plan to use the final presentation as part of my pitch deck when approaching local partners and investors in Uganda. The clarity and depth I achieved in this course have positioned me to take Upside Media from an early-stage venture to a structured, scalable brand.
