May 1961. The revelation in 1964 that the Brainiac was actually an android created an additional potential complication for Supergirl's love life. When she joined the Legion of Super-Heroes in 1961, she had met and dated Brainiac 5, who had explained that he was the villain's direct descendant:

The Brainiac retcon in SUPERMAN #167 rationalized this discrepancy by saying that the original android Brainiac briefly had a "son" as part of his disguise, and that Brainiac 5's actual ancestor was the human (well, Coluan) boy forced into the role of "Brainiac II":

Brainiac II didn't get a name in this brief initial appearance, but a 1965 "Meet the Legionnaires" text item in ADVENTURE COMICS #335 gave him the name "Vril Dox" and explained:

Having learned many of Brainiac's scientific secrets, he ran away; then, while his villainous foster-father went off on his espionage mission, which was to occupy many years, Vril used his knowledge to build a brain stimulator which raised his mind to a twelfth-level effector. Now he was smarter than the tyrannous computers and led his people in a revolt against the machines. Honored by the people he had freed, Vril Dox, alias Brainiac II, lived a long, happy life. Long, indeed—for the green-skinned inhabitants of that world have a life-span far greater than that of an Earthman. When he grew up, Vril married and became a father. He found that his brain-stimulator had affected his genes, so that his children inherited his twelfth-level-effector brain. His son Pran Dox, was nicknamed Brainiac 3. He in turn was the father of Kajz Dox (Brainiac 5), whose son, Querl Dox, became Brainiac 5 of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Thus it is that Brainiac 5 has a twelfth-level-effector mind, like the original Brainiac. With a mind twice as powerful as ordinary humans, Brainiac 5 can solve the most difficult problems in seconds.

This text item isn't credited, but it MIGHT have been written by E. Nelson Bridwell, who became Mort Weisinger's assistant editor in 1965. In any event, the name "Vril" was almost certainly borrowed from the 1871 Edward Bulwer-Lytton novel THE COMING RACE, where it refers to an "all-permeating liquid" that works kind of like the Force in STAR WARS. (That novel also fueled all manner of conspiracy theory occultism, and in 1988 was incorporated into DC continuity in Roy Thomas's YOUNG ALL-STARS. A long story.)

The circumstances of Brainiac II's eventual uprising were never directly shown in pre-Crisis comics, but the first three issues of L.E.G.I.O.N. '89 depict his overthrow of what are now called the Computer Tyrants of Colu. The L.E.G.I.O.N. and R.E.B.E.L.S. series also established that Vril Dox was not a nice guy:

The Legion of Super-Heroes villain Pulsar Stargrave, first seen in SUPERBOY #224, claimed at times to be Brainiac 5's father, but he also later claimed to be the original Brainiac, which later developments of the latter character made unlikely. The post-Crisis L.E.G.I.O.N. series reveals that Stargrave was neither, but was in fact an android body housing the minds of the Computer Tyrants of Colu whom Vril Dox and his comrades had previously overthrown. Whether that was true in pre-Crisis continuity is anybody's guess.

Is there anything that appears more inseparable than the love of Childhood sweethearts? Yes, we know with hindsight that the odds are rarely in their favour (although if your forever partner is by your side, more power to you.) Still, you feel that nothing can stop you, not even death. In 1993, the tale of two lovers who deaths couldn’t even break their bond was told in Return of the Living Dead…

Ip Man 3 (2015)

Ip Man 3 may offer the same expertly choreographed martial arts scenes as its predecessors but this movie’s entire front half is worthless. By the time it picks up, it’s too little too late, particularly when you consider the lame antagonists, bad performances and manufactured drama.

In 1959, Ip Man (Donnie Yen) must help the principal of his youngest son’s school. Property developper Frank (Mike Tyson) wants it for the prime real-easte it sits on. His criminal underling, Ma King-sang (Patrick Tam), will stop at nothing - not even arson or kidnapping - to convince the principal (Tats Lau) to sell. Meanwhile, Ip Man’s wife, Cheung Wing-sing (Lynn Hung) receives dire news from her doctor.

You get a bad feeling as soon as you realize they've cast Mike Tyson in the film. The man’s not an actor and even non-English speakers should be able to tell. What purpose does he even serve, except to - once again - introduce some “foreign devil” antagonists for Ip Man to defeat and then shoo away from his home? It certainly isn’t to give us something new, as Tyson is an English-speaking boxer - just like Taylor "The Twister" Miller from Ip Man 2. With his trademark face tattoo and daughter who looks NOTHING like him, it’s like he’s a time traveler.

You could’ve eliminated Frank altogether and only had Ma King-sang as the film’s villain. He’s certainly despicable enough and it might even be a nice change of pace for Ip Man to go up against someone who doesn’t have god-level martial arts skills. Unfortunately, this plot causes only frustration. Ip Man’s son is kidnapped, and not for ransom. Poor little Ip Ching will be sold into slavery unless the principal sells his building. “Alright!” you think to yourself. “These idiots are stupid enough to challenge Ip Man, a martial arts legend who’s saved China’s honor twice already. He’s always been cool, calm, and collected but now, the gloves are off. It’s time for him to go ballistic and teach these monsters a lesson.” but then, he doesn’t. The rescue is undertaken with the same intensity as a no-stakes match between old friends. Our hero doesn’t seem to care, so why should we? It’s a recurring problem with the film. People don’t call the police when witnessing crimes, even if it’s something as blatant and serious as an assassination attempt. I know the police are corrupt (they’re led by a white man, so how could they not be?) but Ip Man’s a respected member of society. He has close friends in the department. You could at least try!

This third chapter in the series isn’t all bad. It’s surprisingly effective when we move away from the school action plot and deal with Ip Man and his wife. There are tender, romantic scenes between them as they spend what could be their last days as husband and wife. Here, the film shows off some good performances. Despite this refreshing storyline, it eventually becomes frustrating as well. Ip Man spends all this time defending the school - his son's school, which is being threatened by ruthless gangsters. He's so dedicated to this cause that Wing-sing begins resenting her husband. She’s worried he won’t be there for her if her illness gets worse. Why she doesn’t just tell him the very important news she got from her doctor, I don’t know. Once they begin spending time together, a second antagonist, another practitioner of Wing Chun called Cheung Tin-chi (Zhang Jin), comes in. On paper, he's a great adversary. He's studied from the same school as Ip Man but applies the technique in different ways and morally, Tin-chi is little more than a glorified thug. Unfortunately, the picture fails to take advantage of these opposing dynamics. See, earlier in the film, Tin-chi accepted money to hospitalize one of Ip Man’s friends. We know he’s rotten but Ip never learns what Tin-chi did! How could writers Edmond Wong, Chan Tai-lee and Jil Leung miss that?!

Ip Man 3 often repeats what we’ve seen before and fails to take advantage of the natural drama that should emerge from its story. Despite some good performances and well-choreographed fights, it’s often tedious and feels phony. With the series once again teasing Bruce Lee but not utilizing him, it feels like they're just releasing more chapters to string us along. (Original Cantonese with English subtitles, June 4, 2021)

Yesterday, President Donald Trump reached back to 1798 for authority to expel five people he claims are members of a Venezuelan gang. Trump invoked the 1798 Alien Enemies Act as the legal basis for the expulsion. The Alien Enemies Act was one of four laws from 1798 that make up the so-called Alien and Sedition Acts.

Federalists in Congress passed the laws during what is known as the “Quasi-War” with France during the French Revolution, when it appeared that members of their political opposition in the U.S. were working to destabilize the U.S. government’s foreign policy of neutrality and overthrow the government so it would side with France in its struggles with Spain and Great Britain.

Their fears were not unfounded. In 1793, the year after French citizens overthrew the French monarchy, Edmond Charles Genêt arrived in the United States to serve as the French minister to the U.S. Immediately, Citizen Genêt ignored U.S. neutrality and began outfitting privateers to prey on British shipping. When the government told him to stop, he threatened to appeal to the American people. More radical French officials replaced Genêt in 1794, although he stayed in the U.S. out of concern for his safety under the new regime in France.

But his threat to appeal to Americans highlighted the growing tension between the party of George Washington and John Adams—the Federalists—and the party of Thomas Jefferson: the Democratic-Republicans (or Jeffersonian Republicans). Democratic-Republicans thought that the Federalists were moving toward monarchy, and they worked to undermine that shift by building ties with the French government to put members of their own party into office. In 1798 a private citizen, George Logan, traveled to France to negotiate with the government for policies that would strengthen the hands of the Democratic-Republicans at home.

It’s from Logan’s attempt that we got the Logan Act, which prohibits private citizens from “directly or indirectly” working with a foreign government to influence either the foreign government or the U.S. government. This is one of the laws Trump’s national security advisor Mike Flynn likely ran afoul of after the 2016 election when, as a private citizen, he talked to Russian operatives about Trump’s plans to change U.S. foreign policy once he was in office.

In addition to the Logan Act, Federalists in Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, including the Alien Enemies Act. That law, which applies during wartime or when a foreign government threatens an “invasion” or “predatory incursion,” permits the president to authorize the arrest, imprisonment, or deportation of people older than 14 who come from a foreign enemy country. President James Madison used the law to arrest British nationals during the War of 1812, President Woodrow Wilson invoked it against Germans during World War I, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt used it against Japanese, Italian, and German noncitizens.

During the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump said he would use the Alien Enemies Act to deport gang members, and in an executive order signed Friday night but released yesterday morning after news of it leaked, Trump claimed that thousands of members of the Tren de Aragua gang have “unlawfully infiltrated the United States and are conducting irregular warfare and undertaking hostile actions against the United States.” In connection with the Venezuelan government, he said, the gang has made incursions into the U.S. with the goal of “destabilizing democratic nations in the Americas, including the United States.”

Marc Caputo of Axios reported that White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristy Noem orchestrated the weekend’s events. Caputo explained that after news of the executive order leaked, an immigration activist who tracks deportation flights posted on social media at 2:31 p.m. that “TWO HIGHLY UNUSUAL I[mmigration and] C[ustoms] E[nforcement] flights” were leaving Texas on a flight path to El Salvador.

The administration was deporting more than 200 men it claimed were members of the Tren de Aragua gang and sending them to El Salvador, where President Nayib Bukele had agreed to accept prisoners from the U.S. for “a very low fee.” Tim Sullivan and Elliot Spagat of the Associated Press report that the administration agreed to pay El Salvador $6 million to imprison about 300 men for a year.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Democracy Forward promptly filed a lawsuit warning that Trump would be using the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans in the country as gang members, regardless of whether there was any evidence of their gang membership and regardless of whether Venezuela is truly trying to invade the United States. The suit asked a federal court to issue a temporary restraining order to prevent the deportation of five Venezuelans in federal custody who believed they were about to be deported. At least one of the men said he wasn’t a member of the gang.

Judge James E. Boasberg, chief judge of the D.C. Circuit, issued a temporary restraining order stopping the government from deporting the five men. The administration promptly appealed, and the ACLU asked the judge to expand the order to cover all migrants who could fall under Trump’s executive order.

Ryan Goodman of Just Security put together the timeline of what came next. At 5:00 last night, Judge Boasberg asked whether deportations would happen in the next 24–48 hours. The government’s attorney said he didn’t know; the ACLU attorney said the government was moving rapidly. Before 5:22, Boasberg ordered a break so the government attorney could obtain official information before the hearing resumed at 6:00.

At 5:45, Goodman reports, another flight took off.

Before 6:52, Judge Boasberg agreed with the ACLU that the terms of the Alien Enemies Act apply only to “enemy nations,” and blocked deportations under it. Nnamdi Egwuonwu and Gary Grumbach of NBC News reported that the judge ordered the administration to return the planes in flight to the United States. “Any plane containing these folks that is going to take off, or is in the air, needs to be returned to the United States,” the judge said. “Those people need to be returned to the United States.”

Caputo reports that White House officials discussed whether to order the planes, which were then off the Yucatan Peninsula, to turn around but chose not to.

At 8:02, Goodman reports, more than an hour past the judge’s order to recall the planes, a flight arrived in El Salvador.

Last night, El Salvador’s president reposted an article explaining that a federal judge had ordered the planes to return to the U.S., adding the comment: “Oopsie… Too late,” with a laughing emoji. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reposted it.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Caputo, “If the Democrats want to argue in favor of turning a plane full of rapists, murderers, and gangsters back to the United States, that's a fight we are more than happy to take.” But while the administration would like to make this crisis about the alleged behavior of the men they deported, it is really about the rule of law in the United States.

As law professor Steve Vladeck explains, the administration is asserting that Trump himself can determine that the country is at war although it obviously isn’t, an assertion that Tim Balk of the New York Times notes would give Trump the power to arrest, detain, and deport all migrants over the age of 14 without due process, as he determined who is a gang member without due process. We have no evidence that the men deported were gang members, and now they have vanished.

In addition, the administration appears to have violated the orders of the court. As legal analyst Harry Litman wrote: “The table is set for the most direct showdown of Trump and the courts to date. Administration admits today that 100s of supposed gang members were deported w/ no process. chief judge of district court Jeb Boasberg had ordered them not to do it and to return any planes that had been sent.”

Legal commentator Joyce White Vance added that although there will be fights over who did what, when, the case will be headed to the Supreme Court, where Trump will hope for a decision “that says he can do these deportations regardless of other legal issues, because he is the president, and the president has the power to do whatever he deems necessary under Article II of the Constitution.” She adds:” If presidents can do whatever they want, including putting people on a plane and sending them to prisons in a foreign country with no due process whatsoever, then really, who are we?”

Trump’s erosion of the rule of law has been speeding up since he took office. On March 6 he began to target lawyers when he signed an executive order designed to put the Perkins Coie law firm, which often represents Democratic politicians and organizations, out of business. After a judge blocked his order harassing Perkins Coie, Trump followed it with attacks on the Paul, Weiss law firm, and then on Covington.

On Friday, Trump appeared at the Department of Justice, the arm of government charged with protecting the equal protection of the laws, where he said those who challenge his actions are “horrible people. They are scum.” The president of the United States identified lawyers he dislikes by name from the Department of Justice, an astonishing attempt to undermine the rule of law by endangering particular individuals who would protect it.

“We are inevitably headed,” Vance wrote, “to a confrontation between a president who has rejected the rule of law and a judge sworn to enforce it. We are in an exceedingly dangerous moment for democracy.”

In Common Sense, when he made the argument against monarchy that would drive the colonists to create their own new form of government, Thomas Paine warned his neighbors that without the rule of law, the country belongs to a king. He urged them to turn away from a world that gave one man such absolute power. “[S]o far as we approve of monarchy,” he wrote, “in America the law is King. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be King; and there ought to be no other.”

Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club held its championship today. He posted tonight that he is proud to have won it again this year.

Here's a crossover nobody asked for, but has wormed its way into my head and won't leave: Good Omens × The Magnus Archives.

To clarify, not characters taken from one and put in the other's setting, both characters and settings put together in a weird soup.

I know the crossover doesn't make any sense, but the thought of the Them and the NotThem existing in the same universe greatly amuses me.

Further ramblings below the cut.

I've been debating between the Fears being an invention of Hell that has gone out of control and them being completely unrelated, outside beings with a power level closer to God, I feel like the first option diminishes their status a bit, but it is funnier. Maybe there could be a connection between them and the four riders of the apocalypse?

I want there to be a concrete divide between the divine/occult and eldritch, so that it's not just Hell's horror department and Angels and Demons are separate from monsters and avatars. But in universe not a lot of people know about the existence of either (aside from faith of course, which isn't the same as knowledge), so the ones that do encounter them have little to no basis for telling them apart. Also the Fears have a more active presence on Earth, so Angels and Demons often get mistaken for avatars by those in the know about the Fears.

The broad strokes of both narratives stay the same, so the GO apocalypse is prevented, but then TMA eyepocalypse happens and GO's characters are really salty about it. The eyepocalypse doesn't trigger a war between Heaven and Hell because of a legal loophole.

Tadfield is completely immune to the influence of all the fears because of Adam's powers, like Salesa's safehouse during the eyepocalypse or like how Aziraphale and Crowley hid Gabriel from Heaven and Hell with a miracle. Aziraphale's bookshop and the building with elevators to Heaven and Hell are the same in that aspect due to the concentration of divine/occult energy. This also applies during the eyepocalypse.

Aziraphale is Jurgen Leitner's biggest hater. He drunkenly made the Jurgen Leitner rant™ in universe while Crowley was cackling and wheezing on the floor. He's been "in correspondence" with Jonah Magnus 200 years ago and is the reason Jonah got obsessed with immortality in the first place. They first met each other at a discreet gentlemen's book club. Aziraphale deeply regrets ever talking to him. He had to fight off Mike Crew with a broom, when he was still looking for a Leitner to call his own. People in the know about the Fears, but not the existance of Angels and Demons assume Aziraphale to be an avatar of the Eye, possibly another Archivist.

Crowley's assumed to be an avatar too, but noone can agree what fear he serves. For a time Desolation was a popular theory, which he hated. Now they lean more toward the Web, the Stranger or the Spiral. He knew Maxwell Rayner back when he was Edmond Halley, because they were both in the astronomy circles at the time. A lot of the things he takes credit for on his reports to Hell are actually the doing of Fear avatars, it works out, because Hell refuses to acknowledge the Fears as a point of pride and noone bothers to check.

Gertrude thought about blowing up the bookshop, but Aziraphale convinced her otherwise. They had tea.

Jared Hopworth called Aziraphale a slur once and had to promptly change career paths.

Jon and Martin passed through Tadfield at some point during the eyepocalypse and met Adam. It was kind of awkward, but they got to pet Dog.

Agnes Nutter wasn't an avatar, she was just like that. Her prophecies mostly didn't concern the Fears, aside from telling one of her descendants not to go to the hundred and fifth house on a road atop a hill.

Anathema and Newt stay as far away from the Fears as possible, especially after Newt's encounter with Sergey Ushanka (Newt accidentally deleted him).

Everyone thinks Shadwell and Tracy are avatars, of the Hunt and the End respectively. They're not. They're just scammers. Tracy likes that it makes her seem more legitimate. Shadwell doesn't like the Fears, but he doesn't count them as witchcraft (except for the Flesh, because nipples, obviously), so he doesn't really care.

Nina and Maggie on the other hand are avatars. They're pretty good at hiding it though. Not sure which ones, probably the End and the Vast. Nina's ex is an avatar of Corruption.
