Released 55 years ago today (24 June 1970): the infamous film adaptation of Gore Vidal’s 1968 best-seller Myra Breckinridge, memorably described by Vanity Fair as a “celluloid disasterpiece” and derided by Time magazine as “about as funny as a child molester … so tasteless, it represents some sort of nadir in the history of American cinema". Quick thoughts on this “what-were-they-thinking?” mega-flop! Leading lady Raquel Welch’s stilted, wooden acting is actually ideal in this context (as director Mike Sarne put it, “She has a marvelously artificial way of acting”). She looks sensational in Myra’s glamorous 1940s wardrobe (designed by Theadora Van Runkle, who’d costumed Faye Dunaway in Bonnie & Clyde and The Thomas Crown Affair). In the close-ups, you can see the extreme, almost drag queen-like contouring on Welch’s face. Majestic 76-year-old Mae West - in her first film appearance since 1943 - gets lead billing but in fact has a supporting role. West’s sequences as Letitia Van Allen (virtually nothing like the character in Vidal’s book) make no sense: she just periodically and inexplicably crashes the action, suggestively purring her lines and stealing her scenes (and does two musical number out of nowhere) but who cares when she’s such fun?  Myra hit the cinemas at the same time as Russ Meyer’s magnum opus Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Both were rated X and were often linked in the media as representative of the new borderline-pornographic permissiveness in films – but Beyond is beautifully executed and genuinely anarchic whereas Myra is mostly just inept! 29-year-old neophyte director Sarne was reportedly a homophobe and queasy about the film’s subject matter – which couldn’t have helped! The failure of Myra killed his initially promising filmmaking career. It’s trippy seeing TV icons Farah Fawcett and Tom Selleck (pre-moustache) in small roles when they were still young unknowns. John Huston here is a benign version of the corrupt old lecher he plays in Chinatown. Transgender Warhol superstar Candy Darling campaigned hard to portray Myra – what would that have been like? Finally, in 2001 Vanity Fair ran an epic account of Myra Breckinridge’s fraught, jinxed production. It’s essential reading!

Week ending: 6th June

Has there been a more grittily British week in a while? I don't know, but looking at today's line-up, we do seem to be on a bit of a low-rent, local kick, with a Liverpool lad, a propah Londoner and then Eden Kane, who just feels kind of rough and roguish, somehow. It's a lineup that's not without its charms, but they're distinctly home-grown charms, far from the glitz and glamour of, say, New York.

Last Night Was Made for Love - Billy Fury (peaked at Number 4)

This is a properly dramatic track, a big, bombastic tango that suits Billy, with his increasingly theatrical, showy style. I think I said last time we heard from him that he seemed to be going for more Bobby Darin-style swing, and this, while it isn't quite swing, feels similar, a stompy, grandstanding thing that bursts in with a rush of tumbling strings, a blast of brass, and some heavy use of timpani. There's not much subtlety here - and Billy doesn't tone it down much, as the track wears on, either.

Lyrically, it's a song that seems to take a bit of a U-turn halfway through. At the start, it sets you up to think that Billy's happily in love, with lines about how last night a million stars / Smiled down on me / Soft breezes kissed my cheek / So tenderly. He goes on to describe it as one magic night, when dreams came true. Surely, this is all set-up to reveal that Billy was with his lover, that they spent the night together. But no, here comes the kicker. Last night was made for love, he sings, dropping the title line, but where were you? The night was perfect, sure, but Billy's love didn't turn up. It's a melancholy sort of turn, a sad twist, and Billy then spends the back half of the song speculating about them being in another man's arms, and regrets that there won't be another night like it, it's gone forever, sad but true. Which is honestly kind of relatable. Who hasn't missed opportunities, and known they wouldn't get the change again, and felt sad about it? Romantic or not, it sucks, and I feel for Billy, here. I do also like that it keeps the details of exactly what actually went down quite vague. Is this somebody Billy was supposed to be meeting who stood him up? Is it somebody he simply has a crush on and regrets isn't there with him? In some ways it doesn't matter, and keeping it vague lets you project whatever you like onto it.

It's also a small thing, but I appreciate the way that Billy puts a bit of a moan into his lines, in the final verse, the one about the regrets. He generally doesn't sound super emotional in the song, sticking to a more neutral delivery - which is part of the reason why the twist works! - but at this point, once we know that things haven't worked out with him and his lover, he lets a bit of pain seep into his voice, a bit of weakness. It's effective, as is the angry growl he lets creep in, while singing about his love potentially seeking comfort in another man's arms. It all adds a bit more emotional depth to the song, right at the point where you might otherwise start tuning out. And like I said, it's subtle enough that it doesn't feel ridiculous or out of place. Poor Billy.

Come Outside - Mike Sarne & Wendy Richard (1)

And fresh from Billy's regret, we've got quite a different song, one that transports us to a much more specific, concrete setting, and one that feels very real - a London dance hall, where Mike is on a date with Wendy. We've got a vaguely rock and roll-sounding backing, drums, guitars, backing singers echoing in from afar, as Mike sets up the main conflict of the song. Namely, it's getting towards the time when he told Wendy he'd get her home to her dad. He'd like to head outside and - presumably - snog for a bit. But she's way too taken by the music, and just wants to dance the night away, leaving Mike frustrated.

All this plays out in a broadly comedic music hall fashion, with Mike trying out all his most persuasive lines, first trying to convince Wendy that it ain't right to wanna keep on dancing/ There won't be any time left for romancing, then assuring her that there's a lovely moon out there, and trying to guilt her into it, reminding her that little doll, it seems ages since we kissed. This is broadly amusing, I guess, and would have been the whole point of the song, had Wendy not been working in the recording studio as a secretary, at this point. As Mike was recording, she reportedly kept throwing in little comments and asides, giving the girl's side of things, and the record execs liked it enough that they insisted on keeping it in the actual recording. Hence the whole second half of the song, where every one of Mike's lines gets rebuffed by an increasingly petulant (and very Cockney) sounding Wendy. Come outside, he implores her. What for? she asks. What's the rush? she continues, as he presses her, It's cold outside! Still, he insists, but Wendy wants to do another Twist. Get lost, she cries, sounding genuinely annoyed, go and ask Lil! The romance of it - or rather, the total lack of romance - is great, I love it. Though I have to wonder what Wendy sees in Mike. He really doesn't seem to be able to take a hint, here.

I will say, the final minute or so of the song does then outstay its welcome a bit. The whole "Mike keeps trying to persuade Wendy and she isn't really into it" shtick is funny, but it starts feeling a bit uncomfortable once you're getting to vaguely menacing lines from Mike about how I'm a-getting kinda mad, shortly followed by Wendy telling him to give over, to lay off and to shop shoving, both of which take the song into "straight up yikes" territory, and would spoil it entirely, if it weren't for the fact that I suspect Wendy is giving back as good as she gets. Hence the best line of the whole thing, where Mike, gross man that he apparently is, suggests that we've got time for a bit of slap and tickle, and Wendy suggests that I'll slap and tickle you in a minute. Which is a delightfully feisty line that I'm honestly kind of charmed by. I still feel sorry for Wendy, but at least I know she's standing up for herself.

The songwriters also do seem to realise, right at the end, that they've written Mike into an unlikeable corner, and try to salvage it with some dialogue in the final lines where Wendy relents, conceding that she'll go with Mike, but not for too long, giggling with him about how he needs a shave and reminding him that she needs to go in five minutes. See, it seems to try to say, he's not that bad. She likes him really. She does. Except for my money, it's the weakest bit of the song, and makes me like both Mike and Wendy much less - Wendy turns into this giggling pushover, and Mike remains unsympathetic, except he's apparently now learnt the lesson that if he pesters his girl enough, she'll let him paw her around outside the dance hall, a bit. Gross, and not as romantic as the song seems to think it is.

I Don't Know Why - Eden Kane (7)

And then, lurching out the night, with a proper rasp to his voice, it's Eden, pulling honestly a trick that's not entirely dissimilar to Billy, a British, slightly growly rock and roll update of an old swing classic, initially released in 1931. There's something distinctly gritty about Eden's version, though. I don't know if it's his voice, or the way that the instrumental backing and Eden's vocals are all slightly echoey, or the heavy brass instrument they've chosen to include, or even just the way that the whole thing jolts slightly drunkenly to life, at points. It's a waltz, and waltzes always have the potential to sound kind of tipsy, at least to me, but this really sounds like Eden's just stumbled out Mike and Wendy's dance hall, slightly the worse for wear.

It's a heartfelt, straightforwardly romantic song, but like Billy, Eden's not happy in love. I don't know why I love you like I do, he sings, and I don't know why you thrill me like you do. He loves this person, sure, but he doesn't know why. It certainly isn't because they reciprocate his love. You never seem to want my romancing, he sings, all matter of fact, the only time you hold me is when we're dancing. Which, now I type it, seems like the same issue Mike had, back in the last song. Eden's love seems entirely disinterested in him. And yet, he can't escape his inexplicable but undeniable attraction to them. And so, he promises, desperately, futilely, that I'll hug you, and I'll kiss you, what more do you want me to do? It's a gloriously big, dramatic, anguished conclusion to a big, dramatic, anguished song, and the edge to Eden's voice really sells me on the emotion and urgency of it all.

I also just think it's neat how this is still quite clearly the sort of swing song that you could put out in the 1930s, but updated to fit into 1962's musical landscape. We've got vague, romantic lyrics, a big, sweeping melody, big band brass flourishes galore. But it's all been given a rasp and a growl, plus some shimmery, Shadows-esque guitar, played over a spoken word section that wouldn't be out of place in an Elvis track. It's short - as all the best spoken word sections are - and actually is delivered quite neutrally, in a nice contrast to the high emotion of all the rest of his lines.

I didn't hate any of these songs, though Mike did properly get on my wick by the end of his. Like I said, though, I'd have been harsher on him if Wendy hadn't won me over with her bolshy feistiness. I think she can stand up for herself, you know? She doesn't need me doing it for her. Also, I did appreciate that the dance hall setting gave me a nice mental setting for the other two songs, this week - both of them felt similar, marrying a sort of jazzy, swinging grandeur with productions that are just a little less slick and glossy than their American counterparts, a little more honest. They're songs about anguish and disappointment in love, and they feel realistic, the sort of thing you might put on the soundtrack to a gritty social realist drama set in 1962. Perhaps after a dance date that didn't go so well.
