I wanna read a whole spin-off novel just about the voyage on the “Demeter.” The horror of your friends and fellow sailors somehow going completely missing when you’re on a ship in the middle of the ocean? Superstition and reality blending together? Everyone suspecting everyone else and not realizing the threat is worse than they could have ever imagined? Hell yeah.

I had written asking him if he had heard, and he said the enclosed had just been received. It is only a line dated from Castle Dracula, and says that he is just starting for home. That is not like Jonathan; I do not understand it, and it makes me uneasy.

By now it has been established that Mina has a good control of her emotions up to the point of minding what she writes in her personal journal, but this part of her expressing how she doesn't understand the letter is like the screeching and failing note of a violin.

After not receiving any kind of information from Jonathan for months, after not hearing anything and finally asking for a sign of communication, Mina finally has something from Jonathan... And it's one line "written" by him, but it's not him at all.

Mina says that the fake letter makes her uneasy and that she doesn't understand it, but it almost reads as the only words she forced herself to use for her own behalf. Maybe it's the slow building of terror inside her mind the more she tries to calm herself; maybe it's the sudden terrifying connection of the facts that she has, and how this is fake line that is supposed to prove that Jonathan is in fact still alive plays into them.

I love how Mina wants to learn about whaling from decades ago from a local old sailor (Mr Swales). She'd have loved listening to Ishmael Mobydick and writing down all the infodumping.

I know she said her diary is an exercise in shorthand and journalism to be a useful partner to Jonathan's work. Still, she's clearly full of energy to explore (running up the 199 steps to the graveyard instead of resting from her trip) and hungry for learning new things that are completely unrelated to Jonathan's job.

And, Jonathan said his journal's purpose is "to discuss my travels with Mina," like the Transylvanian historical and ethnographic facts, so she's not the only one focusing on the other.

It actually meant so much to me to see the original Mina/Jonathan dynamic honoured in Nosferatu (2024). The way they loved each other so much, did everything for the other, clung to each other in the face of the Count's individual assaults upon them...I'm so used to seeing adaptations take this actually really great couple and tossing them into a blender for the sake of propping up the Count's character and his *not book accurate* relationship with Mina. I was so worried going into this movie I'd been hyping up since the beginning that it would fall into the same trap, and it soothed my fears immediately. The only straight couple ever in my eyes <3
