The World’s Greatest and Most Popular Teenaged Magician… Wasn’t a teenager anymore. It hadn’t really crossed Zach’s mind given the madness that was currently his life but it was true. His 20th Birthday had come and gone with little fuss; it wasn’t like he had enough people close to him for parties. But his legions of loyal fans had posted their own tributes with many asking about his stage name as well. He and his publicist had finally had a chance to meet and go over it, Helen had seemed ready to chew him out but was surprisingly gentle through the meeting; he didn’t want to think about how bad he must’ve looked to garner that response. They’d spent yesterday morning discussing it and eventually came to a decision. She’d been quick to suggest The Great Zatara but Zachary had quickly vetoed that; it had been Uncle Vanni’s stage name and would remain his, even in death. His Uncle had left behind a hole in the world no one could fill and he wasn’t about to try. In the end he’d had to make a choice: try something completely new and forgo the family name or accept that if he kept it, he’d likely forever had the shadow of his Cousin and Uncle outdoing him…

Zatara The Second

He supposed it fit him. Born from the second-born son, second born of the second generation; the circumstances of his birth and the career that followed had been a perpetual silver medal. It was something he’d rallied against so hard when he’d started out, making sure he was known as ‘the best’ in his own little slice of the business but, that wasn’t slice anymore. He’d grown up. Maybe a part of growing up had been accepting that he would always be second best. As much as he couldn’t accept what Zatanna had done, what she’d taken from him, she was The Mistress of Magic and she ruled the stage, nothing he did was going to change that. He’d never be his Uncle of his Cousin, but he couldn’t quite let either of them go either. The Zatara name was for them, not for his parents, never for them.

Helen, rather unaware of the personal revelations that had gone into his new stage name, was quick to suggest a new look to go with the rebranding. He’d been about to turn her down but the idea did strike a small cord in him. Ever since he’d done shows he’d worn a tuxedo to perform in every time. It was what his Uncle and Cousin wore, so he wore it too but… Even if he was keeping the name, did he need to still follow their footsteps? (He supposed he unintentionally had with his Uncle, dying to fix a mess even if he’d made it). But he didn’t want to be them, not anymore. He wasn’t a hero, or certainly never going to be one like them. Perhaps trying to be more himself should start on the outside? Various gods knows that was easier for him to handle. So, he’d agreed.

Sexy. That had been his publicist’s advice. She bluntly said she’d considered it in his younger years but felt he wasn’t there yet, apparently now he’d ‘lost all the baby fat’ it was time to capitalise on the years he’d put into his body and show it off. She’d called in a few designers, even a personal shopper and they’d spent the rest of the afternoon putting some ideas together and pulling from every shop in Star City and beyond. Then he’d been dumped into a stylist’s chair who complained about his hair being neglected (again he was well aware but didn’t want to talk about the multitude of reasons he’d let his fashion sense go) before setting to work. The finished result was, well… he couldn’t say he minded. His hair had always been on the shorter side, clean cut and artfully gelled up. It was too long for that still and some of its natural waviness had begun to come through. The longest ends tickled the bottom of his neck and a fringe tumbled forwards, some strands brushing the tip of his nose, he kept wanting to blow it out of the way and every time he tried, he got a sharp tap on the shoulder from the stylist. He caught a look at himself in the mirror and had to admit, he kind of liked it, the jet-black hair brought out the deep dark purple of his eyes and it made him look young without looking like, well a teenager.

He’d always thought leather pants belonged in biker bars or in an S&M evening, but the faux leather, as the designer had assured him they were, pants looked pretty decent, they weren’t overly shiny and slide over his legs like butter, fastening with a zip-fly and two buttons. He tested them, lifting a leg up, squatting in place (there was no attractive way to test the give in pants) and they held up well. Plus, he had to admit, they hugged his legs in all the right places, leaving little about his thighs and ass to the imagination. The pants were paired with vintage distressed leather boots that managed to look chaotic and a little messy while being brand new and had a satisfying click in the heel with every step he took; they were a little heavy but he’d get used to them.

Not wanting anything too complex on top, they’d decided on a very tight black muscle t-shirt which (like the pants) left little of his arms, chest and stomach to the imagination. He’d spent years working out to look good, never for his health or to aid in the few hero skirmishes he’d been in (though those had been useful side effects). It had always been about looking good. He remembered Zatanna would walk into a room and everyone would stop to look at her, she was beautiful but it wasn’t just that. She had an aura to her, something extra special that Zach was pretty sure he’d never had and couldn’t be taught. Sure, people looked at him when he came out, but only his fans. Anyone would look at Zatanna. The more he thought about it, the more he considered the various ways his cousin had dressed, even outside of her signature performance outfit she’d always had something linking it back to tradition. Whether it was her look or a sign of respect he wasn’t sure but it was something he realised he wanted to. Zach had already decided he didn’t want to emulate his Cousin and Uncle as hard as he’d clearly been trying in the past but, as his new stage name proved, he wasn’t letting go completely either. So he’d taken the designer aside and pitched an idea, eventually managing to find something suitable they added it to his look and it was just what he’d been missing.

Zatanna wore a corset well, very well but this wasn’t anything so fancy. The material was stretchy, coloured a deep purple that matched the black surrounding it, and was laced tightly up the back, showing off the slight curve of his trim waist and widening a little as it reached just below his pectorals. It was a touch of something different, something magic.

Accessories were easy enough. He a pair of black leather fingerless gloves and pulled them on and, after a little debate, decided that he might as well throw in one more risk and got a single ear pierced twice, once at the bottom of his lobe and another just above it. From the higher one he hung pinned a small silver stud and in the lower one a dangling earring with a small white gemstone hanging from it. Not only for aesthetic, this was something practical. Uncle Vanni always told him a magician had one final trick up his sleeve. Well, Zach didn’t have sleeves anymore so why not have a trick pinned to his ear? The small gem would produce a portal when crushed that would lead him back to his apartment in the city, though he didn’t tell anyone else this, only that the stone was important to him and they’d let it go. From there, he was done. Looking in the mirror before his first photoshoot he struggled a little. He was so… different. He’d spent so long trying to be ‘the best’ and a Zatara that he’d never really stopped and thought about what he really was or what he really wanted to look like. Yes, he looked very different, he felt different, but he also felt like himself. The fact that ‘himself’ was different was something that needed focusing on but he’d decided on fixing the outside first. The inside was way too much to consider.

He took a breath and went to the shoot then followed it up with an interview. The next weeks several magazines in the city had his photoshoot in them along with a brief talk with ‘Zatara The Second’ detailing the changes to his name and look. Maybe it wouldn’t go down well with everyone but… he liked it. And it was a first step for him. Maybe the next would be easier.

Unknown Feelings…

Bart would admit he didn’t know what he was so nervous about. It was just Jaime, Jaime Reyes!

Okay, it was because it was Jaime Reyes that he was… mode. Jaime with his dark eyes, that black hair, handsome face, and dreamy eyes. So dreamy! Bart didn’t even know what dreamy was but since hearing Zachary Zatara describe Raven as ‘dreamy’ Bart had to admit that it worked well for describing Jaime.

Not that Bart was ever going to be stupid enough to say ‘dreamy’ aloud. Zach had when Raven walked by in her mini-shorts, and her guard had heard it. Yeah, Bart had learnt yet another lesson as Jason Todd had kicked Zach’s ass, publicly, openly, and in front of all of them for calling Raven ‘dreamy’. Apparently, it was inappropriate, and Raven hadn’t even heard the comment.

It also didn’t help that his grandmother had clarified what a crush was. Further debilitating Bart as there was a name for the weird affliction he felt whenever in the presence of one Jaime Reyes.

Bart had been secretly concerned that he was dying, or something, or that Jaime was a disease. A terrifying thought, which had been put to rest by his grandmother. Iris had clarified what crushes were and since then Bart was hopeless with Jaime.

But that brought him to today as he nervously walked through the El Paso mall with Jaime, and his sister Milagro.

It wasn’t exactly a break from the Titans, but the Titans weren’t parents nor were they a school, and Jaime’s civilian friends had invited him to the Winter Formal, which Bart had no idea was about, and Jaime in turn had invited him. Iris had insisted he go, saying that Central City would still be there, and she didn’t need him, and that the whole Flash family would be there for the holidays, and he needed to hang out with kids his age, as she ushered him out of the house. Bart didn’t get what that was about, but Jay and Joan had also insisted that he go to this Winter Formal.

So here Bart was, in El Paso, Texas, which had only been a thirty minute run from Central City, Missouri.

“This is a waste of time, sis,” Jaime whined.

“You’re going to the Winter Formal, you need tuxes!” Milagro snapped.

“You’re not going,” Jaime pointed out as he ruffled his little sister’s hair only for her to swat him back.

“That’s not the point!” she snapped, Bart thought it comical as Milagro was so small. She was a fiery tempered, slightly spoiled, a bit bratty girl, but he thought her entertaining all the same.

“What’s a tux?” he whispered to Jaime.

“Cruel and unusual punishment,” was Jaime’s answer. The bug chirped a bit, Bart assumed in agreement.

“Idon’tneedatux!” he blurted out then. He’d had enough cruel and unusual punishment.

“Hermano, you need one for a Winter Formal,” Jaime replied softly.

“But…!” he started only for Milagro to grab his wrist and Jaime as she dragged them along.

Jaime had decided to take Bart with him from the Winter Formal, as the future apparently doesn’t have Winter Formals.

Bart was kind of weird. But hey, Jaime had met weirder. His Titans Team Captain was an interdimensional demon, her brother was a giant cyborg, her father was imprisoned in a gem on her brow, and she had all the Bats on her speed dial. And that was just his Team Captain. Do Not Get Him Started On His Teammates!

So, in terms of weirdness he didn’t think Bart was horribly out of character. Just an odd one. One who wasn’t making many friends.

Bart was pretty cool though. Energetic, excited and happy, also never ceasing curiosity, and this… distance. Jaime just wanted Bart to feel at home in this era, and he clearly wasn’t. Despite everything that though, Bart always seemed lonely. Jaime didn’t get that. Bart was the friendliest people he had ever met.

Also, Bart had these eyes, pure gold, Jaime liked looking at them and felt he could watch them for hours. His auburn companion never sat still long enough for him to make a fool of himself though. Gracias a dios!

Jaime was a bit worried, he had a tendency to get distracted whenever Bart was involved, and he really liked Bart. Like really liked.

He was well aware of HOW he liked Bart, he just didn’t really know what to do about it as Bart was the best friend he had ever had. And Jaime was keen on embarrassing himself with admitting he had a crush on Bart when Bart probably thought he was just a friend. Besides that, Jaime wasn’t sure he wanted to have that talk with his parents.

Ever.

Jaime was perfectly content leaving his feelings for Bart alone.

Even as his brat sister dragged them through the mall for the men’s clothing store for tuxes.

“You two do not get to ruin this by not dressing up!” Milagro snapped.

“Fine! Fine! Deja de tirar!” he snapped pulling from her grasp.

Milagro stuck her tongue out.

“Are sisters always this pushy?” Bart sighed.

“Don’t you have a sister?”

“No,” Bart grimaced. Jaime felt like kicking himself as if he had just stepped into a mess he didn’t know about. “But that’s okay!”

“You’re cool Bart, I like you,” Milagro decided as they walked into the store. Jaime and the bug weren’t happy about the arrival which had Jaime groaning. “And you’re totally coming to my Quinceañera.”

“What’s a Quinceañera?” Bart asked.

Milagro giggled hysterically as she walked off.

“It’s her fifteenth birthday party,” Jaime filled in.

“Oh, crash,” Bart grinned. Jaime felt a bit of heat rising to his cheeks as he looked away and started looking at the shirts and jackets.

“You’ll come,” Jaime said. It wasn’t really a question.

“Yeah, sounds crash,” Bart decided.

“Cool,” Jaime smiled as he looked over at Milagro walking towards them with shirts.

Mini Mansions – GummyBear

Si le nom Mini Mansions ne vous dit rien, vous avez forcément entendu au moins un des trois membres quelque part : constitué de Michael Shuman (actuel bassiste des Queens of the Stone Age), de Zach Dawes (bassiste de tournée pour les Last Shadow Puppets) et Tyler Parkford (un des multiples claviéristes présents sur la dernière tournée des Arctic Monkeys), le groupe, qui parvient miraculeusement à faire coïncider son emploi du temps, fait à nouveau marcher sa magie avec le très pop « GummyBear », aux gimmicks de production qui vous rappelleront forcément au moins un des autres groupes précités.

Weyes Blood – Everyday

Après avoir accompagné Ariel Pink et Drugdealer (entre autres), Weyes Blood (de son vrai nom Natalie Mering) établit un grand pont entre sa Californie natale et la bonne pop made in UK, empruntant avec aisance aussi bien aux Beach Boys qu’à Kate Bush. Son album, Titanic Rising (on aime déjà le titre), débarque le 5 avril prochain.

Of all the San Diego wedding DJs calling America’s finest city home, Karla & Brandon chose me to DJ and MC their Bali Hai wedding (South Pacific Room) on June 15, 2019. The following write-up is based on San Diego DJ Staci’s crazy organized & detailed outline for this Bali Hai Restaurant wedding.

2. Danger Zone – Kenny Loggins ➔ “Brandon met this groomsman at Navy boot camp in 2013. He is known on the golf course as & Shank-Opotamus & and has yet to beat Brandon in a single round. Karla met this bridesmaid during their first year of high school. They were later roommates in college. Aztecs for life! She would still be in California if Joe had not stolen her away! Show some love to Groomsman/Padrino Alex & Bridesmaid/Dama Laura!!!”

3. Walking on sunshine – Katrina & The Waves ➔ “This groomsman met Brandon during his first year in the Navy. They were roommates together for two years in Washington D.C. Brandon has never beaten him on the golf course. Several years ago, this bridesmaid was looking for a roommate on Craigslist–yep–and found her soul twin, Karla. Please welcome Groomsman/Padrino Zach & Bridesmaid/Dama Ny-Vee!!!”

4. Uptown Funk – Bruno Mars ➔ “Brandon met him many years ago while playing ice hockey. We”ll see if he can dance tonight, considering he shattered his what bone 4 months ago. Karla is proudly related to the next bridesmaid. She is a total bad ass, a world traveler, a star dancer and she just got accepted into Georgetown University for a Masters in Nursing! Brace yourself Washington, D.C.! Give it up for Groomsman/Padrino Branden & Bridesmaid/Dama Melissa!!!”

5. Shut up and Dance – Walk the Moon ➔ “He the groom go back 26 years and share the same parents—oh snap! Brandon taught him how to skate, golf, and be awesome. Karla and this bridesmaid have been friends since high school. She has a country soul with a city girl drive. From LA to New York to Michigan, their friendship will be strong no matter where they go. Initially, he didn & like Brandon, in fact, he probably still doesn & but all it took was a case of bud light to get him to be the Best Man today. Karla and the Maid of Honor share the same dad, but they became true sisters in 2013. They are forever opposites but forever inseparable. They were spending a lovely day at the winery, and Brandon had mentioned that he had a gift for her but had forgotten it. Later that afternoon, Brandon asked a waiter to snap a photo of them. As they were posing for the photo, Brandon said, & Remember I had a gift for you? & and he pulled a ring box out of his pocket. The waiter snapped the pic as Brandon asked her a very important question. I think we know how she answered because we are about to Mr. and Mrs. S—– to the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife. Markelle Fultz pone el broche a los Sixers Fultz había ganado la carrera en las últimas semanas para tener el honor de ser número 1, y el intercambio de su derecho de elección de Celtics a Philadelphia lo confirmaba. Tatum, alero de la universidad de Duke, es para muchos analistas el jugador más hecho de este Draft, una máquina de tirar con un físico también bueno, ideal para un puesto de tres muy valorado en los Celtis desde siempre y donde aunque ya estén Jaylen Brown o Crowder, la llegada de Tatum no cierra tampoco la puerta al posible fichaje de Hayward. Eso sí, su virtud, estar ya hecho, es también su mayor problema, ya que su nivel de desarrollo puede ser menor que otros novatos. Del puesto 4 al 10 Como decimos, Jackson puso rumbo a Phoenix, mientras que los Kings se lanzaron a por De’Aaron Fox, base de Kentucky con también muy buena pinta. Menos hecho dicen que está Jonathan Isaac, el alero de Florida State por el que ha apostado Orlando. Con el pick 7 del trade de Jimmy Butler, los Bulls escogieron a Lauri Markanen, finlandés formado en la NCAA que como decimos es un cuatro tirador, con lo que ello acarrea para Mirotic. Los Knicks se tiraron a por el base francés Frank Ntilikina, mientras que Dallas se llevó el jugador más revolver de todo el Draft: Dennis Smith es definido como un mini-Westbrook, pero las lesiones y su mala cabeza pueden cortar su progresión. Por último, en el puesto 10 entró Zach Collins, el único center de las primeras posiciones, que será jugador de Portland tras otro traspaso mediante Sacramento realizado en plena gala.
