How Shadow Of The Erdtree Portrays Hate, and The Tragedy of trying to Escape
Elden Ring Spoilers(Hey! Been a while since i did this)

I’ve gotten further into the DLC and this might just be one of the best stories of how Hatred is just a cycle that repeats which consumes innocent people in its wake.
This DLC has done so much to make us understand why Marika did the things she did. She lived in a peaceful village, only for people she loved and cared about to be taken and put into jars. And why is that? Because their bodies meld well with others, something she can’t control since she was just born with it.
And so she becomes the new God of the Lands Between, imposing her new order onto others, and having her own son be the one to lead it. But when the fire fades and the ash settles, the one who suffers of the two of them is Messmer. She leaves him in the Shadow Realm because he doesn’t fit in her new order, representing so much of what is considered “Sinful”. And he is left alone, because of something he can’t control since he was born with it.
And then, as years pass and she makes a family again, she has twins! She can finally begin to rebuild, to move on from the hatred she felt!
except, she can’t. Because of the fact that her children have horns, just as her oppressors did. And so do multiple families in the Lands Between, with this seemingly “cursed” blood spreading, she has a choice to make.
Let go of the hate, try to accept her sons and the Omens.
Or hold onto it, persecute them, cut off their horns, and drop them into the sewers, out of sight out of mind.
We know what she picked.
And it’s this hatred that sparka another ambition just like hers. Mohg.
Imagine you’re Mohg. You have no family save for your brother. You live in the sewers while only ever being able to watch the outside world with happy familes and children with parents who love them. But all the while, what do you have? Nothing. All because of something you can’t control because you were born with it.
And so you decide to build your own order. Away from it all. Your brother wants no part, he clings to the hope of being accepted by that damn tree. But it’s fine.
You take some of the other Omens with you, and get to work. You even have help from an Outer God, so higher powers must want you to succeed! Others shave their horns but not you, no you proudly grow them out, even if it impedes your vision, because they are a part of you.
You take in all kinds, Humans, Omens, even Albinaurics, who had no home before. You give your fellow Omens real clothes, regal clothes. They’ve never had clothes after all, so don’t they deserve the best? You build and you build and eventually you have a beautiful part of the Underground to yourselves, you did it, you’ve won!
Mohg could have broken from the cycle, stayed in Mohgwyn, as he did even when chaos reigned above. People were strong under him, and had a home even if they were shunned in other places.
But that choice was taken from him.
Miquella used him to accomplish his own goal of godhood, robbing him of his own agency. Just like his brothers, Mohg was used by his family, but unlike the others, he wasn’t even aware of it. No matter how far he ran, no matter how much he tried to cut himself off from it. The hatred of his mother reached him, in the form of someone else using him to break away from the consequences of it.
Now I’m not saying Mohg was perfect. His group was no less sadistic than some of the others in the lands between.
But he was robbed of a dream, and told it was never his to have.

Miquella's followers really just saying the quiet part out loud. Like "If you're here, you must be mind controlled too! Welcome to the Thrall Club! Don't worry about that one weird guy, he's as brainwashed as the rest of us."

headcanons about Elden Ring characters and Numen language
Because why not.
Marika: It's her native language, and she had to learn the Common Tongue of the Lands Between from scratch when she came there. She can still speak, read and write in it perfectly. Despite having been God-Queen for millennia, she hasn't picked up any kind of Common accent. Curses in it once in a while.
Godwyn: Marika taught him some basics when he was really little (vocab, basic alphabet, counting, etc.), but that's it. He recognizes spoken and written Numen easily, but can't understand a whole lot.
Miquella and Malenia: Miquella remembers some of what Godwyn told them about it, but other than that, neither know a lick.
Morgott and Mohg: Both picked up a bit as children, before being cast into the sewers. When alone, Morgott repeats words and phrases to himself, desperately trying to retain what little he knows. Mohg forgot pretty much everything.
Tiche and the Black Knives: Alecto made everyone speak it in the Assassins' barracks. As a result Tiche speaks it perfectly and can hold a conversation just fine. She can read a little, from reading reports between the Queen and the Assassins (written in Numen to save them the trouble of using a cypher). She learned to curse in it from the other, older Black Knives, but Greater Will help her if her mother catches her so much as using informal grammar.
Radagon: Never spoke it around other people, so as not to blow his cover. Once, Rennala caught him singing a Numen lullaby to a baby Ranni, and he had to ad-lib an explanation in a panic. She didn't totally believe him, but never questioned him further.

Ranking the Golden Order by how willing I'd be to work under them pt.1
10. Miquella
I am NOT blowing myself up with holy magic for the miquellester 😭😭😭 also working side by side with a putrid tree spirit and rot kindlings cannot be good for your health
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. Godrick
Some of the strongest armour as far as foot soldiers go which puts him just barely above miquella but I'm probably getting my arms cut off and stuck to him so I'm not to keen on that also he has no aura so thats another thing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Rykard
Basically the same as Godrick but with the added bonus of insane drip and I'm less likely to get eaten since realistically gonna be weak ash
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7/6. Morgott/Godwyn
Basically the same force but I cant really put them higher than this since idk much about Morgotts leadership or Godwyns

Hey I just realized something.
Is he ever actually called 'Miquella the Unalloyed'?! Because I've checked and the only direct mention I can find of this is Gideon calling him 'Miquella of the Haligtree, the Unalloyed.' In Japanese circles, Miquella's title is Miquella (of the) Haligtree. So what's going on here? Have I missed something?
Look at this
"Miquellan Knight's Sword [2200000]
Sword forged by servants of Miquella of the Haligtree"
Is Miquella the Unalloyed a fandom term after all?
Sorry! I wanted to answer this ask before but I forgot fdhhsd But I think you might be actually right, and it was the name fandom just kind of agreed upon!
I have been using Google documents for dialogues ( x ) and every description ( x ) in Elden Ring; Japanese text aside, they also allow for very easy search for the keywords you need! I just went to check every mention of his name. I've only found:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The Empyrean Miquella" (Bewitching Branch, Miquella's Lily and the note about Miquella's Needle)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The Young Miquella" (Discus of Light, Triple Rings of Light and Radagon's Rings of Light). Though I am not sure if this can count as a title? It could be, since in his case, 'young' is not just the age, but also a marker of his curse!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Lord Miquella" (Stranded Spirits after the Castle Sol Rooftop Site of Grace and in the Consecrated Snowfield, near the Sending Gate to Mohgwyn Palace, as well as the dialogue of cut content Reeling Rico)
Tumblr media
"Miquella of the Haligtree, the Unalloyed" (Gideon's dialogue). Just like you said! Japanese text is not very different: 無枱ăȘă‚‹é»„é‡‘ă€è–æščăźăƒŸă‚±ăƒ©! It says the same thing, but in reverse order: 'pure gold (unalloyed (gold)), Miquella of the sacred tree (Haligtree)'! Considering that he did create Unalloyed Gold, this part of the title for sure fits!
That's all for pre-DLC descriptions! I tried to also check pre-DLC interviews ( x ), but still nothing! Sooooo, yeah. The fandom has had a Mandella effect I think? This is good to know! @ SOTE haters: if you want to rebel against new lore nukes by refusing to use the tag 'miquella the kind' and sticking to the other one, I think you should switch on 'the empyrean miquella' or 'miquella of the haligtree'! :p /lh

Thinking about it, it seems every child of Radagon and Marika has either parallels or thematic relations with a demigod from another marriage
Miquella - Ranni and Mohg
Malenia - Radahn and Morgott
Messmer - Rykard and Godwyn
I think the Empyrean twins and the Omen twins are most interesting.
In the case of Miquella and Mohg, they are both twins cursed from birth who wish to disavow Marika's legacy. They've witnessed what it's like to be born cursed, for Mohg he faced discrimination and for Miquella he witnessed what people shunned from the GO endured, and how that could've been him had he not been lucky to not be abandoned by Marika. As a consequence, they both want to make a new era where people like themselves no longer suffer.
It makes me wonder if Miquella was aware of what the Omen twins endured, and if it influenced his beliefs and his choice of picking Mohg's body for Radahn
As for Malenia and Morgott, they too are twins born with a cursed from an outer entity. They've grown to greatly detest this curse, as seen by Malenia not wanting to use her rot powers at all until the Aeonia battle, and this is even more obvious in the case of Morgott. They've also developed great loyalty towards a figurehead of an era, Marika in the case of Morgott and Miquella in the case of Malenia. Conveniently, Miquella and Marika also share thematic parallels. Malenia and Morgott are also great in battle, and Radahn has suffered under both of them. They are willing to fight for the era they believe in and put a lot of religious trust on the figureheads they follow.
The case of Messmer and Godwyn is also interesting, because of how different they are. Messmer has two curses; hid fire and the abyssal serpent, meanwhile Godwyn is born completely normal and only suffers when he half dies. They are also figureheads of the order of Marika, with Godwyn being a stand-in for the Golden Order and Messmer leading Marika's crusade. Their hair colours also show the two sides of Marika; blonde and red.
Though, I'll say the case for Messmer and Rykard is just as interesting. Messmer was born cursed from a serpent yet Rykard chooses to be eaten by the God devouring serpent. For Messmer, the curse was forced upon him. For Rykard, he chose it on his own free will. This dichotomy is one of the central bits to their characters, and how important the concept of free will is. Rykard would view Messmer in great awe, perhaps he wouldn't even see the abyssal serpent as a curse. Messmer on the other hand, would perhaps not understand why Rykard decided to ruin himself, and ofc detest him for going against his mother's likeness.
I won't speak on more obvious writing, like with Miquella/Ranni and Malenia/Radahn.
This isn't exclusive to the trio I mentioned above, btw. I think every child of Marika has some relations to each other in some way. The most obvious example being Ranni and Godwyn. I just think it's neat how the characters relate to each other whilst still being very unique
This goes for Melina too, btw. But my speculation on that feels more like a headcanon more than anything haha. But it seems Melina, like Marika, subtly wants us to go for Ranni. I think this is because Melina put great importance in fighting for a new world where life can flourish (as seen if you pursue the frenzied flame), and Ranni's ending is the best for this. She is also more than happy to destroy symbols of Marika's order, like the Erdtree.
Now this is real headcanon territory. But, if the theory that Melina was split in body and soul, and that who we travel with is the spirit whilst who we see in the frenzied flame ending is her body, it would seem Melina also has thematic correlations with Godwyn and Ranni. Specifically about the splitting of the soul and body. But ofc that's entirely speculation!
Ofc she also has similarities with Messmer, in the sense of them having the same closed eye, and both being related to fire (except Melina embraces that fiery nature, whilst Messmer detests it. That speaks about their characters, I think. Especially in relation to Marika), but overall Melina for me seems to be a more unique character, and if anything she takes after Marika the most. I have further thoughts about Melina pertaining to Millicent but I'll leave that be.
Anyways. This was a quick thought dump I needed to get out there into the world.

a little bit of a modern Au about miquella and mohg! It's something really simple but it made me somewhat happy, I imagine them living in an apartment, Miquella had run away from home and went with Mohg, they both had already talked about being together but Miquella didn't know when to go until she found out that her parents were thinking about marrying him to Radahn [both Miquella and Radahn did not want that] so he decided that it was the right time to run away. Now he lives with Mohg and they are happy.
Tumblr media
One sad thing that I would like to add is that Miquella keeps talking to Malenia, they talk for hours and almost every day, Malenia is sick and well, sometimes she has to go to the hospital for treatment, something that makes Miquella sad, he knows that He wouldn't die, but knowing and seeing how he went and returned to the hospital depressed him. As soon as that call ends, Miquella seeks comfort in Mohg.

Finally finished the Elden Ring dlc!
Didn’t expect Miquella’s true consort to be Radahn and to have a canon gay pairing in the game, (and the dlc came out in June, just in time for Pride lol.) These two were hard af to beat. Anyway I guess we can say Happy Pride Month from FromSoftware!

from what i’ve seen since the SOTE release, many fans stuck entirely to one perception of miquella; that being that he’s a horrible & selfish little guy who was always bad and needs to be stopped. and while he’s certainly not a good person, he’s definitely not the evilest character out there.
i think something a lot of people forget is that characters are in fact multifaceted, especially shown in the divine folks of the lands between. there is no one bad guy & one good guy, especially with the trope of generational trauma played on marika and her lineage.
if anything miq is probably very deep in his own savior mindset. the idea that if he can’t help his own twin sister than he has to ‘help’ everyone, by cutting off the order upheld by his mother, in hopes to break the cycle & ‘make the world a gentler place’.
he’d want this by any means, even if that means abandoning part of himself & destroying his mortal flesh. like this post says; miquella’s affliction is not of eternal childhood, but of nascency. nothing he starts will ever come to fruition; not his plan for godhood, not curing malenia, nothing.
miquella thinks himself a saint. the good one. he believes ushering in his age of compassion will prevent the folks of the lands between from feeling the pain and trauma that he has experienced as his own, but this would fail and ultimately lead to his demise.
