the other side of the mirror
when the mask cracks, and all the work you put into it falls to pretty little porcelain pieces.
when the next one cracks, and the next one and the next one andthenxtoneanxthe -
and they're behind you, looking in the mirror
and they can see what's underneath peeking through, and you can see, reflected in the mirror, their expressions of horror
disgust
anger
anger, because you weren't supposed to be this thing
anger, because they want THEIR friend back
anger because you aren't what they like
and suddenly you're on the otherside
and you see the masks that weren't there before
anger, because they were so much worse than you
and you showed them they didn't have to be that way.
you showed them your wings
your halo
your horns
your everything
and they sheared them all off.
and then they left you, flailing behind the mirror
masks grinning all the while
this is for your own good
maybe one day we'll love you again

in the endgame of The Sexy Brutale (so, spoilers,) mirrors function as portals. and for what? somd kind of Jungian shadow self allegory? as you come to know yourself, you gain access to heretofore unventured corridors of the labyrinthine casino (which serves as a metaphor for the convoluted mind of its proprietor)? self-knowledge?? clarity of vision??
but then the places you access through those mirrors are the most abstract in the entire game—topsy turvy, funhouse mirror, through the looking glass type shit. so do the mirrors have a distortive effect? or a clarifying effect? spoilers again—the game's world is an illusion! so while the realistic areas of the casino are only a reflection of their real-world counterparts, maybe the vortex of cards and the tree in the prison cell and the operating theater in the basement are all, by VIRTUE of their distortion, closer to the reality of the situation
(it should be mentioned that using the mirrors as portals creates a visual effect not unlike a funhouse mirror)
so by distorting what appears "real", The Sexy Brutale's mirrors bring the player closer to the truth

Isekai
Listening to happy Japanese anime-like music is the one way I really feel at peace. In my day dreams, I dream of being in a different world, somewhere far away on a cliff overlooking the beautiful shining sea. Glistening, with waves that shower over the rocks below. As the wind blows past my body, I can feel the warmth and breeze of the air. Then I lay down on the grass and just stare at the blue skies.
Then I realize I’m back here again, in my room, typing away. Sometimes I wish I was somewhere else far away. Exploring a different world, filled with adventures to come.
Maybe this is why I love the “Isekai” genre in anime. It really makes me wish I could just be somewhere else. Somewhere, where I can be free.

what’s cool about mirrors is they can fit SO much symbolism in them
recognition of the self as a benchmark for sentience. self-reflection and self-knowledge -- a tool for finding clarity in one’s actions or circumstances, by dint of a fresh perspective. the dichotomy of the perceiving self and the perceived self, that state of being rendered an object, observed. (that moment when you realize you can see yourself in a mirror, and you become self-conscious -- as if the mirror has a conscious gaze and it is Looking At You). truth -- but also illusion. distortion. preoccupied vanity and self-absorption. hold one mirror up opposite another, and you achieve that devil’s trick of infinity. smoke and mirrors to mislead and misdirect. a scrying mirror to achieve sight beyond sight, hyperclarity beyond biological perception.
and it’s a bit more complicated than a simple truth/illusion dichotomy -- because even its faithful reflections are inverted; and even its tricks of the light, its folklore ghosts and phantom shadows, are something of a reflection of our state of mind.
