I find it very funny that I used to see so much content for this game series when I was like 13 and got too scared after the first trial’s execution during DanTDM’s playthrough that I never touched it again until like last year when a bud of mine wanted me to see them play.

THEN a few months ago I told them I wanted to play it myself and so we’re almost through the 2nd game(this session was starting and completing chapter 4 and then starting chapter 5) and now HERE WE ARE lol.

Obviously the series has a bunch of flaws and I have quite a few problems with it(including the reasons I refuse to play ultra despair girls). Perhaps it’s because I am biased and very uncomfortable with that type of fanservice, but I’m not always a fan of how women are portrayed in the games(thankful at least for the main character typically being very respectful). Plus, no narrative is perfect! Some of the story is meh or doesn’t make sense.

Despite its flaws though, I do quite like the characters and story!

SPOILER WARNING FOR THE 1 AND 2

So Makoto, right????? Idk why exactly but he’s just so easy to project onto???? I’m not sure if it’s just good narrative storytelling or that he’s relatable, but I definitely felt more included in the story and felt like this kid was just saying what I was thinking. I don’t often get super immersed in games, but Makoto felt so natural to project onto that I got emotional a lot and really felt the despair(lol) that he was feeling. Especially after trials, his narration just felt like I was talking to myself.

And I’m only now realizing this as I go on through Hajime’s eyes, but Hajime isn’t as relatable to me as Makoto was(though maybe I’m just really attached to my goober). I think I have also heard this somewhere as well? But perhaps I like him because he’s feels transmasc? Like that’s the vibe he’s giving me so maybe that’s a big reason why I project on him so easy? Like, he’s peak ✨gender✨ and I have no idea why????

Next, KYOKO!!!!!!! She’s literally so cool. I kind of have a record for finding serious women with purple hair attractive(Ei from Genshin is good example), and Kyoko is no exception— Plus she’s so SMART like that’s my TYPE. If you show me a woman who will give her all to solve the most complex mystery ever and she DOES IT?? Like can we hold hands?? Can I take her to dinner??

Despite just that though, I love her character in general. ESPECIALLY towards the end, during the second to last trial where you have to choose to trust her or not(my buddy pranked me by making me do the bad ending— a nightmare, I tell you).

I love building up this almost perfect image of her in our mind and then also finally seeing that she can be selfish and petty?? Seeing her start to crack a little? Seeing her and Makoto’s friendship grow until they REALLY relied on each other? Seeing these two grow throughout the story and show how capable they are together????

(Side note that I need a zombie post-apocalypse au with these two. They could find out what started it all out of Kyoko’s sheer curiosity and then find the best way to survive in the end by trusting and relying on each other. C’mon, it’d be peak)

And Celeste!!!! I told my buddy that I wanted her to have a trial SO BAD, I was actually desperate. I was so desperate for her to be the killer that I figured out what she did WHILE SHE DID IT(as much as I could ofc)and I wish I had recordings of my initial reaction because I was basically screaming the whole time.

I hope that gives you an idea about how much I love this character(despite her being a selfish, narcissistic, and unapologetic manipulator). Particularly the part where she lies to Hifumi about something gross Taka did(which he did not do), that makes me genuinely hate her as a person. BUT I like showing that she will do truly terrible and disgusting things and spew any lie she can come up with just to get what she wants. It definitely shows how brutal the story can get sometimes and I think Celeste is probably one of the worst (morally) characters in the game despite supposedly being one of the ‘good guys’.

I also love how she is so inwardly different than how she portrays herself. Her name, her personality, even her ACCENT is fake. And then getting to see her snap is gorgeous.

I also loved her execution SO MUCH. First they set up all fancy and it’s a pretty cool and thematic way to go out. Of course, she can see a castle that she probably dreamed of all her life and surely that’s salt in the wound, but burning at the stake? Pretty brutal, pretty sick. But then she gets SLAMMED by a fire truck that completely breaks the mood and comes out of nowhere, ruining the vibe and making her death feel so insane and ridiculous, taking away that mysterious facade she always kept once and for all by making you focus on the fire truck that just killed her??? Making her death seem like a ludicrous joke???? Disrespecting her death like she disrespected everyone around her by placing herself above all else?? It’s the ultimate(lol) karma and it feels so good.

Fuyuhiko, my man, my guy, my baby gangsta. The character I would HATE to see die. If he does, I will shed many tears(especially scared since my rule of ‘they already nearly died so they’re safe now’ was violated).

His relationship with Peko was so tragic, especially since he probably wanted her to just be his sister(my headcanon ofc) but she(and everyone around them) insisted she was nothing but a tool.

Then, when he was ready to kill Mahiru, Peko steps in because she has no self-preservation and thinks she is doing as Fuyuhiko wants. By saying that she was Fuyuhiko’s weapon and thus he should go free, she thinks she’s been acting for others and not making her own choices.

But I like to imagine a scene where Fuyuhiko is saying instead that he never asked her to kill for him. That he didn’t use her. Then, we slowly see realization creep into her expression as she understands that she made her own choice.

I mainly like this idea^ because we don’t really see that realization dawn on anyone. It’s so ironic that someone who claims that she doesn’t make her own decisions and can’t go against her ‘employer’ actually did exactly what he didn’t want.

And, of course, Fuyuhiko trying to interfere with her execution and losing an eye in the process and still feeling indebted to her, missing her often. Like, they’re brother and sister and I can’t be convinced otherwise(of course, it never really gets brought up in game that he was willing to let her and everyone else die so he could go free and I do wonder how differently I would see him had he succeeded before Peko stopped him. He did stab himself to ‘repent’ so I have assumed he just didn’t think the consequences through properly due to being desensitized to death).

I also find it funny that everyone takes him seriously despite how terribly he is suffering(or thriving, idk) from major baby face. Like, you’re telling me the ultimate yakuza looks like a middle schooler?? That baby over there could kill me?? Idk, wouldn’t believe it.

And also also seeing him bond more with the group and get closer to people who don’t worship him? LOVE IT GIMME MORE PLEASE!! Him opening up a little sometimes??? Being emotionally vulnerable???? Yes!!!! Good job!!!!
