Wheeling Nailers Square Weekend Series With 5-2 Win

The Wheeling Nailers got off to a fantastic start on Saturday night, and that effort carried them through the night, as they evened the three-game series against the Orlando Solar Bears with a 5-2 victory at Kia Center. Jordan Frasca and Tanner Laderoute both tallied a goal and an assist, while Evan Vierling chipped in with three assists and Jaxon Castor made 25 saves. The Nailers enjoyed a phenomenal first period, as they outshot Orlando, 12-2, while putting a pair of pucks past the netminder. The opening goal came at the 5:49 mark. Justin Lee let a wrist shot go from the top of the left circle into a maze of bodies. The puck bounced to Jordan Frasca at the top of the crease, where he quickly shifted to his backhand and slid in the marker. With less than ten seconds left in the stanza, Davis Bunz added to the lead. Bunz had his first shot from the right circle blockered away, but the rebound went straight back to him, and he changed his target, as he found the twine on the glove side. Both teams lit the lamp once in the middle frame. The Solar Bears initially cut the Wheeling lead down to one on the man advantage. Marc-Andre Gaudet slithered a low wrist shot on goal from the right point, which was stopped. However, Brayden Low raked the rebound free, and sifted the puck under Jaxon Castor's right pad. The Nailers regained their two-goal edge 90 seconds later. Thimo Nickl fired the puck on goal from the right point, and was thwarted by Colten Ellis. The rebound popped up to the left side of the crease, where Tanner Laderoute whacked it home with his backhand. Jordan Martel gave Wheeling some key insurance with 10:33 left, when he finished off a quick passing play from Evan Vierling and Frasca by slamming in a shot from the right side of the crease. The assist was Vierling's third of the night. Mitchell Hoelscher brought Orlando within two with a power play goal off of a rebound on the right side of the crease, before Matthew Quercia applied the final dagger in the 5-2 Nailers triumph with an empty netter. Jaxon Castor earned his third consecutive win in goal for Wheeling, as he denied 25 of the 27 shots he faced. December's ECHL Goaltender of the Month Colten Ellis was handed just his second loss in his last 11 starts, as he allowed four goals on 32 shots. The Nailers and Solar Bears will have Sunday off, before concluding their three-game series in Orlando on Monday at 7:00. Wheeling will then play three straight home games next weekend on January 12th, 13th, and 14th. The highlight game of that stretch is the next Big Six Promotional Night, which is Super Nailers World on the 13th. That game will feature a video game arcade in the main lobby, a hat giveaway, question mark boxes with various prizes, Nailers Kart during intermission, and specialty jerseys. Season memberships and other terrific ticket plans for the 2023-24 season are available now by calling (304) 234-GOAL. The Wheeling Nailers, considered one of the top things to do in Wheeling, West Virginia, provide affordable family entertainment for fans throughout the Ohio Valley. Read the full article

On My Radar: 7.7.18

WANT: Meet “Aunt Anita.” Or perhaps you already know her because you have your very own Aunt Anita. I have an artist crush on Hayley Gaberlavage, so I was thrilled to learn she is now showing at Cole Pratt Gallery. Contemporary. Humorous. Slightly Southern. Explore Hayley’s work here.
LOVE: Arnaud’s Summer Champagne Campaign! Enjoy bottomless Moët every Thursday night in July and August. Only two rules (to live by!): all champagne must be consumed in main dining room or jazz bistro and you must purchase an entrée. My recommendation: Pompano David, delicately grilled with olive oil and herbs. Probably one of the more healthy things on the menu, but it is an absolute treat!
MEET: NOPSI Hotel celebrates their one year anniversary this week. This hotel is part of the luxury resort group SALAMANDER HOTELS AND RESORTS, led by SHELIA C. JOHNSON, who is also the founder of BET and owner of many professional sports teams. Get to know Ms. Johnson’s New Orleans story here.
VISIT: Headed over to the Mississippi Gulf Coast? Be sure to scout out Studio Waveland recently opened by Larkin and Mitchell Gaudet. Two weekends ago, I went to the opening reception for Vībrənsē, a group art exhibit including the work of TSG photographer Sara Essex Bradley, and I loved almost every piece in the exhibit, and especially the sidewalk picnic!
SHOP: Villa Vici’s summer sale is happening now. Shop local online here.
TELL THEM SCOUT SENT YOU!

Christmas Eve market in Moncton a life-saver for last minute shoppers
For many, Christmas Eve means a mad dash to the mall to get that final present crossed off the list.
For others, it's a chance to see friends and maybe shop local at the farmer’s market.
Christmas Eve at the Marché Moncton Market means last minute shopping, getting a bite to eat and an opportunity to stock up on goodies before the big day comes.
The eve of the biggest day of the year means different things to different people, but for most, it means being with their loved ones.
Veronique Gaudet was there Saturday morning enjoying a hot chocolate with her sister, niece and nephew.
“To me, it means a family reunion, because we just came back from Quebec and we celebrate the whole family together and that's the best gift that there is,” said Gaudet.
Tammie and Abbie Gaudet were enjoying a mother-daughter day.
“We go to the market and then we will go to the mall and have a Starbucks and watch all the crazy people running around because we are all done,” laughed Tammie.
It's hard to beat Christmas Day of course, but is the 24th actually the best day of the year?
“I think Christmas Eve is better than Christmas,” said Abbie.
‘For me it is,” said Shelly Mitchell, who was waiting for a delivery. “I wrapped my last gift at 5 a.m. this morning, so that's a bit of a celebration because I've been shopping and trying to find the perfect gift for everyone, so yeah, it was a sense of accomplishment this morning.”
For some, Christmas Eve means having to work, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Dan Wetmore and his crew at Kurt’s Sausage were hard at work as usual but they were also taking time to greet customers and get a few treats themselves.
“We look forward to this every year. This is the most special market. This is the time where we get to enjoy the time we have with our VIP customers that come every week. We get treated very well. It's a good day for tips and presents. We’ve had a people drop off cheesecakes, chicken wings, maybe a few libations,” said Wetmore.
Kris Reicker was all smiles as he was leaving the market with a bag full of goodies.
“We're going to go home, wrap a few presents, have a few lollipops and enjoy the evening,” said Reicker.

He fears recent amendments tabled to the nine-year-old Health Services Act may create a lack of clarity while hampering the board’s ability to fulfill its fiduciary, operational and strategic responsibilities. - Jim Day CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Alex MacBeath says he resigned as chairman of Health P.E.I.’s board of directors over concerns with a new governance model for the provincial health authority announced late last week. MacBeath fears recent amendments tabled to the nine-year-old Health Services Act may create a lack of clarity while hampering the board’s ability to fulfill its fiduciary, operational and strategic responsibilities. "It’s a dramatic shift," says MacBeath. "I think there is a risk that this does not allow us to move forward in the way that we should and want to move forward ... whether it’s a backwards step, I will answer that in a year or two." All board directors, including MacBeath, handed in a collective letter of resignation Tuesday, leaving the province looking to temporarily plug the hole with a trustee. MacBeath says the amendments are a step in the wrong direction, putting politics front and centre in the health decision-making process. "The amendments remove important checks and balances on the (health and wellness) minister," he says. "Without them, there are greater opportunities for politics to influence decision-making in the health care system. For example, the minister can now choose a CEO that will execute the minister’s exclusive vision." He adds Health P.E.I.’s chief executive officer may receive conflicting direction from the board of directors and the minister. MacBeath says the board tried to work collaboratively with Health and Wellness Minister Robert Mitchell since he took on the weighty health portfolio in January. However, he says key board proposals, including the recommendation of a well-qualified CEO and the development of a business plan with measurable targets to achieve fiscal balance, were "categorically rejected" by Mitchell. "The minister believes he knows what is best for the Island’s health care system and has paved the way for no one to challenge his beliefs and decisions," says MacBeath. "I think there are always changes that can be made. Systems and structures and all that evolve. I think there was always the opportunity for it to evolve. I’m not sure that this (shift) was in the best interest of health care in the Island." “The minister believes he knows what is best for the Island’s health care system and has paved the way for no one to challenge his beliefs and decisions ... I think there are always changes that can be made. Systems and structures and all that evolve. I think there was always the opportunity for it to evolve. I’m not sure that this (shift) was in the best interest of health care in the Island.’’ – Alex MacBeath Mitchell lauds the board’s work and laments their decision to resign. "It is unfortunate and I am disappointed the board decided to go this route," he told The Guardian. He expects a trustee to be appointed soon to fulfill the duties of the board until a new board is established. Mitchell says the province will employ Engage P.E.I. to seek out individuals with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to fulfill the responsibilities of the Health P.E.I. Board. The minister told The Guardian a new board will need to develop a work plan and look to heavily engage the community. Health P.E.I. says the amendments are designed to bring P.E.I. more in line with similar legislation in other Canadian provinces. "We’re not designing a new wheel," adds Mitchell. "We’re just copying what other jurisdictions do." The changes also aim to increase accountability within the health system, create stronger linkages to the community and clearly define roles and responsibility for both the ministry and the health authority. MacBeath says the board was comprised of "incredibly well-qualified and talented" directors but he is confident other Islanders will "step up to the plate" to replace them. He says Health P.E.I., which was created as a Crown corporation nine years ago, has done a "phenomenal job" in creating a one-Island health system, taking away the series of independent health authorities across the Island. He adds Health P.E.I., which is responsible for the delivery of publicly funded health services in Prince Edward Island under a $710-million budget, is an incredibly complex system that includes operating hospitals, health centres, public long-term care nursing facilities and community-based programs and services. "You have 5,000 professionals delivering a range of services, some on an urgent basis, and very complex medical needs delivered in a variety of facilities in a variety of different settings and that just makes it complex," said MacBeath. "What is as important to Islanders being able to access quality services today," he adds, "is having a system with a capacity for long-term sustainability. And that is the primary responsibility of any board. So, let’s make sure we don’t lose sight in dealing with the short-term that we don’t do anything to damage the long-term capacity for sustainability." Four Mock Drafts for the Vegas Golden Knights
Protected lists! They are here! It's Christmas morning!
That is, it's like Christmas morning if you were a bad kid and your parents got you nothing but socks and sweaters to teach you a lesson. Yeah, you need socks and sweaters, but no matter how many packages you tear open, there will not be a Nintendo (or whatever the kids play these days).
Likewise, the NHL is giving fans a new team with the expansion draft this week, but when we finally open it up, it's not going to be what we wanted.
The (Not Las) Vegas Golden Knights have until Wednesday morning to submit their draft list, which must contain one player from each team in the league. The roster will be revealed that night during the NHL Awards show (and probably throughout the day in the form of leaks to the media). The 30-player team must have at least 14 forwards, nine defensemen, and three goalies, and it must also be salary-cap compliant.
In the spirit of fun content, I imagined four different expansion drafts for the Golden Knights, each using its own unique criteria: one team designed solely for tanking, one team for comedic purposes only, one win-now team, and one team that represents the best possible outcome for Vegas. (And thanks to TSN's draft simulator for making this easy.)
THE RACHEL PHELPS MEMORIAL TANKING TEAM
In the 1989 movie Major League, Rachel Phelps inherits the Cleveland Indians from her dead husband. Like any sane person, she does not want to live in Cleveland, so she puts together a roster she hopes is so bad that it will drive down attendance to the point she can enact a clause in the lease with the city that would allow her team to move to Florida.
This would be the Vegas equivalent of that team.
Forwards: Jared Boll, Zac Rinaldo, Brandon Bollig, Jordin Tootoo, Matt Hendricks, Shawn Thornton, Dustin Brown, Ryan White, Steve Ott, Cody McLeod, Luke Gazdic, Cal Clutterbuck, Chris Neil, Tom Sestito
Defensemen: Josh Jorges, Eric Gelinas, Jack Johnson, Dylan McIlrath, Kevin Klein, Andrew MacDonald, Brenden Dillon, Robert Bortuzzo, Jason Garrison
Goalies: Anders Lindback, Kari Lehtonen, Cam Ward
Utility: Luca Sbisa, Brooks Orpik, Mark Stuart, Garrett Sparks
Cap hit: $69,135,476 Players under contract for next season: 20
How many games does this team win? If I set the over/under at seven, you probably need to think about it for a while, don't you? Remember: the expansion Ottawa Senators won ten games, and that team was trying.
If we're sticking with the Major League theme here:
Zac Rinaldo is Ricky Vaughn. Rinaldo is probably better suited for some sort of penal league, and it's not hard to imagine his teammates referring to him as Vedge Head.
Just a bit outside. Photo by Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports
Brooks Orpik is Jake Taylor. Orpik should be in a league outside of the United States and his knees are shot.
Jack Johnson is Roger Dorn. There's something here with both players being concerned about making as much money as possible at this point in their careers.
Steve Ott retired, but I bet he could be enticed to play one more season centering a line with Luke Gazdic and Chris Neil.
THE MITCHELL FRIEDMAN "WHO ARE THESE GUYS?" TEAM
Also in Major League, there's a scene where an Indians fan is looking over the roster and says, "Mitchell Friedman?" It's because no one has heard of those guys. If Vegas went strictly off that philosophy (I swear, this is the last Major League reference here, and this is only because it's been on HBO a lot lately), here's that team:
Forwards: Nicolas Kerdiles, Tyler Gaudet, Justin Kea, Turner Elson, Alex Broadhurst, Mark McNeil, Corban Knight, Andrew Crescenzi, Patrick Cannone, Chris Terry, Ben Thomson, Ben Holmstrom, Daniel Catenacci, Casey Bailey
Defensemen: Linus Arnesson, Tyler Wotherspoon, Dillon Simpson, Brad Hunt, Will O'Neill, David Warsofsky, Dan Kelly, Andrew Campbell, Andrey Pedan
Goalies: Daniel Altshuller, Mac Carruth, Edward Pasqualle
Utility: Mike Angelidis, Liam O'Brien, Ryan Olsen, Jordan Binnington
Cap hit: $18,529,918 Players under contract for next season: 22
When you're the biggest star on the team. Photo by Bruce Fedyck-USA TODAY Sports
As you might have surmised, this team is technically invalid because it falls way below the salary cap floor—but who cares? Mock expansion drafts should be enjoyable and picking these random names (Is Chris Terry the most recognizable name here?) was too much fun. They played a combined 60 NHL games last season!
And what if I told you some of the names on here aren't NHL players and are names I actually made up or grabbed from somewhere in pop culture?
Is Casey Bailey an Ottawa Senators center or a fringe character on Dawson's Creek?
Is Andrew Crescenzi a Los Angeles Kings center or Diane Lane's love interest in Under the Tuscan Sun?
Are Alex Broadhurst and Jordan Binnington hockey players or romantic rivals in Downton Abbey?
I guess we will never know, because you're not looking up these names and we both know it. [Editor's note: We looked up the names, and rest assured they're all actual hockey players.]
THE MARC BERGEVIN "WE NEED TO WIN NOW" TEAM
Admittedly, I have lost the feel for what the Montreal Canadiens are doing these days—they're big and tough, but they also traded for Jonathan Drouin. That said, all of GM Marc Bergevin's moves in the past year would indicate that he wants his team to win immediately. What if Vegas GM George McPhee decided he needed a playoff team in Year 1?
How would that team look?
Forwards: Alex Burmistrov, Matt Moulson, Lee Stempniak, Mikhail Grigorenko, Benoit Pouliot, Jonathan Marchessault, Trevor Lewis, Eric Staal, Tomas Plekanec, James Neal, Michael Grabner, Jordan Weal, Bryan Rust, David Perron
Defensemen: Sami Vatanen, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Jack Johnson, Dan Hamhuis, Thomas Hickey, David Schlemko, Nate Schmidt, Martin Marincin, Colin Miller
Goalies: Petr Mrazek, Michael Hutchinson, Andrew Hammond
Utility: Cedric Paquette, Reid Boucher, Troy Brouwer, Beau Bennett
Cap hit: $72,172,143 Players under contract for next season: 30
This was tricky. I originally scooped about $83 million in contracts on my first pass and had to make some hard decisions about where to spend and where to save (sorry, Bobby Ryan). Everyone is under contract for next season so no one can escape McPhee's clutches as he builds the most mediocre ship possible.
And Jim Rutherford doesn't have any agreement in place with me, so he can keep Marc-André Fleury.
Here are potential forward and defense combinations:
Perron-Staal-Neal Moulson-Weal-Marchessault Pouliot-Plekanec-Grabner Boucher-Paquette-Rust
Johnson-Vatanen Hamhuis-van Riemsdyk Schlemko-Miller
Mrazek Hutchinson
This team suuuuuuuuuuuucks! The forward group is fine enough, but once you get past Vatanen, it's just terrible on the back end. This is why McPhee can't get caught up in appeasing fans off the bat with the idea of a winning team, because it'll be a bigger disappointment when the team is bad—and there's no way of getting around this team being bad. If it's going to be bad, at least have it be bad with potential going forward.
There's no point in even drafting Vatanen and Neal (more on this when we get to my amazing team), because they can be the Norris Trophy and Rocket Richard winners next season and this team still isn't cracking 70 points.
And if you're wondering how Johnson can be on both the tanking team and the win-now team, think of that as insight into how general managers view Johnson versus his actual value.
So what is the ideal Vegas team?
THE DAVE LOZO IDEAL VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS EXPANSION DRAFT TEAM
We know we can't win now. We know this is going to take forever. So we want to sprinkle the roster with motivated veterans at the end of contracts and young players who have long-term value. How will this team, which is just as bad as any of the others, look?
Forwards: Jonathan Marchessault, Alex Chiasson, Andrej Nestrasil, Mikhail Grigorenko, Lukas Sedlak, Benoit Pouliot, Carl Hagelin, Colin Wilson, Jacob Josefson, Brock Nelson, Michael Grabner, Jordan Weal, Nick Shore, David Perron
Defensemen: Josh Manson, Zach Bogosian, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Jamie Oleksiak, Matt Dumba, Nikita Nesterov, Chris Wideman, David Schlemko, Jason Garrison
Goalies: Petr Mrazek, Michael Hutchinson, Louis Domingue
Utility: Reid Boucher, Martin Marincin, Nate Schmidt, Malcolm Subban
Cap hit: $51,489,940 Players under contract for next season: 30
Years from now, you'll hear stories about how someone like Joe Thornton was a member of the Golden Knights and you'll wonder how it happened. It will be because Vegas wanted nothing to do with that roster, so they drafted a player who wasn't under contract and who they knew wouldn't join the Knights to avoid taking a bad contract or wasting a roster spot.
Hands off Marchessault. Photo by Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports
For my terrible roster with potential for helping the franchise down the road, I'm assuming I have blackmailed the Ducks and the Predators out of high picks to not take Vatanen and Neal. If the Panthers want to blackmail me out of Marchessault, too bad. He's mine. You can't have him.
I'm sure if this were real life, I'd do more blackmailing, but the point is this: I want draft picks. I want them now or I want them at next season's trade deadline for rentals like Grabner or Perron. I would assure every veteran that he was on display for a trade to a contender next season, so don't half-ass it because you're miserable. Bust your ass for 20 minutes a night and hit the tables at the casino later. It's impossible to be miserable in Vegas.
With just about everyone else, I'm looking for long-term potential (Weal) or players who can do more in bigger roles (Josefson) who I can also swap. I do not—I repeat, I do not—want Bogosian, but he's a young right-handed defenseman and I think we can pump and dump him to some other team later.
I'm also taking all players I have under contractual control. Would I like Antti Raanta? Sure, but I'd rather take the 30-goal guy on the cheap contract I can flip either immediately or later and then maybe take a run at Raanta in free agency.
This team would still finish dead last next season, but I'd have like, a thousand picks in the draft. I'm trying to lay a foundation in Vegas and that foundation doesn't need Vatanen, who will be a million years old by the time the team is good, and it doesn't need Brown's contract, because getting to the cap floor is easy.
This team is going to stink no matter what, but it will stink on my terms.

Four Mock Drafts for the Vegas Golden Knights

SCOUT AND ABOUT: Old Arabi

In the SCOUT AND ABOUT series, I share my favorite places and adventures in and around our vibrant community. Together we can explore neighborhoods and discover the hidden gems and amazing entrepreneurs and artisans that make our city so unique and beautiful.
Two weeks ago, Mitchell & Larkin Gaudet took me on a behind-the-scenes tour of Old Arabi, which (in case you haven’t heard) is the new New Orleans artists’ haven. Mitchell and Larkin are internationally acclaimed, one-of-a-kind artists, with incredible vision not only for their own work but also for building community. Sure, crossing over into St. Bernard was a bold move, but I’d expect no less from this daring and always on-point pair. If you really like the Bywater now, you’ll love what’s happening in Old Arabi, where a vibrant artist’s community is building up around the pair’s recently relocated studios. It’s a whole new culture and connotation for St. Bernard Parish, built on a truly unique perspective and appreciation for one of the finest things in life: Art.

Setting the Scene
Old Arabi is an enclave that was settled around the old Domino sugar factory only two miles from downtown New Orleans. At first glance, it doesn’t look like much, but that’s precisely the point. This spot, known for its blighted properties, is currently experiencing the beginnings of a renaissance. The energy, authenticity and passion that are pulsing under the surface and when you look closely, through perhaps Mitchell’s rose-colored Bono glasses, Old Arabi starts to look like the land of plenty.
With the expert guidance of Mitchell and Larkin, I began to notice artist studios and collective enclaves sprouting up, spectacular old warehouse transformations underway and a pulsing local pride steeped in a deep and colorful history. Old Arabi is now sanctioned by the state as a Cultural Arts District, which will preserve that history and vibrant culture even further. And with prices in the Bywater skyrocketing, Old Arabi has an element of authenticity and grit that’s attracting young, passionate artists from the city.
Don’t Miss the Art
First thing’s first. If you’re in Old Arabi, do not miss Larkin Gaudet Studio or Studio Inferno.

The location of Larkin Gaudet studio is a testament to the potential of the neighborhood itself. A giant riverfront warehouse with sweeping views of the New Orleans skyline, its minimalist design is enhanced by Larkin’s pulsing metal and leather furniture designs. Visitors can shop her renowned furniture line, as well as work by emerging New Orleans artists.

Mitchell’s Studio Inferno, the infamous “funky, art-making playground” has officially moved to a renovated movie house on St. Claude Avenue right over the St. Bernard Parish line. This studio is a collector’s paradise, packed with thousands of statues, glass figures and objects waiting to be used in Gaudet’s work. There’s also a glassed-in gallery and studio space for up-and-coming artists to use.
Don’t miss Gaudet’s Seven Deadly Sins Opening Reception on April 16 from 6 to 10 pm at Studio Inferno, with free glass trinkets for the first 100 guests.
If you can’t make that, come on Saturdays to see glass demonstrations. And while you’re there, take a look at Fifi Laughlin’s drop-dead gorgeous hand-blown glass lamps, vases and sconces and discover why all the designers in the network are using her work.

Mitchell and Larkin’s List of Things to Scout in Old Arabi.
The next time you’re in a cab and looking for a place to stop, spring for the extra two-mile route down St. Claude Avenue and hit Old Arabi. Don’t take advice from me, let the experts Mitchell and Larkin show you how to experience Old Arabi.

Grab a Beer Along the River: On Fridays, the entire area along the river becomes an outdoor beer garden of sorts, with local artists taking off early to grab a beer from Old Arabi Bar and sit up on the levy.

Get Your Workout On: Swan River Yoga is a purely donation based yoga studio that brings yoga to all.
For the hardcore, Mr. Norman’s Boxing Gym is about as authentic as it gets.

What to See: The Old Arabi Sugar Museum was recently opened in the area’s old jail and courthouse. The planetarium at the Maumus Center, located in a gorgeously renovated art deco school building. Old Arabi Marketplace is a collection of awesome antique vendors.

Where to Eat & Drink: The Kitchen Table Cafe, Gerald’s Donuts, Old Arabi Food Store , 40 Arpent Brewery, Sunset Landing’s & Pirogue’s Whiskey Bayou, about the coolest sports bar I have seen in a long time.

An old friend of mine, Alexander Navarro, has known that Arabi is the place to be for a long time. He’s been trying to pull me down there to eat at Old Arabi Food Store and nosh on the fried shrimp poboy and chicken fried steak. He did not respond to my text in time so I took the cashier’s recommendation and ordered the roast beef poboy.
