Mitch Joel’s – Six pixels of Separation : Book Report
Tumblr media
Mitch Joel has been classified as one of the top 100 Marketers in the world, he has also made the highly regarded top 40 under 40 list. As the president of Mirum (Twist image) a global digital marketing agency, he steers the company to specialize in driving change within the digital marketing realm at a brand level.
Playing on the notion, Six degrees of Separation, which indicates we’re all connected by 6 or few steps. Joel insinuates the connection is much more noteworthy to the point of only Six pixels of Separation. With a quick google search we have the world at our finger tips. It’s a dwelling ground of real people looking for real interactions, where we can connect with communities, individuals and groups to form a voice.
In the B2C world, we’re now part of an era where consumers have the same voice as corporate companies. Feedback and reviewing platforms encourage people to be transparent, allowing the opportunity for communication, in turn encouraging the thoughts and ideas of both business’ and consumers to flow.
This book endorses the tactics, insights and tools to empower entrepreneurs to create an online experience, and be engaged with the online community.
There will be 5 posts summarizing some key points throughout the book:
1) I Google you..Just like you Google me
2) The channels, the opportunities
3) Entrepreneurship 2.0
4) Viral Expansion
5) Know Control

Video Interview: B.L. Ochman & Mitch Joel Discuss the Growth & Future of Podcasting
By B.L. Ochman @whatsnext
Mitch Joel, “Six Pixels of Separation” author and podcaster and I discuss the growth of podcasting; who should and shouldn’t podcast; what makes a great podcast; what equipment you need to podcast; what makes brand podcasts effective, and much, much more.
What makes a podcast great?
There are some core passions that create the dynamics, Joel said. These include guests and a theme that is sustainable over time. For his “Six Pixels of Separation” podcast, Joel wants people to feel like they pulled up a chair in a cafe as he was speaking to someone in an area he is very curious about.
Content has to rule, we agree, and podcasts need a compelling host. Being an expert and being a good speaker or host are not always the same thing.

Business Travel For Success (And Less Stress)
"How do you do it?"
This the question I get asked the most when it comes to my extensive (and often frenetic) business travel pace. Once I break it down, most people realize that life (and business travel) can be a lot less complicated and stressful if you plan, and seek out the advice from others who have paved the way (and paid the price). After one million miles of business travel, and being a huge nerd/fan of everything associated with it (from best travel apps and gear to the perfect luggage and airport comfort), I'm passionate about business travel (and making it a better experience).
So, how do I do it? How should you do it?
I sat down with my old friend, Bryan Eisenberg, who recently started a show called, Business Travel Hacks, to discuss everything... in gory detail... that I have learned about business travel, and how to make it better. Whether you're on the road for client meetings, to pitch new business, attend trade shows or speak at conferences, these lessons (learned over close to two decades) will (I promise!) make your business travel much better and - in turn - will make your life less stressful at home.
Take a listen... and please feel free to add your best tips, tricks and hacks below in the comments... I'm always hoping to learn more!
Here's the show: How Metallica inspired Keynote Speaker Mitch Joel Travels for Success.

The Original List: 50 Content Marketing Influencers and Experts to Follow into 2019
Content Marketing World 2018 will be here before you know it. The largest content marketing conference in the world brings together an incredible cornucopia of talent, curiosity, knowledge and aspirations for success. Marketers from all over the world come to Cleveland, Ohio for this event of epic proportions.
Readers of our blog know we have a long history with the conference starting at the beginning with 8 years of speaking and attending plus 6 years of partnering with Content Marketing Institute to develop speaker/influencer content marketing campaigns, aka “conference ebooks”, to help promote the event.
Another tradition that has recently been imitated but hardly duplicated, is something we started several years ago: sort through the 200 or more speakers and publish a ranked list of content marketing experts according to their social influence.
List Methodology: For this list we use the Traackr influencer marketing platform to filter the content marketing experts who are speaking at the current year’s Content Marketing World conference using a number of criteria including the relevance of the individuals to the topic, the degree to which their networks engage, and the size of their networks. Online data is pulled from blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, SlideShare, Flickr and several other platforms.
Of course the topic in question is: “content marketing”. Everyone included on this list is a) a speaker at CMWorld 2018, b) ranked in the top 50 for “content marketing” according to relevance, resonance, reach and audience metrics.
People always thank me for including them in these lists and there’s no thanks to be given other than to the people who worked hard sharing useful content about content marketing to their social channels, in blogs, in videos and online in general.
Thanks goes to ALL of the people who are actively sharing knowledge about content marketing by engaging and helping others with opinions, insights and expertise on the social web. This list is just the beginning of understanding all of the top experts and influencers around the topic of content marketing.
In this year’s list there are many familiar faces and some that are new. I hope you find new and inspiring content marketing experts to follow through the rest of this year and into 2019.

Summer Jobs For Teens As Instagram Influencers And More On This Week's CTRL ALT Delete Segment On CHOM 97.7 FM
Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio out of Montreal (home base). It's not a long segment - about 10 minutes every week - about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly on i Heart Radio, if you're interested in hearing more of me blathering away about what's going on in the digital world. I'm really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry DiMonte morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.
This week we discussed:
This is a trend that I have been writing and speaking about for over a decade. Now, it's becoming real. Retailers (and other physical brands) are getting into the virtual goods business. Walmart is starting its own ebook and audiobook service. This is another direct front to the Amazon empire. It makes a lot of sense.
What did you do for work when you were in your teens? I was a day camp counsellor, I slung frozen yogurt and I delivered newspapers. Oh, to be young in 2018! How about being paid to create and post sponsored content on Instagram? Here's the article from The Atlantic: Posting Instagram Sponsored Content Is the New Summer Job.
Instagrammable moments are the new "Kodak moments," right? We also know how "fabricated" a lot of these "candid moments" are. A company called, The Color Factory, is taking this to a whole other level. They have created a 20,000 square foot installation of space (first in San Franciso... and now in Soho) for people to come in and take more beautiful social media pictures in interesting setting (I did find irony in the blue ball pit, but that's another story). Now, you can go through one big building of different settings, and come out with months worth of visually appealing pictures to post on your social feeds.
App of the Week: InShot.

Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #426
Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?
My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, Pandemonio, and ResolveTO, Author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (PressBooks, LibriVox, iambik and co-author of Book: A Futurist's Manifesto) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person "must see".
Check out these six links that we're recommending to one another:
State of image metadata in 2018 - imatag. "We live in an era of truthiness, not knowing what to trust. And much of that misinformation is photographs, and soon, videos. If only there were metadata attached to things we share, so that we could tell where they came from, or if they were real. Of course, images have always had metadata, from the very first digital cameras. But that data has a rough road between its capture and your consumption." (Alistair for Hugh).
Queensryche - Wikipedia. "You know how sometimes you wind up down a rathole on Wikipedia and learn something that blows your mind? Maybe that's just me. But for reasons I won't get into, I was looking up Queensrÿche the other day. And I learned this simple, astonishing fact (to me, anyway): The band had a split that left both parties able to legally use the name. Like, there was literally a time - in 2013 - when you could go to two real legit concerts by that band with the same back catalog and one new album each. I know, this isn't a deep link. But it's the kind of stuff I'd share uncontrollably over lunch with you both, which is why we started doing this, right?" (Alistair for Mitch).
Russia Beyond Caricature - The Dig with Daniel Denvir. "For a certain political class, Russia has come to be seen as the global villain destabilizing the world. But, as with most global foes we engage with in the west, we don't spend much time trying to understand them. I was fascinated to hear this conversation about the context under which Putin/Putinism emerged, the stark chaos of the Yeltzin years in the nineties, and the massive financial destabilization that came with the financial crisis of 2008, and the current worldview out of Moscow." (Hugh for Alistair).
New Dark Age: James Bridle and Ben Vickers on Technology and the End of the Future - VersoBooks. "James Bridle calls himself a recovering techo utopian, and has coined a term for where we are now, 'New Dark Age.' Here he talks about our times, and the fraught relationship with the technologies we are building, but clearly don't understand." (Hugh for Mitch).
PV Sindhu: How India's Olympic badminton star became a sponsors' dream on £126,000 a week - BBC. "Name the top ten wealthiest female athletes in the world. I'll wait. Still waiting. Funny how after the Williams sisters, most people go blank. I had never heard of PV Sindhu. I'm guessing that you have not either? I'm also guessing that you did not know that she is ranked seventh in the world on the Forbes list of highest-earning female athletes. 'Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, more commonly known as PV Sindhu, is a 23-year-old badminton player from India and became only the second Indian competitor, male or female, to win an Olympic badminton medal with a silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her on-court winnings last year totalled $500,000 (£387,000) but endorsements saw Sindhu bring in an extra $8m (£6.2m) in sponsorship in sports-mad India.' I'll bet that PV could walk down the street in any major North American city and not even be stopped for an autograph. I love this story. It's a big world. We need to spend a lot more time exploring it and the people who make it so special, like PV." (Mitch for Alistair).
The NY Public Library wants you to read more books-on Instagram - Fast Company. "How do we feel about the Lewis Carroll classic, Alice's Adventure in Wonderland, being tweaked, designed and published as a story on Instagram? Lovely, isn't it? It's not going to stop there. Over the next few months, the New York Public Library plans to publish several classic books in this format. We could dismiss this as an advertising stunt for the museum. We could state that this is the future of books and reading. Time will tell." (Mitch for Hugh).
Feel free to share these links and add your picks on Twitter, Facebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.
