going to geek out about magus of the library for a while and I need to spread the word. This manga is absolutely incredible and severely underrated. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with Mitsu Izumi or her work, I'm just a huge fan and this manga needs more attention and love.

this manga is literally a love letter to librarians and book-lovers everywhere and it just oozes with nerdiness about libraries, books, and the dissemination of texts. There's literally an action scene in an early chapter where the focus of the action isn't any kind of fighting, but instead the process of repairing and binding a heavily damaged ancient book, described in intricate and accurate detail.

The worldbuilding is incredibly unique and vibrant. It's near impossible to take any given culture in the setting and say "oh they're basically fantasy Arabs/Romans/Chinese/Westerners/etc."; they all have imaginative characterists that make them distinct from familiar real world cultures; it really feels like another world. And I love the inclusion of religion as a theme as well; there aren't just differences of culture here but also religious differences, and even different sects within those religions. I don't think I've ever seen another manga go into this much immersive detail on a fantasy setting before. And the art serves the worldbuilding incredibly well; the fashions and appearances are all so varied and diverse.

The themes are so thought-provoking and well-considered; you can really tell that the mangaka has a serious passion about the issues around the production, dissemination, and consumption of texts. And they tie so well into the worldbuilding.

And the CHARACTERS... each and every one is recognizable and distinct and they all have their own arcs and personalities. The main character is a perfect "viewpoint" character simply because of his desire to learn and unbounded optimism and cheerfulness, but he has his own ambitions, perspectives, and traumas that make him truly feel alive.

If you have the slightest interest in fantasy, books, libraries, media issues, information dissemination, basically anything, you have to start reading this amazing manga immediately. It's available from Kodansha physically and digitally and it's also available on their app KManga.

His right hand man sanzu is there though as an uncle, kinda.

SANZU HARUCHIYO

Active in his daughter’s life but the relationship isn’t so strong due to him always going on benders and disappearing. When you get into arguments with him about his disappearing act his response is always the same as he goes through your fridge.

“You disappeared for three months sanzu, with not even a call or a text of where you were.” trying to nail these words deep into his head while he rummaged through your fridge.

“three months sanzu, no call, not even a ‘hey I’ll be out for this amount of days! But I’ll see you till then” you just left me and yuna wondering when daddy was gonna be back.” You weren’t even angry for yourself, sanzu wasn’t your boyfriend so that hole was already digged and burried. What really made you pissed is how he up and left leaving your daughter wondering why he hadn’t visited in such a long time, again.

Sanzu grumbled closing the fridge.“relax relax, enough with your grouching and shit. I was on a trip with mikey, just forgot my phone.”

“You were posting on your instagram story pictures of airplane food.”

there’s silence then a cough from him till he chuckles.“ah well, got the girl a cute little bunny stuffed animal. She still likes em at that age right?”

KEN RYUJI ( DRAKEN ! )

Might take the crown as one of the best baby fathers. He loves his baby girl, never misses any dance recital or holidays or birthdays to spend with his daughter.

his sweetness with his daughter almost makes you wanna get back together with him, it doesn’t help how even after the divorce he still was the gentleman he showed you from the beginning.

Always so helpful too when you look too drowsy and tired with eyebags.“I can always take sana an extra day you know? Don’t got shit on my weekend plans anyways” he joked at the end but still rubbing your shoulders, just because of how sweet he is.

You were sure that if you told him you have a date he’d tell you to enjoy yourself, much to his dismay.

RINDOU HAITANI

gangster in business but a loving father for his princess. He’s prone to missing a school play or small holiday but makes it up with gifts and bringing over his daughter’s favorite uncle ran.

as a ex husband he doesn’t step over the line, he knows your boundary. He doesn’t have an issue with you dating other men, even when you tell him you’ve met someone new he congratulates you.

“good for you, just make sure he ain’t no problem and I don’t got a problem.” you brushed it off as a half joke but he was very serious.

He uses the excuse of taking precautions for his daughters since he didn’t just want any type of man around her but he was also just curious what type of man you were dating so he hired a private investigator for this man.

when talking about it with sanzu and ran it’s laughable to the both of them.

“Stalking? Didn’t think this old flame you had for your ex wife was this bad.” sanzu says teasingly with a laugh at the end smacking rindou on the shoulder.

rindou scoffed.“this is just for precautions, I don’t want just some jackass around rika.”

“just sounds like you’re studying him, trying to see what you need to apply huh to get her back huh?” that gets sanzu a slap to the back of the head and a chuckle from ran.

MITSUYA TAKASHI

a amazing father to his baby girl, never misses a birthday, holiday. He’s always creating things for her instead of you spending money like a cozy sweater for winter and a purple stuffed bunny with button eyes for her to snuggle when he’s not there.

He knows his place as a ex husband well, he keeps his love for you at distant but still it shows with his actions. He knows how independent you are but still he likes to help you out.

“mitsuya I’m good I promise. I’m a big girl, a cold ain’t ever stop me from getting anywhere.” you say it with a runny red nose making him do a small smile at how cute you looked with it.

That explanation didn’t stop him from walking you back into your house with him following. Originally he came to check on you since the weather forecast predicted it would be a cold windy week, he thanked his conscience for checking up so now he could stop a sick you from going to work.

“nonsense, what kinda man would I be to just let you out in the cold with a runny nose huh?” he was already looking around on your living room couch for a cover to warm you up in.

“just stay there, can’t just let the mother of my kid just be sick.” a half joke from him while he went to look for tea in your cabinet.

In Japanese she's actually saying "I'm Sonic's honey"

It's just katakana, they're not using the Japanese word FOR honey like 蜜 "mitsu" or anything like that. She's literally making the sounds "haa" and "knee". So the colloquial intention is that she's saying she is Sonic's "honey" in the romantic sense.

You could argue it's essentially saying the same thing, but as the fucktard in that screenshot is demonstrating: "girlfriend" is a pretty loaded word. And clearly the concept of someone calling themselves someone else's girlfriend against their consent hasn't aged particularly well. But it was pretty common back in the day.

I would argue that in the original japanese, Amy calling herself Sonic's honeybunnybooboobear accomplishes the same thing of demonstrating that she is delusional about her relationship with Sonic, WITHOUT the baggage of designating herself by the romantic title of "girlfriend."

There IS a Japanese word that means girlfriend 彼女 "kanojo" which they COULD have had Amy say. But they didn't. They deliberately had her use the anglo term "honey" instead. The translators decided to change it to girlfriend, either oblivious or apathetic to the fact that the original japanese writing very specifically did NOT use the Japanese term for girlfriend. I personally consider that to be bad localization.

The character profile in Generations IS saying girlfriend ガールフレンド literally "Gārufurendo" again it's katakana. So that one's a pretty straight forward translation. It should be noted that Sonic Generations takes place after Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and the Black Knight, which both end with more or less explicit confirmation that Sonic and Amy were going out on dates. So while it is "self proclaimed" that's just because Sonic is uncomfortable with romantic entanglements at this point. That text is also not in either version of the Sonic X Shadow Generations rerelease, in the rerelease it says "ソニックに憧れて 理想の自分になろうとしている" which is something like she admires Sonic and wants to become her true self.

The English manual from Adventure can be pretty much completely ignored in my opinion, those things are always bullshit.

So overall conclusion: nothing was "amped up" except for the shoddy localization. The localization for Sonic in the mid 2000s was INFAMOUSLY bad (I will never forgive them for "goodbye forever Shadow the Hedgehog"). And the only issue with Amy calling herself his girlfriend is that it's been twenty years and everyone's a lot more of a stupid humorless pussy now, because that WASN'T a big deal back then.

Amy is as she always was and always will be. It's y'all who are the problem. This argument that Amy was subjected to character exaggeration during that era and it was "creepy" or "yandere" is so annoying stupid and wrong.

Projections by S E Porter. The ghost of a young woman murdered by a jealous sorcerer narrates his continued destructive obsession and her quest for revenge. *An effectively constructed look at toxic masculinity, could've been shorter imo.

Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao. After waking the legendary lost emperor, Zetian is forced to play along as his empress until they can overthrow the gods. *Was not expecting all the labor theory tbh but sure. A real 'leftist man who won't do the dishes' situation.

Taiwan Travelogue by Yang Shuang-Zi. Novel pretending to be translated autofiction by a Japanese visitor to colonial Taiwan, documenting her fraught relationship with her local interpreter. *Fun with metafiction, explores the limitations of translation and affection between colonizer and colonized.

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. A hacker and a courier team up to stop the release of a virus meant to hack people's brains. *Definitely helpful to read to orient me to other works in the genre but boy was it written by a white man in the early 90s.

Look Again by Elizabeth Trembley. Graphic memoir illustrating how the author's recollection of finding a corpse in the woods changed with each retelling, and how trauma impacts our memory.

Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky. A professor and political dissident is sent to a labor camp searching for the lifeforms that created signs of civilization on an alien world. *Tchaikovsky really loves speculative xenobiology huh. Also appreciated the full throated radicalism.

Magus of the Library by Mitsu Izumi. A young outcast trains to become one of the elite librarians who maintain the world's fragile peace. *My coworkers keep recommending library mangas. I didn't follow everything but the most recent volume featured the librarians debating their role in providing or restricting access to texts that foment bigotry and violence, which is a discussion our profession continues to have.

Mitsuya wasn’t one to get worked up very easily. Subtle teases here and there wouldn’t do it, you have to work harder than that to break through his libido core.
