Reblogged the post again about people wanting to make a new Raggedy Ann show, and boy do I have more thoughts!

I will. I admit. Sort of vague posting about specific ideas I've heard but at the same time I mean this to be a general statement and not criticism of anything in particular. It's just a trend that frustrates me.

What I see in a lot of suggested adaptations is a wide departure from not only superficial ideas of the characters and plot, but core themes that made up the very idea of the franchise. They were always, from the beginning, a little girl's toys brought to life with the imagination of her and her father, and when I see many concepts removing Marcella or any form of family from the story altogether, it makes me sad.

Because it marks the shift from the Raggedies as dolls who are alive, to the Raggedies as characters who also happen to be dolls.

In my personal opinion, that is one of the main issues plaguing the raggedy media that released post-70’s. People saw the two siblings themselves as the marketable entities, and the rest didn’t matter. It contributes to the flanderization of the characters and the stories as a whole, each generation of media getting us farther and farther away from the original concept as they pick only the most marketable bits. Natural selection via capitalism. Diluted into abstraction. Raggedy Ann is a franchise running on fumes at this point, all it has is that vague sense of nostalgia that gets fainter and fainter each passing generation.

It’s a similar thing to what has happened to the Winnie the Pooh franchise, they completely removed Christopher Robbin and most portrayals of the characters don’t go to any lengths to show that they were originally stuffed animals. But at least Pooh and his friends live in their own little fantasy world where removing the humans doesn’t make much of a difference. Raggedy Ann lives in our world.

And I’m not someone who thinks things always have to be exactly the same, I’d love to see new adaptations that play around with the setting!!! And the characters!!! And designs!!! And sure, the later books are more fantastical and usually take place outside in the Deep Deep Woods. But most people don’t even consider them in their plans.

It's clear many people's idea of the franchise is based on the movie, which is fair!!! The movie is in my opinion one of the better adaptations which manages to get the feel and charm of the characters being dolls and follow the themes of Camel With the Wrinkled Knees while still being it's own thing. Just like Gruelle's book it's wandering and nonsensical and goofy and the siblings get thrown from one wacky interaction to the next. It's a piece of raggedy media through and through, but I don't see much attention towards what makes it that way.

And I have to say, unfortunately, that many of these proposals remind me of one infamous piece of raggedy media, the 80's CBS cartoon. And I know the CBS series is bad for other reasons, of course. The writing sucks, the animation is worse, and the voice acting is grating. But. On top of all that, it doesn’t feel like a piece of Raggedy Ann media to anyone familiar with Gruelle’s work. There’s nothing that connects it to any of the franchise besides the existence of these characters, you could just swap them right out and it wouldn’t make any difference.

Same with the Chuck Jones specials. Sure, there are personality traits that follow, but they aren’t anything unique. You could put any characters in there.

Making a piece of raggedy media with no knowledge of what made the original books so timeless, I feel at best, you're going to make something like the Chuck Jones specials, and at worst, the CBS animated series. And to quote mod wowf: "and you're not Chuck Jones".

So. Idk. If you're going to make a proposal for a new piece of Raggedy Ann media, I think one should ask themselves why Raggedy Ann. We've had plenty of adaptations where the answer to that question was "they're popular", and I don't put much more trust in "I like them". It's not a criticism of anyone's specific ideas, I just don't think anyone is going to bother if the thing you're giving them is what they've already grown tired of. The siblings go on silly adventures, sure, but wasn't this originally about a little girl and her poppa who loved making up stories about her dolls? Is that not compelling anymore?

P.S. I say this out of affection. I want people's projects to succeed and I want them to be well appreciated by people outside the fandom and I want them to change the public perception of Raggedy Ann for the better! And that's why I have Opinions.

other anon gave no evidence to their claims, so im going off the info i was given along with the screenshots from before. they could easily have been read as someone just being blunt and not conveying tone well over text. its a different story if theyre threatening to kill someones whole family but obviously i have no evidence one way or the other. yes autism can explain why someone doesnt convey themselves the best; some of yall are baffled by people with disabilities/disorders when it isnt the completely flanderized and tiktokified presentation and immediately jump the gun to say that something is done maliciously when it can be explained by someone just not socializing the “correct” way.

its really really interesting to see people even here go to bat for them bc while i do think that the medium has potential (and even i've used them) by and large the sub has been oversaturated with a very specific brand of them that is neither clever, nor witty, nor funny or even entertaining, but just poor taste. a lot of it can basically be boiled down to female characters fighting over the male mc, and within that theres a lot of misogyny, sexual assault, fetish material, flanderization and general unpleasantness

Saw a post on my dash about Valve not making 3rd entries in game series with Portal as an example of the huge missed opportunity, but I honestly feel like out of every series Portal is the only one that doesn't NEED a sequel. Basically the only major plot-point that wasn't resolved was the Borealis which was meant to play into Half-Life 3, everything else - the state of Rattman, Wheatley being trapped in space, Chell just kinda being left in a corn field, GLaDOS deleting Caroline - they would all just kinda be cheapened immensely by expanding upon them explicitly (I honestly feel like the Portal universe is already experiencing severe Flanderization with all the spin-offs Valve releases to demo their new hardware).

Series like Left 4 Dead and Half-Life ended on cliffhangers, not to mention their core gameplay loops could be wholly expanded upon.

Team Fortress 2 also currently has a narrative cliffhanger and has since January 2017, not to mention that it's been so neglected and overrun with hackers and bots that I'm genuinely shocked that Valve hasn't received a class-action lawsuit considering the game is literally unplayable a significant portion of the time yet they regularly add new microtransactions to buy without ever updating the core game.

Day of Defeat is a cult game and considering its origins as a mod for Half-Life I feel like Valve is really missing an opportunity not creating a Source 2 sequel using Half-Life: Alyx as a framework.

Honestly it would even make more sense to make a Dota 3 even though Valve already updated Dota 2 to use a new engine and all.

Portal is like the only time Valve has EVER decided to make and conclude a series, and while I get that the universe lends itself to expansion that does make it sting a bit when it's the ONLY series they EVER make spin-offs for.

If you're wondering why I didn't mention Counter Strike, that's because a new CS game is actually coming out in a few months. And honestly considering the way Valve titled it they HAVE to be self aware by this point

Why Your Books Will Get Banned (Old Nanowrimo Post)

I used to post this game on Nanowrimo. I saved the text before Nanowrimo declared that the N-word spelled out was OK and this wasn’t a democracy (2010, in the archives, at the bottom). I figure it’s OK to post that unless they didn’t change their policy since then, because they want prejudice (though that wasn’t the worst of what they wouldn’t mod). Writing forums need to be run at the top by diverse people, and not just white women. Separate post though. BTW, I have witnesses who still remember this incident, so it isn’t slander. I was working on diversity in the writing forums before WeNeedDiverseBooks was a thing and squandered the opportunity by making it only YA. And I’ll still call them out for that. It got challenged, this thread once, much to the laughter of everyone. (for being anti-Christian lol) If the writer is out there that challenged the thread and somehow got published. Thumbs up, good for you. Maybe you revised since then? The thing I didn’t post with this post every year from 2005-2010 I did this post was I posted it because I wanted people to think hard on Free Speech and what it meant. So I’ll hardball it this time. As you read the list, think hard on who is gate keeping. And who has the right to gate keep. Is gate keeping a tool to oppress and do the power minorities have a right to use the same tool back? How many books don’t even get a chance to be published? I’d also add that chasing after individual authors for the last 10 years has done nothing to change the system. The percentages are the exact same. And how that affects what people in the future will think of us now. Can you write a book that won’t be challenged on these fronts at all? And if you’re going to say, “You’re anti-cancel culture” This was posted before “cancel culture” was a thing. This is more like an examination of the system of censorship itself. (Because look, I like examining systems.) If you want to take this list, BTW, this is years and years of my work reading through ALA who never compiled this list. I’d been following the list since High School when I did a banned book class (which was a fad of the time, I think). So... maybe, give me credit? I feel sad I have to say that. And thanks to Jakob Nielsen and my Typography prof for teaching me the way to format text.

Can't be sympathetic to Armenians or for portraying Azerbaijans as "savages" [book burner's words] (because apparently you will get a $12,700 price on your head to *cut your ear off* for being historically accurate.) QUILTBAG Issues: -- You can't talk about sexuality. (As in the willingness to have sex). -- You can't talk about sexual orientation. Magic Issues: You can't have talking animals. (Peter Rabbit.) Oh, no magic, no mention of witches, and no fantasy (That promotes Satanism and teaches them to do evil satanic spells).  (Harry Potter)

VIOLENCE Children can't do violence, especially to adults or to each other. Especially school violence. You can't have kids doing stunts or possibly hurting themselves. No realistic depictions of the Vietnam War. No dysfunctional families. -- You can't talk about child abuse.

Rose and her mom. TW: alcoholism

I’m a bit into Act 2 and at this point Dave and Rose are sharing screen time with John and wow a lot about Rose and her mom’s relationship is just out there plain to see.

Like. A lot of the fandom likes to flanderize Roxy & Mom Lalonde as being alcoholics and needless to say that’s very distasteful but what’s also distasteful is how people play off Rose’s distrust of her mom as “teehee Rose and mom keep trying to one up each other teehee.”

But like. As someone who grew up with an alcoholic parent (update: dad apparently quit drinking and never told me about it? We visited his mom on Christmas and he told her he hadn’t had a drink in 4 months and that’s how i found out...it’s been a month and I still don’t know how to feel about that) it really does fuck you up almost irreparably. Like I seriously cannot be around drunk people at all, even if they’re not the violent type because I’ll just break down in tears. I remember being in third grade when dad spilled beer on a library book (the smell didn’t come out needless to say) and I had to explain to the librarian the next day that everything was totally fine!!!! Dad just has a drink sometimes to relax!!!! Everything’s fine!!!!!!!!  🙃

While Dave, Rose, and John go out of their way to avoid their parents, it’s indisputable that in Dave and Rose’s case it’s because of trauma (but I’m talking specifically about Rose right now)

In Rose’s case I believe she’s been neglected especially in the emotional aspect. Contrary to popular belief, only children don’t always get babied and worshiped by their parents. Very often the pendulum goes to one extreme or the other: either you’re smothered and sheltered or ignored and left to your own devices. The latter is what happened with Rose. She was neglected which is a form of abuse, actually.

But what’s important to note is that Mom Lalonde evidently feels some remorse for neglecting Rose, hence all the ostentatious gifts. But since Rose doesn’t really know her mom (because if someone’s always drunk whenever they’re around you, you can’t know them. They’re not there! Especially when you’re a child. How is a child supposed to have the skills to deal with a drunk parent, especially if that drunk parent is the only one they have?)

And because Rose doesn’t know her mom she has no way to contextualize her behavior. Which is why she thinks her mom is doing all that she does just to piss her off or make fun of her. This is a seriously unhealthy living situation Rose is in. But the sad reality is that children like Rose and Dave are failed by the system. We always want to give parents the benefit of the doubt when that should actually go to kids! We are so quick to demonize kids and say that well the parents are trying when sometimes, maybe even most of the time, it’s exactly the opposite. We give parents way too much slack as a society. All my life I’ve heard my teachers, counselors, doctors, etc. say that I have such loving and supportive parents. But that wasn’t true and still isn’t. At least I don’t feel like it is.

My dad was 41 when he had me and he already had 2 other daughters before me with different women. My best friend is the same age as me and she already has one kid who’s turning 2 this year and she’s expecting another one in May. Is that the best situation to be in? No, of course not. And I’ll never understand why she chose to roll with it. But she’s doing a damn good job of raising her kids.

She never smokes when her son is in the room and she’s trying to cut back on smoking since she’s pregnant now. She keeps him away from her abusive mom as much as possible. She keeps him away from dangerous stuff like matches. She takes him to the doctor regularly. It’s wild how an 18 year old is being a better parent than a 59 year old man was and is.

When I was at the beach with her and her son a few months ago one night I had this very frightening epiphany. He’s going to grow up...and become a human being. He’s going to be sentient and form his own opinions about his mom and his dad and even me, and she’s raising him to think of me like an aunt. Every single decision we make for him and even for us while we’re around him affects him.  He’s a literal living breathing human being! His future is in our hands. I can only hope he turns out well. Raising a child is overwhelming, that’s certain. But you must make every effort to secure their safety, emotional, physical, or otherwise.
