Capturing the ambience of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (2002)

The original Splinter Cell wrings spooky atmosphere out of its relatively mundane settings. At a technical level, SC's sound design mixes positional sound effects and highly-detailed stereo ambience tracks.

This guide will cover the Windows version. However, note that there are minor discrepancies between it and the original Xbox release. You can remedy much* of this with the Enhanced SC patch.

*Not all maps are supported, due to challenges in the map porting process).

Capturing Footage

To disable the HUD, use drennan's toggle mod. To hide the player-character, open the in-game console with F2, type INVISIBLE 1, and press Enter.

You can freely move your character, and therefore the camera, by entering FLY or GHOST (for no-clip). Enter WALK to return to normal character control.

To save time, you optionally can bind these console commands to key presses via your SplinterCellUser INI file.

Optimizing Graphics

Follow the relevant section on PCGamingWiki. It will walk you through installing ThirteenAG's widescreen fix and dgVoodoo.

This guide also addresses numerous settings only found only in INI files. The most important of these is ForceShadowMode, which must be set to "Buffer" mode for faithful rendering on modern systems.

Extracting Sounds

I explored two options: DecUbiSnd and vgmstream. The former can read STREAM.SS0 directly; you'll find SC's stereo ambient streams there. Maps generally organize their streams as three layers, the first of which is used for music - but it varies.

Use the Save As option to extract WAV/OGGs of your desired streams.

vgmstream can extract Splinter Cell's streams and sound effects* via MAPS.SM0. I recommend using the Foobar component to find the sounds you want.

Once you've identified their desired indicies, you can Convert to WAV inside Foobar - just be sure to disable looping from the component's settings. You can also use vgmstream's command line interface e.g.:

vgmstream-cli.exe -i -s 6070 -o embassy.wav "F:\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell\Sounds\MAPS.SM0"

The resulting WAVs will contain as many as three stereo layers, for a total of six channels.

*Note: sound effects can be played back at various speeds in-game, thanks to Unreal Engine

Appendix 1: Viewing level sounds with Audacity

Because they are apparently simple WAVs, it's possible to view MAPS.SM0's content in Audacity. Import the file as Raw Data, using the settings below.

You'll find the sounds are laid out chronologically, with Presidential Palace last.

hey, a Kendratello Au question:

if Donnie DOES manage to somehow recover from Kendra and realize that he was being manipulated and used by her, will he develop some kind of trauma or PTSD? Or something probably worse than that?

Draxum works in tandem with Leo to watch over Donnie’s health. But Leo let’s Draxum take the lead. They’re more worried about the immediate concerns, like Donnie’s fever, and mental health. His ninpo will grown stronger once those things are addressed. Splinter is pulled in five different directions. Donnie is his main focus, but Raph, April, and Mikey are ignoring their own health and need to be watched closely as well. He’s trusting Draxum in the first few days, and provided support where he’s better suited. They will all be needed at some point. Splinter knows this will be a looooong recovery, and keeps trying to remind the others that they need to rest too.

They weren’t that bothered by the idea, when Kendra pitched it. But seeing how wrecked Donnie became, they started to feel bad. Which is why, when the family saves Donnie, Jeremy and Jason grab all of Donnie’s tech and find Raph to return it. Jeremy even grabbed S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N.’s AI chip and removed all of Kendra mods. Donnie will still have to rebuild him, but he will be just like before.

When Raph brings Donnie his shell, Donnie’s thoughts are “at least I’ll have some protection when I irritate them too much.”
