“Is this…a picture of us, Michelangelo?” Splinter breathed, when he could find his voice again over his racing heart. The little one fidgeted, eyes flicking between his caretaker and the paper with uncharacteristic shyness.

“Mhmm. I tried real good but I-I might’ve maybe messed th’ names up.”

Splinter paid no mind to the misspelled “lelo”, “raf” and “donmee”. His attention lay with the “papa—” scribbled out in favor of “da—”, which in turn was cut off for a hesitant “spinterr”.

His heart wasn’t just racing. It soared.

“I think you had my name right the first time…my son.”

Apparently when my younger brother was just born my mom found him napping with his blanket fully covering him, and she pulled back the sheet (worried he couldn't breathe or something) to find him fully awake staring at her.
