And Bucky gets it, what Sam wants, why he didn’t want to ask. Because this is a little different than their usual. Though really not all that dissimilar to the times they’ve eventually fallen asleep together on the couch. “You don’t want to be alone?” After a mission, Sam is acting odd. Bucky doesn't know what's wrong but he wants Sam to be alright.

Bucky crosses the room, goes to Sam. Sam looks at him as Bucky takes a hold of the towel wrapped around his waist, pulls it free, places a hand on his bare, still-damp skin. Sam's meetings in D.C. don't go well. Bucky helps him work his frustrations out.

And maybe there’s some truth to it’s always in the last place you’d look.

That seems to be the thing that breaks the ice between them; Bucky's never really hung out with Sam before, past being jammed into a too-small car for six hours and then two uncomfortable months in a safehouse trying not to get on each other’s last nerve. Now they’re getting lunch or coffee every few days. Sam falls asleep on Bucky’s couch three more times. Bucky joins him and Steve a couple of times on their morning run.

He doesn’t notice, is the thing; doesn’t notice how ever since Sam slept on his couch that night he’s been letting Bucky closer bit by bit, that as Bucky’s been wondering about the boundaries and structures of friendship, Sam’s been drawing in.

Hi! I'm looking for a fic I read ages ago, but can't find. Sam and Bucky were having this friends with benefits thing, but Sam ended it because he wanted more. Then Sam went on this mission on another planet with Nick Fury of all people and something happened where Fury returned and Sam didn't. Bucky was of course distraught and waiting and waiting and during that time found out from Sarah of Sam’s three miracles and how there may not be a fourth one. And then Sam miraculously returns and Bucky raced towards him and proposed
