Common Game Assessments
Tumblr media
Common game assessments are Quizizz, Kahoot!, Gimkit, and Blooket. These are good for checking for understanding, recall, review. A lot of the time these are for formative assessment pieces. However, during COVID’s distance learning, a lot of these also got switched into summative assessments because we weren’t in person with students. These were tools that students already knew and then just turned into tests and quizzes, just like self-grading Google Forms. In my experience, when we returned to the building, we still weren’t allowed to share materials (so no paper passed back and forth), so these tools still held their place as all forms of assessment. Even now, I know people who will still use these as summative assessment tools because they can grade themselves and give so much more data on students than a paper/pencil test.

Personally, digital might be the way to go. I've kept "house points" in the past where I've pitted my classes against each other and kept points for things like homework completion, class averages on assignments, etc. It was nice to have an in-classroom posting and scoreboard (mocked HP), but they also appreciated having everything also digitally when they could access it from anywhere, and they always made sure to let me know when the scoreboard wasn't updated!
Peer Review Choice Project
For the choice project, I have decided to do:
Chapter Choice + Student Created Notes A and B
Blog Post - What play can teach us about writing
Blog Post - Game Analysis
Create a Game
In creating a game, I am thinking about doing something that has to do with grammar and syntax. I have in the past taught one grammatical pattern per week (about 5-10 min per day) and kids have really enjoyed it and found it helpful for their writing. In thinking about a game, I don’t want the game objectives to be an external objective. I want the grammar-learning to be the focus of the game. I’m wondering, in everyone’s experience, if I should make this a digital game or “on-paper” game. Additionally, I’m also wondering if anyone has suggestions of what sources I should look at (from class) that you think would give me a better view into making the game.
Thanks!

Start up my computer and my Win key just doesn't work anymore. My keyboard just decided to give up and that binding stopped working completely.
That might not sound like a problem, but I'm on Linux with Swaywm and hotkeys are basically the only way for me to navigate.
I am physically unable to open any program without pressing either Win+D to search for it or Win+Enter to open the terminal and then launch it manually.
That was a nightmare! The crappy solution was to just switch from Windows Left to Option (or whatever the apple version is), both are Mod4 so it doesn't matter. Not *super* willing to recommend a Keychron C3 pro anymore, lol =|:T

This MIT keyboard from 1978 can have 4000 different inputs! 🤯
A keyboard shortcut in Linux (in my case, Ubuntu Jammy with Gnome) can look like this: Mod2+Mod4+Super+Hyper+Left shift
Which uses terminology originating from this old keyboard. I was confused, "I don't see any keys labeled like that?" but I guess I just have to figure it out.

I definitely agree! As teachers, we have so many things that are pushed on us through PD to use in our classrooms because they are the new thing that is going to revolutionize education. However, this chapter makes it more clear as to what using games in the classroom should really be like. I wonder if these companies making these "learning games" are aware of this type of information? But I also usually only find myself using games for review... Something I would like to change as well for the coming school year.
GBL...What is New
I feel like this chapter emphasizes the point of why we use games in the classroom. Whether we do it to spice up the environment and motivation of our students or if we use it as a review, teachers are supporting game based learning. BUT after reading this chapter, I feel like I have learned how to accurately and intentionally include game based learning in the classroom. By looking at the design elements of game-based learning, I believe that I will be able to create games using these elements and be mindful of the learning outcomes that I want my students to foster throughout the process. Also, I found it interesting to learn more about the types of game-based learning. You can use game based learning to prepare for future learning (like an activating strategy), for learning the new knowledge, for practicing the knowledge, and for reviewing. I don't know why, but I typically only use games for review. Changing this perspective is innovative for my curriculum.

This is Jeff Stinco in Mod4.
I am so sorry that this is a horrible recreation of Jeff, his face doesn't look very good, and we are in need for somebody to create a Stardoll dedicated to Jeff that will portray him way better than what my aunt did here.
So if anyone wants to make a Stardoll out of Jeff Stinco, please respond to this post and I will connect with you shortly.
We need somebody to create a dress up game dedicated to Jeff Stinco.
I am so upset that nobody has done one just for him, which sucks, obviously.
In my honest opinion, I am tired of GirlsGoGames putting out games with the same characters and the same tropes over and over again.
Like, I am honestly tired of Elsa from Frozen being in every single game on every girl game website so far.
Don't get me wrong, I like Elsa and she is a great Disney princess, but I'm sick and tired of every single one of these girl game websites creating games dedicated to her, Anna, Rapunzel, and Miraculous Ladybug.
Like, that alone is just so annoying and so irratating that Elsagate had to take over for GirlsGoGames and the other girl game websites back in 2014-2017. Those were some pretty disturbing games back then!
Then there's the games with Ellie and Baby Hazel. I fucking hate those characters so much, they should just not make every game be more or so dedicated to them on GirlsGoGames.com.
Like, where is the original celebrity dress up games at?????
Where is Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears at?????
Why isn't there a single dress up game dedicated to Jeff Stinco?????
Besides, why wouldn't anyone create a dress up game for Jeff Stinco?????
Honestly, it is so upsetting to see how far GirlsGoGames and every other girl game website has become now in 2023.
If anyone wants to create a Stardoll avatar and a dress up game dedicated to Jeff Stinco, please let me know in the comments below.
Thank you.

Absolutely saw some of the same connections. Feedback in games helps the player get better, just like feedback in writing helps the writer get better. I often wonder why students take the feedback the get from their games, learn from it, then apply it to their game when they don't so the same with writing. I don't know about your students, but mine seem to see writing feedback as negative (even though it's not a correctness grade, it's more of a "you tried" grade). I wonder if turning writing into more of a game would help bridge that gap?
Original Content Writing Module 4
In Chapter 20 of GBL, I was seeing a lot of ideas about formative assessment. This is HUGE in writing. Within this class, we practice this through our tumblr posts when we peer review. As a teacher, I constantly give formative feedback on writing to support students in perfecting a final draft. Feedback throughout the writing process helps learners understand and reflect on what choices they need to make to be successful. In both a game and a writing assignment, learners put their ideas forth to receive either positive or negative feedback to dictate the next step of the process.

Games like Kahoot!, Gimkit, Blooket, and Quizizz feel like they are in the GBA family, but students know there is an assessment piece attached to it, so it is really game-based assessment? Or is it just not stealth assessment?
How are teachers able to use games like Plants vs. Zombies 2 in the classroom when we can’t get any of the breakdown feedback about student problem solving? Because it would be interesting to see some of that data.

Love the game aspect you're going to implement. Are their characters going to be able to grow over the time in your class or do they stay the same? Just thinking it might be cool to add some sort of way to gain XP or different skills as they complete classwork, or earn specific grades, or bonus questions so they feel more attachment to the character if you weren't already thinking that.
Choice Assignment
Right now I am planning to do the 4 blog post prompts:
Possibilities of Play
What Play Can Teach Us About Writing
Value of Studying Games as a Graduate Student
Game Analysis
Then for the last choice I am planning on sharing a section of the game I am implementing into my classroom this upcoming year. This game has students creating a character, complete with slimmed down stats and skills that will fall into a particular class, as well as backstories.
Then as we read different material over the year the characters will be used to overcome challenges from the literature. How would their group have approached the Green Knight? What about Grendel? I want to use these opportunities to review literature, have structured writing exercises, and have some fun rolling big foam dice. I hope that allowing students to utilize their characters/avatars in the classroom will allow for them to feel less vulnerable and critically think and take risk when it comes to the themes and stories that we will read.

M57: The Ring Nebula from Hubble Image Credit: NASA, ESA, Hubble Legacy Archive; Processing: Judy Schmidt
Explanation: Except for the rings of Saturn, the Ring Nebula (M57) is probably the most famous celestial circle. Its classic appearance is understood to be due to our own perspective, though. The recent mapping of the expanding nebula's 3-D structure, based in part on this clear Hubble image, indicates that the nebula is a relatively dense, donut-like ring wrapped around the middle of a (American) football-shaped cloud of glowing gas. The view from planet Earth looks down the long axis of the football, face-on to the ring. Of course, in this well-studied example of a planetary nebula, the glowing material does not come from planets. Instead, the gaseous shroud represents outer layers expelled from the dying, once sun-like star, now a tiny pinprick of light seen at the nebula's center. Intense ultraviolet light from the hot central star ionizes atoms in the gas. The Ring Nebula is about one light-year across and 2,500 light-years away.

You Mod4+l over to the pdf then press Ctrl-p. A dialog box blinks into momentary existence before dismissing itself. In the corner of your room, the jaquard loom clatters into life.
Finally! It took me forever to copy the Jacquard Loom PPD file into my CUPS configuration by hand out of a manual I salvaged from the factory file cabinet.
