Babylon's 6 D&D Tips
I DM’d D&D for ten years. I started in middle school, and I kept it up until my sophomore year of college. This is my mini-guide for what the game is, what it isn’t, and how to play it well. So. From the top.
Tip 1: Don't make your main storyline time dependent.
D&D is an amazing open-world experience. You can pick at any detail. Nothing is a non-interactable part of the scenery. If there’s a sewer manhole, you can lift it up and climb down. If there’s a house, you can look inside and rob it. If there’s an NPC that you meet at the market, you can follow them home and see their whole life. Their parents, or their partner, their trade - all of it. It will be made up on the fly by some sort of reasonably skilled improv speaker, but it will also exist after that. That’s how the world is built. That’s the secret sauce that makes D&D beautiful.
If your plotline is too urgent, it kills those opportunities. The worst example of this that I have isn’t even from D&D, but FO4. The game is clearly built around exploration and adventure. The plot is built around rescuing your kidnapped baby. There’s a lot of tension between those goals. The plot does not work with the game mechanics, and it's really, really, jarring.
Be wary of doing that. It's surprisingly easy.
Tip 2: Don't set up giant, epic, fantasy battles between multiple armies.
D&D is not a very good epic-battle simulator. There are games that have streamlined combat mechanics to allow for whole armies to fight, but D&D is very detail oriented, and trying to control too many people at once makes combat slow to a crawl. That very creative DM who can tell you every detail of an NPC’s life is also just not very good at multitasking.
If you really, really want to - fine. But you should be ignoring standard mechanics when you do so. Move to a “cinematic mode” and just go by vibes. And generally, take a moment to “get” the game before modifying it. If the kind of plot you really want is urgent, and involves epic scale armies, maybe look into different RPG systems. D&D specializes in exploration and small, focused parties. Using it for things outside of that is kind of like hitting nails with a wrench.
Tip 3: Don't prepare your plot like it's a book. Kill your lore codex.
D&D is a collaborative storytelling adventure. That's the secret sauce. Writing out codexes and trying to crystallize the world before you start playing ruins the collaborative element. It’s genuinely better if you build as you go. It lets your players give input. And it saves you a lot of time. Why bother trying to write up who the Mayor of Snoresville is if there’s a good chance your party never even talks to him?
(I would also apply this to writing in general. If you want to write all of your world's lore before starting your book, you'll never start your book. And you'll go crazy. Fear the lore codex.)
Tip 4: Prepare your combats and your NPCS rigorously, but generically.
This ties in to Tip 3. If you spend a lot of time preparing the lore of the Bandit Leader of Redgrove, things like his family history, or his trauma, or his deep-down character motivations, and then the party never goes to Redgrove, it all goes to waste. D&D evolves rapidly and chaotically, so building things in a modular, reusable way really pays off.
So. I tend to have two big pools for my NPC work. One is a character sheet pool. I keep it small and focused. I can generalize most melee classes ahead of time, so I can have an Archer, a Brawler, a Tank, and some Generalist Infantry. That’s like, 80% of your martial enemies, done. Spellcasters are a bigger pain in the ass, but a few pre-mades thrown into a campaign pays off if you know your themes. If you’re dealing with a death cult, make some death clerics. A dragon will probably have sorcerer acolytes.
My second pool is a pool of character mannerisms. Some should absolutely be practiced ahead of time. Figure out what mannerisms make your villain really pop. And if the party skips that villain, just move those mannerisms to some new guy down the line and you’ll still be fine. Nothing wasted. A lot of the mannerisms are going to be picked with no heads up when the party does something weird, like following a random merchant around for a few days just to see how they live. You can get through almost all of those extremely well with just variations on the 4 humors, the 3 socioeconomic classes, and regional dialects.
Tip 5: Give your players permission to inject themselves into the world.
It is common for people to over-formalize the rules and responsibilities of “being a player” vs. “being a DM.” I think the most common way to phrase it is something like “The Players are in charge of their characters and their backstories, the DM is responsible for the worlds and its NPCs, and both need to stay in their lanes.”
It’s isn't just better to mix it, it's necessary.
Failing to share these roles forces the world to exist in a crystallized state before the campaign even starts - at least if you want to integrate backstories into the plot. Groups that fail to do this can often feel like the characters were born the day the campaign began, and did nothing interesting beforehand.
So, for DMs: Don’t be afraid of trying to inject NPCs and details of this world into your player's past. Imagine that your party rogue goes into a town and finds a fence for selling some stolen trinkets. Maybe, have the fence recognize the rogue. “Gods of fire, it’s McClellan. I haven’t thought about you since the candy-rat incident. You took a real beating making sure I got away that day. Glad to finally have a chance to pay you back!”
Now, the rogue still has a choice here. They can say something like “Ah, this guy is mistaking me for someone else, but I can roll with it to get a better deal.” It’s their character, and their choice. But they can also go, hey, I do know this guy. I was apparently part of something called “The candy-rat incident.” I can decide how I know this guy, and where, and for how long, and what that incident was. That’s not less control - that’s more!
And for players: Don’t be afraid of injecting your past into the world. Maybe you’re a fighter in a wartorn setting and you run into a group of deserters robbing refugees by the roadside. The DM has clearly planned this as some vindication, some enemies you get to thrash without feeling bad. But you have different plans. You take your helmet off, and you look the deserter’s leader in the face, and you say “Jack, you saved my life back on Stone Ridge. You were a good man once. You could be one again. Ride with us.”
Now that's powerful stuff. Do you even know what Stone Ridge is? Hell no. Are you gonna? Hell yeah. And what you just did was way better than the DMs plan of bonking bad guys to feel good. You changed the writing of the world, commandeered an NPC, and made the whole encounter far more interesting.
Tip 6: Ignore all portrayals of D&D in the media.
The best players that I get are people with no experience with D&D of any kind. The second best are those that are willing to drop their preconceptions at the door and just play. The worst are people that have seen D&D portrayed somewhere and are insistent on imitating the portrayal. The exact nature of the failure varies - at worst, they’ve seen some kind of tongue-in-cheek parody, like order of the stick, and then hyperfocused on all the worst parodied aspects as the whole point of the game. D&D is not about outsmarting the mechanics (which is trivially easy, and largely pointless - it just makes your own storytelling less fun), nor is about turning everything into shallow tropes about Horny Bards and Dumb Fighters and Insufferable Paladins. At best, they’ll have seen some kind of ultra-cinematic example of D&D played on a podcast, where the DM has a theatre degree and ever party member is a professional actor. Those people are nice, but they often have unrealistic expectations.
#d&d#DM tips#player tips#collaborative storytelling#I mostly played 3.5#and then later pathfinder#I tried 5e but i never did it long enough to get super good at it#the game economy being so vague put a lot of pressure on DMs which i didnt like#but it also removed a constant source of dumb shenanigans#something something these are just my opinions#but it was good at what i did#and im cocky enough to say ignore at your own peril#a player that can't be trusted with some creative control of a minor bandit is a player that shouldnt be in the game#and if you have a good player#hell#let them try out the bbeg

LN4 and 'napping together'

He’s home.
Every triple header you can’t attend gets a little troublesome; the apartment feels lifeless, the walls lackluster of laughter bouncing around. The puzzle the two of you had yet to complete lay dormant on the dining room table; a stark reminder that every meal without your boyfriend was eaten curled up on the modular sofa you’d also been sleeping on, the only comfort being a fluffy blanket, the smell of him already fading.
The door had clicked, the text messages having faded since he had stepped off the plane, obviously more focused on returning back to you than responding to your questions. You didn’t care, not when you reached the entry foyer and saw him; tired, sore but smiling. His suitcase and travel bag faded into nothingness as a choked sob left your lips, running down the hall in sock feet and leaping at your boyfriend, two strong arms holding you against him, hiding his own head in your neck.
“I’m home.” He’d whispered between shivers, overwhelmed from feeling your body pressed against his for the first time in over three weeks. Between whispers, in regards to how much they’ve missed one another, he’s pressing kisses against your face, your hands finding and threading through his curls, pleading he wouldn’t disappear without you again, at least not for a week.
Lando is so gentle, he can feel you shivering, probably from the lack of sleep and the realization he’s returned. It takes a few moments, unraveling yourself from one another, letting him link your fingers together, guiding you down the hall and back into the lounge. His heart melts when he sees the blankets cocooned into a makeshift bed like you had done oh-so-often for movie nights.
“Have you been sleeping out here?” He coaxes, shifting from where you had been standing next to him, clamoring into the modular setup, immediately wiggling out of his shoes and hoodie, leaving him shirtless and oh-so-cozy. Lando didn’t miss the blush that tinted your cheeks, both from his toned chest and heavy question.
“The bed felt…so empty without you.” The whisper left your lips. You hadn’t slept the first night, reaching out constantly to feel his warmth and shattering each time it hit that he wasn’t there. He’d never admit, but Lando had the exact same problem, having to physically exhaust himself into sleep. It would never come out, he’d never want his sweet girl to worry. Instead, he wordlessly raises his two arms, a signal for you to come and join him in the makeshift bed; he really doesn't have the energy to haul the cushions and blankets back to his actual bedroom.
It takes you less than a moment to react, bundling straight into his arms, both of you soft with giggles and gentle kisses. It’s like fitting a piece back together, your head immediately rests against his sternum, arms encircling you and holding you tighter. He’s warm. Oh, so warm and so comfortable that you can’t help but feel your eyes droop, getting heavier with the sleep debt you had gained. Delirium begins to overtake you both, adamant on napping rather than talking, it happened after years together.
“Do you want dinner?” You’d asked, voice teetering on the edge of sleep, only drawn closer when Lando’s hand reaches out, cupping your cheek and pressing a gentle kiss to the tip of your nose.
“We’ll order later. Right now I just want you.” He presses a final kiss to your temple, lying back into the blankets and dragging you with him. It’s less than a few minutes before sleep overtakes you both, eyes heavy with only one thought running through you both, that you’re home.

New To This - Chapter 2

A/N: Thank you all for the wonderful response to the first chapter, I really appreciate it!
Enjoy Chapter 2!
--------------------

Home for Delilah was a small, aging modular house tucked away in an urban suburb in eastern Pensacola. It previously belonged to Andre’s father, and it served as a fairly decent abode for the young couple ever since they got engaged nearly two years ago. Andre had been living there for a decade, moving in to work at his uncle’s auto shop immediately after graduating from high school. It wasn't the most luxurious of dwellings, but it beat the miniscule space she’d been crammed in with her father, mother and older sister for years, so Delilah really couldn't complain.
Rolling her eyes at her mother’s wedding-laden text message, she pulled her keys from her pocket, guided it into the lock and pushed open the door. Closing it firmly behind her, she leaned back against it, shutting out the rest of the world for the rest of the day. Hanging her hooded jacket on the hook by the door, she kicked off her sneakers and dumped them in the corner along with her gym bag, knowing she put them in their proper place, but was too tired and hungry to worry about that right then.
She wandered into the kitchen, ignoring the small stack of unopened bills on the countertop, and opened the refrigerator. The three pieces of leftover chicken and half-full bottle of red wine wasn’t going to cut it. Sadly, ordering takeout was a bit of a luxury right now, so she had to make do with whatever she could find in the refrigerator and the pantry. Luckily, her mother had ensured that both of her daughters became creative enough cooks to see through any food shortage, which, these days, occurred more often than Delilah liked to admit. So, retrieving as many ingredients as she could find, she set about making dinner for herself and Andre, a peace offering of sorts after their turbulent morning.
It had been a stressful last few months, combining her wrestling classes with numerous double shifts at both her jobs to make ends meet. Adding the equally demanding task of planning her wedding was not helping. More frustrating, at least, according to Andre, was the fact that their nuptial plans were being delayed by her so-called ambitions, chipping away at what little income they both earned. Delilah truly wished he could see the big picture, or at the very least, show a little more support. He, of all people, should have her back. That the rest of the townspeople thought she was out of her mind didn’t mean that he had to agree with them.
Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard the front door open. Knowing who it was, her insides clenched a little with apprehension, wondering, perhaps hopeful even, that her fiancé would be in a reconciliatory mood. The footsteps coming from the living area got louder as they got nearer. Delilah diverted her focus from the saucepan to watch Andre stroll into the kitchen. and despite the tension that had been brewing between them all day, her heart couldn’t help but welcome the affection that rushed over her for him.
Andre Gibson had been every girl’s fantasy once upon a time. Still was, if Delilah was being honest. He was yet to lose any of the physical traits that made him so desirable back in high school. Just hitting six feet, his body was lean and toned from years of doing most of the heavy lifting at his father’s landscaping business. They were inseparable when they were younger; the best thing about school for her was sneaking out to hang out with him, making out with him in the bleachers after basketball games. It was like Heaven for Delilah, elated to be in a spot so many girls were dying to be in. The romance continued after high school, to Delilah’s pleasant surprise, culminating in his proposal two years ago on her twenty-second birthday. And now here they were, living together as soon-to-be man and wife.
“Hey,” he mumbled, rubbing a dirt-streaked hand over his tired face. His worn shirt was unbuttoned with his toned abs on display, and he dumped his backpack on the ground against the wall by the back door.
“Hey,” Delilah returned his greeting. “You’re home early. How did your day go?”
His tired sigh preceded his reply. “Same old, same old. We had one breakthrough though. Pops and I finally completed Mrs. Whelan’s garden.”
“Oh yeah, I remember you talking about that,” she said, stirring the contents in the skillet. “That’s great. I’m glad to know you finally pulled it off.”
“Same here, babe.” He came up behind her, peering over her shoulder. “What’cha got cookin’?”
“Improvising a little with the leftover chicken,” she started, pausing when his hands cupped her hips and his lips met her shoulder. And right away, she knew what this was. This was his way of apologizing about this morning; showing her affection without saying a word. That was the thing about her relationship with Andre. There was something special about the way that they didn't have to speak to know what the other was thinking. They fought, then acted like nothing had ever happened when they got back together. She felt he was in the wrong for this argument, but she wasn’t expecting an apology…no apologies were ever really exchanged afterwards…Everything just went back to normal, seemingly papering over the cracks, in Delilah’s humble opinion. But it kept the peace, so it was better if she kept that little discrepancy to herself.
“Now that we know how your day went, you wanna hear about mine?” she asked.
Chuckling to himself, Andre pushed gently away from her. “Sure, babe,” he said, “How was training today?”
“Tough as fuck,” Delilah grumbled, as Andre grabbed a glass and held it underneath the kitchen faucet. “Tank’s not letting up, even with two days to go till my match. But you’ll never believe who showed up at the warehouse today.”
“You really want me to guess?”
“Maybe not,” she conceded with a giggle, her eyes brightening with excitement as she recalled their brief meeting. “Jey Uso! Jey Uso of all people, Dre!”
Andre raised an eyebrow in confusion. “Am I supposed to know who that is?”
“He’s a big shot in the WWE. One of the top guys in the entire company,” she explained, even though it would most likely fall on deaf ears. “And the coolest part is he’s from right here. Raised in Pensacola just like we were.”
“That’s nice,” Andre responded with a nonchalant, almost bored tone as he settled down at the kitchen table. Delilah was well aware that Andre didn’t watch wrestling. He always called it fake and childish, but that opinion changed slightly when Delilah returned home from her very first class with bruises all over her body. She’d hoped he’d take interest in it, if only for her sake, but that didn’t look like it was happening anytime soon.
She finished making dinner and set a plate in front of him, shredded caramelized chicken with white rice and fresh tomato salad. It wasn’t gourmet, but Delilah had done what she could with what little they had. “Mm, smells good,” Andre complimented, grabbing his cutlery to dig in. Delilah sat beside him, casting pensive glances at him as she ate, pondering the right time to ask him a burning question. It was a few bites into her meal when she decided now was the right time.
“You know, you still ain’t told me if you’re coming to see my match or not,” she spoke up.
Andre’s cutlery ceased their skittering across his plate, and he averted his gaze. Delilah detected his answer right away, and her shoulders dropped. “You’re not,” she sighed, shaking her head.
“I didn’t say that,” he said quickly, “But you do understand why I won’t be able to make it, babe. You know what work is like for me these days.”
“I’ve been talking about this for weeks, Dre! You know how important this is to me! It’s my very first match! It’s in two days. Or did you forget that too?” Angrily, she stabbed her fork into a piece of chicken, trying not to imagine it was her fiancé’s eyeball. “You know what? Forget it. You don’t gotta come if you don’t want to.”
Andre started to counter her, but stopped, thinking twice about it. The last thing he wanted was yet another fight, because this was exactly how it always started. They’d been arguing a lot lately, and honestly? He was already over it. “Look…I’ll do my best to make it to your match,” he said.
“Yeah right,” Delilah rolled her eyes, ignoring the glimmer of hope that bloomed within her. “I ain’t holdin’ my breath, that’s for sure.”
“Come on, babe, I’m for real. I’ll clear out my schedule. I’ll set a reminder on my phone and stuff. I promise. Just gimme the details and I’m on it.” He stared at her with pleading eyes, determined to keep the peace between them. It had been a long, tense day, and in-house tension was the last thing he needed.
Delilah smiled, finally. “Fine. I can work with that,” she agreed. “Now finish up. Your mom sent me a few ideas on places we can have the reception. And after that…If you’re a good boy, maybe later, I’ll show you a new move I learned today.” She leaned closer to him, whispering in his ear, “In bed.”
The hand she’d placed on his thigh suggested volumes, and the tantalizing prospect made Andre smile, “Sounds like a plan, babe.” And with that, things were back to normal.
Or so they both wanted to believe.
-----------------
The next morning…
Good thing she didn’t hold her breath in the end.
As Delilah dumped the heavy weights on the ground, she let out a loud growl, trying to release the tension surging through her body. She paced back and forth frantically as she glanced around the small gym, looking for what else to take out her anger on. Every muscle in her body was begging for mercy, but she couldn't stop. She had to take her frustrations out on something, otherwise she would take it out on someone, preferably Andre. Luckily, the gym was relatively empty, sparing some poor soul from her unwarranted wrath.
Fucking coward. He couldn’t even tell her to her face that he’d changed his mind about coming to her show. If that was even his intention in the first place. He’d scribbled some lame ass excuse on a piece of paper while she slept, and left it on his side of the bed before scurrying off to work. He was long gone by the time she woke up, presenting her with fewer reasons to trust her future husband.
The music blaring in her ears made it impossible for Delilah to hear or see anyone around her. And the anger she was feeling made her essentially ignore her surroundings. So it took her completely aback when she turned towards the direction of the punching bags only to run smack into a brick wall. "What the fuck!"
Josh smirked slightly as he took a step back, watching her yank the buds out of her ears. "Ay, my bad, on me," he apologized, chuckling at the discombobulated look on her face. "Thought you saw me comin’."
"Clearly not. You ain’t that hard to miss," Delilah snapped, tearing the fingerless gloves off her hands. "What are you even doing here?" she shot, noting vaguely that he didn’t look dressed for a workout. The man who had, just the day before, seemed imposing and breath-taking, was now just another testosterone-filled asshole standing in her way, like her fiancé.
Josh crossed his tattooed arms and stared at her. "Relax," he smiled. "Thought I would stop by and see how you were feelin' about tomorrow night, but I guess that's pretty obvious," he said, eyeing her up and down. He’d been on the mark about her body…bangin’ was an understatement. He forced himself to maintain eye contact to avoid staring at her nipples protruding through her sports bra.
Delilah grabbed the bottle of water sat on the nearby bench, unscrewing the cap and taking a few gulps. There was more than one reason she was feeling the way she was, and none of them put the butterflies in her stomach at ease. "I don’t even know why I’m trippin’," she shrugged. "I'm only jobbin' out anyway. Why would I want him to see me lose?"
“Want who to see you lose?” Josh inquired.
Delilah pursed her lips, contemplating whether she should answer or not. “My fiancé.”
He regretted asking. “Oh. Right. Tank said something like that,” he mumbled.
Delilah stared up at the huge man with narrowed eyes. “You and Tank talked about me?”
“Not the way you think,” Josh quickly clarified at her suspicious expression. “He has a lot of faith in you, which is why you ain’t gotta worry so much about tomorrow. You’ll be fine.”
"You make it sound so easy-breezy,” Delilah groaned, shoving her sweaty hair away from her equally sweaty face. “Maybe if one of us got hurt, the fans will have something to remember the match by."
Now it was Josh's turn to roll his eyes. Damn rookies. "Yeah, then you’ll be the fragile weakling nobody wanna work with. I know Tank taught you better than that," he countered. "Look, it ain’t all about winning and losing, not right now anyway. It’s about making an impression on your audience. The fans need a reason to keep watching you, and the suits need a reason they should hire you to wrestle. So everything you do in that ring matters. As long as your match is entertaining as fuck and you don’t kill anyone, that’s all they’ll care about."
Raising an eyebrow, Delilah chuckled. "Right. I’ll keep that in mind for tomorrow," she said. Biting her lip in contemplation, she met his eyes again and fought the urge to swoon.
"Ay, it’s okay to be nervous. You gotta phase that out, though,” he added. “And whatever you got going on at home, put that shit aside until after the match."
It was a little unnerving how well he’d read her. “Easier said than done,” she scoffed.
For a second, Josh thought about prying, but decided against it. "Wanna know what I was like the morning of my very first match?" He watched her countenance perk up, giving him a curious half-smile that he thought was insanely attractive. "I got so nervous, thinkin’ and worryin’ about the match and shit, that I forgot my bag with my wrestling gear in it. Boots and all. I didn’t realize it until I got to the arena," he explained. “I had to rush back home, and the traffic was so crazy, I didn’t get back to the arena until about ten minutes before my match. That shit sucked ass, man.”
Nibbling on her bottom lip again, Delilah eyed Josh with awe as he spoke, his understanding words and softer eyes putting her more at ease than before. To think that the great Jey Uso had felt this jittery before his first match made her feel like they had a little more in common now.
"I really want this, ya know?" she said, relaxing some more as she confided in him. "I've always wanted this. I had a later start than most, I’ll admit, and I’m playing catch-up. That’s why I'm busting my ass so hard," she admitted. "There’s no room for error, Jey. I gotta be perfect."
Licking his lips subconsciously, Josh watched her take another sip of her water, some of it escaping her lips and trickling down the valley between her breasts, and felt a tightness deep in his gut. "Perfection don’t exist, baby girl, not in pro wrestling," he pointed out, his eyes reactively sweeping down the curves of her body before he spoke again. "Look, if Tank thinks you ready for this, then you ready," he said.
Delilah sighed heavily. She could only hope Tank was right. As she picked up her towel and bag off of the floor, she stopped short, and then turned to face him again. “Wait…Did you just call me baby girl?” she asked him.
A smirk twitched at the corner of his lips. “Sorry. Bad habit. I meant no disrespect. If I offended you, I'm sorry.” He stepped closer to her. “Forgive me?”
Delilah swallowed, taking a few steps of her own backwards. She noticed his lips twitch again in amusement. “Uh…yeah. Sure.”
Josh smiled. “Preciate that, Delilah.” He backed away. “I’ll see you tomorrow night. Think about what I said, a’ight?”
She watched him walk away from her and out of the gym, so many questions on the tip of her tongue. Her hand tightened over her water bottle, and she suddenly felt the need to take a cold shower, or two.

... As he continued making games, Wright would become inspired by the postwar architect Christopher Alexander, whose 1977 book A Pattern Language became a cult manual for city design. It divided metropolitan life into modular elements—“SMALL PUBLIC SQUARES,” “GREEN STREETS,” “SHOPPING STREET”—and then instructed readers on how they should be combined. In this approach an environment became an almost mathematical operation: “Each pattern describes a problem which occurs,” Alexander writes, “and then describes the core of the solution to that problem, in such a way that you can use this solution a million times over, without ever doing it the same way twice.”
Maxis was acquired by EA in 1997; three years later Wright released The Sims, the ur-game, a simulation of humanity itself. In the same way that Alexander proposed curating infinite variety under a standardizing aegis, so could the components of The Sims be shuffled and toggled into ever-proliferating realities. Wright had lost his home in the Oakland firestorm of 1991, and has said that the original purpose of The Sims was to simulate the building and designing of houses. Indeed, the game maintains a lasting obsession with real estate. To play a family one must buy a home, and a home in The Sims is like a zen garden: obsessively tended to, an object of constant maintenance and contemplation. One can spend hours surveying possible wallpaper choices or creating a painstakingly gabled roof. In a 2022 oral history published by Vice, the franchise’s first art director, Charles London, said that The Sims was meant to be “an architecture game.” Little characters were added to “score” the design choices, only to eventually become the main feature and appeal.
Some commentators believe that The Sims is meant to satirize suburbia. “The boredom, the sterility, the uselessness and the futility of contemporary life,” writes the media scholar Alexander Galloway, “are depicted precisely using the things that represent it best: a middle-class suburban house, an Ikea catalogue of personal possessions, crappy food and even less appetizing music, the same dozen mindless tasks over and over.” Others have argued that the game is more sincere, a naif’s tribute to property ownership and what one gaming website calls its “beautiful scenery and idyllic backdrops.” There are listicles, Reddit threads, and YouTube channels dedicated to ranking and showcasing Sims mansions, guided by the same voyeurism as the tours of real houses in Architectural Digest.
But Wright, who left EA in 2009, did not give these manicured pixels a matching suburban ethos. A home in The Sims lacks the usual animating forces of family life. Intimacy between relatives is measured in points, increasing or decreasing without any given injury or kindness settling into a memory. A Sims home is not a haven or stage for emotions; it is only a system that challenges players to maintain its various parts. The game’s characters therefore never seem to experience the ongoing dramas of domesticity—neither its tender feelings nor its threat of betrayal, violence, resentment, dependency, scandal, and mutual ruination. As London put it, Sims characters, in their levels of happiness, signify the “efficient choices” a user makes in “object placement and room design.” The game, in effect, exports the density and urgency of the city and its management to the suburbs. The toilet, the refrigerator, and the bed are the chief fixtures of the game, meant to be visited in efficient choreographies of clicking.
This is, ultimately, less a narrative project than an ecological one. The Sims is about holistic relations, the quick and at times perilous responsiveness of one part of the whole to another. A Sim’s mood will plummet if her house is poorly decorated, or if she hasn’t taken the garbage out, or if, in an effort to learn a skill, she’s forgotten to fulfill a need. This kind of hair-trigger existence may explain the impulse that so many players cite of wanting to set their Sims on fire or drown them in swimming pools. Contra popular belief, these users are not behaving like psychopaths so much as feeling an understandable reflex toward entropy. One desires to see the system lurch into breakdown, to dash the finely made dollhouse into pieces...
... One helps a Sim by employing an algorithm, which is often the same thing as internalizing it. Far from providing a nostalgic refuge from the contemporary Internet, in other words, The Sims taps into one of the Web’s most foundational assumptions: that the processes of thinking and producing can be reduced to a series of commands. The user, in this view, becomes more creative as she becomes more machine-like. The rules allow her to manufacture possibilities; she is less an author employing technology for her own ends than an emitter of inputs, a conscript of the machine’s algorithmic logic.
Nowhere is that logic more apparent than in generative AI. At its most basic an algorithm is a set of instructions for achieving a designated result, such as the prompt that one might use to generate email text, say, or an atrocity photo in the style of Hayao Miyazaki. In 2018 Will Wright announced his first project in years, a game called Proxi, which has still yet to appear. In it, players will use AI to build animated scenes based on their memories, which they can then tweak and modulate as they wish.

Reflecting from the Himalayas: Our Journey as Jurors for the Materia Award 2025
This year held an extra layer of meaning for our sister firm SMA and us. Sagarmatha Next— mountaineering waste upcycling center near Everest—was officially welcomed into the Materia Award family on 22 March 2025 in Paris. Selected by a distinguished jury of 15 professionals and scientists, the project was included in both the Materia exhibition and the accompanying publication, Stone: 40 Best Contemporary Sustainable Architecture Projects in the World. Architect Himanshu Lal, a key member of the design and execution team, was in Paris to receive this international recognition on behalf of SMA, making it a super proud and reflective moment for all of us rooted in the Himalayas.

To be counted among the top 40 projects in the global Materia Award 2025 is a humbling recognition. Rooted in the spirit of place and material—so deeply aligned with the Himalayan ethos—this honor came with a beautiful invitation from Prof. Anne: to pause, reflect, and engage deeply with the other 39 selected works from around the world.
Together, as Team SMA from Kathmandu and Team HAP from Bhimtal, we also stepped into the role of Himalayan jurors, grounding our perspectives in the mountains we call home. Over days of review and deliberation, we curated our personal Top 5 from the shortlisted entries—projects that spoke not only to innovation and sustainability but to cultural continuity, the dignity of materials, and human-scale craft.

Each of the 11 jury members brought a lens informed by their local terrain and traditions. On the morning of March 26th, we came together—across regions and time zones—to listen, debate, and learn from one another. The following day, we cast our votes.
The entries stretched across climates and cultures: from Housing Now’s affordable bamboo housing solution in Myanmar, to the restoration of a barrack built with earth and thatch in El Palmar, to a rest house entirely clad in scallop shells. What unified them all was a rootedness in local context and a commitment to ecological intelligence.
After careful reflection, our collective selection of five projects stood out:
Le Costil House, France A thoughtful extension of a traditional brick house, aiming for 0% concrete, 0% plastic, and 100% natural materials—wattle-and-daub, light earth, lime plaster, and hemp—demonstrating how heritage materials can guide future architecture.
Medical Surgical Center, Burkina Faso A powerful response to resource constraints, this center uplifts local materials—adobe, straw, and laterite—while celebrating the wisdom of vernacular craftsmanship.
La Bricole, France A poetic celebration of reuse, reinterpreting reclaimed wood and hemp into a space that feels both familiar and forward-looking.
Low-Cost Housing, Sahel, Mauritania A modular, scalable housing solution by Architecture et Développement au Sahel, using Nubian vault adobe techniques.
Casa Lasso, Ecuador A grounded yet ambitious project that draws from Cotopaxi’s vernacular traditions. Built with rammed earth and local labour, it’s as much about construction as it is about community learning and continuity.
The Materia Awards invited us into an exploration—a pilgrimage of sorts—through material cultures and sustainable imaginations. What we found reaffirmed something we’ve long known in the mountains: sustainability is not a constraint—it is a path of creativity, humility, and beauty.

The Ultimate 2024 Guide to Sleeper Sofas: Style, Comfort & Space-Saving Magic
Let’s face it: not all of us have the luxury of a dedicated guest room. Whether you're in a cozy apartment, hosting guests for the weekend, or simply looking to get more function out of your living room, a sleeper sofa is the multitasking miracle you didn’t know you needed. Think of it as the Swiss Army knife of furniture—part sofa bed, part bed, 100% space-saving genius.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about sleeper sofas—from types, comfort levels, and designs, to choosing the right one for your lifestyle. Let's dive in and get comfy!
🛋️ What Is a Sleeper Sofa?
Definition and Functionality
A sleeper sofa, also known as a sofa bed, is a couch with a hidden mattress inside. It transforms into a bed, offering a convenient sleeping space without taking up permanent room.
Sleeper Sofa vs Sofa Bed
Though often used interchangeably, some distinguish sleeper sofas as pull-out types with full mattresses, while sofa beds often refer to futons or click-clacks that fold flat.
🛠️ Types of Sleeper Sofas
1. Pull-Out Sofa Sleeper
The classic. You remove the cushions and pull out a metal frame with a foldable mattress. Great for guests.
2. Futon-Style Sleeper
Simple mechanism: fold the back down to create a flat surface. Ideal for smaller spaces and budget buyers.
3. Click-Clack Mechanism
A modern twist on the futon, it "clicks" into different positions—upright, reclined, and flat. Fast and easy setup.
4. Sectional Sleeper Sofa
Big, comfy, and often with extra features like storage. Great for families or larger living rooms.
5. Loveseat Sleeper
Perfect for small rooms or studio apartments. Converts into a twin-sized bed.
6. Chair Sleeper
Yes, even a single seat can turn into a bed! Ideal for kids or solo guests.
📏 How to Choose the Right Sleeper Sofa
1. Measure Your Space
Before you fall in love with a design, grab your tape measure. Consider both the size as a sofa and when fully extended.
2. Determine Frequency of Use
Will it be used nightly or just for the occasional guest? Frequent sleepers should opt for higher-quality mattresses.
3. Consider Who’s Sleeping
Kids? Elderly relatives? Couples? Choose size and firmness accordingly.
4. Match Your Interior Style
Don't sacrifice aesthetics for functionality. Find one that blends with your decor—modern, traditional, industrial, etc.
💤 Mattress Types for Sleeper Sofas
1. Innerspring
Traditional coils. Affordable but may not be super comfy.
2. Memory Foam
Contours to your body. Great for long-term sleep quality.
3. Gel-Infused Foam

4. Air-Over-Coil
Inflatable top with spring base—luxurious and supportive.
5. Latex
Eco-friendly, breathable, and durable. Higher cost, higher comfort.
🎨 Upholstery Options

Soft and available in many colors/patterns. Can stain easily—treat with care.
2. Leather

Luxurious texture and trendy. High-maintenance but visually stunning.
💡 Sleeper Sofa Features to Consider
1. Storage Compartments
Great for hiding extra linens or pillows.
2. USB Charging Ports
Because who doesn’t want to charge their phone in bed?
3. Reclining Features
Some sectional sleepers also recline—double duty furniture!
4. Modular Sections
Move pieces around for maximum versatility.

How to Choose the Best Home Office Furniture for Productivity
1. How to Choose the Best Home Office Furniture for Productivity
Designing a home office that enhances productivity starts with one key factor: choosing the right home office furniture. Whether you’re working remotely full-time or just need a quiet place for focused work, your furniture can significantly impact how efficiently and comfortably you work. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to choose the best home office furniture for productivity, comfort, and style.
2. Prioritize an Ergonomic Office Chair
One of the most important investments you can make is an ergonomic office chair. Spending long hours seated demands proper support to avoid back pain and fatigue.
When choosing an ergonomic chair, look for:
Adjustable height and armrests to align your body properly with the desk
Lumbar support to maintain the natural curve of your lower back
Breathable material to keep you cool during long work sessions
Swivel base and wheels for easy mobility without straining your body
Cushioned seat with adequate depth for comfort without pressure on the thighs
At Evgor Furniture, our ergonomic chair models blend these features with elegant designs suitable for modern home offices.
3. Choose the Right Desk for Your Workflow
Your home office desk should match your daily needs and tasks. A well-chosen desk improves posture, organization, and overall efficiency.
Consider the following when selecting a desk:
Surface area: Do you need space for a computer, notebook, and files?
Height compatibility: Make sure it matches your chair and supports ergonomic posture
Storage solutions: Look for drawers or shelves to store documents and office supplies
Material and finish: Choose a desk that complements your home décor
Cable management: Built-in channels or grommets help reduce cable clut
Evgor Furniture offers desks in a variety of sizes, materials, and colors to suit every style and space.
4. Optimize Storage with Smart Solutions
Clutter is the enemy of productivity. Incorporating the right storage furniture will keep your workspace tidy and mentally clear.
Smart storage ideas include:
Filing cabinets for organizing documents and reducing desk mess
Open shelving units to keep frequently used items within easy reach
Closed cabinets to conceal items you don’t want on display
Wall-mounted shelves to save floor space and add a decorative touch
Multi-functional furniture like desks or ottomans with hidden compartments
At Evgor Furniture, you’ll find modular storage systems that can be customized to your needs.
5. Maximize Natural Light and Add Task Lighting
Although not furniture per se, lighting plays a major role in your productivity. Position your desk near a window to benefit from natural light. For late hours, invest in a stylish and functional task lamp. Proper lighting reduces eye strain and keeps you alert and focused throughout the day.
6. Consider Aesthetics for Motivation
Your office should inspire you. Select furniture that reflects your taste while maintaining a professional feel. Whether you prefer modern minimalism, classic elegance, or a cozy homey vibe, Evgor Furniture offers stylish home office furniture to suit every aesthetic.
7. Invest in Multi-Functional Pieces
For smaller spaces, multi-purpose furniture is ideal. Consider desks with hidden storage or bookshelves that double as room dividers. These solutions not only save space but also contribute to an organized and efficient home office setup.
8. Create Zones for Focus and Relaxation
If space allows, set up distinct zones—one for work and one for short breaks. A small lounge chair or a corner table can serve as a spot to relax between meetings. Zoning helps your brain switch modes, improving overall focus and reducing fatigue.
Selecting the best home office furniture for productivity isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating a space that supports your workflow, health, and motivation. With Evgor Furniture’s wide range of ergonomic chairs, functional desks, and elegant storage solutions, you can create a home office that’s both practical and inspiring.

Another snippet because why not! This might be the first story I started writing in the empires/hermitcraft sphere, and it's what got me into shipping lmao. Flower husbands will always have a place in my heart.
Anyways, this is from an au where 3rd life Jimmy wakes up in Empires s1 after he dies. It's the opening scene :)
words: 1074 cw: none
-
There is a familiar heat beating down on him. Desert heat.
It presses down on his head, his back, his shoulders. It would be unbearable if he weren’t so used to it. The air he breathes is so dry it catches in his throat, and the wind whips sand against his skin, stinging, and buries it in his feathers.
He supposes it is only right that he wakes up here, in a desert. He died in one after all.
(Secretly, he wishes he was somewhere else, where the warmth was a comfort and not danger, where water lapped gently at its shore and flowers swayed in the whispering wind.)
Jimmy opens his eyes and golden sand stretches endlessly in front of him, lapping dunes like a great ocean. The world sways and shimmies in the heat. He can’t see anything on the horizon, no pride rock, no dilapidated bunker. Not even the distant forests that edged the Red Desert. None of the familiar landmarks he is used to. This desert is much, much larger than the one he left.
But there's something deep in his chest, tugging him forward, and he can do nothing else but follow.
He wonders, as he wanders his way north, if he can die in the afterlife. He knows from experience that spending too long in the desert without supplies is a death sentence, but, strangely, he doesn’t really care. He feels a bit distant to his body, like it isn’t quite right or that he’s not fully inside of it.
Well, this is death, Jimmy reminds himself. This body probably isn’t even real.
So he ignores his growing fatigue, the way his throat scratches with every swallow. He keeps walking.
The sun is getting low in the sky when something finally appears on the horizon: a great towering mountain of brown stone. It looks out of place in the endless gold of the desert, but Jimmy’s just glad to see something new. The world has melted into a blur of swaying colors, and he’s not sure if what he’s seeing is even real, but either way, he continues to stumble towards it, his feet dragging and breathing labored.
The mountain continues to grow, taller and taller, until it blocks out most of the horizon. Inexplicably, Jimmy knows that's where the feeling in his chest is guiding him. Maybe it will take him home.
There's a town settled at the base of it. He sees it as he crests the final dune. Tightly clustered, modular buildings made of smoothly carved sandstone. It’s colorful though, not just tan and beige like Scar and Grian’s base was. There are lanterns strung across roads, bright banners hanging from windows, and merchant carts painted with all the colors imaginable. He can hear, distantly, a growing chatter and a snatch of song.
His thirst is back, so sharp it cuts through the fog in his mind. It brings all of its fellow aches with it. His cheeks and shoulders are burning, and his legs and arms and wings are so heavy they drag on the ground. When he takes a step, he stumbles and goes tumbling down the hill.
It’s hard to keep track of what happens after that. He comes to a stop at some point, but the world is still spinning. He tries to stand back up, to keep walking, but his body feels like it's made of wet clay, so heavy he can’t lift it. His ears are ringing, but he can hear voices yelling and it makes his weary heart sing a song of danger.
When hands land on him, he lashes out, though he is too weak to do more than lightly smack at the hands. Whoever is holding him pays him no mind, and they swiftly lift him up. The sudden rocking movement makes him nauseous, and his eyes roll back as his mind swims.
Things are quiet after that.
He comes back to himself much later. There’s something cold laying on his forehead, a dribble of something sweet and cool slipping past his lips. It washes through him like a dip in cold water, and he sighs his pleasure. A soft voice is muttering something far away, but he doesn’t care to understand what they are trying to say. He is so tired.
But he can’t just lay here. In his mind, he sees green eyes, crinkled at the corner. He sees a dimple at the corner of pink lips, and he sees a poppy nestled in soft blue hair. A sharp, stinging longing erupts in his chest, and he needs to get up, to walk.
He has to go home.
His eyes slip open, and it feels like the hardest thing he’s ever done. They sting. His whole body stings, actually, like his skin has been replaced with a blanket of hurt. He struggles to push himself up, gritting his teeth through the pain, but his arms are too weak to hold him up. When he tries again, a firm hand on his shoulder pushes him back down to the bed.
“No,” he rasps, his voice barely more than a whisper.
“You need to lay still,” the voice tells him. He doesn’t recognize it. “You’re in bad shape. You need to rest.”
“No,” he says again, shaking his head. The world is still swimming, a blur of shapes and colors he can’t make sense of. His stomach rolls with nausea. “I have to… go home.”
The unfamiliar voice shushes him and presses something to his lips. He lets the cool water wash down his throat, soothing the dry, burning ache. “We’ll get you home, traveller,” the voice soothes, “but right now, you are in no condition to be moving.”
“I have to be there,” he insists, breath hitching. “He’ll be waiting for me.”
“It will be alright,” the voice assures.
Jimmy wants to protest, wants to push away the gentle hands and leave. He wants to be there when Scott dies, wants to welcome him home, wrap him in his arms and never let go. It’s the least he can do.
But sleep is dragging at his eyes, long fingers wrapped around his shoulders. It’s hard to resist, especially when the voice starts to hum a soft song, soft hands smoothing over the damp rag on his forehead, knocked out of place from his attempts to sit up.
He doesn’t win the fight. Sleep takes him.
#i miss empires s1 yall#s2 was great but it didn't have the same vibe as s1#i looooooooved the world and i liked making up unique cultures for each empire and this was gonna be my excuse to have someone get a tour#with a bit of angst because i simply cannot write anything with out a little bit of pain#wip excerpt#my writing#ribbit#flower husbands

How Much Does It Cost To Build A Custom Home?
Building a custom home is an exciting prospect, but it's also a significant investment. One of the first questions you'll likely ask yourself is "How much does it cost to build a custom home?"
The truth is, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The cost of building a custom home will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
The type of custom home you desire: A variety of custom home options to suit your needs and budget. These include:
Prefabricated homes: Prefabricated homes are a great option for those who want a high-quality, affordable custom home. They are built in sections in a controlled factory environment, which helps to ensure quality and reduce costs.
Modular homes: Modular homes are another affordable option for custom homes. They are similar to prefabricated homes, but they are built in larger sections that are then assembled on-site.
The size and location of your home: The size of your home is one of the biggest factors that will affect the cost. The larger the home, the more it will cost to build. The location of your home will also play a role in the cost. Homes built in areas with a high cost of living will typically be more expensive to build than homes built in more rural areas.
Quality of finishes and features: The quality of the finishes and features you choose for your home will also affect the cost. Standard finishes, such as laminate countertops and vinyl flooring, will be less expensive than luxury finishes, such as granite countertops and hardwood floors. Additional features, like a gourmet kitchen or home theater, will also add to the cost of your home.
Additional costs: Don't forget to factor in additional costs, such as permits, inspections, and landscaping, when budgeting for your custom home. These costs can add up quickly, so it's important to be aware of them from the start.
At King Homes NSW, We understand that bringing your dream home to life is a big decision. That's why we're here to guide you through every step of the home design process. We'll work closely with you to create a custom design that reflects your needs and budget, and our experienced home estimator will provide you with a transparent cost assessment for construction.
Here are some additional tips for keeping the cost of your custom home under control:
Set a budget and stick to it. Once you know how much you can afford to spend on your home, it's important to stick to that budget. This will help you make wise decisions about the size, finishes, and features of your home.
Shop around for contractors. Get quotes from several different contractors before you hire one. This will help you ensure that you're getting the best possible price for your project.
Be flexible with your design. The more flexible you are with your design, the easier it will be to stay on budget. Be open to making changes to your plans if necessary.
Building a custom home can be a rewarding experience. By following these tips, you can help ensure that your dream home becomes a reality.

The Comprehensive Guide to Prefab Houses and Their Benefits
Introduction: Embracing the Future of Housing
In recent years, the concept of prefabricated houses, or prefab houses, has garnered significant attention in the realm of modern architecture and construction. Prefab houses, also known as modular homes, are residences built off-site in a factory setting, then transported and assembled on-site. This innovative approach to home building offers numerous benefits, ranging from cost-effectiveness to sustainability, revolutionizing the way we think about housing. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the intricacies of prefab houses and explore their myriad advantages.
Understanding Prefab Houses
Prefab houses are not a new phenomenon, but rather a reimagining of traditional construction methods. Unlike conventional homes, which are built entirely on-site, prefab houses are constructed in controlled factory environments. This controlled setting ensures precision and efficiency, minimizing waste and maximizing quality. Prefab houses come in various designs and configurations, catering to diverse architectural preferences and spatial requirements.
The Benefits of Prefab Houses
1. Cost-Effectiveness
One of the most significant advantages of prefab houses is their cost-effectiveness. By streamlining the construction process and reducing labor and material expenses, prefab homes offer substantial savings compared to traditional building methods. Additionally, the controlled environment of the factory minimizes the risk of delays and cost overruns, allowing for more accurate budget projections.
2. Speed of Construction
Prefab houses are renowned for their swift construction timelines. Since the components are manufactured off-site concurrently with site preparation, the assembly process is significantly expedited. This rapid construction pace enables homeowners to move into their new residences in a fraction of the time required for conventional builds, making prefab houses an appealing option for those seeking quick occupancy.
3. Customization Options
Contrary to popular misconceptions, prefab houses offer extensive customization options, allowing homeowners to personalize their living spaces according to their preferences and needs. From floor plans to finishes, virtually every aspect of a prefab home can be tailored to reflect the homeowner's unique style and requirements. This flexibility ensures that prefab houses are not only efficient but also aesthetically pleasing and functional.
4. Sustainability
In an era marked by growing environmental consciousness, prefab houses shine as a sustainable housing solution. The controlled manufacturing process results in minimal material waste, while the ability to incorporate eco-friendly materials and technologies further enhances their environmental credentials. Additionally, the energy efficiency of prefab homes can be optimized through the integration of insulation, solar panels, and other green building practices, reducing carbon footprint and utility costs.
5. Durability and Quality
Prefab houses are engineered to meet rigorous quality standards, surpassing many traditional homes in durability and structural integrity. The use of advanced construction techniques and materials ensures that prefab houses withstand the test of time, offering long-term reliability and peace of mind to homeowners. Furthermore, factory-based production allows for stringent quality control measures, minimizing defects and ensuring consistent excellence in every aspect of the build.
Conclusion: Embracing the Future of Homebuilding
In conclusion, prefab houses represent a paradigm shift in the realm of homebuilding, offering unparalleled efficiency, affordability, and sustainability. With their myriad benefits and versatile design options, prefab houses have emerged as a compelling choice for homeowners seeking a modern, eco-friendly alternative to traditional construction methods. As the demand for innovative housing solutions continues to rise, prefab houses stand poised to shape the future of residential architecture, ushering in a new era of sustainable living.
