(this term was inspired by kenochoric and is meant to function similarly, but is related to ways in which I personally experience gender)
MONACHORIC: an umbrella term/label based on the emotion ‘monachopsis’, which is the ‘subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place’. it is something that affects one’s gender identity overall, and while it isn’t inherently a gender itself it can be used as such. there are multiple qualities of monachoric and a monachine individual may identify with all, one or some
- a disconnect and apathy towards humanity, not feeling like one fits in with other people (this may, but does not have to be, due to autism or a personality disorder)
- dogs, dog metaphors or relating to canine behaviour
- teenage behaviour, being awkward, being a loser, misfit or an outcast
- angry, messy and indignant emotions
- concepts of making dumb mistakes, bruises on knees and knuckles, old videogames, CDs and DVDs, being a burnout, making found footage films, rebellion, posters and baggy clothes
NOTABLE TERMS
monachine/MOIN: masculine/feminine equivalent / monachoric in nature
MOINgender: any gender under monachoric
monachism: masculinity/femininity equivalent

MONACHORIC — contrast-adjusted. This term was originally coined by rabidbatboy. I simply made the colors higher contrast, as the original was hard on my eyes due to the low contrast; I've included two different contrast levels, one being much higher, and the other more-so in-between.

Day 4 of @radiomogai's event. :3
4. How do you express your identity through your behaviour or clothing? How does this relate to your identity? If you don't currently, would you like to in the future?
Primarily we tend to express our identity through colors (Koff koff, beverage presentation system). Then there's pins when we feel like having them on our person and or bag(s) (which, honestly isn't that often due to anxiety of the pins giving up and breaking.)
We tend to showcase our genderqueerness & cisneutrality through dressing up more neutrally, our hair plays a part in that as well; we've had a buzz cut, overgrown buzz cut hairstyles for a few nice years and we've always been clocked as a boy thanks to the buzzcut but only if we don't speak. Currently the top of our head, fringe, and sides are longer than the back which was buzzed and is now growing so it looks a little funky, we are more often clocked as a woman now. Which, tbh we don't mind /as/ much, because people do still tend to see as a man if they see the back of our head first lol. Our current hair-do feels neutral to us since it was inspired by an longer existing hairstyle and a person on TikTok who presents as queer and our brain clocked them as queer futch-like masc, so that's why we have it as is. :)
Our transmasculine identity comes through that (clothes, former hair-do) as well, due to people not understanding what neutrality is and thinking the clothes on us makes us look masculine instead (which we don't mind much, but like it would be nice to be clocked as in-between genders and/or being completely neutral and not masculine or feminine lol.). We tend to be seen more androgynous than anything though, which is cool.
Our behavior is between masc and feminine, more feminine due to us not knowing how we're supposed to act. Socially masculine. Something we need to do more is study social masculine behavior to change that, but we're also chronically surrounded by jackass teenage & young men due to school who's behavior we do not want to study at all lmao. We're not that desperate for behavior study based on them.
Our looks and clothing is to represent our identity, primary identity umbrella (genderqueer & cisneutral. If we feel funky and have the energy, we also might present in a more monachine and/or lurine in nature. We might dapple in makeup sometimes, but it's often forlornly abandoned due to it making us look more feminine. /Neu)
I'd love to do more clothing and looks-vice to make us seem more queer masculine or neutral. We already do think people irl clock us as somewhat queer, which we love, but it's not queer enough to our liking lol.

A heads up that monachoric/monachine isn’t a species term it refers to a neogender umbrella (this)
OHH see I was really struggling to comprehend it, so I saw some mention of disconnect from humanity and assumed that was it. thanks for the clarification!

What is Monachoric?
Original coining post
Archived coining post
Monachoric is a neogender umbrella based around the word ‘monachopsis’ meaning ‘the subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place’.
Identifying as monachoric is a deeply personal experience, which may or may not be characterised by all, most or a few of these qualities:
- a disconnect and apathy towards humanity, not feeling like one fits in with other people (this may, but does not have to be, due to autism or a personality disorder)
- dogs, dog metaphors or relating to canine behaviour
- teenage behaviour, being awkward, being a loser, misfit or an outcast
- angry, messy and indignant emotions
- concepts of making dumb mistakes, bruises on knees and knuckles, old videogames, CDs and DVDs, being a burnout, making found footage films, rebellion, posters and baggy clothes
Do I count as monachoric?
To give the abridged version, if you feel any kind of identification or comfort with any aspect of this label, it is yours to use however you like. You do not have to identity with every associated quality. Monachopsis is the main quality of being monachoric, but you can identify with every quality but that one also if that’s what suits you.
At the point of coining monachoric, I was thinking specifically of my own gender experience. It was coined for me, and my life, more or less. I think that apathy, and an out-of-placeness, are qualities that can persist and present in a number of different ways pertaining to gender. There’s no right way to be ‘out of place’ as the name suggests. (More on that/my own experience here.)
What is a neogender umbrella?
A neogender umbrella is a “new gender” term which may encompass an infinite variety of other terms which fall into its criteria, potentially under a specific theme. In the case of monachoric, it in itself is not a xenogender like buggender or catgender etc, but might encompass a number of xenogenders and other terms that one identifies with. It also can be used alongside or as a substitute for terms like ‘man’ or ‘woman’, rather using monachoric-aligned terminology like ‘loser’ and ‘monachine’. Here is a post from the coiner of kenochoric describing why they use neogender as opposed to xenogender for kenochoric
How is monachoric used?
As mentioned above, monachoric can be used as opposed to or additionally to identities such as ‘being a man’ or ‘being non-binary’. Some might find that their experience of ‘being a woman’ (for example) is influenced by being monachoric. One may identify with xenogenders that fall under the monachoric umbrella. One might be transitioning to a state of monachism. There isn’t a wrong way to be monachoric in the same way that there isn’t a wrong way to be a boy, kenochoric, non-binary, xenine, etc.
Monachoric and neurodiversity
As the coiner and an individual with autism and personality disorders, my experience with society, humanity and community is often an isolated one. My intention with monachoric was to present a potentially relatable experience for individuals who struggle to fit in most umbrella identities due to the very different way we view the world. Monachoric is not exclusive to any particular groups or neurodivergency, however.

Scientists thought these seals evolved in the north. 3-million-year-old fossils from New Zealand suggest otherwise
A fossil discovery in New Zealand has revealed a brand new species of monk seal that after referred to as Australasia house. We introduce the three million-year-old seal, Eomonachus belegaerensis, in a paper printed in the present day within the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
Eomonachus is the primary monk seal species, dwelling or extinct, ever discovered within the southern hemisphere — and the oldest discovered wherever.
It’s rewriting all the pieces consultants thought they knew in regards to the evolution of “monachines”, a gaggle of seal relations comprising the 2 dwelling species of monk seal, the elephant seals, in addition to sure species of Antarctic seals.
Tumblr media
We estimate Eomonachus belegaerensis was about 2.5 meters lengthy. Jaime Bran/Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Creator supplied (No reuse)
On the point of vanishing
Monk seals are among the world’s rarest and most endangered marine mammals. There are fewer than 2,100 Mediterranean and Hawaiian monk seals alive in the present day. The Caribbean monk seal was hunted to extinction by the Nineteen Fifties.
Conservationists are actually scrambling to avoid wasting what’s left of Earth’s final solely tropical seals from disappearing.
Tumblr media
A Hawaiian monk seal emerges from the surf. That is an endangered species of earless seal (Phocidae household) that’s endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Robert Harcourt (Macquarie College)
That mentioned, we might be fallacious to imagine monk seals have been doing simply tremendous earlier than people started exploiting them. How they fared over the previous few million years stays unclear. We additionally don’t know the place they originated, as fossils are few and much between.
Scientists historically thought all monk seals developed within the North Atlantic Ocean. Earlier than the invention of Eomonachus, monk seals had solely been discovered within the Northern Hemisphere.
Actually, most monachine fossils are discovered within the north, despite the fact that a number of dwelling monachines (Antarctic seals and elephant seals) reside almost exclusively within the Southern Ocean.
The surprising discovery of Eomonachus has fully flipped the evolutionary historical past not solely of monk seals, however of all monachines — by inserting all three within the Southern Hemisphere for the primary time.
Learn extra: Marine species are more threatened than we thought – and we’ve only looked at 3%
A monk seal from New Zealand
The restoration of the primary identified Eomonachus fossils got here within the type of seven skulls uncovered alongside the coast of Taranaki, on New Zealand’s North Island. The fossils have been retrieved by native collectors and donated to the Te Papa Tongarewa and Canterbury museums.
Tumblr media
The seven fossilised skulls of the extinct monk seal species Eomonachus. Erich Fitzgerald (Museums Victoria)
Our group finally named the species Eomonachus belegaerensis. This interprets to “daybreak monk seal from Belegaer”. Belegaer is the fictional sea that lies west of “Center Earth”, the land from J. R. R. Tolkein’s Lord of The Rings trilogy which is commonly related to New Zealand.
However what have been monk seals doing in New Zealand three million years in the past?
Nicely, up to now, southern oceans have been lots hotter than they’re in the present day. And historic monk seals, very similar to their fashionable relations, lived in subtropical waters.
However till this year, few scientific research on extinct monachines had been performed within the southern hemisphere. That is doubtless why Eomonachus eluded scientists for therefore lengthy.
Learn extra: In a land of ancient giants, these small oddball seals once called Australia home
The evolution of monachines
Following the disclosing of Eomonachus, we determined to re-investigate the evolution of the monachines.
Our analysis signifies this group of seals developed within the Southern Hemisphere in any case. That is in distinction with each idea beforehand put ahead by scientists.
Tumblr media
Monash College palaeontologist James Rule with one of many Eomonachus cranium fossils present in New Zealand. Erich Fitzgerald/Museums Victoria
If there’s certainly a southern origin for monachines, this could imply the group crossed the equator a minimum of eight instances all through its evolutionary historical past.
Nonetheless, the nice and cozy waters on the equator are broadly accepted to be a thermal barrier which is troublesome for marine mammals to cross.
If previous monachines did soar between each hemispheres, they might have had broad environmental tolerances that allow them do that. And this could have enabled their dispersal all over the world.
It’s troublesome to say conclusively whether or not fashionable seals share this trait, however we do comprehend it’s uncommon for them to cross the equator throughout their lifetime.
Local weather change and seal extinction
So why aren’t monk seals dwelling round New Zealand now?
About 2.5 million years in the past, marine megafauna skilled an extinction event, thought to have been brought on by a drop in sea ranges because of falling international temperature.
Earlier analysis has theorised this alteration in local weather spurred the extinction of many ancient seals within the Southern Hemisphere. This might have included Eomonachus, in addition to different extinct monachines.
This implies the world’s final two species of monk seal, vestiges of what was as soon as doubtless a widespread group, are additionally in danger from local weather change.
If sea ranges proceed to rise, the seashores monk seals rely on for resting and breeding might disappear. Rising temperatures might additionally disrupt food webs, making it troublesome for them to seek out meals.
Whereas the invention of Eomonachus is thrilling, it may also be thought of a cautionary story.
