It got so embarrassing that the Congress had to hurriedly issue clarifications. “The name of Rahul Gandhi has been mischievously dragged to justify the pack of lies and deliberate misinformation being spread by Pakistan,” it said. “Let no one in the world be in doubt that Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh were, are and shall always remain an integral part of India.”

If that is so, then why did Rahul stand at Jawaharlal Nehru University in solidarity with organisers of an event which mourned terrorist Azfal Guru, a Kashmiri separatist who plotted the attack on India’s Parliament?

Why did he mock Indian ground troops’ and air force’s strikes across the border?

Why did he congratulate three journalists who got the Pulitzer prize for their work on ‘Indian occupation of Kashmir’?

There is a clear pattern of Rahul undermining India’s sovereignty.

Why would Rahul do that?

A political system doesn’t choose as its leader someone who demonstrably undermines it. A nation won’t choose a renegade as prime minister. Rahul and Sonia Gandhi know that.

So, why is he self-destructing?

First, it could be to reclaim the Muslim vote, fanning the community’s fear and mistrust of the Modi government. Is it effective?

No. No party today can win elections by alienating the Hindu vote, relying only on Nehruvian seculars and Muslims. Even Muslims don’t vote in mass, and back regional parties which have a better chance than the Congress in the states.

Second, he is hopelessly stuck in his comfort zone of far-Left politics – like a confused rich kid finding his ‘cool’ in elitist woke activism, his anger against Modi and RSS finding an anchor in the dissent politics of Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders (both just got roundly whipped by voters).

Third and the most ominous explanation for this political kamikaze could be that Rahul has given up. Maybe he has abandoned all hope of coming back to power. The brash utterings at broadcasts, childish swipes on social media, radical NGO activism, taking online tutorials from experts (a fumbling spectacle with zero mass connect), and a petulant teenager-like relationship with the nation… all point to dismay.

As Men Are Canceled, So Too Their Magazine Subscriptions

Imagine if Kodak had answered the threat of digital photography by pivoting from film to outdoor grills.

Imagine if Blockbuster had taken on the challenge from Netflix by shifting from DVDs to fast food.

Imagine if men’s magazines stared down the post-#MeToo manpocalypse by disowning men.

Maybe the last one isn’t so hypothetical?

At a time when calls are growing for the Oscars, Tonys and Emmys to follow the Grammys and the MTV Video Music Awards in erasing gendered categories, and to do away with gender-specific magazines, bro bibles like GQ, Esquire and Playboy seem poised to do a backpedal of Michael Jackson moonwalk proportions from the formula that kept them perched at the publishing pinnacle for a half-century.

Namely, being a print version of your father, offering up bourbon-breathed tutorials on the arts of tie knotting, fly casting, and skirt chasing.

In the gender tornado of 2019, men’s magazines, it seems, are canceling themselves. (The internet’s assault on glossy print isn’t helping either.)

“How do you make a so-called men’s magazine in the thick of what has justifiably become the Shut Up and Listen moment?” wrote Will Welch, the editor of GQ, in a cri de coeur introduction to this month’s “New Masculinity” issue. “One way we’ve addressed it,” he continued, “is by making a magazine that isn’t really trying to be exclusively for or about men at all.

So gender fluid it’s soggy, the 128-page issue might well have been themed “No Masculinity,” with its androgynous cover image of Pharrell Williams looking like an inverted tulip in a floor-length yellow Moncler Pierpaolo Piccioli coat, followed by ruminations on the “weaponized” male body by Thomas Page McBee, a transgender writer and boxer; a defense of makeup for men by EJ Johnson, Magic Johnson’s son whose fashion tastes run toward fur shawls and diamond chokers; and a debunking of the power of testosterone itself by Katrina Karkazis, a cultural anthropologist and author.

Such untraditional content is a survival strategy for glossies with a Y chromosome tilt in this homo novus era, where every reference to masculinity wears an implied “toxic” like a hair shirt.

Even Playboy, mired in identity crisis since dial-up modems, is suddenly woke.

The magazine has rechristened its Bunnies as “brand ambassadors,” and even embarked on a short-lived experiment to cut out the nudes. After the death of its founder Hugh Hefner in 2017, Playboy has morphed into an art-book quarterly that ditched its old tee-hee-hee motto, “Entertainment for Men,” for a gender-blinkered “Entertainment for All.”

It’s an open question whether the men who now turn to Pornhub and its ilk for the kind of “entertainment” that Playboy built an empire on even noticed.

Even so, the magazine, which long held up Hef, with his phallic-symbol pipe and star-studded skin romps at the Playboy Mansion, as the epitome of American straight male aspiration, is turning the brand’s hyper-male, hyper-hetero legacy on its head.

The magazine’s new leadership team consists of a gay man (the executive editor Shane Singh) and two women (the creative director Erica Loewy and Anna Wilson, who is in charge of photography and multimedia), all millennials.

Recent feature articles include profiles of Andrea Drummer, a female African-American chef who runs a cannabis-centric restaurant in Los Angeles, and King Princess, a genderqueer pop singer who is as a symbol of self-acceptance to young L.G.B.T.Q. fans.

For a cover image this summer, the team commissioned the fine-art photographer Ed Freeman (a rare man who still shoots for Playboy, though he is gay) for an arty underwater shot featuring three featuring female activists for causes like ocean conservation and H.I.V. awareness.

“The water,” Mr. Singh explained to Jessica Bennett of The New York Times for an article in August, “is meant to represent gender and sexual fluidity.”

Change is also afoot at Esquire, the tweediest of the men’s titles, which for decades carried a whiff of dad’s old cedar chest full of pocketknives and Mickey Mantle baseball cards.

This past June, the magazine installed its second editor, Michael Sebastian, in three years. Mr. Sebastian, 39, made his name as Esquire’s digital director, where he oversaw a significant rise in traffic to the site, according to Hearst.

His appointment as editor prompted industry speculation that he was going to go “full Cosmo,” chasing Instagram-friendly content and trending topics on Twitter just like Cosmopolitan, Esquire’s sister publication at Hearst that has lately been pursuing data as hotly as it long proselytized multiple orgasms.

The move seemed symbolic. Mr. Sebastian replaced Jay Fielden, a dapper Texan given to Hemingway and Cifonelli suits, who had departed weeks before, citing the lure of new (and unspecified) possibilities. Mr. Fielden had vowed to revive the “literary charisma” of the magazine of Fitzgerald and Dos Passos. He may have fit the image of the “Esquire man” too well for the times.

In one of his first interviews after he got the job, Mr. Sebastian took a swipe at the publishing patriarchy, telling The Wall Street Journal that he wanted to get away from the idea “that both the Esquire reader and writer is a middle-age white guy who likes brown liquor and brown leather.”

In fairness to Mr. Fielden, he said pretty much the same thing years ago, before Harvey Weinstein and his ilk sent half the population to the penalty box. “There’s no cigar smoke wafting through the pages,” he said to The New York Times in 2017, “and the obligatory three B’s are gone, too — brown liquor, boxing and bullfighting.”

As the same article reported, Mr. Fielden had won the job in part because he courted more male readers to the traditionally feminine Town & Country, the Hearst title he headed before Esquire.

At Esquire, he vowed to lure more female readers and ditched boys’ club staples like the print version of the “Women We Love” issue.

Apparently, it was not enough. Could anything be? Perhaps not, as manhood itself is being interrogated, scrutinized and radically revised.

The very idea of a men’s magazine now sounds “as hopelessly passé as a private gentlemen’s club,” according to a recent article, “The End of Men’s Magazines,” in City Journal, which is not exactly a progressive organ (the magazine is published by the Manhattan Institute, a free-market think tank).

Maybe. Or maybe not.

Details is done. Maxim has evolved its identity from a frat-house must-read to a cosmopolitan lifestyle magazine, an about-face that began under a female editor and fashion veteran, Kate Lanphear, who departed in 2015.

But Esquire has already survived the Great Depression, World War II, disco, yuppies and the dot-com bust. It’s still here.

And plenty of readers are still here, too, even in a brutal publishing climate that has forced august women’s titles like Glamour, Seventeen, Self, and Redbook to retreat from print for the web.

Despite a plunge in newsstand sales that has plagued the whole industry, Esquire still had an estimated total average circulation of 709,000 for the first six months of this year, according to the Alliance for Audited Media; the figure accounts for both print and digital subscriptions as well as single-copy sales.

GQ, too, is a long, long way from life support, with a figure of 934,000 for the same period, according to the alliance.

Times change, sometimes violently. But recent history is full of apparent anachronisms (gas guzzlers, Birkenstocks, Donald Trump) that managed an unlikely second act. And men’s magazines have proven pretty adept at sniffing out the shifts in culture, both trivial and seismic, over the decades — which is one reason they have been around for decades.

Esquire may have swaggered into the 1960s as the Don Draper of magazines, but as the old order began to crumble thanks to Betty Friedan, the Black Panthers and many others, the magazine’s editor, Harold Hayes, quickly detoured into a flower-power-era version of woke.

He commissioned Susan Sontag’s dispatch from Hanoi at the height of the Vietnam War, and James Baldwin’s ruminations on race in America after the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Even Playboy opened its pages to thought-provoking interviews with Eldridge Cleaver, Malcolm X and Fidel Castro while sprinkling in at least a few pictorials featuring Playmates of color.

Yes, that was a different time. We’ve come a long way from Gloria Steinem decrying “The Moral Disarmament of Betty Coed” thanks to the Pill in Esquire in 1962, to Hannah Gadsby, a lesbian comedian, taking aim at “hypermasculine man-babies” in GQ’s “New Masculinity” issue.

Making The Most Out Of Modest Character Profiles

Part Two: Rory Lawe

Basic Stats:

Name: Aurora Eloise “Rory” Lawe

Sex: AFAB

Gender: Cis female, not a huge girly girl, and certainly not the type to follow feminine gender roles, but likes feminine things in life.

Age: 26

Race/Ethnicity: White/Indian, Indian-American

Height: 5’9”

Body Type: Thin. She works out regularly, so she’s toned, but she’s not super muscular.

Appearance: She has long, straight, sleek black hair that falls to her shoulders. Rory devotes a lot of time to make it look good, but if she lets her hair routine falls to the wayside her hair gets frizzy and puffy. Eyes are large and brown. Her skin is a pale tan; she tans more when she goes out, but she rarely gets any opportunity. Both of her ears are pierced, and it’s rare to see her without some earrings. She has some freckles along her nose and the top of her cheeks. Her face is more on the angular side, but softened. She’s a fairly hairy gal, and shaves regularly to avoid that getting out of control.

Where Is She From? Modest, Georgia. She lived in a middle class part of town, in a large family of adopted kids along with her brother. Her adoptive parents, and most of the surrounding people, are conservative Christians. While they rarely struggled financially for basic needs, if Rory wanted anything beyond the basics, she had to work for it.

Relationships:

Family: Rory and her twin brother Bastian are very close. They spend most of their time together, and as much as they drive each other nuts, they love each other deeply. Their birth mother, Sophie, died when they were four. They were raised by family friends, Adeline and Sam Lawe, who adopted them and multiple other kids. Adeline is a very conservative woman, very Christian, but also fairly accepting. She deeply loves and cares for the kids. Sam, however, was stern and much more stubborn in his beliefs. He does not approve of Rory and Bastian’s sexualities, and was very angry when Rory broke up with Roman Cavanagh and started dating Henry. Their relationship was worsened when Sam drunkenly ranted about Henry during Rory and Bastian’s college graduation party, which Henry was attending. Sam and Bastian got into a physical fight, ending the party and resulting in Rory and Bastian getting kicked out. Rory and Bastian’s adoptive siblings, Caleb, Rosie, Josephine, and Charlotte, were all older than Rory and Bastian, but they were very protective of the two. Caleb and Rosie helped the two with school, and Josephine and Charlotte were there for the two when they were figuring out their sexualities in high school. The older siblings have all had conflicts with Adeline and especially with Sam, leading to them leaving town. They do visit Modest occasionally, primarily to see Rory and Bastian. Rory’s relationship with her biological father, Sai Singh, is a bit fraught as well. He was absent for most of her life, since she was an infant. However, in the past two years, he reconnected with his kids after a terminal cancer prognosis. He is a very wealthy film and stage director who worked his way up from the bottom. Sai intended to bring Sophie, Bastian, and Rory with him to New York when he first got work in the theatre business, but Sophie refused, and she and Sai divorced. Because he couldn’t stay for the proceedings without losing his job, he let her have the kids, a decision he deeply regrets. He realized they were still in Modest after seeing them in a front page news article for the local newspaper, and his wife, Anika contacted them while he was in the hospital. Since then, they have formed a good relationship with both their father and their stepmother, who are both warm people who quickly accepted Rory and Bastian into their lives.

Friends: Aside from her brother and boyfriend, Rory’s best friends are Vicky Parks and Defiance Lautari. They were childhood friends, and while they have very different personalities and beliefs, they’re very close. Defiance, in accordance with her name, has always stuck up for the two, and Vicky is a comforting and calming presence. While Rory may or may not have had crushes on both of them (and may or may not still have a crush on them now) they are very affectionate with each other, and the phrase “I love you” is often uttered when they’re together.

What Is She Attracted To? She likes aesthetically pleasing people. Not necessarily hot or fitting society’s standards of beauty, but someone who looks interesting to her. She really likes someone she can be open with, someone she has fun with, and someone whom she can help and who can help her.

Sexual Experience: Rory didn’t have sexual experience until junior year of college with Henry. Her previous boyfriend, Roman, was very conservative, and her other boyfriends never really lasted long enough to go that far. Aside from some flirting and kissing with other short-term partners, she hasn’t gone that far with anyone else.

Romantic Experience: Rory began dating in high school (much to the chagrin of her adoptive father). Her first few dates never lasted longer than a month. However, in sophomore year, she began dating Roman Cavanagh, a freshman and the son of a local banking family. They were set up by Roman’s brother Edward, who was dating Vicky, Rory’s best friend. The couple lasted until senior year, when things began moving very quickly and Roman began pressuring Rory to get married after high school. Coupled with Mrs. Cavanagh’s treatment of her (bringing her to a church meeting nicknamed “The Housewives Club”, composed of women talking about being good Christian wives; isolating her from her friends; putting her down for having ambitions of owning her own clothing store), Rory realized things weren’t gonna work. She dumped him before winter break (again, much to the chagrin of her adoptive father), and shortly thereafter began dating Henry. She and Henry have been dating since then, and while they’ve opened their relationship since college, neither have had many partners for longer than a few weeks.

Skills:

Skills: Rory loves anything involving clothing. She can design and sew clothes, do alterations and fittings, as well as style outfits and model them. She’s also great at running social media, running popular personal Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr accounts (@roryelawe, @roryelawefashion, and @areoharewhy), as well as the accounts for the Youtube channel. She also makes tutorial videos for the channel, as well as videos about interesting research she discovers about things she hyper-focuses on (typically fashion, queer history, and her favorite films). Rory tends to bounce between other hobbies, much like Henry. Typically they’re related to art, such as sketching, painting, and crafting. She is smart, though her skills are more focused on the humanities than science or math.

Education: Rory attended a small private school in her town. While she’s smart, she struggled with focusing and studying due to untreated ADHD. Her adoptive parents didn’t get her treatment, and when she attended college she continued to struggle. Rory eventually sought treatment herself, and got much better grades. She double-majored in Fashion Design and Business, and while she didn’t graduate with honors she was still proud of her success.

Occupation: Rory has had part-time summer jobs at restaurants and retail stores in high school and college. She currently works full-time at a local tailor, helping with alterations and fittings. She also sells clothing online and has done some modelling work for small businesses.

Hobbies: Rory is almost always working on something related to clothing. If she’s not designing it, she’s repairing, refitting, or redesigning it. She also likes styling clothes (she rarely leaves the house without a meticulously chosen outfit) and doing makeup, both on herself and other people. She loves researching things; Rory has spent many a night diving into Google and learning about the history of high heels or a queer icon. She often picks up hobbies from Henry, as well. And, of course, she manages the YouTube channel.

Personality & Character:

Introvert or Extrovert? Ambivert. She enjoys going out and spending time with friends, but she also needs time to herself every so often. Rory’s true happy place is doing something quiet with a loved one or two.

Strengths: Rory is passionate about whatever she’s doing. She is a huge confidence booster to everyone around her. She’s the type of person who can turn a quiet room into a party and a fight into a reunion. Loves making people feel better about themselves. Hard worker. Fun and bubbly. She’s a good team player and can work well with a lot of different personalities. She’s always on top of trends and new things. Rory is quick to get people smiling and can bring out the best in others.

Weaknesses: Rory sometimes gets so involved in something she’s passionate about she forgets other things. She’s a bit of a busybody, and meddles when she really shouldn’t sometimes. She is hella forgetful. Not the best at taking care of her own problems. Bottles up her feelings. Works beyond her limits a lot. Isn’t open about how she feels. Self sacrificial. Big time worrier.

Goals: She wants to open a clothing store with her own pieces. She wants the vlog to succeed as well. She’d love to marry Henry, but worries about money and space. While she’d like to have kids, she’s not sure about having any at the moment, especially since she’s not terribly used to them. She also wants to develop a relationship with her father, stepmother, and those around them, though she worries they won’t like or accept her and her friends.

Beliefs: Rory is agnostic, like Henry. While she was raised Christian, she disagrees with a lot of their beliefs. She doesn’t like organized religion, nor does she like the idea of having to worship someone or something. She believes in the possibility of a higher power, but she doesn’t really care what or who it is. She is very liberal, feminist as hell, and believes in socialism. She believes society should be accepting, and that civilization requires teamwork to succeed. She distrusts what authorities tell her, and often goes against societal expectations.

Fears: Rory is terrified of being hurt. Older people, especially those in parental or teacher type relationships, make her anxious due to her bad experiences with them. She worries about not succeeding or being a failure. She sometimes deeply fears the people around her, since she’s heard a lot of hateful rhetoric and has seen a lot of her closest friends get hurt because of who they were. She worries about breaking down because of how hard she pushes herself, and then being a burden rather than an aide to her friends.

Insecurities: Rory doesn’t like having ADHD and anxiety, since it tends to be more than a harm than a help. She has insecurities about her body, especially since she spends a lot of time looking at herself in the mirror. She is a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to her work, and when things don’t go the way she expected, she’s quick to get angry. Whenever she needs help, she feels like she’s bothering or hurting others.

This man has been radicalised. That is what we would say if somebody got on stage in solidarity with those who grieve incarceration of a terrorist who plotted the attack on a nation’s Parliament, those who raised slogans of breaking his own country into pieces. That is what we would say if that man questioned and mocked surgical strikes by his nation’s army on the enemy. Or echoed the enemy when his own army conducted airstrikes to avenge the killing of soldiers. That is what we would say if that man tried to shame the nation abroad at seminars and talks, or made friends in West Asia with a bigot who repeatedly attacks India on religious lines. Or congratulates journalists for winning a prize by undermining one’s own nation’s sovereignty. This man has been radicalised, we would say. What would we say about Rahul Gandhi? One isn’t sure. But his latest gesture of congratulating Pulitzer-winning journalists who don’t acknowledge the sovereignty of India in Kashmir has to be a first for an Indian politician who ever fancied heading the nation. Even Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, the big daddy of Muslim votebank politics, was most hawkish in his 1996 to 1998 tenure as defence minister, never ceding an inch on Kashmir or the nation’s sovereignty. The descent into subversiveness Rahul, however, seems to have descended into a spiral of far Left, subversive standpoint since Narendra Modi swept to power at the Centre and the Congress started losing state after state. It perhaps started with a conscious decision to position oneself as the counterpoint to Modi’s nationalism. But the line between opposing what the Congress calls “hypernationalism” and opposing the nation swiftly started getting blurred. Rahul walked into a trap. While pillorying Modi, he started attacking the core ideas that safeguard the construct of a nation: identity, security, sovereignty. Whether it is the military strikes against Pakistan or confrontation with China at Doka La or the COVID-19 pandemic, it is difficult to recall when Rahul has shown the political maturity of standing with the government during national crises and emergency. Instead, Pakistan quoted him in its petition to the United Nations after India withdrew special status from Jammu and Kashmir. “These and other acts of violence have even been acknowledged by mainstream politicians such as the leader of Congress party, Mr Rahul Gandhi, who has noted ‘people dying’ in Jammu and Kashmir, in light of events ‘going very wrong there’,” the Pakistani petition said. It got so embarrassing that the Congress had to hurriedly issue clarifications. “The name of Rahul Gandhi has been mischievously dragged to justify the pack of lies and deliberate misinformation being spread by Pakistan,” it said. “Let no one in the world be in doubt that Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh were, are and shall always remain an integral part of India.” If that is so, then why did Rahul stand at Jawaharlal Nehru University in solidarity with organisers of an event which mourned terrorist Azfal Guru, a Kashmiri separatist who plotted the attack on India’s Parliament? Why did he mock Indian ground troops’ and air force’s strikes across the border? Why did he congratulate three journalists who got the Pulitzer prize for their work on ‘Indian occupation of Kashmir’? There is a clear pattern of Rahul undermining India’s sovereignty. Why would Rahul do that? A political system doesn’t choose as its leader someone who demonstrably undermines it. A nation won’t choose a renegade as prime minister. Rahul and Sonia Gandhi know that. So, why is he self-destructing? First, it could be to reclaim the Muslim vote, fanning the community’s fear and mistrust of the Modi government. Is it effective? No. No party today can win elections by alienating the Hindu vote, relying only on Nehruvian seculars and Muslims. Even Muslims don’t vote in mass, and back regional parties which have a better chance than the Congress in the states. Second, he is hopelessly stuck in his comfort zone of far-Left politics – like a confused rich kid finding his ‘cool’ in elitist woke activism, his anger against Modi and RSS finding an anchor in the dissent politics of Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders (both just got roundly whipped by voters). Third and the most ominous explanation for this political kamikaze could be that Rahul has given up. Maybe he has abandoned all hope of coming back to power. The brash utterings at broadcasts, childish swipes on social media, radical NGO activism, taking online tutorials from experts (a fumbling spectacle with zero mass connect), and a petulant teenager-like relationship with the nation… all point to dismay. And that is dangerous for India: Its main Opposition leader making his pyrrhic way out of a failed job with a bad imitation of Joker in The Dark Knight: “Some men just want to watch the world burn.”
