Mrs. Hudson attends the first ever birthday party in 221B.

The fact that Epiphany and Sherlock’s birthday fell on the same date, should surprise no one. He’s quite smug about it himself, like the drama queen he is. I’m inserting an eyeroll right here! This is me a tiny bit inebriated with one glass too many of Tawny Port. No matter, it’s been a lovely day…

My Sacher Torte turned out to be perfect. The sponge had just the right consistency, the apricot jam I bought was exquisite and the chocolate glaze appeared shiny and rich. Sherlock almost drooled when he saw it. 

“Happy birthday, Sherlock,” I say after I hand the cake to John. 

I go over to hug him, and he embraces me for a long time, whispering his thanks, and finishes with kissing my cheek. His eyes are more green than blue today, and they shine bright. He’s happy, I realise. 

Molly comes straight from the airport, a curtesy of Mycroft apparently, which Sherlock scoffs about, but only out of habit it seems. There’s no trace of hostility, and Molly brings a gift that makes Sherlock beam inappropriately. 

“You got your hands on his ears!” Sherlock exclaims when he’s unwraps and opens the small box. 

Molly blushes furiously and looks utterly pleased with herself. Her blush deepens when Sherlock kisses her cheek and thanks her more politely than I’ve ever witnessed him do. 

“Perhaps wait with those until the party’s over?” John suggests mildly with such fondness in his voice, it almost makes me blush too. 

“Of course, John,” Sherlock agrees softly, though I can see he aches to examine whoever’s ears Molly has gifted him.

After my fourth, or was it the fifth glass of port, I take my leave. Molly accompanies me downstairs to collect Tim. I’ll miss him, but in the long run, I think he’s better off with Molly. I’m too accustomed to live alone, and Tim’s onslaught on my furniture is something I can do without. Besides, what I saw before I descended to my flat, made it quite clear that my taxing days are over. 

I turned to close the door to 221b behind me and right there, in front of the fireplace, John cupped Sherlock’s face in his hands, while Sherlock’s hands were secured around John’s waist. Just before their lips met, I heard John’s whisper, and it made my heart swell with affection for the two men. 

“Happy birthday, my love.”

mrs hudson folding away eleanor's old clothes. not the clothes she wears when she is roger's advisor, or his wife. but the clothes she wore when she was fighting to control nassau herself. eleanor's diary entry where she talks of how forcing herself into this role limits her influence. roger's seeing a misremembered version of her knitting in the corner. she was dead before that house. she has been dead a long time.

We as a society don't talk often about how the ending given to My Fair Lady by Hollywood is absolutely rubbish.

Eliza Doolittle from the start is shown as an independent woman who only wants to gain skills to further her career. Yes for a brief moment there she is attracted to Professor Higgins but I like to attribute it to proximity for a long period of time (6 months according to the wager) but after the Embassy Ball she calls Higgins out for his highhanded, misogynistic personality. Then why is she shown to go back to him to in the end?

George Bernard Shaw, writer of Pygmalion from which the plot of My Fair Lady is drawn up, protested the ending till 1938 that Eliza going back to Higgins is unacceptable to him and he gives a marvelous explanation for it

"When Eliza emancipates herself – when Galatea comes to life – she must not relapse. She must retain her pride and triumph to the end. When Higgins takes your arm on 'consort battleship' you must instantly throw him off with implacable pride; and this is the note until the final 'Buy them yourself.' He will go out on the balcony to watch your departure; come back triumphantly into the room; exclaim 'Galatea!' (meaning that the statue has come to life at last); and – curtain. Thus he gets the last word; and you get it too."

According to Shaw Eliza and Freddy get married and are happily running a green grocery-cum-flower shop. Freddy is truthfully a much better choice, yeah he is a himbo but he is kind, doesn't look down on Eliza and loves her for who she is unlike Higgins whose goal is to mould her into what a perfect woman is according to him.

Two well known versions of My Fair Lady are

Rex Harrison plays Professor Higgins in both.

1) The Broadway version in 1956 starring the magnificent Julie Andrews (of Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Victor Victoria, Princess Diaries, etc.) and John Michael King (from various musical theaters)

And

2) My Fair Lady 1964 starring the iconic Audrey Hepburn (of Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Roman Holiday, Charade, etc.) Hepburn's father was a Nazi sympathizer but she danced to secretly raise money for the Dutch Resistance against the Nazis even though she was literally starving. Her mother and she also denounced their royal heritage because of the Nazis in the family. She was a UNICEF ambassador and continued to do humanitarian work even while diagnosed with cancer.

Not sorry for getting sidetracked, I am sick of people remembering her as just a pretty face.

and the dynamic Jeremy Brett (of Dracula, Rebecca [In this Mrs. Danvers played by Anna Massey; she and Brett had divorced by then], various Shakespeare plays, and most popularly known for Granada's The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes, etc. [More famously known as the most faithful adaption of Sherlock Holmes where Holmes isn't a condescending know-it-all but an empathic, cheeky, genius. It also does justice to other character such as Dr. Watson {Victorian Husbands}, Mrs. Hudson {Not just a character for laughs}, and most especially Irene Adler who is often portrayed as a notch on Holmes' bedpost and not the brilliant woman she was and for whom Holmes had immense respect] He has also played both Dorian Gray & Basil Hallward as well as Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson). Also well known for his work in mental health

Sorry, got distracted a huge Holmes aficionado and it is a wonderful series

In both Eliza returns to Higgins and while yeah actors didn't have much sway in the plot direction but I do wish someone had stayed true to Shaw and if not him then at least to Eliza.

Metamorphoses a poem by the Roman poet Ovid is the basis for this story. In it the sculptor Pygmalion is disgusted by prostitutes and decides to remain celibate but then creates a statue of a woman whom he deems perfect and falls in love with her, and yes he does the deed with it. Later Venus brings the statue to life and they live 'happily ever after'.

This is awful beyond measure 'cause what is this other than society and patriarchy shaping women into what they think is right. Not that I am surprised that Ovid is the creator of it. His other famous story of Medusa is that she was raped in Athena's temple by Poseidon and then Athen cursed her, is a well known to all. Few know that in the Greek version she is the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto and her and Poseidon get together in a field. Athena is nowhere in the Greek story but of course Ovid just had to go ahead and butcher it and put two women down.

Honestly, why don't we follow Shaw's version more or if that is unacceptable then let Eliza remain what she is at the start an independent woman who takes good care of herself.

It galls me that fanfiction fails here with all the stories being of Eliza and Higgins pairing. Why are we doing this?

Sherlock's diary:

John was helping Mrs. Hudson in the garden when Lestrade called, so I went alone, obviously much to John's annoyance, and I quote: " You ran off again, but we had a deal, Sherlock! "

Now he is extremely angry, but all I can see is my John in a t-shirt, finally without today's choice of hideousness because he removed the jumper and tossed it aside.

Lucky me...

Maybe I should offer to get him a sandwich from downstairs, he could use the energy... later!

The tabby domestic cat had been brought on board by Harry McNish, the ship's carpenter known as "Chippy", and was given her name before it was discovered that she was a male. Mrs Chippy is described as a handsome, affectionate and good-natured cat. He proved to be a good catcher of mice and rats and was a favourite among the crew. The men were amused by the way Mrs Chippy seemed to enjoy strutting across the roofs of the kennels, always just out of reach of the rampaging dogs. What's more, the cat's climbing skills, even in the roughest seas, earned him respect. At the beginning of the voyage, on 13 September 1914, Mrs Chippy jumped through a porthole and fell into the sea. The officer on watch, Huberht Hudson (1886-1942), turned the ship around and had the cat brought back on board with the fishing net of biologist Robert Clark (1882-1950).

When the Endurance, which had already been trapped by pack ice in January 1915, could no longer withstand the pressure and sank at the end of October, Shackleton ordered all animals of no concrete use - three puppies, the sled dog Sirius, who could not be harnessed like the others, and Mrs Chippy - to be shot. In his book South, he later quoted his diary, saying that under the new circumstances they could not have afforded to feed "weaklings". The captain of the Endurance, Frank Worsley, defended Shackleton's decision in 1931 by pointing out that the cat would have been eaten by the dogs without the protection of the ship. In the case of Mrs Chippy and the puppies, it fell to Second Officer Thomas Crean to carry out the sentence.

Harry McNish never forgave the expedition leader. His resentment led to growing tensions between the two men, which one day culminated in an attempt by McNish to openly disobey orders. Although as a carpenter he undoubtedly played an important part in the successful rescue of the entire crew of the Endurance, he was one of the few who were not honoured with the Polar Medal for "disloyalty". He died in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1930 and was given a pauper's burial in the Karori Cemetery there. It was not until 1959 that the New Zealand Antarctic Society donated a gravestone to the veteran. In 2004, the society commissioned sculptor Chris Elliott to create a life-size bronze sculpture of Mrs Chippy, which has adorned McNish's grave ever since.

Yes, I am talking about The Lost Cases, The Private Diary of John Watson, The Vanishing Heiress by Sage Boscombe.

This novella is the 3rd chapter in a serie featuring John Watson & Sherlock Holmes, with a focus on their personal relationship.

In case you didn't know, let me be clear : they are in love! With each other! In a very gay way!

(Just tought I would clear that up)

Now, onto the story :

➡️ Sherlock and John find themselves *cough* interrupted *wink* with a message from a rich man whose daughter has been missing for a month, and who desperately needs their help finding her and bringing her back.

He's not a sympathetic man, his temper seems to flare up quite easily, and he's clearly not used to not getting his way.

But he is obviously very distraught by his daughter's disappearance, and the police are of no help. So our favorite duo decides to investigate the matter.

They end up going to Barts, Watson's old university, to interview a good friend of the missing young woman, who might or might not know what happened to her.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

In the previous chapters, I was enchanted by the silliness, cuteness, and romantic aspects of John & Sherlock's story.

And those are still there ! Very much so !

The scene involving Mrs Hudson (you'll know wich one when you read it), in particular, has me roaring with laughter every time I re-read it !

The "aaaaaww" dimension is also very much present on several occasions.

⚠️ The reason I'm explaining all this is to make sure you keep that in mind as you move on with the rest of my comment, because it's not all sweet and roses.

I have to say, very rarely have I read a story that gut-wrenching, and yet hopefull & wholesome at the same time.

Here we start seeing more concretely what it meant at that time to be qu33r in London. And while it would have been easy to focus it all on misery, despair, or ostracism, the author beautifully showed hope, resilience, solidarity, and acceptance.

Not only is it very well-written, it's also a lovely continuation of the previous chapters, absolutely believable in terms of characters' development, & a great way to explore these 2 sweet men's universe some more.

I can never recomend these novellas enough.

Mrs. Hudson decides to go upstairs to check on the boys.

January 4

My mood was a bit better this morning. Emptying my heart, even to an animal, lifted the spirits a bit. Besides, I remembered how excited Sherlock had sounded when he beckoned John to hurry yesterday. Could it be the beginning of them finding their way back to what they once were to each other? I decided to go upstairs to observe for myself later in the day. 

“Ah, Hudders! You bring gifts, I see,” Sherlock greets me when I enter 221B for the first time this year. 

“Aren’t you clever! Ever considered being a detective?” I ask teasingly. 

There’s something about his stance that makes my heart flutter. He seems relaxed, and happy, his smile is the genuine one he reserves for me and John. Was yesterday a turning point after all? When John greets me equally joyous, my own smile brightens, and a warmth sets in my chest. 

“Is that jammy dodgers, I see?” John asks with beaming eyes. 

I roll my eyes at him, and he chuckles, and is soon joined by Sherlock’s deep rumble. If I died right now, it would be a happy death. 

“Join us and I’ll put the kettle on,” Sherlock says and walks to the kitchen before I can reply. 

I send John a questioning look. Since when did Sherlock make the tea when John’s around? I admit that I pinched my inner arm discretely to ensure I wasn’t dreaming.

As I write this, my hands are shaking slightly. From joy, I might add. The hours I spent with the boys today, mended my broken heart and made my soul quite hopeful for the year lying before us. Apparently, the boys have started to move towards each other, which became quite evident with how they spoke to the other, and on a few occasions even touching the other’s shoulder or hand. I made sure to pinch myself numerous times and I’m happy to report that my arm and thigh are bruised by my own onslaught. If this day had all been a dream, it would’ve broken me, that’s for sure. 

Tim sensed the shift in my mood, I think, because he’s started behaving quite mischievous as cats have a tendency of doing…

If you didn't get any books that wowed you for the holidays, these three volumes of The Illustrators series would be a great end of December gift to yourself. Each has a mix of text (biography and bits about the artist's work), finished illustrations, and sketches.

This volume has a few bits of non-Moomin work, including a self-portrait in oils, though most of the illustrations are of Jansson's most famous characters. There are, unfortunately, only a few early versions of her illustrations for The Hobbit inside.

Simmonds started making comics when she was very young, and there are examples from when she was nine or ten. The book places more emphasis on her editorial illustrations and comics for adults (Cassandra Darke, Gemma Bovary, Tamara Drewe, and Mrs. Weber's Diary) than her picture book illustrations, though I probably wouldn't give this book to a child. My favorite drawing in the book is of her workspace.

The fantastic thing about many of Bemelmans' art is that they're so simple that it's easy to see how they were drawn, yet so elegant that it's also easy to see his genius. I loved Madeline before I picked this up, but this book made me a fan, and now I'm out to track down a few of his other books that I first saw here.
