I think that you should watch Mobile Suit Gundam, a very serious show about the horrors of war.

Strap in, it gets so much worse than this. We're all in it together.
This, the stuff with Elan-4, and the stuff in the Prologue is just showing us that it's a Gundam series.
We haven't reached Victory, Zeta, or even SEED levels of grim depravity yet.
The one thing I'll say this show has above the rest is that, with the exception of Hathaway's Flash, this is the best animation we've gotten when they've shown us the abyss. So it hits just a little bit harder.
Real talk, and this is where we start getting kinda in the weeds, that last scene might have even been a reference to MSG0079/Doan's Island to a similar incident with Amuro, cause if there's one thing Gundam loves it's their self-references.
so the last Gundam series i had watched was the og Mobile Suit Gundam back when that was on toonami when i was super young, so i dont remember alot of it.
ive seen people be like “oh, gundams pretty messed up. hope youre ready” and i didnt know what they were talking about
but uh..
i get it now.
holy shit, do i get it..

SEED was pretty great but Destiny was just crap, there was some behind the scenes drama where one of the show runners went off the rails and started accusing all of the female VA's of hitting on her husband, who was the other show runner, to the point that the VA for Cagalli (Naomi Shindou) refused to come back for the remasters and any subsequent content like Super Robot Wars.
After that was Mobile Suit Gundam 00 in the Anno Domini timeline, which had two seasons at 51 episodes total, that one was a weird combination of concepts from the Wing, SEED, and Universal Century timelines. It also holds the record of having the most Gundams in it that weren't part of the UC timeline on that Tier List. With there being 4 total and 2 being in the Killer of God tier (GNT-0000 00 Qan[T] and GNT-0000 ELS Qan[T]), beating UC's 1 (Unicorn) or tying their 2 if you count the G-Self (second from the right at the top).
After that things started speeding up quite a bit, the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn's OVA form came out for the UC timeline over 7 episodes between 2010-2014, at the end of that they started up Gundam Reconguista in G, which is both supposed to take place in same universe as the UC timeline but hundreds (or thousands, it's murky) of years later. G-Reco wasn't really the smash hit that they expected it to be, mostly because it's kind of a mess and for some weird reason Tomino really really didn't want to focus on the fight scenes.
After and sorta during that time they spun up Iron Blooded Orphans, which is another completely different timeline, this time called Post Disaster. That one was another 50 episode, 2 season, run which had an amazing first season run, a sorta shitty second season, but an amazing final arc. This one focuses on a child soldier run PMC and really feels like a much smaller story compared to the world shattering things some of the other timelines deal with. Definitely recommend checking it out.
After that wrapped up they decided enough people like Unicorn that they'd give it a full run and took the 7 episode OVA and fleshed it out to a full 22 episodes. I'm not exaggerating that this is probably the best animation that Gundam has EVER had, it is full movie tier animation for every single goddamn episode. Even if you don't like the story it's worth it. It does take place in the UC timeline though, so unless you have an understanding of that history you might be confused. If you're interested in watching this one I'd say watch/read retrospectives on MSG0079, Zeta, and Chars Counter Attack. After that you're good to go.
That brings us to now, with G-Witch, and I really hope this lives up to at least IBO. Considering the entire writing staff is basically the same group that did Code Geass it could be amazing or it could flub the landing. So fingers crossed.
This is a weirdly super accurate powerscaling tier list that I didn't think I'd ever see and for some reason it's pissing a lot of Gundam fans off because they're not understanding the concept. Apparently we've crested the bellcurve and kids these days don't do powerscaling lists anymore.

Agreed, definitely CAN NOT watch The Origin till after you've seen MSG0079 and Zeta at the very least, with how much it retcons about his actions it might as well have been written by him after the fact.
Thunderbolt wasn't SUPPOSED to be an AU, but thanks to Thunderbolt and Psycho-Zaku getting way WAY too powerful for their place in the timeline it was decided to split them off into this weird pseudo AU of the UC where they're both UC and not UC at the same time. Still a great series, but shouldn't be watched as part of a UC timeline watch and more of it's own thing as it'd be confusing otherwise.
Hey veteran Gundam fans
What would you guys recommend for us newcomers to watch while we impatiently wait for April to get here?
I’d personally prefer something that.. left me just as distraught as the finale of G-Witch did.
