The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige’s anthems of resilience & empowerment have inspired a legion of loyal fans – particularly women – while influencing virtually every R&B artist of the last twenty years.
born Mary Jane Blige (/blaɪʒ/ BLYZHE; born January 11, 1971) she is an American singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur
Blige signed with Uptown Records in 1989, becoming the label’s youngest and first female artist. Her debut singlehandedly kick-started the hip-hop soul genre and produced Number One R&B hits “Real Love” and “You Remind Me.” Her image – oversized jerseys, backwards baseball hats, and combat boots – introduced a new look to R&B music, and her lyrics embraced an authenticity that resonated with fans – especially women. Her mid-1990s hits with the Notorious B.I.G., Method Man, and JAY-Z created the blueprint for R&B/hip-hop collaborations for decades to follow.
Blige emerged as a songwriter with hits “Be Happy” and “My Life” from her sophomore effort My Life, while her song “Not Gon’ Cry” showcased the emotional ache of Blige’s affecting vocals. The 2000s ushered in more success with Number One hits “Family Affair” and Grammy-winning “Be Without You.” Blige continues to craft hits, including her ode to unapologetic happiness “Just Fine,” critically acclaimed London Sessions, and collaborations with Inductees Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, and Missy Elliott. In 2018, she received two Oscar nominations for the film Mudbound and became the first person nominated for acting and original song in the same year. In 2022, Blige co-headlined the Super Bowl halftime show alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem – earning her an Emmy.
Blige’s music echoes our experiences with love and life. She helps us move on, move out, and move up. She’s the much-needed soundtrack to our heartache, vulnerability, and courage to refuse to accept anything less than we deserve. Long Live Queen Mary J!

Mary J. Blige: A Journey of Resilience and Triumph
Mary J. Blige's life story is a poignant narrative of overcoming trauma and emerging as a symbol of resilience and empowerment. In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Grammy-winning singer and actress revealed a dark chapter from her past – being sexually abused as a child by a family friend at the tender age of five.
The impact of this abuse was profound, leading Blige to grapple with feelings of worthlessness and guilt throughout her formative years. She candidly expressed her confusion, stating, "I didn't know how to deal with it. I didn't understand why it happened to me. I thought I did something wrong. I thought I was dirty and ugly."
Blige's teenage years were marked by turmoil, self-destruction, and a search for solace in alcohol, drugs, and unhealthy relationships. However, her life took a transformative turn when she discovered her passion for music. Joining a local church choir and impressing record label executives with her powerful voice and raw emotion, she secured a contract and released her debut album, "What's the 411?" in 1992, marking the beginning of her remarkable career.
Music became Blige's sanctuary as she poured her heart and soul into her songs, using them as a means of catharsis and emotional expression. Simultaneously, she sought professional help and engaged in a 12-step program to overcome addiction, learning to forgive herself and heal from her past.
Today, Mary J. Blige stands as a beacon of success, having sold over 80 million records worldwide, earned nine Grammy Awards, and received two Oscar nominations for her acting in "Mudbound" (2017). Widely hailed as the "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul," she is not just an influential figure in the music industry but also an icon of empowerment and resilience.

Friends, if you're not already following @overlookedwwiimedia, you definitely should be. They do a great job deep diving through what is a huge body of work and finding some real gems. I'm going to add a couple of my own favorites to what is already a great list.
🌟Memphis Belle (1945) - William Wyler's contemporary documentary on the 8th Air Force.
Combat America (1945) - Clark Gable's recruiting film for the 8th.
A Yank in the RAF (1941) - Tyrone Power picture about the Eagle Squadron, American pilots who joined the RAF
Flying Tigers (1942) - John Wayne picture about the American Volunteer group, American pilots who flew with the Chinese.
First Light (2010) - follows the story of Geoffrey "Boy" Wellum, one of the youngest men to fly for the RAF.
Brylcreem Boys (1998) - life in a POW camp in neutral Ireland
🌟Red Tails (2012) - I thoroughly enjoyed this movie the last time I was on a 'planes go zoom' kick.
🌟Dunkirk (2017) - The three tracks of Land, Sea, and Air mean that this movie isn't entirely about planes but it's still one of my favorites.
🌟Mudbound (2017) - two soldiers come home to the post-war south. Everyone should watch this.
Hey friend! Any chance you could put together a list of World War Two movies/shows involving planes? In advance of Masters of the Air, of course.
Hello hello!
Thank you for the ask and absolutely! I've pulled together and linked reviews to different series and movies I've reviewed over the years here, they're just in the order I reviewed them with ⭐ next to the ones that were personal favorites!
⭐Catch-22 (2019)
Midway (2019)
Piece of Cake (1988)
⭐One of Our Aircraft is Missing (1942)
The First of the Few (1942)
⭐Canopy (2013)
Tuskegee Airmen (1995)
Command Decision (1948)
⭐Twelve O'Clock High (1949)
I fully expect Masters of the Air to make this list of movies/shows focused on planes when it premieres in January!
