MiK 2 in New Zealand’s most unique geothermal experience Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve and Mud Spa in Tikitere Rotorua. More than just a place of myth and legend, this land has the power to heal and excite anyone who meets it.

At the northeast of Rotorua, is located Hells Gate in Tikitere, the Māori name given to the thermal park and surrounding area. This land, where the earth boils, mud heals, and steam disappears into the clouds above, inspired myths and legends.

New Zealand's only geothermal mud bath is a complex where visitors can immerse themselves in the silky smooth warm geothermal mud and sulphurous waters of the Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve that have been used for healing and well-being by the Māori -Ngati Rangiteaorere tribe has lived in the area for more than 700 years. It's a unique iconic New Zealand visitor experience. The whole area has held onto its rich Māori culture, tradition and history – perhaps more so than anywhere else they’ve been in New Zealand –.

Once used by Māori warriors to heal their battle-scarred bodies, visitors now use the nutrient-rich waters and mud to ease inflammation, arthritis, as well as rejuvenate the skin. This unique blend of awe-inspiring power and natural healing properties is a thing of cultural legend - having been used for centuries.

This was, unsurprisingly, one of their favourite part of the tour, nothing feels better than a baby's soft skin and finding mud in your ear two days later. Sam and Graham enjoyed the experience in a self-guided tour of the Geothermal Reserve Park, which also included the mud bath and spa.

Though the pools are all close together and look like they’re surely part of the same source of activity, most have vastly different temperatures and depths.

Despite the park being formally named “Hells Gate” after the playwright George Bernard Shaw dubbed it so during his visit in the early 1900s, it remains the only Māori-owned thermal park in New Zealand.

40 - favourite memory

I live in the UK but my sister lives in New Zealand right now, and a couple of years ago I flew out to visit her and then did a solo trip around the North Island, and I did some amazing things, like... I did a 16,000 feet skydive, and I learnt to surf, and I did white water rafting down the world's largest commercial waterfall, and I went spelunking in a glowworm cave which included a solo rapel down a 100 meter waterfall in the pitch black (which was horrible btw - don't go spelunking), and I went zorbing on the world's fastest track, and I hitchhiked, and I had a campfire on the whitesand beach, and I went to a geothermic mudspa, and I went on the Luge track which is basically extreme go-kart down a volcano, and I went to Hobbiton, and... Fuck I did even more than that too. But this post has grown far too long as it is so im gonna end this now.
