Every now and then I think about how Arthur never really knew if John got away, sure he said "John was the only one who made it, he got away" but he couldn't actually know, it was more provocative speech than anything, he didn't know if John made it to the boat, to his family.
John was on foot, wounded, having to run from Beaver Hollow to Copperhead Landing, while Joe, Cleet, the Pinkertons, and the Mufree Brood were out there, he had a lot bigger risk of being shot down than making it.
I think even if John had died, Arthur wouldn't have regretted giving his brother a chance at making it to his family, but I think he would have cried knowing that Abigail and Jack were truly alone and that he couldn't give John the life he deserved, that Arthur wished he had had.

Arthur is out of camp for a while, so Charles tracks him down to the mufrees cave thing. Seeing what the murfrees were doing, he starts panicking because he can't see Arthur. As he enters the cave he follows a trail of Murfrees corpses, and rounds a corner to see Arthur drenched almost head to toe in blood doodling in his journal like "found a hide out today"

The shots echoed like a sudden thunderclap against the heaven trees. Birds rose in a panic to the darkened skies, screaming in alarm. It caught her off guard, but it seemed to have affected the Mufrees even more. A shrill yelling from one of the men told her something was wrong. Twisting her body to get a better look, Maddy saw one of the men slump forward in a bloodied mess. Another shot accompanied soon after, this time hitting the other man in the body. She couldn't say where, but it been fatal.
The two nags panicked and raced for a few feet until calm settled over them, causing the wagon to slow to a complete stop. The animals huffed and frothed, stamping their hoofs nervously. Silence.
Maddy held her breath, listening for any clue that would give the gunman away. Who had shot them? She wanted to count her blessings, and thank her makers for the interface, but this was hostile land. It couldn't have been the law, they didn't dare send their men into the den of the dragon. the people from Annesburg stayed clear of these areas knowing damn well what brutality the Murfrees were able to dish out.
Her heart races in her chest and then the sound of spurred boots in the night. A lone stranger stepped into the flickering light of the lantern, causing the brim of the hat to cast heavy shadows on his face. He was a handsome man. Rather rugged man and scruffy but handsome. His gravelly voice pulled her out of her fear, as scared blue eyes looked back at the stranger.
-"Y-Yes! Please, sir, I will be forever thankful!"
Maddy scooted closer to the edge of the wagon, and closer to the helpful stranger. Well, she prayed that he was helpful, beggars couldn't be choosers under such dire situations as this. When the rope was cut, the woman groaned in relief. She quickly got off the wagon, hissing when she examined the bruised and raw skin of her wrists.
She looked like she had been dragged through hell and back. Her clothes were torn and dirtied with smudge and blood, if it was her own or from the two bodies in the wagon was unknown. Her ginger curls were in wild disarray. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, her face dirty with dried blood and grime, with visible tear stains.
-"Thank you, sir! You saved my life! I-I can't thank you enough!!"
Maddy's voice quivered, nearly on the verge of crying again.

It had been complete pandemonium when it all happened. For the longest time, there had been peace and quiet surrounding in area. She had lived a fairly good life for several years after settling down close to Annesburg. The German immigrants working the mines were thrilled over the arrival of a doctor close to them, with the added bonus of it being one that could speak German.
Maddy had found a place that needed help. The miners got sick from the horrid conditions they worked under, and who knew what terrible things they breathed in when mining? The prostitutes had little money, much like the miners, but Maddy’s service was cheap, and she always welcomed them. Truthfully she had never cared about the money, she had enough as it was, she just wanted to help the hardworking man and woman, who struggled to get by daily.
Yes, life had been good and quiet until the Murfree brood had decided to pop their ugly mugs out. They terrorized the area, butchering, torturing and mutilating for fun, devouring the flesh of men and raping women before killing them too. People knew to stay clear of them. Even the law refused to set foot here, which meant the only people to protect the townsfolk were themselves. Even being cautious and keeping away from certain areas couldn’t always keep you safe. Often a wagon, a rider or some poor unfortunate souls would find themselves in the path of the Murfree brood, leaving nothing but a mutilated and bloodied carnage behind them.
Seems like the Murfrees had finally decided to go after the doctor. She was an easy target; A woman living alone close to Annesburg with no one around her to come to her aid. They had grabbed her from her clinic, tied her up, and stolen every last bit of valuables she had before throwing her into the back of their wagon as if she was a pig’s carcass. Two other doomed souls had already met their end with their throats slashed open and empty eyes staring into nothing.
Maddy knew what would happen to her, she knew her time had come, but it didn’t stop her from screaming and fighting against her strains. The coarse rope gnawed into her pale skin, nibbling and scratching until her flesh was raw. She kicked, screamed and thrashed about, all while the two men barked up sadistic waves of laughter over her turmoil.
All was lost. If she had to die now she would at least die knowing she did nothing but help people. The scared woman she once was had been left behind when she had run away, and she had managed to put her past life behind her. At least…
At least she changed the lives of some people in Annesburg.
Arthur didn’t really LIKE this place. To put it lightly.
The woods had some good hunting, which was what drew him out in his area to begin with. He had been searching for this MOOSE. It apparently was worth something, considering the map of animals that Hosea had handed over to him after that ordeal with that bear. To avoid getting mauled out this far, Arthur figured a moose wouldn’t be all that bad if he didn’t get too close. He knew the temperament–they weren’t DEER, and with one this size? Well, he wasn’t looking to get its attention.
Though, he didn’t have to worry about that too much, considering it wasn’t in the area at the time. He could track it, he figured, but he had no place to start and he wasn’t looking to start climbing up into the cliffsides or head further into the woods on the CHANCE he might catch it. Plus, he was exhausted, the dampness of the air and soaked into his clothing and his patience was thin.
Trying to camp was useless, too, given the gun he got pressed to the base of his skull by some folk that apparently lived in the woods. Murfree Brood, apparently. No good hillbilly bastards, more like it. They’d left him with a warning, and Arthur kicked himself for not leaving them with bullet holes once his surprise had worn off.
It was at that point that he had settled on just heading to Van Horn–he’d take that run-down room over having to deal with them. He’d catch a train back out in the Heartlands the following day. Though, he didn’t get very far in that thought when the sound of SCREAMING caught his attention. He pulled back on Vik’s reins, turning his head toward the sound. It was hard to see in the darkness, even with the lantern he had. However, he could see a lantern moving between the trees, a wagon upon further observation. More yelling–if he had to guess, it had something to do with the men he had found out in the woods.
Making his mind up, he quickly snuffed out his own light before spurring his horse into a gallop after them. It would have been easier to navigate with his own light, but the darkness gave him enough cover to approach once he got close enough. His hunch was right–the wagon containing bodies, one of which was still alive. Arthur pulled out his repeater, taking aim once he got close enough and fired at the driver. The man’s head snapped forward once the bullet hit his skull, his passenger turning around quickly to retaliate in time for Arthur to fire off another shot that hit him in the chest. He crumpled and rolled off the wagon. Arthur pulled Vik to a slower pace as the horses pulling the wagon eventually came to stop a few feet from him.
“That the last I’m gonna see ‘f you today? Damn,” he muttered as an aside to the two men he had just killed before he rode toward the wagon.
Slowing Vik to a stop behind it, Arthur got off the saddle and walked up to the wagon. His gaze lingered on the two corpses for a few moments–clearly they weren’t PEACEFUL deaths. Then he turned his gaze on the woman still alive.
“Miss?” he asked, trying to access if she was in shock or not. “Everythin’s alright now. Can I cut these ropes from you?”

SPEAKING AS AN AUDIOPHILE, dont invest in expensive in-ear earphones!! They break super fast. I bought a Sennheiser Momentum In-Ear around October last year and sometime in January, I accidentally left it in my pants pocket and broke it when the pants was laundering in our washing machine. It was totally my fault. One ear failed to work and the other's sound quality wavers. Being a real music trash™, I cant make myself use it anymore.
Anyway, I learned my lesson and bought a much much cheaper Rock Space Mufree Stereo Earphone. Im not advertising one earphone over the other! The Sennheiser is obviously better in sound quality and I'm still really sad that I broke mine. What I'm trying to say is invest on good headphones instead!!! You get to hear the sound quality better over any good earphones, and they last longer.

She took her time to study him. It was hard with most of his features hidden in the shadow cast by the brim of the hat. After some long seconds passed she lowered her weapon, apparently concluding that he was safe enough. If he was part of the brood he wouldn't have spent his time trying to convince her. They jumped into action and planning was never their strong suit.
-"One can never be too careful 'round these parts. Especially if yous a filly."
The woman replied with a huff. The rifle was placed on her back once more and the basket picked up again. She tossed the red curls over her shoulder, resting the basket on her hip as she looked the man up and down. Being able to see him in full she realised how tall he was. Well, it didn't take much for people to be taller than her, but she never acted like she was a petite lady.
-"You ain't from 'round these parts, sir. Ain't never seen you before and I reckon I know just 'bout every person who lives here. What's yer name, sir?"
Maddy asked with her free hand resting on the other side of the hip. She was a short woman with wild red curls and pale skin covered in freckles. Gunmetal blue eyes looked upon the stranger with reluctance and curiosity. It wasn't often new people dared come up here and the ones that did were scared off by the tales of the Mufree brood's brutality and sadism. However, this feller looked capable enough. Well, many had looked capable enough, but few seldom survived long.
It was almost a lawless country up here. No lawmen dared set foot around these parts because of the brood, which resulted in the good people of Annesburg having to deal with them themselves. But, this man... he looked like a gunslinger. If he was a good one was a whole other matter.
@traumaqueenie Cont'd
Being this far north hadn't really been in his plans. Truth be told, this place gave him the creeps and he wasn't terribly keen on overstaying his welcome. He'd been sent to find some plant or another, he couldn't remember what it was called. Supposedly was good to mix to make medicine, and he'd agreed to go find it, he didn't agree readily however.
It's just when he's gearing up to head back to camp he notices some noise, not the sort of sound usually heard coming from the woods. Grass moving in a particular way, with the rhythm unlike any of the nearby wildlife.
A person maybe?
Curiosity gets the better of him. Wouldn't hurt to rid the world more of the brood. But when he finally draws close enough to see the source of the noise, the silhouette appears to be that of a woman. A normal one. Not one of the crazed brood wandering the woods.
Just before he can speak up, he's staring down the barrel of a repeater. He lifts his hands to just below his chin, not enough that he couldn't try to retaliate if it came to it. But enough to show he meant no harm.
"Apologies, Miss..." Arthur says carefully, staring at the gun, then to her face. She wasn't part of Murfee's brood, he was fairly certain of that. "Was just makin' sure you weren't hurt. This ain't a good place to be wanderin' around."
He gives a small nod, hoping she'll lower her weapon. "I ain't gonna hurt ya. I ain't one of them."

Sometimes I think about how Arthur must feel being out there all alone. I was up hunting the legendary bison near Colter and a snow storm hit, I could barely see anything and I wonder what that must have been like for Arthur.
I mean imagine it, it is night, the storm is howling in your ears, blocking out all other noise to the point you can barely hear the anxious huffs of the horse right underneath you. It is all cut off by the snow raging down, cutting directly through your clothing. What do you do in that situation? You can't see head or tail in anything. You can stay where you are, make camp, and you won't get lost but also there is nowhere for you to put your horse for shelter and the chance of it running off, leaving you stranded is tremendous. On the other hand you can try to seek shelter, but you have no idea which way is which and you could freeze to death before you reach anything and then if you don't find something and strike camp you might have gotten yourself so lost that you can't go back.
That is a nightmare.
Or when Arthur gets bushwacked, ten, fifteen O'Driscolls, or even worse, Mufree Brood suddenly standing in your way both back and forth. For us it might seem like nothing, if we die shooting then we respawn, if we run and get a shot or two we will still be fine, we know no matter what we will be fine because we are the main character. But Arthur, to him, he is just a man, sure a man who is good with a gun but one well-aimed shot and he is gone.
I don't think I would last a day.

The slaughter of the old
In Red Dead Redemption two you can find two referneces to vikings, both of which are points of interest laying in Mufree Brood land and at first glance there is nothing wrong, but when you look into it, it tells a gruesome tale.
The Old World Scrips is a stone you can find about as west as you can possibly travel on the map, and while half of it remains untranslated, the other half tells of friendly folks.

"We arrived by boat. Beautiful land, gracious people. So we left them to live in peace" Is the meaning of the text in the middle, the text in the snake looks to be a mix between Elder Futhark and Younger Futhark, however when translating it just comes out as gipperish to me and I haven't seen anyone have any luck online either.
The second thing which can be found is the Old Tomb which is a half, open, half closed alter tomb, something where you can find the Viking Helmet, the Viking Hatchet and the Viking Comb.
Now the thing about this place is that it makes no sense at all.

This very clearly looks like a sacrifice but vikings weren't keen on human sacrifices, it wasn't a common practice and when it was done, it was done very differently. One of the largest amount of human sacrifices by vikings in one spot was seven in Trelleborg Denmark, which is the remains of a massive old viking fortress. If we look at the pictures, there are clearly more than seven people here, and even with seven, it was over a longer period of time, with those seven people were also over two hundred animal remains. It was not common.
And the few sacrifices that were made were not done like this. Vikings either hung, strangled or drowned their victimes and they would afterwards be thrown into water, often wells as there is a connection between wells and nordic mythology. Which is why you can find a bigger amount of bog bodies in Denmark such as the Grauballe Man and the Tollund Man.
Now my second thought was, maybe it is a burial ground, just a regular one. But vikings did not bury people like this, regular people were just buried like you would to this day, rich people were buried in grave mound, and I highly doubt that this is someone that the vikings fought as they probably would not make this for enemies and also they said they would leave the people in the area to live in peace.
However the vikings were still in that tomb, their things are all over the place, but I see it more possible that the vikings were the victims, not the perpetrators.

In chapter six we see Dutch distract Arthur quite a lot, whenever he asks something Dutch can’t quite answer he will just redirect the convosation and hope Arthur leaves it. However Dutch already does this in chapter one.
Before going off to kill O'Driscolls and get their train job plan, Arthur voices his worries about the fact that the gang has been through a lot and it is a big job to take on so early, Dutch replies by saying "they are here for us," Arthur goes "I doubt that" Dutch says "no you are just doubting me."
Arthur's concern is very real and exactly the same he has in chapter 6 during "this is mufree country", the gang is tried, they need a proper plan, and just like in chapter 6 Dutch doesn't reply to this valid concern with a valid answer but just makes it seem that Arthur has lost all trust.
That is not even to mention that thinking the O'Driscolls are there for them, like having hiked up a mountian in a snow storm for them specifically, despite having been told they are there for a job, is lowkey a bit of a reach.
