Pls give recommendations for Odd books 🙏
Here we go, a list of literary oddity :) This post contains majestic spheres, alien taxonomies, cruel subway polytheism, a fourth-dimensional cat, disturbing earthworms, infinite space football, existential mussel terror, a Parisian absurdist time loop, and a picture of a telegraph-pole-man-cheetah. I'm not exactly recommending these books, in the sense that I won't take any complaints if you find them more odd than good, and some of them transcend the concepts of good and bad anyway.
• The Other City, Michal Ajvaz. It's all like this:
Tumblr media
• Contes du demi-sommeil, Marcel Béalu ('Half-asleep tales') —is the book that prompted my post about stories that have no ambition or justification beyond being odd. I'm sad that it hasn't been translated :( One of the tales is about a strange opaline sphere that rolls on the road. It doesn't accelerate when the road becomes a steep slope but continues rolling majestically. At one point it floats away towards the sky. Someone wonders if it was the moon. Someone else says authoritatively "It was an angel's egg." Everyone is reassured by this explanation. The whole thing feels exactly like remembering a dream you had. There is also a man who reads too much and whose body atrophies so only his head is left and his wife puts it in an egg cup for better stability.
• Leonora Carrington— The Skeleton's Holiday, or maybe the Hearing Trumpet. I've read them so long ago but I think the latter is the one with the old ladies and nuns? There's also a guy who was murdered in his bath by a still-life painter because he said there was a carrot in one of his paintings, but it might not have been a carrot? It's hard to remember details from this book without feeling like I might be making them up. Bonus Leonora Carrington painting which kind of feels like a short story:
Tumblr media
• The Codex Seraphinianus, of course. I wish there were more bizarre encyclopaedias out there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I love this review:
Tumblr media
• Sleep Has His House, Anna Kavan —I really liked the way this book used language; making life feel like a fever dream even more than in Samanta Schweblin's Fever Dream (which I really liked too.)
The eye is checking a record of silence, space; a nightmare, every horror of this world in its frigid and blank neutrality. The actual scope of its orbit depends on the individual concept of desolation, but approximate symbols are suggested in long roving perspectives of ocean, black swelled, in slow undulation, each whaleback swell plated in armour-hard brilliance with the moonlight clanking along it . . .
• The second half of Michael Ende's Neverending Story, where things get stranger! I remember the hand-shaped castle with eyes and the city of amnesiac former emperors and the miserable ugly worms who cry all the time out of shame then create beautiful architecture with their tears...
Tumblr media
• The Gray House, Mariam Petrosyan. This is the one I had in mind when I talked about a 'museum of the strange, but one you wouldn't want to be trapped in after closing time'. Another book that made me feel uncomfortable in a similar (good) way was Edward Carey's Observatory Mansions, the protagonist of which is a man who curates an odd private museum and can't stand the sight of his own hands.
• Oh, speaking of uncomfortable, and hands—He Digs A Hole, by Danger Slater. To me this book was in the more-odd-than-good category but I liked its refusal to have a coherent philosophical meaning. It's about a man who can't sleep so he goes to his garden shed and saws off his hands and replaces them with gardening tools. Then he starts digging a hole. And then it gets weird. (Read at your own discretion if you have a worm phobia; there's some body horror featuring sexually aggressive earthworms. And then it gets disturbing.)
• 17776 — Someone sent me an ask a few years back to recommend this online multimedia narrative to me and I really enjoyed it! Here's the summary, borrowed from the wiki page: Set in the distant future in which all humans have become immortal and infertile, the series follows three sapient space probes that watch humanity play an evolved form of American football in which games can be played for millennia over distances of thousands of miles. The work explores themes of consciousness, hope, despair, and why humans play sports.
• Saint-Glinglin, Raymond Queneau —the author admitted that this book presents some "internal discontinuities." I didn't like it much but I respect the talent it takes to write a novel where everything feels like a random digression, including the key suspenseful scene that matters to the plot. The one digression I loved had to do with the way the narrator is existentially horrified by various sea creatures. It's like he dreads them so much he can't help but think about them when he should be telling a story.
The oyster... This gob of phlegm, this brutal way of refusing the outside world, this absolute isolation, and this disease: the pearl... If I conceptualise them even a little, my terror starts anew. The mussel is even more significant than the oyster and even more immediately admissible in the domain of terror. Let us indeed consider that this little sticky mass whose collective stupidity haunts our piers, consider that it is alive in the same way as a cow. Because there are no degrees in life. There is no more or less. The whole of life is present in every animal. To think that the mussel, that the mussel has, not a conscience, but a certain way of transcending itself: here I am once again plunged into abysses of anxiety and insecurity.
Near the beginning he philosophises about what would happen if a man and a lobster were the only two survivors of the apocalypse. The lobster would break the man's toe and the man would say, "We are the only beings that remain on this devastated Earth, lobster! The only living beings in the universe, struggling alone against the universal disaster, don't you want to be allies?" But the lobster would disdainfully walk away towards the ocean, and "the sight of the inflexible and imperturbable lobster pierces the sky of humanity with its unintelligible claws." (I can't overstate how little this has to do with the rest of the book.)
• Autumn in Beijing, Boris Vian —needless to say the story does not take place in autumn nor in Beijing.* To the extent that it can be said to be "about" something, it's about people trying to build a train station in a desert with tracks that lead nowhere. (I just went on goodreads to check the title, and it's actually called Autumn in Peking in English. I also discovered that it was featured in a list of Books I Regret Reading. I liked this book, but I understand.)
(* French writers love doing this—like when Alphonse Allais said about his 1893 book The Squadron's Umbrella "I chose this title because there aren't any umbrellas of any sort in this volume, and the important notion of the squadron, as a unit of the armed forces, is never brought up at all; in these conditions, hesitating would have been pure madness.")
• The Library at Mount Char, Scott Hawkins—I fear this one makes a little too much sense for this list, but you can't say it isn't weird; and I loved it and recommend it any chance I get.
• The Eleven Million Mile High Dancer, Carol Hill —this book was so wacky and made me laugh. I've not yet managed to successfully recommend it to someone; its brand of odd didn't resonate with the people I know who've read it but that's okay. You could say it's about a woman astronaut whose weird cat disappears into the fourth dimension (or the quantum realm?) and she goes to space to save him—but that makes the book sound more straightforward and less messy than it is. Her cat leaves her a note before he disappears:
Tumblr media
• The Bald Soprano, Ionesco —fun fact, there's a tiny theatre in the Latin Quarter in Paris where this absurdist play has been staged every night for nearly 70 years, with the exact same set design and costumes and everything, like the actors are stuck in a time loop. They celebrated the 20,000th performance this year! There's an actress who has been playing her character for 40 years and said joining this theatre was like joining a religion. I've been going to see this play as a New Year tradition with my best friend since we were 14, so I love it madly, though I wouldn't say it's good, necessarily—the author said it was about "absolutely nothing, but a superior nothing."
• Statuary Gardens; or Les Mers perdues (apparently not translated) by Jacques Abeille. This man is obsessed with weird statues. Unfortunately I find his writing style rather dull—I feel like he takes strange ideas and makes them feel mundane in a bad way...! But his books still have a nice, quiet, oneiric atmosphere, and images that stayed with me, like a solitary gardener trying to grow stone statues in the depleted soil of a walled garden. Here are some illustrations from the second one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll look into some of the books recommended on my previous post! (and I agree with the people who brought up Cortázar, Borges, and Junji Ito. <3) Some potentially-odd books I have on my to-read list: Clive Barker's Abarat, Goran Petrović's An Atlas Traced by the Sky, Salvador Plascencia's The People of Paper, Jean Ray's Malpertuis; Jan Weiss's The House of a Thousand Floors; Brice Tarvel's Pierre-Fendre.

Welcome to the 2025 Stormlight Queer-A-Thon!
Hello! This is the blog for a Stormlight Archive multimedia fandom event spanning the month of June, run by @arborplasm! Its focus is on queer writing and art for, you guessed it, the Stormlight Archive.
Here's how it works: the current plan is that on Saturday, May 24, I'll be posting a list of tropes and prompts for the good people of Tumblr to get some inspiration and begin working on their projects. This is an extremely open-ended endeavor: you can of course use tropes that don't appear on the official list, and you can pick any Stormlight characters you like. Any length, any word count, any way you'd like to create. *Smut IS perfectly allowed, but nothing NSFW will be on the official prompt list. Feel free to get as kinky as you like.*
When the event officially begins on Sunday, June 1st, you can begin posting your creations! Anyone who wishes to join in is absolutely welcome!
Make sure to properly tag book spoilers and content warnings where applicable; let people know what they're getting into. I'll make a collection on AO3, and linking to your newly published fic on Tumblr is encouraged so I can reblog it here --- you can mention this blog in your post and/or tag it with #stormlight queerathon 2025 to help everyone find it.
One thing I'd like to encourage everyone to do is experiment with ideas and ships! Nale in drag. T4T Rlainarin. Butch Jasnah x Femme Venli. Demiromantic Radiant. Kalmoash yuri. Whatever your heart desires. See this as an opportunity to try something new! (If there were a points system, you'd get a *lot* of points for making something for a very rare ship, or even a ship that nobody else has written yet. And you'd get negative points for writing more Kadolin.. that last part is a joke. Mostly.) You can look at this wonderful index that the amazing @isdalinarhot made for ideas!
It should go without saying that terfs, transmeds, antis, and other assorted people-who-need-to-rethink-their-life are not welcome here. Don't harass anyone who posts something you don't like! Any kind of creation is welcome so long as it features queer characters or pairings.
Questions? Comments? Concerns? Spontaneous declarations of love? Inexplicable desires to give me all your money? Leave a reply, send a message, or submit an ask!
Here's to lots of upcoming queer fandom shit!!

THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO WATCHING MILGRAM (as of the end of the 2nd trial)
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
INTRO
What's Milgram? Milgram is a multimedia project whose central concept revolves around the audience judging the character's crimes. All of them stand accused of murder after being brought to the mysterious prison of Milgram, but were their actions truly wrong? Only the audience, through the medium of the amnesiac guard Es, can decide that. Vote them GUILTY or INNOCENT according to your ethics or your whims over the course of three trials , and watch how their lives change in response.
You can read a list of trigger warnings here. Who's working on it? The musical and visual components are led by the vocaloid producer Deco*27 and his employees at OTOIRO, with him working on the lyrics and composing half the songs, while the other half is handled by Rockwell. Teddyloid often works in the songs' arrangement as well. Yamanaka Takuya is in charge of all writing in the MILGRAM project, except for the novels and their manga adaptation which were done by Nami Tsumi. His works tend to revolve around trauma and people's inner darkness, and are often music-related multimedia franchises such as the Caligula Effect series, Utagoe wa Mille-Feuille and Boisterous Six. (Fun fact: the last one was prompted by the thought that if he made a collab with the Takuya Yamanaka who's part of The Oral Cigarettes, maybe people would stop confusing them. It did not work.)
For more details, check the wiki's Staff page.
How do I vote? You'll need an account for either Twitter or LINE (Japanese texting app). Then go to the JUDGE page in the official website and click on the icon of a character that's not grayed out. (If they all are, then you need to wait until the new trial starts). You'll be asked to give the site permission to use your Twitter/LINE account. The website should remember your credentials afterwards. You can vote once a day every day for as long as the poll is open. The general rhythm of the project is that a song releases, then another releases next month and the next one takes two months to come out. Since each poll lasts for three months, this means that there should always be two characters available for voting, unless there are delays or you're at the very end or start of a trial.
How does this guide work? / Usage notes Due to Tumblr's restriction on the amount of links per post, this guide will have three parts. They're organized content according to platform/format, but I also paid mind to original release date and overall importance to the plot.
I recommend watching all the first trial content before starting with the second trial. So, begin with the 1st set of voicelines, then the videos and timelines, then double back onto the second set. Everything from the Illustrations and Previews section onwards isn't part of the main game and can be ignored if desired.
I've added some supplementary notes and explanations when I thought it was relevant. Sometimes the information is part of a larger theory post, but please don't take the link as endorsement of any particular theory.
There will be links to the MILGRAM wiki, which is not spoiler-free. If you navigate to the character's main pages, you will immediately see images that spoil developments in the latest trial. This also applies to the official website's character pages. There will also be Youtube links. Since the suggestions can also contain spoilers, you can copypaste the link into Polsy to avoid them. You'll still get videos thumbnails when you pause or when the video ends, but from what I can see they're limited to the videos found on the uploader's channel.
TRANSLATIONS
Official Website
Character Profiles milgrammer (Click "profile" for each prisoner)
Voicelines First trial: milgrammer (Same as above) Second trial: Rochisama (Section: Voice lines)
A different set of translations can be found in the Milgram wiki. It is also the easiest way to access the audio, as old lines get retired from the official website and Wayback Machine is inconsistent in saving them. The quotes can be found in their own subpage, such as https://milgram.fandom.com/wiki/Momose_Amane/Quotes . Substitute character names accordingly, and keep in mind that Muu and Fuuta's names are spelled with two u's.
According to the writer's tweets, the prompts for the first trial's voicelines are: 1) Introduce yourself. 2) You're a murderer, aren't you? 3) Is there something you'd like to tell the guard (me)? 4) and 5) What do you think about Milgram?
And for the second trial: 1) To the awakened guard 2) Regarding the first trial's results 3) Regarding changes in the second trial 4) Comments on the first trial 5) What do you think about Milgram?
Loading Screen During the first trial, the loading icon for the website displayed the message "Sing your sins." When the second trial started, the icon was changed. Now it looks the same as the first one for a second, then morphs into "Doubt your punishment." You can see a gif of it here.
Youtube Channel
Teasers These are brief videos which feature the characters speaking sentences out of context. So far we've seen some, but not all of them pop up in the series itself. Some seem to take place in the past, so it's likely not all of them will show up. Note that these videos contain flashing lights, chaotic visuals and screaming. Translations can be found in comments. - First season teaser - Second season teaser
Voice Trailers These trailers have normal and glitchy lines. The normal parts are taken from the website voice lines, while the glitchy lines aren't featured anywhere else. Translations for the static-filled lines can be found in the comment section, and Rochisama also translated the second-trial lines in their website. - First season voice trailer - Second season voice trailer
PV Technically our first real intro to the series, but given the unstranslated onscreen text and the dodgy subtitles, it can be skipped. There's some concept art not shown elsewhere; A cleaned up version can be viewed here and here. The website features a lower shot of the same art shown in the last link.
Song trailers These feature short snippets of upcoming content: songs and one sentence per prisoner. You can skip this if you've already watched the songs and voice dramas in question; the only difference is that sometimes the translation is slightly different. - First trial - Second trial
Main Songs, Jackalope Videos and Voice Dramas In-universe, the voice dramas take place before the songs. However, up until midway through the second trial the songs were uploaded first and the albums (containing the dramas) would be released 1-2 weeks later, so it seems the intended viewing order is the other way around. The tracklist order also supports this, so I'll be using the song->voice drama order. ES and Undercover are special cases. Undercover doesn't seem to exist in-universe, with the timeline for this one being A Milgram Anybody Can Understand->ES->Website voicelines. For the sake of consistency, I still used the song->VD ordering, with A Milgram being placed afterwards due to being released later.
Lastly, some of the official English titles are different from the Japanese ones. I wrote down both the official translation, marked (EN), and a translation from Japanese marked (JP)
First trial Official song playlist
Undercover (Instrumental) Notes: Milgram's theme song and its first release. The official subtitles were changed during the second trial to reference the song titles, at the cost of being less accurate to the original Japanese: you can see the original lyrics here. The lamp that shows up at 2:11 says 御霊燈, "spirit lantern." This kind of lantern is placed at the house of the deceased for 49 days after death. It serves to both announce that the family is in mourning and a guide for the spirit of the deceased; fire being a way for ghosts to find their way from and to the afterlife is a common motif in Japanese folklore. The kanji above the scratched-out text reads "deceased." Text on the sticky notes on Mikoto's screen. ES (Text)
A Milgram Anybody Can Understand
Weakness (EN) / The Weak are Meat, Eat your Fellows (JP) (Instrumental) Notes: A theory post analysing the title and word choices used. Writhing of the Weak (Text)
Umbilical (Instrumental) Relative Zero (Text)
Bring It On (Instrumental) Notes: Onscreen text translation. Cultural context on lyrics. Braze you!! (Text)
After Pain (Instrumental) Notes: Onscreen text translation. Crying B (Text)
Throw Down (Instrumental) Notes: Onscreen text translation Moloch (Text)
This Is How to Be in Love With You (EN) / It's Love! (JP) (Instrumental) Notes: Onscreen text translation Love is Mine (Text)
half (Instrumental) Gouging In The Night (EN) / Night of Exposure (JP) (Text)
magic (Instrumental) Notes: Onscreen text translation. (Some corrections: "Happily supporting" is more like "Happiness-supporting" and "Weird Monk" would be "Mysterious Monk.") Apostle and Death (EN) / Apostle and Death and (JP) (Text) Notes: The odd extra "and" in the Japanese title is to make the title sound more repetitive. It's pronounced Shito to Shi to.
MeMe (Instrumental) Notes: The yellow sign at 1:28 reads "WARNING. This is private property! It's not a public dumpster! Don't just throw your trash wherever you like. Anyone caught fly-tipping will be reported immediately. WARNING." The tarot cards (probably) say "MIKOTO TAROT CARD" at the bottom. John Doe (Text) Notes: "Remember your murder" should be "I'll remember that, you murderer!"
Harrow (Instrumental) Notes: Summarized onscreen text translation (highlighted comment). Alternate full translation. TASK (Text) Notes: "Heh, I should be the one thanking you" / "Heh, you’ve gotten the order of expressing gratitude wrong." should be "That's not the kind of face you should be making when thanking somebody"

Sony wants to buy Kadokawa, what does this mean?
So this is a post I didn't think I'd ever have to make, but I guess I will because it concerns two things I'm invested in: anime and video games. And it concerns how we may potentially be seeing those industries get even more consolidated.
Tumblr media
Yesterday on November 19th Reuters reported that Sony was in talks to acquire the massive Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa. As of November 20th, we see that Sony has indeed sent a letter of intent for an acquisition.
Now look, I know we all tend to see Sony as a video game and technology company first and foremost, and I think that has led to a tendency for reports on this story to frame this story as "Sony wants to buy the parent company of FromSoft, what does this mean for Armor Core and Souls games going forward?" Now I don't necessarily blame gamers from focusing on the game aspect of this purchase, but its massively underselling that Sony is a multimedia entertainment company with plans outside of video games and Kadokawa's holding on other forms of media. For just a taste, here is just what Wikipedia lists as some of the subsidiaries of the Kadokawa Corporation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, numerous light novel and manga magazine publishers, anime studios, and even news sites like Anime News Network fall under the umbrella of Kadokawa owned operations. And Sony themselves have been no slouches in the anime industry either. Having bought Aniplex, Funimation, Crunchyroll, RightStuff and more Sony has had a foothold on the distribution of anime outside Japan for quite a while. If this acquisition goes through there is no doubt that this will make their grip even tighter on the anime industry. Basically now controlling all the means of taking a work from the page to the screen to overseas to the merch to follow.
Obviously, I don't necessarily blame video game journalists and personalities for not going this deep into it, video games and anime fans may have overlap, but it's pretty clear there's a level of separation between the two in the same space. However, this focus on FromSoft honestly reminds me of the Microsoft-Bethesda purchase where most people talked about it like Microsoft only bought Bethesda. No, they bought Bethesda's parent company, Zenimax Media, which owns Bethesda and also numerous other studios like Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Obsidian, Roundhouse Studios, and Alpha Dog Games. Note that all those studios except Obsidian saw a closer this year. When dealing with a massive merger/acquisition like this its important to keep in mind the full scope of it.
Kadokawa and its video game sector which includes FromSoft, Spike Chunsoft and recent acquisition of Acquire being purchased by Sony would be pretty rough. Particularly Spike who have made a reputation for themselves as one of the still AA studios that are into developing and publishing niche games like Ai The Somnium Files, Master Detective Raincode, and Mystery Dungeon. So having Sony, who have spent basically the last decade and a half moving towards huge blockbuster AAA games and who have just incurred a massive loss and shuttered a studio like Firewalk after one disastrous game, makes me fear for a lot of the safety of any new company being brought on.
And of course, there's the very real possibility that one acquired Sony will make many of these games these studios make exclusive to their Playstation platform. Or at the very least require a PSN account to access these titles on things like the PC. I know there's a lot of people who like to turn stories of Sony and Microsoft acquiring companies into pissing matches for whoever's team is "winning" by buying up more, but setting aside the console wars nonsense, the adverse effects of the major third party publishers on the industry would be bad for all platform users.
However, even more worrisome is what will happen on the print entertainment side of things. Kadokawa isn't a small time publisher of works. When it comes to their Light Novel prints they include series like Sword Art Online, Haruhi Suzumiya, Irregular at Magic High School, Classroom of the Elite, Re:Zero, No Game No Life, and even Slayers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also Enterbrain, a much smaller publisher known for its cult fanbase and publishing of niche series like Delicious in Dungeon!
Tumblr media
Now, all of these series in Japan are typically protected by much stronger creators rights laws in Japan. With the series creators owning their work and not the publishers. But it doesn't change that now Sony will essentially have ownership of their publishing outlets and a seat at everyone of their production committees I regards to adaptations of their work. And then we get into how those products might leave Japan. Yen Press and Book Walker aren't small outlets, they are a big deal in making several of these series legally accessible to non-Japanese readers. Yen Press has even taken it upon themselves to bring over series from other magazines like Oshi no Ko, which Viz Media had failed to bring over for years.
And speaking of Oshi no Ko, this acquisition would mean Sony would now own the studio that makes it, Doga Kobo. Along with Cinema Citrus, the studio behind Made in Abyss, Rise of the Shield Hero, and as I was writing this, just was announced for Star Wars Visions Vol 3. Now lets add onto the fact Sony currently owns Crunchyroll which is one of the three main players in the North American anime streaming and distribution game along with Netflix and Hi-Dive. Sony could in theory now cut out the need to bid for airing certain anime overseas and instead just have a pipeline that leads directly from Kinema Citrus all the way to Crunchyroll's servers.
And speaking of Crunchyroll, we haven't even talked about how Sony has been acting in regards to this one streaming platform. Initially, Sony had acquired Funimation and infamously we had a neck and neck streaming war with Crunchy and Funi, but eventually Crunchyroll would be sold off to Sony where they proceeded to fold Funimation into Crunchyroll's brand. Erasing years of Funimation's own identity and most egregious of all, shuttering the Funimation website which deleted loads of digital content. Especially annoying when one of the perks of purchasing a Funimation Blu-Ray was offering a free digital copy that could be used on their website. So all those purchases? Gone. Hope you saved the physical media.
Crunchyroll themselves have also been no shortage of controversies lately, from the implementations of AI subtitles that are not only inaccurate, but also a pretty transparent attempt to eventually phase out subtitle writers. Then there's the allegations by actors as recently as a few weeks ago that Crunchyroll Studios has acted unprofessionally and illegally with their treatment of staff. But I think the most controversial of all was what happened to RightStuf. RIghtStuf was an anime merchandise outlet that would be shut down after purchase by Sony and then redirected users to go to the Crunchyroll merch store. If that doesn't sound like an attempt to monopolize a hobby, I don't what does.
Tumblr media
I know this post has been very alarmist sounding, I legit was shaken when I heard the news, but there is some small silver lining to this dark cloud. Kadokawa hasn't made any decision either which way to go with this intention to acquire. They are capable of doing they're due diligence and seeing if this acquisition is opportune for them or not. Do I think they are going to reject it? I don't know. I'd prefer to not have this go through, but its out of my hands.
Once again, we must unfortunately watch more consolidation in the animanga and video game spaces. Which in the year 2024, we've seen full display of what has happened with the shrinking AA space of developers and publishers as they've been eaten up by guys like Tencent, Embracer Group, Microsoft, and Sony. We've had so many lay-offs and shut downs in this year alone its disheartening. Combine that with how this will effect how many people outside of Japan's accessibility to the pass time that they are passionate about and how this will inch us closer to only a few big players making all the choices for the anime industry is also disheartening.
There's a very tangible future where corporations like Sony own so much of our art and entertainment.

we find ourselves in the thralls of a winding, boundless network here. within the core of it, there is a central mainframe. the code stretches out, streaks of green light across all space, casting shadows resembling sprawling trees. intertwined in the absolutely baffling circuitry of it all is a verdant core.

i welcome you all to the verdant mainframe, aka my writeblr. my name is verde (they/them), and, well, there's no right way to say this, i suppose... but i am in the centre of a strange, henceforth unknowable, digital landscape. from the inside, it looks almost like a forest. but i take it from the outside it just looks like numbers, doesn't it? in so many words, i am a little... trapped here. don't worry, i'm working on it. but oh boy, do i have a story or two to tell while i'm here, unscrambling this network.

a little about me, i've been writing for most of my life, and decided to jump the gun and make a writeblr account for this project of mine. and i do mean jumping the gun - the project is so new it hardly has a name! tentatively called "the verdant project" (because we love a connected motif in this house), i'm aiming to make a multimedia story, containing everything from letters, video and audio transcripts, message threads, and more. the aim of the verdant project is to tell a story with all the means available to me. stories are everywhere, in so many forms, so i want the verdant project to explore that! the smaller details are currently unknown to me, 'course, but i wanted to get my foot in the door early (assuming the door is an endless line of code i am trying to escape from. fun metaphors and the like).
𝕥𝕒𝕘𝕤, 𝕟𝕠𝕥𝕚𝕗𝕤, 𝕖𝕟𝕘𝕒𝕘𝕖𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕥, 𝕖𝕥𝕔
any and all engagement is appreciated greatly - from likes, reblogs, comments, etc, i love to see it all, i'd be beyond flattered to be seen in that way. i also have an open door policy for tagging. i'm not too big on holding my own tag lists or anything, but if you've got a project you wanna talk about, tag me, message me, chuck an ask my way, anything! i love hearing about other creative's stories, and if you want a listening ear for your projects, i'm always available. tag games, asks, and all that fun stuff, would be greatly appreciated too (though it may take a while due to my uh,, unpreparedness with everything)!
𝕔𝕠𝕟𝕔𝕝𝕦𝕤𝕚𝕠𝕟 ↺
i think that all about wraps up what i wanted to say. hopefully i'll have more content about the verdant project soon, i'm stoked to get it started! in the meantime, i'm happy to be here, idly observing behind the mainframe. thanks for coming around! back to cyberspace for me,, ᶻ 𝗓 𐰁

Effective note-taking while learning an online course
Taking effective notes is more than just jotting down what you hear in a lecture or read in a book: it's a strategic process that enhances your understanding and retention. Whether you're a student, professional, or lifelong learner, mastering the art of note-taking can elevate your ability to learn and apply new concepts.
Understand how you think to adapt your note-taking style
Verbal thinkers:
Process information through words and language.
Excel with text-heavy, sequential note-taking styles.
Visual thinkers:
Object visualizers: Think in detailed images, excel in hands-on fields like art or engineering.
Spatial visualizers: Think in patterns and abstractions, thrive in areas like physics or architecture.
Mixed thinkers:
Combine both styles to adapt based on the situation.
1) Understand the purpose of notes
Before diving into techniques, it's essential to know why you take notes. Effective notes serve three main purposes:
Capture key ideas: Focus on main concepts, not every word.
Aid recall: Notes should act as memory triggers.
Support active learning: Writing notes forces your brain to process information.
2) Prepare before the course
Preview material: Skim the syllabus, course outline or key readings to anticipate important themes.
Gather supplies: Notebook, pens, digital tools (laptops, apps like Google doc, Notion, OneNote, or Evernote).
Verbal thinkers: Use lined notebooks or text-based apps like Word or Google Docs.
Visual thinkers: Use blank notebooks, mind-mapping tools or apps like Milanote.
Mixed thinkers: Use a combination of both formats to capture ideas flexibly.
Set goals: Know what you want to achieve from the course.
3) Choose a note-taking method
a) Linear notes (basic listing)
Write down points in sequential order.
Best for: Simple lectures or storytelling. Best used by: Mixed thinkers
b) Cornell Method
Divide your page into:
Main section: Notes during the lecture.
Cue section: Keywords/questions later.
Summary section: Key takeaways at the bottom.
Best for: Structured review. Best used by: Verbal thinkers
c) Mind maps
Create a visual map with the main topic in the center and branches for subtopics.
Best for: Complex concepts or brainstorming. Best used by: Visual thinkers
d) Outline method
Use bullet points with indentation for hierarchy.
Main Topic
Subtopic
Details
Best for: Well-structured content. Best used by: Verbal thinkers
e) Flow notes
Combine visuals, arrows and text to show connections.
Best for: Dynamic, fast-paced lectures. Best used by: Visual thinkers
4) During the lecture
Listen actively:
Focus on understanding, not transcribing verbatim.
Identify cues:
Look for emphasis (repeated ideas, instructor tone, slides).
Use abbreviations:
Shorten common words (e.g., “w/” for with, “b/c” for because).
Organize on the fly:
Use headings, subheadings and bullet points to keep things structured.
Verbal thinkers: Group ideas under headings or bullet points.
Visual thinkers: Sketch concepts or relationships between topics.
5) After the lecture
Review notes:
Fill in gaps, clarify confusing points and ensure everything makes sense.
Summarize:
Write a brief overview of what you learned.
For verbal thinkers:
Write summaries in your own words to reinforce understanding.
Use mnemonics or word-based memory aids for recall.
For visual thinkers:
Recreate diagrams or visual models from memory.
Annotate your notes with additional visuals to deepen understanding.
For mixed thinkers:
Pair visual summaries (like flowcharts) with verbal descriptions.
Practice explaining concepts both visually and verbally.
Test yourself:
Turn your notes into questions and quiz yourself for better retention.
6) Use digital tools for efficiency
Google docs/Word: Collaborative and easily accessible.
Notion/OneNote: Organize notes by topic with multimedia support.
Audio recorders: Complement notes for revisiting missed points.
7) Tips for retention
Revisit regularly: Spaced repetition improves memory (Ankis cards).
Condense notes: Create cheat sheets for quick revision.
Teach someone else: Explaining the material reinforces your understanding.
Review often: Reinforce your learning by revisiting and reorganizing your notes.
8) Stay organized
Label notes: Course name, date, topic.
Keep sections clear: Separate topics/modules with dividers or digital tags.
Backup notes: Use cloud storage for digital notes.
9) Adapt your style
Not every method works for everyone. Experiment with different approaches to find what resonates with your learning style. You may prefer digital tools, visual techniques like mind maps or traditional handwritten notes.
Tumblr media
Bonus : Make note-taking fun!
Learning doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Add creativity to your process:
Gamify learning:
Create quizzes with tools like Kahoot or Quizlet.
Challenge yourself with timed note summaries.
Go visual:
Use colorful infographics or mind maps to highlight connections.
Turn complex ideas into visual stories.
Role-play and scenarios:
Pretend to be an expert and explain your notes to an imaginary audience.
Apply concepts to real-life situations to deepen your understanding.
Mix it up:
Use flashcards for quick reviews.
Watch videos or listen to podcasts on your topic to reinforce learning.
Collaborate:
Discuss your notes with peers or teach someone else for better retention.
Establish a routine:
Dedicate 20–30 minutes daily to review notes.
End each session with a mini-quiz or creative recap.
Tumblr media
Bonus : Mastering layout and formatting for effective Notes
A) General layout principles
Start with a clean slate
Use consistent margins for a neat look.
Leave ample white space between sections to avoid visual clutter.
Margins create a visual boundary that organizes content, helping your brain process the information in chunks.
Leave at least one blank line (or 1.5 spacing in digital notes) between different topics or ideas.
They provide room to add comments, symbols or questions during reviews without cluttering the main content.
Number your pages to keep notes in order.
Add descriptive titles for easy navigation.
Include date, course title or lecture topic in the header.
Prioritize legibility
Choose readable fonts if typing (e.g., Arial, Calibri).
Write neatly if using pen and paper.
Use headings and subheadings
Bold or underline main headings.
Use numbered or bullet-point subheadings for organization.
Color coding for clarity
Assign colors to categories (e.g., red for key terms, blue for examples).
Avoid overusing colors: stick to 2–3 for consistency.
Use bold or underlined text for essential ideas.
Highlight terms, dates or definitions for easy scanning.
Handwritten: Invest in multi-colored pens or highlighters for emphasis
Digital: Use formatting tools like bold, italics, and bullet lists.
Visual coding for enhancing the important part
Add icons, images or colors to make connections intuitive.
Insert tables, diagrams, or charts to organize data visually

Extra Info/Questions
I thought it would be useful to make a post like this for any wonderings people might have (Let me know if there’s a question not covered here and I’ll answer it for you!)
What is whump?
“Whump” is when a fictional character experiences pain. This can be physical or psychological. As long as a character is in pain or discomfort to some degree, that counts as whump.
Whump as a genre is also heavily related to angst, hurt/comfort, and dark fiction. It is also associated with the Dead Dove: Do Not Eat tag.
Introduction to whump
Fanlore page on whump
Does my less intense creation/comfort-centric creation count for this event?
Yes! Even “less intense” things that aren’t outright torture and creations centered around comfort are very much welcome here.
Do I have to create whump?
You can make whatever you want! This is a whump-centered event, so whump is expected, but it’s okay if you make something else.
Are all types of media/creation really allowed?
Yes! You can draw, paint, animate, write, record video, take photos, make gifs, create something abstract, sew, craft, anything you can think of! This is a multimedia event and as such, all types of creation are welcome here.
EXCEPT AI generation. I am well aware there’s no way of stopping people from using AI, but I believe that it’s unfair and just generally un-fun to have an algorithm make something for you for an event like this. It ruins the point of it, you know?
How do I use the prompts?
The prompts are well - prompts to inspire you! Ideally, your work should reflect the inspiration or idea of the prompt, but again, it’s okay to get abstract with it!
You don’t have to write a prompt happening in the current moment either. It could be before or after the prompt actually happens.
For example, the prompt “whipping” could be about a whumper preparing to whip a whumpee, with no whipping shown in the creation itself. It could also be the aftermath of whipping.
You can get as creative as you want with the prompts. You can even get metaphorical with them - such as with the prompt “filth” - you could make something about someone feeling morally “filthy.”
And so on so forth! The prompts are mine to give you, but yours to play and experiment with.
What are “alt prompts”? How do I use them?
Alt prompts are there in case all the prompts for a certain day just aren’t working out for you and you need to go and get a different one. It’s like a fun little chest of extra ideas you can go to if something isn’t working out!
To use an alt prompt, just say what day you’re using it for and use it like a normal prompt.
Do I have to use all the prompts?/Do I have to use all three prompts for each day?
No! You can use as many or as few as you want.
Do I have to post the days in order?
If you don’t want to, then no.
Can I combine multiple prompts for each day or combine different days into one creation?
Of course! The three prompts for each day are there for you to pick and choose or mix and match and you can combine whatever days you want.
Can I use these prompts with prompts from another event?
Of course! Combine as many other events as you like with your prompt fills.
What do I do for day 31, actually?
Whatever you want. I’m dead serious. Make whatever calls to you. It’s a little treat for you guys and a clever way of me dealing with accidentally thinking August has 30 days and not checking until after I posted the prompts.
Are there awards for participating/completion? How do I earn them? Will you be verifying this?
Yes! There are badges for participants and completionists.
If you’ve done at least one day/prompt for this challenge? Congratulations! You’re a participant!
If you’ve done a prompt for every day (this includes prompts from different days combined into one creation and includes alt. prompts)? Congratulations! You’re a completionist!
When the month is over, you can get a shiny little badge to put wherever you want saying you participated!
A list of participants and completionists will be posted after the event along with a picture of a badge that u can stick on your profile or wherever you want :)
(EDIT: I know I still haven’t made the badges for 2024 yet I’m sorry 😭 I’ve just been swamped… with business. Also I forgot)
To get on the list, all you have to do is just send an ask saying if you’re a participant/completionist and boom. I’ll put you on the list, simple as that.
I didn’t finish on time, do I still count? / I started after the event occurred, what about me?
Sure you do! Sometimes life gets in the way of things or you didn’t discover these prompts until way after the event. It’s okay! You can absolutely snatch up a badge for yourself.
Again, if I forgot to mention something you’re curious about, let me know! I don’t bite and there are no stupid questions here

Prince's 750 Twitch Follower Celebration Streams
Tumblr media
That's right 'streams' plural! I'm sorry this is such sort notice, I've been unable to plan it it advance due to mental health reasons and basically if I schedule these streams for a week away or two weeks away I may not feel able to stream or sing on that day once it comes around. But I'm feeling surprisingly good today and really have to urge to get these streams done. (Also karaoke makes me so nervous every time, I can never get used to singing in front of others so let's get this out of the way while I'm temporarily not too scared).
So tomorrow (Wednesday 7th of August) I'll be doing karaoke on stream. Anyone in chat gets to pick songs from my pre-approved list (here: https://www.streamersonglist.com/t/dervampireprince/songs) for me to sing. And we'll also have a Magma canvas open in the background for us all to draw in together.
And on Thursday (8th of August) I'll be reading out and sharing 17776 with you guys! I already showed it on stream on Monday and I'm happy so many seemed interested. It's a multimedia fiction story about three sentient space probes watching American football in the year 17776. I find it funny and heart-warming despite how silly the premise sounds and I read it when it first came out, eagerly awaiting each new daily chapter, and I'm excited to share it with more people. And I'll keep the Magma canvas open during this stream as well.
This isn't a subathon or donothon so there's no rewards, goals or giveaways for subscribing or donating, but of course as always any subs or donations are very appreciated.
(Reminder my Twitch is 18+, though this blog is too so hopefully the reminder isn't needed)

Thinking abt picaresques again. & Don Quixote. (No-one is surprised)
Don Quixote is often cited as an emblematic picaresque but its protagonist is not a picaro. Not a rogue or a knave or any sort of member of the underworld surviving life by his wits. He's the opposite — an hidalgo who's lost his wits. Candide sits in the same weird spot in terms of categorisation.
It does have other traits of the picaresque model, of course — the exposure of society's foibles, loopholes, & evils. A journey over land. It also helps that it's Spanish! We need an overlapping resemblances model for the picaresque like the one I made for the epic in my thesis, to wit: what traits/elements appear in MOST picaresques MOST of the time? How many of that list need to be ticked off before a story qualifies as a picaresque? Are any traits mandatory? How about the eponymous one, the presence of a picaro?
Which brings me back to my point. I saw a take online wherein someone claimed that if we ignore the etymology of "picaresque", then Don Quixote is a perfect fit. Is that the best way to go? The genre name itself only has one trait — is the genre now to contain stories that don't even contain that trait?
There's precedent for this. There are westerns not set (much less filmed) in the Wild West, for example. There are texts — literary, cinematic, multimedia — that get categorised as epic, whatever that means for each medium, without actually being epic in the etymological sense — that is, without coming from an oral folk tradition.
Maybe picaresques could benefit from the primary vs secondary epic model, where primary epics do check off all those boxes neatly of coming from an oral folk tradition & being long poems & featuring only one plot at a time & being part of a wider mythic storyworld & so on & so forth, & secondary epics are made with the epic form consciously in mind & seek to mimic that form. But I'm sure there would be pushback anyway if you went around calling Don Quixote a "secondary picaresque".
In any case, I agree with Walter Ong when he says that "concepts have a way of carrying their etymologies with them forever." I don't think epic can ever be fully divested from speech, nor do I think the picaro can ever be made irrelevant to the picaresque. They're baked into the name, so unless we came up with a new name, the paradox of holding up Don Quixote as an exemplary picaresque will stay.

i’m currently at a course about environmental humanities and part of the course is some kind of multimedia group work. now for the introductions the organizers had us list our names and research projects and whatever skills we might have that could aid the group work and as everyone else was listing off actual useful skills i realized i had nothing to offer so as the little jokester i am i went “well my number one skill is homosexual audacity and that’s gotten me this far so i’m very optimistic” and nothing can describe the high of having 50 people in a room laugh heartily at your joke. true jester moments

Materials List
Art classes can be very expensive in terms of materials, so this modified tumblr course has a smaller materials list than most art classes will. If you can't afford the materials listed here, most of the projects can be modified to be completed with a simple pencil and notebook paper and an inexpensive set of crayons, and I will include instructions for the "proper" tools as well as modified instructions for less expensive tools for the assignments as needed. Links go to Dick Blick for demonstration purposes, but none of this has to be from Dick Blick or from the brands listed in the links.
Marking Tools
A set of drawing pencils in different hardnesses
Charcoal in assorted hardnesses
Waterproof ink and a brush
A Fine tip pen
Sketching pastels (optional; you can replace these with a set of crayola crayons for this drawing course)
Paper
A hardcover sketchbook
A multimedia pad (a large one is better than a small one for learning but this pad doesn't have to be huge, you can get a small multimedia pad)
A newsprint pad (this one should be the largest one you can get)
Toned paper (brown or gray paper, you can get individual sheets or a sketchbook, or you can just use construction paper if you want to)
Erasers
A kneaded eraser
A plastic eraser (any brand is fine i'm just linking tombow specifically because i love them and you can get tombow mono erasers in three packs at daiso if there's a daiso near you)
Modified Tools (Because sometimes people want to learn to draw and don't want to drop a hundred bucks on tools)
Required:
Pencil - a number two pencil is fine
Paper - printer paper is fine, though if it's thicker that's good
Optional:
Multimedia drawing pad
Construction paper
Eraser (kneaded is ideal, but any will work)
Set of 16 Crayons (crayola or other brand; you mainly want this for white, black, and brown crayons and to use other colors in place of soft charcoal for some projects)
