No one warns you how much body heat you lose when you are down part of your limb. Hell no one warned him that he would be more likely to heat stroke or freeze than any illness could do to him. Still his lips had long turned blue, and he assumed similar for his fingers and stump under the thick layer of fur he had donned before leaving.

Hinatsuru was always there for him, always concerned with what he was going through, especially after that night where he had nearly lost it all. Still her warmth against his side, emanating through the several layers of clothes was enough to slow the chattering of perfect teeth even just a little bit.

“Shit… I swear the walk gets – longer every year.”

tbh the only thing holding me back from getting obsessed with demon slayer again is the fact that i haven't watched anything after the entertainment district arc. do you know how easily i'd fall right back into dissecting the characters and writing my whole roster of dorks?? too easily...

He does not know why he was here. Something about the turbulent weather and the absolute bloodshed of the night, the knowledge of Genya being here when he'd tried to keep him so far away from this world has left Sanemi in something of a daze, mind burdened with the past and the present and the future all at once. He is too tired to summon anger, his body aching with each cut he has made to incense the demons, to draw them closer with that marechi blood that drugs them into senselessness.

He had not realised his steps had a destination until he had ended up dripping on Tengen's doorstep, a sorry sight of a man.

The words do not seem to register immediately, the wind hashira blinking the daze from his eyes before he focuses on the other and nods slowly.

"I..." should go. don't know what I'm doing here. There are thoughts that do not slip from his lips and instead he nods mechanically and continues to stare, lifting a hand to wipe away at a blood stain on his cheek, only succeeding in smearing a rose coloured stain across his skin.

"Just until the rain stops." His voice is hoarse, words less coarse than usual, but spoken with the same insistence. He won't be anyone's burden, he just needs a space to collect himself before he goes back. The battle has worn him down too much this time and Tengen at least gives the impression he can be trusted.

"I'll leave at dawn."

     so i mentioned before that tengen gives me the vibe of someone who thinks they’re the best and worst at the same time, depending on when you catch them, and here’s why!! uhh warning: this one’s a doozy of a headcanon, meaning it’s long as hell :’ ) 

personal blogs, do not interact!

     first of all, thank you ufotable for giving us extra scenes that let us see more of tengen and his wives bc that contributed to this headcanon <3 deviations that anime tend to take aren’t always for the better, but in this case, i’m really happy with the changes they made bc i feel like we can get a better look at tengen’s mindset/motivations. but let me not get ahead of myself here!!

     i know that tengen’s intro is him proclaiming himself a god, and generally he gives off the impression that he thinks highly of himself. when gyutaro asks, “ you’re their savior, aren’t you? ...their affection and gratitude toward you know no bounds, huh? ” he even eggs the upper moon on by saying, “ i’m a flashy, glamorous ladies’ man, so that’s a no-brainer. and i even have three wives no less. ” he is trying to provoke gyutaro, but tengen is well aware that he’s someone who naturally gains admiration and envy bc he’s tall, handsome, strong, and yeah -- he’s got three wives!

     so i don’t think tengen generally struggles with confidence or self esteem, but he does struggle with guilt. during that fight with gyutaro when he’s saying that tengen must’ve been special the day he was born, a chosen talent, tengen all but laughs in his face and denies that he has any talent -- it’s a load of crap when just how many lives have slipped through his fingers?? too many. he isn’t like kyojuro who protected an entire train of people and didn’t allow a single person to die, even if it was at the cost of his own life. 

     and the thing is, tengen is crazy strong and obviously does have talent since he has incredibly good hearing, but based on his background and opinion, he likely didn’t have a natural talent with combat. the training his father put him through molded him into the warrior he is, made him capable of becoming a pillar. he wasn’t like muichiro or even kyojuro who taught himself flame breathing. tengen wasn’t born extraordinary. he was made extraordinary through blood and sweat and tears and loss.

     but his lack of natural talent is nothing to be ashamed of! it’s the fact that he’s let so many people die and likely killed people as well. it’s the fact that his wives nearly died because of him. it’s the fact that his siblings are dead while he’s still alive. 

     in the anime, we get an extra scene between tengen and his wives in which they go to the uzui family grave to visit his brothers. there’s a moment where tengen slips and says, “ i’m going to hell,” and then proceeds to brush it off lightheartedly bc he doesn’t want another “ tongue-lashing ” from his wives. but he then thinks to himself, “ i’m going to live the flashiest life possible for my siblings’ sake. ” 

     first!!! the fact that he specifically says he doesn’t need another tongue-lashing from his wives implies he’s said this kind of thing before, and i love that little detail bc that means hina, suma, and makio are all three aware of tengen’s struggle and wholeheartedly believe he shouldn’t feel guilty. and the fact that they think he shouldn’t feel guilty plus the fact that he wants to live a “ flashy ” life for his siblings’ sake means that he 100% feels responsible for his siblings’ deaths. in the second official fanbook, we find out that tengen’s father tricked him and his siblings into fighting each other to the death by masking them, and as a result, tengen killed two of his brothers. it’s no wonder that he believes he’s going to hell despite having been tricked.

     i do wonder if it also has to do with his own feelings towards the shinobi way of life. they were expected to risk their lives for the mission, but that isn’t what tengen wanted from the start, i’m sure. how could he when he lost some of his siblings before they were even ten years old? or when he saw how his father treated his family? how could he when he married hina, makio, and suma, and suddenly had people who he felt responsible for, who he wanted to protect? he didn’t want to die for something like duty to a lifestyle he hated -- he wanted to live. he wanted to live beside his family, beside his wives, and he wanted them to live, too. and i wonder if that didn’t lead to deaths he could’ve prevented. you hesitate when you’re afraid of dying, after all.

     plus!! tengen says, “ those who have baggage like conflict or quandaries are spineless fools. that’s always been the story of my life, ” so his desire to survive has been a struggle for him even while he was a shinobi. but then oyakata-sama tells him thank you for fighting despite those conflicts and quandaries and validates that desire. it isn’t something to be ashamed of, and he doesn’t have to fight with the intention of laying down his life if need be. i’m sure he thought oyakata-sama would expect that of him, which is why he looks absolutely surprised by his response.

     HOWEVER, that doesn’t negate the guilt tengen feels for the people he’s lost as a result of his “ quandaries. ” he’s grown, and now he doesn’t hesitate bc he fights with the intention of winning so long as it isn’t at the expense of his or his wives’ lives. he’s got better judgement bc he has clear intentions without the weight of another’s expectations on him. but he’ll never forget his siblings and the others he’s lost because he wasn’t willing to die for them.

Tengen lets loose a chuckle as he finally arrives at their sparring spot – it’s not like he was intentionally late. It simply took more time than he expected to catch up with his wives. They were fretting and suh and as a good husband, of course he’s going to assuage their worries.Not that he tells Sanemi that, but he does sit one of his blades on his shoulder, a grin easing across his features. ❝ ━ If I’m ever late for my own funeral, it’s because death doesn’t want to deal with me any longer.❞

Hearty laughter escapes him, shifting his stance just as Sanemi charges at him, the clink of blades meeting and oh the adrenaline that thrums through his blood has his heart pumping wildly. ❝ ━ I’d expect you there, y’know. Not crying over my grave, but celebrating my life, cussing me for leaving too early when we still have work to do.  ❞ This life is not one for the weak, and they will lose things, limbs, their life, one another but Tengen would live as he pleased with no regrets. Knocking Sanemi back a few feet, his eyes narrow, pointing his blade at the other, ❝ ━ Don’t die before me, Sanemi. I expect great things from you. ❞

A  sigh  left  his  lips  momentarily  as  he  heard  the  other  come  up  behind  him.  Here,  he  thought  he  was  going  to  be  able  to  be  alone  for  once.  no  one  falling  him,  it  just  being  quiet  ---  and  yet,  there  was  always  a  confidant  when  the  other  loud  one  was  around.  Titling  his  head  back,  he  smiled  a  little,  nodding.

"  I'm  fine,  I  just  need  a  moment  to  breathe."

He  stated,  moving  to  pat  the  edge  next  to  him.  Wanting  the  other  to  join  him  anyway,  he  didn't  care.  As  long  as  it  wasn't  the  wives  following  around  him  right  now,  he  would  have  that  moment  to  himself.

"  You  know  how  some  things  can  be,  when  you  have  everything  drop  on  your  shoulders  and  all  you  need  is  the  moment  to  breathe,  besides  the  weather's  nice  tonight  and  there  are  no  clouds.  So,  looking  up  at  the  stars  is  relaxing."

Given  his  personality.  It  was  different  to  know  he  could  relax  and  show  it  to  someone.  Rengoku  was  one  of  the  only  people  who  got  to  see  this  side  of  him  after  all.

After watching a Gurren Lagann video, I realized that "Disconnected" fits the aftermath of Kamina's death near perfectly.

okay but i can't tell you how much i still love my annoying lil sister oc who bothers all the older slayers the minute they walk into the room bc " OOOOH pls tell me about your training regimen!! show me your strongest move!! spar with me please please please-- "

but in the next moment, she endears herself to others bc her peers and those younger than her?? she's so damn supportive!! won't let them talk bad about themselves or leave them to fend for themselves!! she's cheering them on and helping in anyway she can, hyping them up, and when i tell you she'd die for someone she's known for all of five minutes :' ))) i'm not even exaggerating :' )))

hyouka is absolutely excitable and too enthusiastic at times and doesn't always catch social cues when she should, but for all her faults, she's still a good friend and a dependable comrade. she's still someone you can always turn to when times are rough, and without a second thought, she's coming to your aid. and i just love her to bits <3

tengen realizing his father was pitting his siblings against one another is always going to be something he carries heavy in his heart. yes, it's why he left his clan with his wives, i really think even though he loved his father and his brother ( thus not exterminating them ) because he cared for them, had he known from the beginning, he wouldn't have gone to those battles. that overzealousness of the training, which resulted in the death of his siblings tends to bleed into the way he trains people. he doesn't want to kill them, but he is harsh, because he doesn't want to see them weak in the face of someone stronger.
