Building Global Citizens: Community Outreach Initiatives at FLAG
Fostering a sense of purpose beyond textbooks, Fazlani L’Académie Globale has long been recognized among the Best International Schools in South Mumbai for its holistic approach to education. Founded in 2007, this Mazagaon‑based institution offers a richly integrated curriculum, encompassing both the International Baccalaureate and Cambridge IGCSE programs that empower students to become compassionate, curious, and committed global citizens.
At the heart of Fazlani L’Académie Globale’s ethos is the belief that learning must transcend the classroom. As one of the premier Cambridge International Schools in Mumbai, FLAG weaves Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) projects directly into its timetable, ensuring every student has the chance to apply academic skills to real‑world challenges.
From the moment they step on campus, learners engage with local NGOs, participate in Model United Nations simulations, and organize peer‑to‑peer workshops, experiences that sharpen critical thinking while nurturing empathy and resilience.
Community Outreach as a Cornerstone
Recognizing that leadership and service go hand in hand, FLAG’s Community and Service programme invites students to partner with established organisations. In one flagship initiative, the “Just Be Kind Club” (JBK) collaborates with local care homes, orphanages, and environmental groups, sensitising young learners to the needs of Mumbai’s most vulnerable citizens. Since its inception, JBK has hosted intergenerational exchanges, arts‑and‑crafts sessions for senior citizens, and beach‑clean drives. Each activity embedding a sense of social responsibility in participants.
Parallel to JBK, FLAG’s SDG Day events mobilise students around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Through workshops, poster‑making, and street‑theatre performances, learners explore issues such as climate action, gender equality, and quality education. In a recent SDG Day, teams created multimedia installations that travelled to neighbouring schools, sparking dialogues on waste segregation and energy conservation across Mumbai neighbourhoods.
Creativity, Action & Service (CAS) in Practice
Under the CAS banner, Fazlani L’Académie Globale students meet community needs while honing leadership skills. A memorable collaboration with HelpAge India involved welcoming 40 senior citizens onto campus for a Diwali celebration, complete with music, games, and specially prepared meals. Students planned every detail, from décor to dietary accommodations, demonstrating logistical acumen and genuine compassion. Such events not only enliven cultural traditions but leave lasting impressions: participants often credit these interactions with bridging generational gaps and promoting mutual respect.
Beyond festivals, CAS camps transport students into rural and urban settings for service‑learning projects. Whether building rainwater‑harvesting systems in Maharashtra villages or conducting literacy drives in under‑resourced Mumbai schools, learners immerse themselves in contexts far removed from their privileged urban lives. These experiences cultivate adaptability, teamwork, and an ethical appreciation of global inequalities, qualities indispensable to twenty‑first‑century leadership.
Engaging Parents and the Wider Community
True to its philosophy that education flourishes through collaboration, FLAG actively involves parents as co‑educators. Through homeroom volunteer opportunities and guest‑speaker slots, parents share industry insights, mentor passion projects, and support school‑run outreach programmes.
Regular seminars on child development and effective parenting strategies provide forums for caregivers to strengthen home‑school partnerships. This open‑dialogue model ensures that students receive consistent guidance and that community needs continually inform FLAG’s programme design.
Furthermore, the school’s alumni network plays an instrumental role in sustaining outreach momentum. Recent reunions and networking events have generated mentorship circles, scholarship funds, and pro‑bono professional workshops, extending FLAG’s reach into higher education and the global workforce.
Such sustained engagement underscores why many consider Fazlani L’Académie Globale among the Best International Schools in South Mumbai, not merely for its academic rigour but for its life‑forming ecosystem.
A Model for Cambridge International Schools in Mumbai
As a leading member of the Cambridge International Schools In Mumbai community, FLAG exemplifies how world‑class curricula can be enriched through local partnerships. Its commitment to enquiry‑based learning dovetails with CAS, offering students a scaffolded journey from conceptual understanding to community impact. This integrated model has earned FLAG numerous accolades, most recently being ranked first in India, Maharashtra, and Mumbai by Education World's 2024‑25 Education World Awards.
Looking ahead, Fazlani L’Académie Globale continues to explore innovative outreach avenues. Plans include digital literacy campaigns in collaboration with tech nonprofits, mental‑health awareness drives co‑designed with healthcare partners, and cross‑cultural exchanges with FLAG’s sister schools abroad. Through each initiative, the school reaffirms its mission: to nurture responsible, empathetic leaders equipped to navigate—and improve—a complex, interconnected world.
By embedding community engagement into every level of school life, Fazlani L’Académie Globale not only teaches students about global citizenship but empowers them to practice it daily. Its dynamic blend of academic excellence and service-learning positions FLAG at the forefront of Best International Schools in South Mumbai, while its deep partnership with Cambridge curricula cements its reputation among Cambridge International Schools in Mumbai.
In doing so, FLAG sets a powerful example: when education transcends the classroom, students become architects of positive change in their communities and beyond.

Aarohi 2025: A Celebration of Young Voices and Timeless Traditions
Tumblr media
Concept and Curated by Pancham Nishad | Presented by GRACE Foundation
Mumbai | May 2025 – This summer, the city’s classical music landscape will resonate with fresh promise and extraordinary potential as Aarohi – A Festival of Rising Stars returns for its 23rd edition. Presented by GRACE Foundation and curated by Pancham Nishad, this much-anticipated annual event will take place on Thursday, May 22 and Friday, May 23, 2025, from 6:30 PM onwards at Y. B. Chavan Auditorium, Nariman Point.
Carrying forward a two-decade legacy of nurturing excellence, Aarohi 2025 brings with it a bold new format — for the first time in its history, the festival will present an all-vocal concert series over two evenings. This evolution marks a heartfelt tribute to the depth and diversity of Indian vocal classical traditions, creating a listening experience both immersive and intimate.
Since its inception in 2002, Aarohi has been a launchpad for over 130 young artistes, many of whom have risen to national and global recognition — among them Niladri Kumar, Jayateerth Mevundi, Ojas Adhiya, Amaan Ali Bangash, and Rahul Deshpande to name a few. With each passing year, Aarohi continues to uphold its founding mission: to spotlight the finest emerging talent from across India and usher them into the classical music world.
"This year’s edition features six outstanding young vocalists, selected through the Gunijaan Bandish Rashtriya Pratiyogita — a prestigious national classical singing competition organised by the GRACE Foundation in 2024 to mark the birth centenary of the legendary Padma Bhushan Pt. C. R. Vyas. The competition celebrated the rich heritage of classical bandish and provided a vital platform for emerging vocal talent from across India."
The semi-finals and finals were held in Pune, culminating in the selection of these promising young voices by an esteemed jury of the country’s most respected maestros: Vidushi Nirmala Gogate, Pandit Sajan Mishra, Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, Pandit Satish Vyas, Vidushi Ashwini Bhide, Pandit Suhas Vyas, Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, and Vidushi Devaki Pandit.
Performance Line-up: Thursday, May 22, 2025 • Atharva Vairagkar • Somdatta Chatterjee • Meher Paralikar
Friday, May 23, 2025 • Yugandhara Keche • Darshan Melavanki • Tejaswini Vernekar
These young vocalists will be accompanied by a stellar team of accompanists — Yati Bhagwat, Swapnil Bhise on Tabla, Sudhanshu Gharpure, and Dyaneshwar Sonawane on the Harmonium ensuring each performance is steeped in tradition and artistic depth.
A Thoughtful Reflection:
Reflecting on the journey, Mr. Shashi Vyas, Founder and Director of Pancham Nishad, shares: “The vitality of Indian classical music depends on empowering young musicians at the right time. Aarohi was envisioned to fulfil this need — and after more than two decades, its spirit continues to inspire and resonate. This year’s all-vocal format adds another exciting chapter to our journey.”
About GRACE Foundation:
The Gunijaan Research Art Culture & Education (GRACE) Foundation is a Section 8 non-profit company dedicated to the preservation and promotion of India's rich performing arts heritage. Inspired by the philosophy “Growing individually whilst staying together”, the Foundation champions artistic collaboration and inclusive platforms for India’s next generation of performers.

[ad_1] The Mumbai Chapter of the Alumni Association, N.C.E. Bengal and Jadavpur University, one of India’s oldest and most vibrant alumni bodies, is set to host a grand cultural event celebrating the centennial of legendary composer, poet, and visionary Salil Chowdhury. Titled Prithibir Gaadi Ta Thamao, this special tribute will bring together artists, musicians, and admirers from across Mumbai for an evening of live performances on May 10, 2025, at the Maratha Sahitya Mandir Auditorium in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, honouring Chowdhury’s enduring legacy and timeless contributions to Indian music and culture.   Participants of the Prithibir Gaari Ta Thamao Project rehearsing in Mumbai More than a stage show, this vibrant project is a journey through Salil Chowdhury’s life and legacy-told through storytelling, songs, poems, visuals, and rare video interviews with his family and associates from India and abroad. Over the past 10 weeks, more than 20 artists and musicians have been passionately preparing for this unique tribute under the banner of Jadavpur Alumni, Mumbai. While the narration will be in Bengali, the performances will feature a rich tapestry of Bengali, Hindi, and Malayalam songs, reflecting the multilingual brilliance of Chowdhury’s musical journey. Salil Chowdhury's Bengali song "Prithibir Gaadi Ta Thamao" (পৃথিবীর গাড়িটা থামাও) translates to "Stop the Train of the World" or, more poetically, "Halt the Journey of the Earth." At its core, the song is a poetic and poignant plea -an appeal to pause the relentless pace of the world and reflect on the suffering, injustice, and chaos that often go unnoticed in the rush of life. It captures Salil Chowdhury’s deep social consciousness and empathy for the marginalised and oppressed. The lyrics, filled with symbolic imagery, talk about a world moving too fast, indifferent to pain and inequality. Chowdhury believed there is an urgent need to stop, take stock, and notice the cries of the voiceless. Thus, this masterpiece critiques blind progress at the cost of humanity and compassion. Salil Chowdhury (19 November 1925 – 5 September 1995) was renowned for blending Indian classical traditions with Western harmonies and folk elements. Chowdhury's work transcended linguistic and regional boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on music, cinema, and literature. Commenting on the event, Dibyendu Chakraborty, Jadavpur University Mumbai Alumni and former Alumni Association President, said, “As we mark the 100th year of Salil Chowdhury, this project is much more than a tribute. It is a heartfelt journey through the life of a visionary whose music transcended language, region, and era. It serves as a poignant reminder that his melodies, rich with emotion and meaning, still have the power to connect people across time and space, resonating as deeply today as they did decades ago.” Those interested in attending the event can register or find more details by visiting: www.juaam.com/event_detail/31. The Jadavpur University Alumni Association Mumbai branch has been organising various cultural events over the years. In March 2010, it organised Heritage of Indian Classical Music at Rabindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi, Mumbai. Featuring the performance of doyen Hindustani classical music Late Ustad Rashid Khan, the program aimed to foster connections among the general public and alumni while promoting the rich legacy of Indian classical music. Evoking the nostalgia of Jadavpur University's annual cultural events, where music once filled the air into the early hours, the evening was a heartfelt attempt to revive those cherished memories within the vibrant yet stressful pace of Mumbai life. The Mumbai Branch of the Alumni Association of N.C.E Bengal and Jadavpur University was established in 1956 to provide an umbrella for alumni to meet, interact, and socialise. In the years that followed, the objective was expanded to include knowledge sharing and charitable activities to benefit society as a whole.
More than 350 active members in the Mumbai branch are connected to various core and knowledge-based industries, professional organisations, and Government agencies.
