A little segment from Toto's High Performance podcast episode that I thought may come as some sort of comfort to anyone (like me) who's going through it (no matter how long) [source]

I didn't believe it would end sometimes, I had the support of my friende and family. Susie's been tremendous to keep the system going when I was not capable of doing it. It always ends.

You know, this is a phase of your life that can be days, weeks, months, maybe even more than a year.

But if you're open-minded about looking after yourself and speaking to somebody or seeking professional help, not go to the bar and have five beers with a mate who hasn't got an understanding of what's happening.

If you speak to someone, this is gonna pass.

But it doesn't mean you're not vulnerable for this to happen again.

I think I am, if I would have family or life situation that would be really difficult or bad, I am, I could falling into this again.

and y’know whats really crazy to think about? javon walton and aidan gallagher were like 2 years apart in age when they played stanley and five

was watching some bts clips from season 3 and stumbled upon a video of them playing pool together in full costume and it’s actually like the sweetest thing in the world because they’re literally just kids. just having a good time

and then you watch the show and it’s like “okay so one of them actually is a little kid who’s just trying to have fun and one is a stressed, angry old man who’s desperately trying to save the lives of everyone on the planet”

also i edited together a little video of it because i really wish we’d gotten even one five and stan moment and there’s a bit of a hole left in my heart from its lacking so here is that

you are most definitely not a bad person for shipping two fictional characters, even if you did ship them with the large age gap. these are fictional characters. they don’t care. they’re like barbies. you can do whatever you want with them truthfully.

people tend to forget how common age gaps are. my parents have an age gap of two years, and on a more drastic scale, my grandma and her second husband had an age gap of thirty years. in the last few years i think, there has been a significant shift of thought that even interacting with people older than you is weird. which is incredibly damaging thought process truthfully, but also carries into fandom spaces where people now see age gaps, even small ones, as disgusting and gross.

i can see why someone would be weirded out by an age gap of fifteen years, but what your friend is doing is rude. she shouldn’t police your fandom experience just because she sees something as strange. if she doesn’t understand where you’re coming from, i wouldn’t try to explain it to her. just choose to have fun in the fandom despite it.

the most important thing i can say though is that you are not dirty for liking a fictional ship in a book series, even with the age gap. i saw you only ship beetress in the pre-sotr canon and that’s fine! i totally understand that, and you should continue having fun in the fandom through that, no matter what your friend thinks.

the best thing about doing a rogue one rewatch now, is the ability to pick out every moment in the story where melshi and cassian are definitely both back on yavin having off-screen important conversations. Very magical realization. Very Thought Provoking.

Ugh yes I need to do a Rogue One rewatch (when the chaos of real life permits me) and imagine all those offscreen conversations. Planning the raid on Wobani that Melshi leads (Cassian insists he takes Kay with him). Almost certainly making fun of him for getting knocked out by Jyn and her shovel.

After Jedha and Eadu, how many more close calls, how much longer until we run out of luck. This also being the second genocide that Cassian has witnessed and escaped.

Planning the unauthorised run on Scarif - knowing this is a suicide mission - knowing that this is the end of the line. Cassian giving Melshi second in command on Scarif (even though he wasn’t the most senior officer there) because he needs someone he trusts out there.

aly if I can be honest here I’m still thinking about how your banana bread turned out because you never updated us (unless I just missed it lol) and I was too scared to ask because I was like …. what if it’s a sore spot but it has weighed heavy on my mind and I must know !!! unless it is a sore spot, then you can just delete this

oh babe... ok... it was... a massive failure

but!!!! i am now chalking that particular failed endeavor up to my loaf pan being too large and not necessarily my abilities or my recipe. because honestly it tasted AMAZING but i baked that baby low and slow and it still burned on the outside but was totally raw in the middle 😤 (i also have a gas-powered stove/oven, so things do tend to cook much faster than i'm used to — i've always had electric until i moved into my current home)

And like... all of my apple bread, pumpkin bread, zucchini bread recipes turn out great when i muffin-ify them. i'm excellent at tiny breads ig? mostly i just really wanted to accomplish the loaf for the sake of doing it?? which is DUMB. and so we're killing that dream right now! muffins only for this gal (heh)

AND you've just reminded me i have three overly ripe bananas hanging in the kitchen just waiting for a final attempt... it's 2pm and I've got shit else to do today so...

Ellie Prosthetic arm Au girlie here.

The Au as a whole is actually called Wither Rot, which is basically the Version of Wither Sickness Ellegaard gets. It’s much more deadly and results in her losing her left arm. I could probably yap about for hours but it’s pretty graphic and gross so I’m going to spare you the details.

She obviously struggles a lot at first. She has to deal with the fact that she’s needs help doing things that an able bodied person can do without help (Dressing herself, Holding doors open, operating Redstone stuff safely…. You get the point). She takes a year and a half break just to figure out how any of this works. Meanwhile Magnus is there helping and taking care of her.

Eventually, Olivia and the rest of Redstonia band together to build her a prosthetic arm powered by, you guessed it, redstone. The arm is white with gold joints.

Absolutely nobody in both Boomtown and Redstonia approves of them dating ( and eventually getting married! 🗣️💯🗣️) Not that they don’t want their leaders to date, it’s just that they don’t want them to date each other. For Magnus it’s “You can’t date this Snob!!! She’s an arrogant bitch!!1!1!” And for Ellegaard it’s “You are a brilliant, talented woman and you chose this loser!1!??1”. Both towns will find that Magnus and Ellie don’t care what they think anymore. Life’s short, get married.

That’s all I have, I think.

I feel so bad for her here - at the very least, Magnus and co are there to help her out!! But she's a determined spirit, so her perseverance was definitely rekindled during this hardship. I can just imagine Magnus having to tell her to take it easy here and there, and she has to be patient while trying to settle into this new normal (patience is a virtue, Ellie!!), but rest assured, Magnus is there to help her every step along the way. She doesn't have a choice. He's not going anywhere anytime soon.

The Redstonians and Olivia being the ones to make her the prosthetic is just ?? OHHH, I want to pin this AU on my refrigerator so I can admire it every day!! Something about that is just heartwarming to me- after all her contributions and all she's done, this is their way of repaying her by giving her the chance to *at least* feel whole again and lighten the load. Sure, it's...different, maybe a bit awkward at first, but she eventually learned to get used to it and be able to go back to her usual routine! (/≧▽≦)/

SDFEJFEG they, they got married!! WINNERS LOVE WINNING/pos!! Boomtown and Redstonia not wanting them to date each other is funny to me for some reason, but hey, love is love, gotta indulge. Life's short, get married!! Well said!!

Alexander H— and the Merlin Story

So almost anyone who has talked to me about The Night Circus has been treated to my pet theory that Alexander is Merlin, which I’ve never really explained. I’ve changed this slightly based on my latest reread, and I figured it was time to finally write it down. My theory is no longer that Alexander is Merlin. It’s that Merlin is Alexander.

So, first off: the story of Merlin in the Night Circus is usually there as a metaphor for being trapped. Widget tells the story to Poppet, and they have a conversation about whether it’s such a bad thing to be trapped somewhere (which is heartbreaking because they’re 8 at the time of this scene, but that’s another post.) It also comes up later, when (spoiler) Tsukiko intends to imprison Marco in the Bonfire.

Tsukiko doesn’t call it the Merlin story, though. She calls it the story of the Wizard in the Tree. And Kiko always, always knows more than she is saying. Now that could just be that — it could just be about entrapment and confinement. But the ground is soft and I’m here to dig.

Here are some facts about Alexander:

He doesn’t have a shadow

He doesn’t interact with the world as others do (as a child Marco never manages to be as silent as him in museums; at the party to celebrate the 13th anniversary of the Night Circus Alexander doesn’t stir up the rose petals littering the floor as everyone else does)

He is very, very old (though not immortal)

He is always grey. He’s introduced as the Grey Man, and he’s never associated with colour (aside from maybe the black cradle he sends for the twins, and the black rose at Tara’s funeral. However, when it’s just him everything associated with him is grey.)

Alexander has seen the decline of magic in the world. This is inferred, I grant, but he’s very dismissive when Widget says that there’s still some magic about, as if to him it is nothing. And although we never actually see him do much magic (he binds Celia, manipulates Tara, and teaches Marco, but that’s all I believe we see directly), his power feels present.

Following from that, very few people remember his name. Is this the manipulation Marco picked up? It could be. It could also be that he’s not fully there. Furthermore, his name isn’t really Alexander.

He is, at heart, a kind man. (This isn’t relevant to the theory, I was just surprised by how often it showed up. Anyway.)

I have always taken these things to mean he attempted what Hector did, but much more successfully. He disdains what Hector tried to do, though — he’s uninterested in immortality, and unimpressed that Hector attempted that. And so, I posit: what if Alexander did this to himself not as a choice, but because the other option was being a tree? What if the tree is his touchstone, just as Celia and Marco’s is the Circus, just as Hector doesn’t have one and is therefore diluted? A smaller area, and presumably stronger magic (assuming this is long ago when magic was more than it is today), would make him more able to interact with the world than any of the other three. This explains his lack of shadow, and his minimal interaction with the world.

It’s unclear how old Alexander is; the only real clue we get is Widget at the end saying that “if I calculated the ages of everyone I have behind this proposition, the total might trump your own age.” That doesn’t actually help that much, because we don’t know how many the Circus number, and theoretically Rêveurs could count amongst that number. So he’s very old, but human. I have just now realised that Hector is one of his first students, which means he can’t be that much younger, so what I’m about to say won’t hold up with this revelation but hey, we got here already so I’ll keep going. Trees can live a lot longer than a regular human. Trees can lose branches in the way that some parts of Alexander’s history are lost to Widget. Tree growth is non-linear, much like the circles and overlaps Widge sees in his history too.

Okay, back to things I won’t immediately poke holes in myself: Alexander lived through the downfall of magic. And what if that’s because it happened to him? I do think this makes Hector the beautiful student he told all his secrets too, which is again another post for another time, but the tale it has become doesn’t have to be the tale of how it started. Hector is, frankly, awful. He’s a horrible man. Can you see him imprisoning his teacher to get more power for himself? Easily. Now Alexander isn’t much better, but he claims he was a romantic “in his youth”, and also, when he gets the chance to be he is so often kind. He tells Celia she’s an Angel. He takes Marco out of an orphanage for his own ends, yes, but also to give Marco a better life. He does care, deeply, about Marco. He tries to save Herr Thiessen. He has many many moments of small kindnesses throughout the book. Can you not imagine him trying his best to share his knowledge of magic? Can you not imagine him settling for more knowledge by way of a challenge, instead of enacting revenge?

(Hey look at that, Alexander’s kindness did turn out to be relevant!)

There’s also something about young Celia pointing out that Alexander is to him as Prospero is to Hector. I don’t know what to make of that — perhaps Alexander’s true name is just old, and would draw too much attention. When Marco summons him, he inscribes symbols in the shape of an A, though. The Night Circus feels like it takes place in a world where true names have power.

In conclusion: I think Alexander is the basis of the Merlin story, and textually there is little that denies that. I hope you’ve enjoyed this freshly ploughed ground; feel free to plant seeds in it should you wish.

Hello! First of all, I want to say I love your writing. Your blog is truly a lovely space.

Second, I was wondering if you had some advice. I love writing and I enjoy writing fan fic, but I’m always too nervous to post or I keep rewriting it over and over until I get frustrated and leave it to rot in Google Docs. I’m not sure if you’ve ever experienced something similar, but if you have any words of wisdom, I’d really appreciate them. Thank you!

Honestly my advice is that the only reason it may feel like that to you is because you’ve read it so many times it just feels too familiar to you and it may start sounding boring or just not interesting in general 😭 imo atp, if it’s finished, just post it. Most ppl who like to read fanfics aren’t going to be die hard critics who’ll flame you for every little mistake, and you are writing first and foremost for yourself anyways 🤷🏻‍♀️ so no stress, just post it.

If it’s not finished, I say taking a break from it will do you some good yk? It’ll have you looking back at it with fresh eyes and a clearer mind. I hope these help anon!! 💕
