If you, like me, need something to listen to while you write, and you don't know mynoise.net yet, you are in for a terrific treat.
The above link brings you to my currently favorite setting, but you can adjust and change it however you like. Also check out the rain sounds. It's like magic for my chaotic writing brain.

Working on art while listening to the new Andre 3000 album and overlaying some nice ambience noise over it for fun. I am using mynoise.net for my soundscapes... love them. I've been using it for YEARS. Please support them if you can they're doing the Lord's work. My favorite is ocean + rain + mermaids calling, though that may not be appropriate with Mr. 3000's flutes tonight!

Listening is not usually how I get myself to sleep, as sound mostly keeps me awake. My bedtime routine involves reading written text. That is, unless there is outside noise I have to block or my tinnitus is really acting up.
When I do need soothing noise, I listen to one of many ambient sounds via the myNoise.net website, the iOS app for which is excellent. (Alas, the Android app is rather buggy. [2025 edit:] The Android app has improved, though I haven't used it enough to re-evaluate much.)
Every sound generator on myNoise has 10 slider bars to customize what you're listening to, often sorted by pitch so you can easily adjust to cover outside sound.
There's also options to play more than one generator simultaneously. And there are SO MANY GENERATORS!
I highly recommend paying the fee to download unlimited generators from the app, as they are individually $0.99 each, and there are far, FAR more than 10 to be had. It's an incredible deal. Similarly, tossing $5 to the website directly to unlock the extra features is beyond worth it.

Worked on an exam for an hour, then the boredom settled in. Went for a walk. Had some chocolate. Not feeling much better. It's Medieval Library background noise time, I think.

You want some ambient noise that makes you feel like you're riding a dragon or griffin?
The link should load the proper preset, but if it doesn't, it's the "Flapping Wings" one. Love this website. I was writing while listening to a preset of "Examination Time" the other day, and it was working for me (I have to turn off any human noise like coughing, though).

This once again seems like a good time for me to be a shill for the myNoise app and myNoise website, the most amazing ambient sound app/website ever
It has
- like 5 different kinds of noise
- like 15 different kinds of rain sounds
- all the ocean noises
- all the nature noises (there are wolves!)
- ambient music. You want drums? You want electric piano soundscapes? It has these things. I like the polyrhythm generator a lot.
- incomprehensible chatter noises. suburb noises. person telling a bedtime story noises. radio chatter noises. Drown out the sound of surrounding conversations with real or fake speech
- scary noises
- background ambience for your dnd campaign
- factory noises. Other mechanical noises.
- even more noises there are hundreds of noises
And you can further customize the noises. Is that parrot in the jungle soundscape you’re listening to annoying? Mute it. You can do that. Are the high pitches in the white noise a little irritating? Quiet those and raise the low pitches.
MyNoise is so good I need people to understand I need people to use it AND it can play in the background while you watch videos and stuff (at least on iPhone, idk about Android devices)
Anyway sorry for hijacking your post I see anyone mention white noise or rain noise or whatever and I tunnel vision becoming the ultimate MyNoise spokesperson.
using spotify to listen to ten hours of rain sounds every night has thrown off my discover algorithm a little
