Princess Cecily of Mynathe is the granddaughter of a miller.  King John’s marriage to a commoner was disapproved of by many in the kingdom.  The royal couple had struggled for years to have an heir, only to have their only child born a girl, born early, and frail, and with eyes that would never work quite as they should.  Many people whispered that her gender and ill health were a clear sign that the king’s marriage was ill-favored.
Still, Cecily was adored by her parents, and raised as the beloved heiress to the crown.  When she was thirteen, she was betrothed to a younger prince of the neighboring kingdom, but he was cruel and mistreated her, and so the engagement was broken.  To help her heal from the trauma, she was sent to spend a while with her maternal grandfather, a hardworking and kindly man who still ran a mill despite being father-in-law to the king.  During this time, she met her grandfather’s apprentice, Gwilym Argenveil, and developed a close bond with him.  The two fell in love and wished to marry, but Cecily’s father, King John, knew that people would disapprove of two successive monarchs marrying commoners.  So he tasked Gwilym with a quest:  To win Cecily’s hand, he would have to slay a dragon, and once he had done that, he would be elevated to the nobility and thus worthy of marrying a princess.
Gwilym left on his quest when he and Cecily were both sixteen, and they had a brief physical affair before he left, considering themselves betrothed.  Cecily became pregnant, and she was once again sent to live with her grandfather to keep her out of the public eye.  Towards the end of her pregnancy, she received word that Gwilym had been killed, and so she named their son Trystram, meaning sorrowful.  In her grief, she took her child and began to wander, hoping to find some sort of meaning in a world without her love.  As she traveled, she found herself living in a cottage surrounded by pear trees.  Shortly after she and Trystram moved in, she found an injured swan outside their cottage.  Cecily nursed it back to health, and the swan informed her that he was her beloved Gwilym.  He had not, in fact, been killed, but had instead been placed under a curse that transformed him into a swan.  He told her that the only way to break the curse was for Cecily to make him a shirt out of nettles.
For a few years, the strange little family lived in the cottage by the pear trees, all the while, Cecily crushed and spun nettles into fibers she could weave into a shirt.  When the nettle shirt was almost finished, their little home was discovered by Prince Ilyas, the cruel prince Cecily had once been betrothed to.  Recognizing Cecily, he attempted to abduct her despite her protests.  Gwilym attacked Prince Ilyas in her defense, pecked the wicked man’s eyes out, and tore his throat with his beak  As Ilyas laid dying, Cecily calmly sewed the last seam of the precious nettle shirt and gently placed it on Gwilym’s back.
With Gwilym’s curse now broken, the trio returned to Mynathe, explaining to Cecily’s parents and the rest of the kingdom the curse and how it had been broken.  Trystram, now four, told the assembled crowds, that his father had slain a dragon to defend his mother.  And so Gwilym was knighted and given the title Sir Gwilym Dragonsbane.  He and Cecily were married, and they all lived happily ever after.

SHE IS MYNATHE’S DAUGHTER, just as much as she is her mother’s daughter.  She, from the moment of her birth, has belonged to the queendom and to the people.  Her duty in life is to serve them, and care for them, as a daughter or sister or mother would.  However they choose to see her.  The citizens of Mynathe are just as much her family as her blood sisters.  She is bound, by tradition and blood-right, to do all she can to help those who live in her country.  Still, the appearance of a stranger, a foreigner, is enough to prompt an intense curiosity in the sheltered princess.

Princess Cecily of Mynathe was born months too early. By the skill of the royal doctors and sheer luck, the fragile, weak baby lived, though her eyes were damaged by her premature birth. As heir to the throne, because she was her parents’ only child, Cecily was taught all that she would need to know to rule a country when the time came. However, because of her generally-fragile health and the impairment to her vision, she was mostly confined to the royal palace, under the watchful gaze of her parents and various servants.

Cecily’s first child was born two years after her marriage to Prince Ilyas.  Because of her terrible circumstances, she gave him the name Trystram, meaning sorrow.  When Ilyas demanded that they both be killed, she escaped with him into the forest.  They lived in a cottage, in hiding, until being discovered when Trystram was two.  Upon their return to Mynathe, Trystram was publicly declared as a prince of Mynthae, and also of Sartou, by courtesy.  He was the living embodiment of both the alliance between the countries and the tragedies that brought it and his life about.  Cecily loves her son dearly, but there is a small, traumatized part of her that fears he may one day inherit the cruelty of his father, and she strives to raise him with such love and joy that no unpleasantness can grow in him.

During Cecily’s forced marriage to Prince Ilyas of Sartou, Cecily lived in Ilyas’s private residence, and no one other than Ilyas, his mother, and the servants knew she was there.  The marriage was not publicly announced, Ilyas being aware that he had technically kidnapped the heiress to another kingdom.  All the rest of the world believed that Cecily had suddenly and mysteriously died while staying with her grandfather, and Ilyas threatened his mother and servants to keep them quiet about the truth.  When Cecily escaped and was brought home to Mynathe, the king of Sartou was horrified by Ilyas’s behavior, disowning and imprisoning his youngest son and promising to always be an ally to Mynathe and to look out for his young grandson to make up for what happened.

Thinking that only an apple tree was behind his house, the miller agreed.  So the prince took Cecily, spiriting her away to his own lands and forcing her to marry him.  In his sadism, he forced her to do numerous cruel and demeaning tasks, like picking lentils out of a fireplace and crushing nettles to make fiber to weave with out of them. Two years after the marriage, she gave birth to a son.
Her husband was away at the time of the birth, and when he was told that Cecily had given birth, he declared that he’d decided the child could not be his, that he believed his wife to have been unfaithful.  And he demanded that they both be killed, with Cecily’s heart sent to him as proof that the deed was done.
The prince’s mother, who was good and kind and nothing like her son, arranged for Cecily and her baby son to flee, having a huntsman kill a deer and send its heart to the prince as a trick.  Cecily hid in a cottage, while she attempted to contact her parents.  She was eventually discovered, not by the prince, but by the former stableboy turned knight who loved her, who took her home to her family, along with her child. Her parents had believed her dead after her disappearance, and they were of course outraged at the abuse she went through.
They publicly had the prince shamed, charged, and imprisoned. Their marriage was broken, and Cecily raised her son, eventually married her gallant knight, and lived in light and love.
