Name of the Day: Estevanico
From What Does My Brilliant Name Mean?, my 550-page name-dictionary ($5.99). https://ko-fi.com/namedictionarypublishers
Name: Estevanico
Pronunciation: ehss-stehv-VAHN-nihk-koh
Languages: Greek, to Spanish
Meaning: He Is Our Bright Garland, Our Bright Crown
The black African explorer Mustafa "Estevanico" Azemmouri (c. 1500-1539), a Moroccan Muslim, rose from slavery to become the first non-Native re-discoverer of huge areas of North America. After Mustafa's home city of Azemmour, Morocco, was seized by Portugal, Mustafa was enslaved in 1522, taken to Spain, and renamed Estevanico, perhaps by his "owner," Andrés Dorantes de Carranza. Andrés was later persuaded in 1527 by a friend, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, to grab Estevanico and join Cuba's Governor Pánfilo de Narváez, along with some 600 cutthroats, to invade Florida. Álvar's diary, published as La Relación y Comentarios in 1542, told of Governor Narváez's delusion of finding the Seven Cities of Cibola, or Seven Cities of Gold, reputedly built by Spanish clerics fleeing Morocco's 8th-Century conquest of Spain--an absurd diaspora myth. When Narváez's five ships reached the Caribbean isle of Hispaniola, many of his brigands deserted; and as the ships limped to Cuba, storms smashed two of them. Once in Florida, starvation, illness, and Native defenders cut the Spaniards' ranks to about 200. Survivors cobbled-together rafts and sailed south, but two of the craft sank, drowning many, including Governor Narváez himself. Estevanico, Álvar, Andrés, and other naked castaways finally beached on today's Galveston Island, in Texas. The isle's Native Karankawa, watching the starvelings pray over the dying, offered food in exchange for prayers. The invaders agreed to pray--yet continued to perish until only Estevanico, Andrés, Álvar, and a few others remained. After the Karankawa sold the Spaniards as slaves to other Natives, Estevanico became a natural leader. Álvar wrote, "It was the negro who talked to [the Natives] all the time. He inquired about the road we should follow, the villages--in short, about everything…." Eight years of international travel finally brought Estevanico and his band to Spain's newly-created Mexico City in 1536, where they charmed officials with fairy-tales about the Seven Cities. In 1539, Estevanico was ordered to guide a new expedition north. In the trek, he was told to scout ahead--and he urged his horse to dash for freedom. He later became the first non-Native re-discoverer of what is now Arizona and New Mexico.
Public Domain Image: Turkish Water Seller (1874) by Francis Millet (1848-1912), from Port Reading's Art Renewal Center, brings to mind Africa's Estevanico, the first non-Native rediscoverer of today's Arizona and New Mexico.

Name of the Day: Macarius
From What Does My Brilliant Name Mean?, my 550-page name-dictionary ($5.99). https://ko-fi.com/namedictionarypublishers
Name: Macarius
Pronunciation: muhk-KAHR-reeh-yuhss
Languages: Greek, to Latin, to Old English
Meaning: He Honors Peace, Joy, and Blessed Release
Notable Use of this Name: Saint Macarius (c. AD 300-AD 391), born in the African civilization of Egypt, and venerated by the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, began life as a smuggler. Using camels, he crossed Egypt's Nitrian Desert to transport stolen potassium nitrate, used as soap in ancient times. After being forced by his parents to settle down and marry, in his hometown of Shabsheer, Macarius used his notorious cleverness to fake an illness, abandon his wife, and flee to Egypt's deserts. There, he had a vision of an angel proclaiming that the desert would one day belong to him. Chastened, Macarius returned home to find that his new wife had passed away. After his parents also passed, a newly-pious Macarius gave his possessions to the poor and consecrated his life to God, as a priest. His subsequent years of good works were interrupted by a woman in Shabsheer who accused him of fathering her unborn child. Macarius accepted responsibility, and was condemned by the shocked townspeople, until the woman later confessed that another man was the father. Everyone tried to apologize, but Macarius retreated to the desert, where he lived as a hermit for decades, ministering to thousands of pilgrims, who called him the Lamp of the Desert.

Name of the Day: Maurice
From What Does My Brilliant Name Mean?, my 550-page name-dictionary ($5.99). https://ko-fi.com/namedictionarypublishers
Name: Maurice
Pronunciation: mohr-REEHSS
Languages: Latin, to French, to Old English
Meaning: He Honors Moors with Dark Complexions
Notable Use of this Name: The black Christian warrior Maurice (?-AD 287)--or Mauritius, or Moritz, or Morris--was the first Primicerius or commander of Rome's Prima Maximiana Thebeorum, the First Theban Legion of Maximian. The Legion comprised some 6,600 Christian warriors from Thebes, a city in the African land of Egypt, a realm of "zealous Christians" at that time, according to Alban Butler (1710-1773) in The Lives of the Primitive Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints (1799, posthumous). Maurice and his Legion proudly fought for Emperor Maximian (c. AD 250-c. AD 310)--until the Emperor ordered them to worship pagan gods. Maurice and his men refused, preferring martyrdom, a sacrifice which eventually elevated Maurice to sainthood. The earliest depiction of Saint Maurice is a painted statue, c. AD 1250, in the Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice, in Magdeburg, Germany, portraying the armored Maurice, with his broad nose, full lips, and black skin. Also, in the Public Domain Image partly seen here, Saint Erasmus and Saint Maurice (c. 1517), by Germany's Matthias Grünewald (c. 1470-1528), a black Saint Maurice confers with Italy's Erasmus of Formia (?-AD 303). Also, locales such as the city of St. Moritz, in Switzerland, honor this beloved African martyr.

Notable Use of this Name: The brilliant Italian-Jewish-American author Catherine Anna Manfredi, known popularly as Cat Yronwode, has worked variously as an astrologer, comic-book-writer, graphic designer, publisher, and editor. Cat--the daughter of Joseph Manfredi, an Italian-American painter; and Liselotte Erlanger, a German-Jewish-American author, who escaped from Nazi Germany--went to Shimer College in Mount Carroll, Illinois, but left to reside at the Tolstoy Peace Commune, in the state of Washington. Cat’s love of comic books motivated her to write the Lesser Book of the Vishanti (1977), an homage to Marvel Comics’ Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts. Cat has served as an Editor-in-Chief for Eclipse Comics during the 1980s, and she cocreated the widely-respected book Women and the Comics (1985). Cat also cocreated trailblazing political trading-cards for Eclipse, exploring topics such as the AIDS epidemic, and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. But perhaps one of Cat’s greatest achievements was testifying in the case of Illinois v. Correa, an experience which led to the creation of the now-widely-respected Comic Book Legal Defense Fund in 1986.
